"His stories were good because he imagined them intensely, so intensely that he came to believe them." So wrote Patricia Highsmith in her seminal literary thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley in 1955. You might also characterise the work of our guest today, the talented Mr. Steven Zaillian, this way. The worlds and characters of his films and TV shows are imagined in such rich detail and complexity that you can absolutely imagine him believing them to be real as he crafts them on the page. In fact, that level of detail and depth has been his calling card for over thirty decades in Hollywood now. From 1990's Awakenings and 1993's Schindler's List, which won Steven an Oscar, all the way to films like Gangs of New York, American Gangster, Moneyball, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Irishman, there's a thrillingly convincing quality about whatever story he's telling – oftentimes, his characters are people you can imagine pulling up a barstool next to you and telling you a tale you'll never forget. This month, he's up for an Emmy for his work with Ripley – a Netflix adaptation of Highsmith's novel, that Steven acted as showrunner for, writing and directing every episode. The series is a hypnotising ten hours in the company of a conman, Tom Ripley, who's hired by a wealthy businessman to convince his son to return home from a life of leisure abroad on the Italian coast. But the more Tom – played here by Andrew Scott – ensconces himself in the lives of Dickie Greenleaf, played by Johnny Flynn, and Dakota Fanning as his partner, Marge Sherwood, the more his lies and his lust for what Dickie has mutates into something murderous. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Steven tells us about the relevance of fraudster stories in a time of Trump and other public deceivers. We get into the writing tricks and tips that make you root for the morally thorny characters he often writes. And the rationale behind every change from both the novel and the Matt Damon-starring 1999 adaptation of Ripley is uncovered too, as we delve into the slightly different ending to this version of the tale and the meaning of Italian artist Caravaggio's presence throughout this story.  Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Summary: Get those reading glasses on and join us for some extra nerdy energy this week, friends! Holly and Devin discuss Modern Classics today - those works post World War II that created pivot points in the cannon for the Thriller and Romance genres. In this era, ideas about race, gender and class are shifting as readers broadened their understanding of an interconnected world. Sexual liberation and violent horrors that had previously been viewed as outrageous become commonplace, so of course both our hosts have a blast this episode!  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:02): Holly discussed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson, a Nordic crime fiction novel following Mikael Blomkvist (journalist and publisher) and Lisbeth Salander (a computer hacker) as they investigate the disappearance of a woman 40 years ago. Together, Blomkvist and Salander uncover the secrets of the woman's family through the darkest corners of Swedish society. Holly's key takeaways were: The novel delves into themes of violence, sexual abuse, and family secrets. It explores how individuals and families can hide dark and painful truths, often at great cost including corruption and financial malfeasance.  Lisbeth is a central character who represents female empowerment; her intelligence, resilience and capacity for self-defense are key elements in the story. Larsson explores issues of gender and the societal treatment of women.  This novel had a significant cultural impact and made important contributions to the mystery and thriller genres. Specifically, the complex female protagonist, darker themes, moral ambiguity and critique of society are now common in the genre, begun by Larsson in 2005.  The Heart (20:31): Devin discussed The Lion's Daughter by Loretta Chase, a bodice-ripper romance from 1992 following the fiery-haired and -tempered Esme Brentmore as she works to avenge her father's (supposed) murder, entangled all the way with the scoundrel and handsome rake, Varian St. George. They roam the country of Albania as fiendish plots and unspoken feelings bring them together and threaten to tear them apart. Devin's key takeaways were: This novel and others by Chase are part of the bodice-ripper romance era (think: woman in silk dress laid sensually in a field with her blouse exposing ample cleavage). Bodice Rippers are known for “exotic” locations, sexually explicit material, heroines with careers outside of housewife/mother who are also virginal yet fierce and handsome alpha males bent on seducing and dominating that woman.  Chase brings all the above tropes to the table with the country of Albania as the background. Albanian herself, Chase adds a real air of authenticity to Esme, who was born and raised in Albania by her English father, Jason, and to many of the colorful side characters.  The romance in this novel is filled with delightful tension (once you become aware that Esme is over 18 and there is therefore no statutory rape going on - yikes) and a lot of “I must have you” energy. Esme is witty, combative, and quick to anger. Varian is immature, selfish, and devastatingly charming (also known as a fuckboi). Hot On the Shelf (48:50): Holly: Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton Devin: Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros What's Making Our Hearts Race (53:09): Holly: Stray, the video game  Devin: Our Flag Means Death on HBO Max   Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Taste Is Simply Just Knowing How Something Makes You Feel. My Policeman is a new movie based on the book by Bethan Roberts, which is also based on the life of writer E.M. Forster. The crew talks about a new audiobook to check out from Jannette McCurdy and breakdown some questionable scenes from David Fincher's adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, pretty uneasy stuff to sit through as they revisit the cult classic film. Shannon brings up some sad news about the late Aaron Carter which makes the crew take a dive into a nostalgic trip from childhood bringing up walkman CD players, HitClips, and easier times. IMDB shares with us what the film is about: “The arrival of Patrick into Marion and Tom's home triggers the exploration of seismic events from 40 years previously.” While the film didn't strike everyone as the next amazing film, the crew divulges in the 1950s era Sussex society when it was extremely illegal to be homosexual with life sentencing consequences, and really love how these themes played out. This story of a love triangle serves a notebook-style story spending time in the 90s and the 50s. Apparently, to prepare for his role, Harry Styles memorized the entire script. According to the director, Styles could recite every character's lines in a given scene. Check it out to see what the crew thought about this novel adaptation which you can stream now, only on Amazon Prime. - MY POLICEMAN - DIRECTED BY Michael Grandage WRITTEN BYRon Nyswaner (Screenplay)Bethan Roberts (Based upon the book by) STARRING Gina McKeeLinus RoacheRupert EverettHarry StylesEmma CorrinDavid DawsonKadiff KirwanEmily JohnDora DavisJoseph Potter

How much time or importance should we invest in planning/learning/theory, and how much time should we invest in hands-on execution? Planning can be an endless endeavor which leads to never finishing anything; but then again, you can dive into creating something without enough preparation and burn out. So . . . BOTH would seem to be absolutely necessary. So, where does the rubber meet the road? What is the proper intersection of planning and execution? We discuss! Also, Josh recommends Scorsese's The Irishman, which is on Netflix, and Ira recommends the Swedish/Noomi Rapace original version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which is on Amazon Prime.

William Hoy ACE, Tyler Nelson, Will Files, Douglas Murray THE BATMAN post production team of editors Bill Hoy and Tyler Nelson, along with supervising sound editors Will Files and Doug Murray, are justifiably proud of the film they've made.  In breaking the mold of the superhero archetype, they achieved director Matt Reeves' vision of a noir murder mystery that's more in the vein of classis 70's cinema than the glossy blockbusters of the 21st century.  Adding to this feat is the fact that they were forced to shut down one month into production only to return to action in a much more restrictive model of collaboration than they were used to.  In spite of those challenges, audiences and critics alike have responded in a big way to the remarkably fresh take on DC Films' dark knight. The story of THE BATMAN begins two years into his crimefighting legacy, forgoing the usual origin story elements often found in super hero tales, and follows Batman / Bruce Wayne as he ventures into Gotham City's underworld where he must track a sadistic killer prone to leaving behind a trail of cryptic clues. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator's plans becomes clearer, he must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued the city. WILLIAM HOY ACE William Hoy is known for his work on NO WAY OUT (1987), DANCES WITH WOLVES (1990), THE BONE COLLECTOR (1999), DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2014) and WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017).
