In Part 7 of this 8-part series on "Overcoming," Life, Lemons & LemonDrops hosts, Greer and Whitnie, welcome guest Jan Edwards who shares her story of a plan ride that changed it all. About Jan Edwards As a young girl and throughout most of her adult life Jan “played small” (using today’s vernacular). She always started from a place of “no.” Growing up, whether family and friends realized they were doing it or not, and through two failed marriages, she heard messages that she wasn’t smart, she wasn’t flexible, she was too neat and pressed, she was unapproachable, etc., and she took those messages and many more in and owned them as her truth. Looking back, she probably was unapproachable but it was a defense mechanism. If she stayed back and stayed quiet no one would notice her real insecurities and flaws and couldn’t further pile on her. Despite how she felt about herself, Jan managed a long and successful career. At least to the outsider and until burnout appeared about 25 year into her career. She was exhausted with her schedule and the endless demands of her job. She was unhappy and unmotivated to take one more step. On a plane ride home one week Jan was at the lowest she had felt and in seat 5c, looking out the window with tears rolling down her face, she prayed, “Lord, what do I do?” By the time her plane reached its destination, Jan knew she needed to make a change and change she did. After numerous conversations with God, time and a new lease on life, Jan began coaching and guiding women to shake off the limitations the world has imposed on them. She helps women tear down the false narratives and beliefs they have of themselves. She knows she was born to help women discover their purpose, their calling, and living in the abundance God is providing. Four takeaways from this episode: Know what you want – dream your dream, craft your vision, establish goals, and then go after them. Ask for advice if you need it, but don’t let anyone talk you out of your dream. Believe in yourself and your dream, even if no one else does. Avoid comparisons – focus on what you want to do, be, and have. Your dreams and desires are yours – not your friends, your parents, what we see on social media, etc. Speak kindly to yourself – negative brain chatter slows down your progress. Even when something doesn’t work out like you thought it would, love and praise yourself for what did go right and work on the areas that didn’t go as planned God provides - God will provide everything you need to do what He calls you to do. There is so much content out there about being yourself and being authentic, but when does being yourself become arrogance or complacency? I have come up with 5 laws that I believe we need to follow to make sure that we are Doing You in the right way. I want you to be true to yourself AND feel good about your actions.
“If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound” When you fail and you are by yourself, then your failure is really insignificant. No one was there to witness it so you can say it never happened. But when we fail in front of others, it is larger than life, it’s documented and recorded in history for everyone to revisit. If you can laugh at yourself when you are by yourself then why can’t you laugh at yourself when others are laughing at you. Ya could. Remember my friends, it’s YOUR journey; no one else’s. Just keep Doing You and BE THE TREE.
Do You, Do it for You, and Do it every day. Doing You is simply a matter of self-awareness. Figure out who you are, what are you good at, what is your DNA and what is your purpose in life. Stop lying to yourself and everyone around you and just be You. Do it for you. If you don’t live your life for You, you will wake up one day hating your life and who you have let yourself become. Even worse, you will start blaming and resenting those around you for what is really your fault. Do it every day. Once you figure out who you are and have decided to live your life for you, keep doing what makes you happy. Don’t stop. My friends, life is a balance but you owe it to yourself to tip the scales in your favor. It’s never too late to Do You, Do it for You and Do it every day.
This is the first episode in our #UNCUT with Kim and Katie B mini-series. I loved getting to have real-talk with my co-host Katie B from the Real Rebel Podcast; I'm secretly praying we will extend this 4-part series indefinitely. Katie is a dear friend I met on a recent trip to Bali and given that we're both about living that unconventional life, and DOING YOU, we thought wanted to get a bit more candid in front of the camera (and behind the podcast mic) for the benefit of YOU, the listener. IN THIS WEEK'S EPISODE WE CHAT ABOUT: What happens when we visit a fortune-telling High Priestess The story of Luna Tips for first-time travelers to Bali How Ubud differs from the beach towns Some of the perils and perks of living in South East Asia What led both of us to fly halfway around the world How to tell if you've been in Bali too long What is the 'feather collective'? And much more...
