Planning on taking a cruise to/around Italy? Not sure what that entails? Struggling to see how it's possible given the fact many of the towns are land-locked? After Darcy talked to her mom about an upcoming trip to Italy, we were inspired to do a little digging into cruises to, from, and around Italy. Some are massive cruise ships with multi-port journeys, water slides, and endless buffets others are, in fact, ferries with an unassuming bar and restaurant that get you from point A to B. In this episode we get into the pros and cons of it all plus touch on what the environmental impacts of various transportation might be. If you're planning on going to Rome in 2025, we highly recommend booking your hotels (and potentially even your flights) as soon as possible. If you'd like to help out Only A Bag, you can use our affiliate links marked with an asterisk.  For hotels, we tend to use Booking* since we're already a part of their member program, but Expedia* also has a robust member program with similar prices on hotel rooms. For an aggregate that seems to offer slightly better deals across the board, we recommend checking out Agoda*.  And if you've always loved the idea of staying in Italy for an extended period and becoming part of the culture, we can't recommend housesitting enough. While it does often entail taking care of someone's pet, it can also be a gateway to seeing Italy in a totally new way. We use Trusted Housesitters* which has a fairly steep upfront cost (a few hundred dollars) but that's covered with a few nights of a house sit which should never cost you money.  Lastly, if you're already looking to book flights, we like to use the airline's website, however, some aggregates do offer better deals, so we always recommend checking Expedia* or Booking* before purchasing.  Thank you so much for listening! Brave Dynamics: Authentic Leadership Reflections
Indonesia: Apple's $1 Billion Investment in Indonesia, Traveloka and the Middle-Class Economy, Cultural Barriers and Financial Literacy in Startups - E510

Brave Dynamics: Authentic Leadership Reflections

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 16, 2024 37:18

Jeremy Au and Gita Sjahrir discussed three key themes during their conversation: 1. Apple's $1 Billion Investment in Indonesia and Local Content Policies: Indonesia's regulation requiring local components in imported products initially banned iPhone 16 sales, sparking public frustration. The government negotiated with Apple, escalating from a $10 million offer to a $1 billion investment. Gita highlighted President Prabowo Subianto's role in global diplomacy, marking a shift from Indonesia's traditionally insular policies. They also explored the broader context of deglobalization, where nations prioritize domestic production, and discussed how similar strategies could be applied in other markets like Vietnam. 2. Traveloka and the Middle-Class Economy: Traveloka, founded in 2012 by Ferry Unardi, Derianto Kusuma, and Albert Zhang, represents a scalable digital-first platform in Indonesia. Despite this potential, economic insecurity among the middle class limits its growth. Indonesia's GDP grew 5% in 2023, but discretionary spending remains low due to middle-class vulnerability. Traveloka also faces competition from Agoda, part of Booking Holdings, and new entrants from China. Jeremy and Gita stressed that stabilizing the middle class is crucial not just for Traveloka but for consumer-driven industries across the region. 3. Cultural Barriers and Financial Literacy in Startups: Gita discussed how Indonesia's “shame culture” prevents founders from addressing their weaknesses, particularly in financial literacy. She noted that one in three founders struggles with basics like distinguishing GMV, revenue, and contribution margins, which often leads to poor decision-making. Jeremy and Gita emphasized the importance of personal growth to overcome these challenges, encouraging founders to “do it scared” and take action despite fear. Jeremy and Gita also discussed the challenges of navigating the “messy middle” in startups, often spanning over a decade; lessons from the 2014–2015 tech boom, which highlighted the risks of overfunding and rapid scaling; the transition from physical to digital industries, with Indonesia's digital economy growing 16% in 2023; Prabowo Subianto's efforts to position Indonesia as a neutral geopolitical player; and how founders can reassess their long-term priorities and time investments in startups. === Watch, listen or read the full insight at www.bravesea.com/blog/ indonesia-apple-1b-deal Nonton, dengar atau baca wawasan lengkapnya di www.bravesea.com/blog/ indonesia-apple-1b-deal 观看、收听或阅读全文,请访问 www.bravesea.com/blog/ indonesia-apple-1b-deal Xem, nghe hoặc đọc toàn bộ thông tin chi tiết tại www.bravesea.com/blog/ indonesia-apple-1b-deal Get transcripts, startup resources & community discussions at www.bravesea.com WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VakR55X6BIElUEvkN02e TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jeremyau Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeremyauz Twitter: https://twitter.com/jeremyau LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/bravesea Spotify English: https://open.spotify.com/show/4TnqkaWpTT181lMA8xNu0T Bahasa Indonesia: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Vs8t6qPo0eFb4o6zOmiVZ Chinese: https://open.spotify.com/show/20AGbzHhzFDWyRTbHTVDJR Vietnamese: https://open.spotify.com/show/0yqd3Jj0I19NhN0h8lWrK1 YouTube English: https://www.youtube.com/@JeremyAu?sub_confirmation=1 Apple Podcast English: https://podcasts.apple.com/sg/podcast/brave-southeast-asia-tech-singapore-indonesia-vietnam/id1506890464 Learn more about Nika.eco! In this episode, we teach you how to order coffee in Italy like a natural. Some of you might see that this is a quasi-repeat of a previous episode. Part of that is due to us learning more about the coffee culture in Italy, and part of that is due to us watching Lidia Poet on Netflix and wondering why they were drinking tea. So in this episode we delve into the history of coffee in Italy, and teach you how to order your favorite drinks. In recent years, the flight has somehow become the worst part of any trip. It's not just the delays and cancellations, but the baggage fees, the seat selection fees if you'd like to do something crazy like sit next to the people you're traveling with, and even the tiny, narrow seats. In this episode (and the next one) we delve into how to prepare for a flight and how to maximize (or minimize) your time in an airport. Because we completely forgot, we also briefly touch on using your credit card travel portal (like Capital One Travel or Chase Travel) to book a flight since they have baked-in protection like price-drop protection and lost baggage reimbursement. You don't need a travel credit card to use these platforms, we use basic, no foreign-transaction fee credit cards like the Savor One and Quicksilver (both are referral links). As we mention in this episode (and the next) something that we've found to be priceless is a power bank. Even though we don't put our boarding passes on our phones, having our phone die while in the midst of a trip can be disastrous. If you'd like to support Only A Bag, you can use our affiliate link for Belkin. However, pretty much any power bank will work! Lastly, as we mentioned in the previous episodes, we rarely book flights through an aggregate, preferring to use the airline's website or our credit card's travel portal. When looking for hotels, we usually cross-reference Booking*, Expedia*, Priceline, and Agoda*. (Affiliate links are marked with an asterisk.) We typically book with Booking.com* because we like their “Genius” deals and it seems like they often have the best or comparable prices.  While Booking, Expedia, and Priceline do offer flight booking we usually use Google Flights or ITA Flight Matrix (also by Google) to find the price-range and then book the flight directly through the carrier or credit card portal. Picking up where we left off, this episode gets into the meat of the matter—the flight itself. Boiled down, it can be summed up as: moisturize, bring noise-cancelling headphones, moisturize, bring a change of clothes, and make sure your skin stays hydrated and moisturized. We also talk about finding the perfect seat on any airplane. To do this, we use SeatGuru. It's often easier to simply search on Google the carrier and plane type, such as "Air France Boeing 777 SeatGuru" and it will direct you to the search result page you need. For noise-cancelling headphones, the world is your oyster. We've found that a pair of $50 headphones works just fine, but you might want to try out something a little more powerful if you fly frequently. *Links with an asterisk are affiliate links. 1.

