Sorry about the relevancy of this week's episode... This week, the boys talk about the mockumentary-style film C.S.A: Confederate States of America, a film that presents a kind-of Ken Burns-esque program in a world where the south had indeed won the Civil War. Why are the seemingly racist fake ads a lot more believable now? What was Canada's role in this altered American Civil War? Do the film clips remind your hosts of real films they've already covered on the show? All this and more! Next week: IS THIS MOVIE A WAR MOVIE OR IS THIS MOVIE NOT A WAR MOVIE? Space Edition. Questions? Comments? Suggestions? 11.13.2023 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: SCOTUS Code of Ethics, 100 Black Texas Soldiers Exonerated, Louisiana Congressional Map Deadline The Supreme Court is adopting its first code of ethics after the controversy over Clarence Thomas' undisclosed trips and gifts from wealthy benefactors. Justice Correspondent Elie Mystal will be here to break it all down. A century after more than 100 Black soldiers were court-martialed following a racially motivated riot in Houston amid World War I, the Army acknowledges that the troops were the victims of a legal system that was stacked against them. Nineteen of them were executed. We'll show you what happened at today's ceremony and talk to"The 24th" director Kevin Willmott, who brought the story to the big screen. I'll share my thoughts on Texas A&M firing head football coach Jimbo Fisher. Louisiana must redraw its congressional maps by January. Republican Senator Tim Scott drops out of the presidential race. And it's Diabetes Awareness Month. In our Fit, Live, Win segment, I'll talk to a young woman who "beat" diabetes and a doctor who says the black community needs to take the disease more seriously. We've jumped ahead to Spike's new era of films for a movie we absolutely should have seen so much earlier. Why? Because it's a Spike Lee Joint adapted from one of the most important Greek comedies ever written, and it happens to be pretty hilarious at how good a job it does. The problem is when Spike and new collaborator Kevin Willmott stray from the source and take themselves a little too seriously with an incredibly silly premise. Especially for Greek drama and comedy, allowing the structure to play out without interruption is the only way to go. We discuss 2015's Chi-Raq this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! I SEE U's premiere episode welcomes Oscar-winning filmmaker, Kevin Willmott, Duke University researcher, Dr. Adriene Lentz Smith and film producer, Brandy Byers. We'll reveal unexplored takeaways from a film Willmott directed and released in 2020 called, "THE 24th." The movie takes place in 1917, where soldiers from the Army's all-Black 24th Infantry Regiment become involved in a deadly riot in Houston. Throughout the course of the film, soldiers kept putting each other down and calling each other names. Guests talk candidly about the notion of colorism within the Black community and why so many African-Americans tend to discriminate and criticize each other. The episode will also grapple with why some White Americans tend to avoid discussions dealing with racism and prefer to look ahead and not dwell into the past.

The backlash was swift. #OscarsSoWhite drew attention to the lack of diversity in the movie industry. This week, we're asking what, if anything, has changed since 2015. Willmott talks about the 2021 Oscars, and his upcoming film.

It stars Delroy Lindo, Jonathan Majors, Clarke Peters, Johnny Trí Nguyễn, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Mélanie Thierry, Paul Walter Hauser, Jasper Pääkkönen, Jean Reno, Veronica Ngo, and Chadwick Boseman. The film's plot follows a group of aging Vietnam War veterans who return to the country in search of the remains of their fallen squad leader, as well as the treasure they buried while serving there. Originally written by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo in 2013, the script was re-worked by Lee and Kevin Willmott following the pair's BlacKkKlansman (2018). The cast joined in February 2019 and filming began a month later, lasting through June and taking place in Southeast Asia. With a production budget of $35–45 million, it is among Lee's most expensive films. Netflix digitally released Da 5 Bloods worldwide on June 12, 2020.[2] It received positive reviews, with critics praising its direction, story, themes, cinematography and particularly Lindo's performance.