https://tabelog.com/okinawa/A4701/A470101/47000095/ 4.

Raffy Montemayor, Founder & Philippine Business Head of Salmon, and Jeremy Au discussed three main topics: 1. Country General Manager Learnings: Raffy talked about how his unintentional early experience at Nestle turned out to be pivotal in learning about sales, HSBC for marketing and his experience as an INSEAD MBA. He then went on to lead the Philippines market for Agoda (travel aggregator), OLX Group (global classifieds) and Carousell (regional classifieds unicorn). He shared his learnings on how to best operate as a country General Manager: embrace direct involvement in operations due to the absence of established processes, flexible strategy localized to the actual market, and effective stakeholder management by crafting strong business cases. 2. Classifieds Insights: Raffy explained the classifieds business model: building a user-driven content flywheel to generate organic traffic and achieve market leadership. He discussed the strategic choice and trade-offs between a profitable, smaller-scale operation focused on B2C segments like used car dealerships and real estate companies vs. a broader C2C focus which requires significant marketing investments without immediate revenue generation. He also discussed why and how Facebook is such a strong competitor and substitute. 3. Fintech Founder for the Philippines: Raffy expressed his deep connection to the Philippines, not just emotionally but also in terms of the business opportunities shaped by demographics, income levels, and digital trends. He shares his excitement for the Philippines' underbanked market and why he co-founded Salmon to build financial inclusion, craft a customer-centric experience and utilize technology to build a profitable consumer lending engine. They also talked about professional burnout, becoming a father and experiencing the twists-and-turns of a professional tech career.

OMO3 Asakusa by Hoshino Resorts(OMO3浅草 by 星野リゾート) 官網:https://hoshinoresorts.com/ja/hotels/omo3asakusa/ Agoda:https://reurl.cc/eDr8Dm 1.

Have you ever wanted to create your own path toward travel?  Today I'm joined by Mark White and Steffi Barthel to learn about the inspiring moments that led them to a life of travel, adventure, love, and music. Mark and Steffi met in a small town on the east coast of Australia in November 2016. They now travel around the globe as the world's only Chapman Stick duo, sharing their music and making a difference.  If you're looking for that spark of inspiration to start living life on your own terms, this episode is for you. Mark and Steffi share their unconventional approach to earning a living on the road, their advice for international couples, how music connects them as a couple and to the cultures around them, and so much more.