There are two guests on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. Vegas Tenold is the author of the new book Everything You Love Will Burn: Inside the Rebirth of White Nationalism in America. He is an award-winning journalist who has covered the far right in America for years, as well as human rights in Russia, conflict in central Africa and the Middle East, and national security. A graduate of Columbia University's School of Journalism, his work has appeared in publications including the New York Times, Rolling Stone, New Republic, and Al Jazeera America. Vegas spent 6 years embedded inside white supremacist and other white terrorist hate organizations. He shares his on the ground perspective and experience in Charlottesville during the white supremacist riot which killed Heather Heyer, what white supremacists actually envision for their ideal white "ethnostate", their delusions about "white identity" and "white European unity", as well as the ways that racism, whiteness, and toxic violent masculinity intersect. Vegas also offers some stories about how young white men (and women) are radicalized into joining white racist terrorist organizations. Last Sunday, Kevin Willmott won an Oscar for his work writing Spike Lee's film BlacKkKlansman. Kevin is also a friend of The Chauncey DeVega Show. This is our victory lap. From the archives several months ago. Kevin Willmott is a professor of film at The University of Kansas. He is also one of the writers on Spike Lee's great new film BlacKkKlansman. Kevin and Chauncey discuss the surreal truth of how Ron Stallworth, a black man, teamed up with a fellow police officer, who is Jewish, to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan. Kevin also reflects on how BlacKkKlansman is a direct counter to the racism and bigotry of Trump's America, W.E.B. Du Bois' concept of "double consciousness", blaxploitation films and the desperation of hate mongers. Chauncey and Kevin also share what happened when they watched BlacKkKlansman in a theater with white Donald Trump supporters. On this week's show, Chauncey DeVega reflects on how politics and popular culture overlap in the form of the white savior film--and Oscar winner for best picture--Green Book and the multigenre spectacle that was Trump's personal fixer Michael Cohen's testimony before the House. Chauncey also explains the role played by paid for black conservative human prop Lynne Patton in the role of "best black friend" in a Trump racism romantic comedy. The film stars John David Washington as Stallworth, along with Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, and Topher Grace. Set in 1970s Colorado Springs, the plot follows the first African-American detective in the city's police department as he sets out to infiltrate and expose the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. BlacKkKlansman premiered on May 14, 2018, at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix. It was theatrically released in the United States on August 10, 2018, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the white supremacist Unite the Right rally. The film received acclaim from critics, with critics praising the performances (particularly of Washington and Driver) and timely themes, as well as noting it as a return to form for Lee. The American Film Institute selected it as one of the top 10 films of the 2018 and at the 76th Golden Globe Awards, it earned four nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Drama.

The Fiasco Brothers discuss Kevin Willmott’s 2004 alternate-history documentary C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America. It’s an examination of American popular culture through a lens that’s horrifyingly familiar. Heavy content warnings on this one! It deals with cultural racism in a blunt manner.

There are two guests on part one of this very special two-part 200th episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. Joe Feagin is the second guest on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. He is a distinguished professor of sociology at Texas A&M University and one of the leading scholars of race and social inequality in the world. Professor Feagin has written dozens of books including The White Racial Frame:Centuries of Racial Framing and Counter-Framing, Racist America, and How Blacks Built America. During this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Professor Feagin and Chauncey discuss the myth of white "working class anxiety" and Trump's election, liberal racism, and all of the myths and half-truths being circulated about race and class in the parts of the country which voted for Donald Trump. Professor Feagin also offers some warnings about the hope that "millennials" and other young white people will be and are less racist and bigoted than their parents and grandparents. In this week's very special 200th episode, Chauncey DeVega ponders if a black man named Daryl Davis who befriends white supremacists and brings them to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. is a hero or perhaps just a well-intentioned but gullible man. And at the end of this week's show, Chauncey gives some advice to a black woman who is dating a white man who refuses to acknowledge her anxieties and fears about racism and violence in Trump's America.

This week's episode special 100th episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show features film scholar, actor, writer, and professor Kevin Willmott. Professor Willmott is a co-writer and producer of Spike Lee's film Chi-Raq as well as the recent film Destination Planet Negro. In addition to many other projects, Kevin also wrote and directed the amazing "documentary"/counterfactual film C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America. In this week's installment of the podcast, Professor Willmott and Chauncey talk about how Donald Trump is a character in a satirical film, Hollywood's recent "obsession" with movies about slavery and the "black experience," the reception of the movie Chi-Raq, and the importance of talking honestly and critically about the color line and black history in America. Kevin and Chauncey also have a moment of shared life experience as they reflect on what it was like to grow up with an older father and what having learned elders taught them about appreciating life and history. During this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Chauncey talks about Donald Trump's genius speech at the RNC convention, what it has in common with Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars, and offers his thanks to the listeners to the podcast for helping it get to the 100th show. Chauncey also offers up some thoughts on the four new movies that he saw while trying to escape Chicago's heat wave, talks about the horrible new Ghostbusters movie, and calls out the Republican sex freak hypocrites in Cleveland who hate on gay people and Muslims but apparently are watching all sorts of porn which features them.

Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of seriously confused white people who may – or may not – be 1/32nd Sioux… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! The movie is called Destination: Planet Negro and it is as twisted, smart and funny as the title implies. KEVIN WILLMOTT podcast excerpt: "I know 'Destination: Planet Negro' was so crazy that I wasn't even going to talk to people about funding it. I'm a professor at the University of Kansas; this is my seventh feature film. I used the equipment at KU, then I pulled in favors from all my buddies that were in my other movies. The budget for 'Planet Negro' was $5,000. Five-thousand dollars! Everybody worked for free. What I spent the $5,000 on was meals. The cinematographer is a professor I work with; he built the spaceship. The robot was built by another buddy. He built it from stuff he had lying around. It took two years to make the movie. And I play one of the leads because I knew I would always show up!" Take a little Spike Lee, circa She’s Gotta Have It, stir in a pinch of the TV series “In Living Colour,” some Flash Gordon and Lone Ranger, an episode of “The Time Tunnel,” a few moments of inspiration from Bender on the animated “Futurama,” and yes, even a colorful chunk of The Wizard of Oz and you’ll find yourself on Planet Negro. Kevin Willmott is the writer, director and star of Destination: Planet Negro. He also was co-writer on the Spike Lee joint Chi-Raq. KEVIN WILLMOTT podcast excerpt: "I have a film called 'CSA: Confederate States of America.' It imagines what happens if the South won the Civil War. That's how I met Spike Lee. He read a script called 'Gotta Give It Up.' That was 15 years ago. We tried to get is made a long time ago. He called me back" In his new film, he combines moments of great social satire – hello, Strom Thurmond! – with serious political points about race and sexuality. And it’s really, weirdly, funny, too. Key interview moments: • 6:10 Destination Planet Negro writer/director/star Kevin Willmott explains how he made his movie for just $5,000; • 19:00 A lifelong fan of 1950s sci-fi films, Willmott always loved seeing astronauts in leather jackets; • 27:00 Willmott talks about crossing paths with Spike Lee and how they came to co-write Chi-Raq. The film is presented as a British documentary played on the Confederate network television complete with commercials from the alternate history. It's an at times humorous, at times upsetting look at American history and what could have been. They also speak with director Kevin Willmott about the film, how the idea came into being, and how the film is still relevant today. As always, you can follow Chris Stachiw on Twitter at @KultureStach, Sean Liang at @Seannifer and Kulture Shocked at @KultureShocked. From the outrageous minds of Spike Lee and his co-writer Kevin Willmott, comes this retelling of Aristophanes' 'Lysistrata' set in contemporary Chicago. Shooting deaths in the South Side outnumber those in both Afghanistan and Iraq Wars combined. One woman is fed up with these depressing statistics, so she enlists the female community to deny their men sex until the fighting stops. On this broad canvas, Lee lets his imagination go wild, creating a self-indulgent film that suffers not from ambition but uneven pacing and a problematic depiction of the female characters as sex objects, not activists. Andrew and Phil have a lot to say about this film.
