What first was planned as a very goofy episode about Kentucky Cryptids, turned into a very serious, slightly controversial, and pretty important discussion about the horrific killing of a UGA student only a few days ago. Furthermore, in this episode we discuss when/how long after death is it morally ok to try and speak to a spirit. We visit the concept of death, being the concept that this show so heavily relies on, and discuss what happens after death. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of recently ID'd Laken Riley, and we hope for proper justice in her brutal death. This is our monthly book club episode, where we discuss "Giants in the Earth" by O.E. Rölvaag. This novel was originally written in Norwegian, and translated to English in the 1920s. This is a story of Norwegian immigrants, crossing the prairie, and finding a new life in a new country. This is not the "Hallmark version" of the immigrants. Reading this book, you can see the midwest culture develop before your eyes, in a historical context. This book also talks about the immigrants struggle without a church, a minister, and how they wrestle through their theology as laypeople. Should they just baptize their children, or marry a couple without a pastor to do it? What happens to their baptism or "christening" if they change their name to an American name? The story focuses on a husband and wife: Per Hansa and Berit. Per Hansa is an eternal optimist. He believes all he sees is his kingdom, and opportunity is around every corner. He goes around the law, forces his own desired destiny, and does what he wants. Berit is homesick for the old country, terrified of the frontier, and worries for their souls with everything changing as the liturgy changes. They establish a new community of other Norwegian immigrants, and they all build sod houses, living surrounded by the ground. They are the giants in the earth. This is a masterful piece of literature, with the earth or nature taking on a character of its own, as the immigrents struggle to survive, and hold their relationships together. Carl Safina is an American ecologist and author. He writes about our relationship with the natural world and the other beings that share it.‘In my writing I explore our relationship with the living world—and how it could be better. My more recent work also probes how free-living animals experience life. What drives my work is a devotion to free-living things and wild places. And what drives that devotion is my deep love and wonder for the living world. ' (from Carlsafina.org).During our conversation, Carl expressed his deep concerns with overpopulation, pollution, climate change, habitat destruction, and the cruelty we inflict on other species. He attributes these issues to a fundamental failure of the education system:“What do we learn by the time we're out of high school? We learn to buy things. We're equipped to just be consumers, not human beings. We don't really learn ethics, we don't learn how to take care of each other, how to take care of the world. We don't learn any kind of perspective that would give us wisdom, let alone some of the humility that you would see in indigenous cultures who revere the world. And what do we all do in the way that we live? We use stuff up. We use things that we don't understand the consequences of. We don't understand their origins. We don't really know anything.”Carl's books include Becoming Wild: How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty, and Achieve Peace; Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel; The View From Lazy Point, and others. Welcome (back) fellow Misfits! On this episode, we get to connect with Meagan Hopper, who is an amazing healer and all-around blast to hang out with. We got to learn about some of Meagan's work which includes working with ceremonial cacao, and sharing what the process of the ceremony is about, as well as the experience of cacao itself. We also discussed another modality Meagan works in, Auriculotherapy (study of the outside of the ear), the vast amount of pressure points on the outer ear that can provide relief all over the body when activated, and how she uses vaccaria seeds in particular for providing that relief. So there's where the episode title came from. We also talk about many other cool thing over the course of the episode, including the experience of release in energy healing the surprising things that can come through healing, especially as we learn to listen to our bodies the real purpose of ego, shadow, whatever other names we use for them (note: they are not all bad-not at all!) truly appreciating the spaces around you, once we can sense past the humanity and other distractions how it's really possible to communicate deeply with animals Meagan's website Meagan's Instagram The Cacao Crowd, Meagan's podcast All Meagan's links Thank you for watching or listening, please like, subscribe and share Misfits Podcast links (including Apple & Spotify): Instagram/ Twitter/ TikTok: @richlevesque10 Join the Misfits Community: Connect to writings, podcasts, other resources of mine: For questions, comments, business inquiries including sponsorships and collaborations: Bumper music credit (music used under license granted through Wondershare, I use Filmora 9 to build my video and audio content): Intro-Riding On by Martin Rose End-The Rhythm of Memories by Earth --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/misfitswanderers/support

Is it possible that your thoughts about regenerating our planet and human well-being matter more than your actions?Tune in to this episode to hear how: Neuroscience, psychology, and spirituality are showing that we create what we focus on. Discouragement and despair do not foster creative solutions. Guided by the science of neuroplasticity, we can choose where we focus and how our focus leads us to feel and act.If we want to repair and regenerate the natural world, we need to begin with how we are thinking and what we are focusing on. I call this Wise Focus. We’re learning to counter-act our tendency to see the negative by choosing Wise Focus instead: seeing the parts of reality that inspire hope and creative action more than we see the parts that promote discouragement. Spiritual teachers and mindset mentors across time have taught what modern neuroscience is now confirming: where we place our focus is crucially important, especially if we desire to create something impactful, beautiful, healing, or regenerative. What this means for your life: I offer examples of how to practice Wise Focus when looking at the environmental and human problems we’re facing. It’s a matter of choosing to see and co-create solutions rather than mourn devastation. Out story on the planet right now is either one of decline or rebirth, depending on what you choose to focus on.4 steps you can take to explore Wise Focus and the ways it leads to Regenerative Vision and Regenerative Outcomes. An upcoming course from The School for Humans and Earth will support you if you want to explore Wise Focus and regenerative action: Collaboration with Earth: Support & Strategies for Your Reverent, Regenerative Service

We’re asking the Earth to support 80 million more humans every year, and we add to the challenge by deleting some of the needed resources from the planet each year. Meanwhile, too few us ask the question, “What is a sustainable human population?” Christopher Tucker did ask the question, went to work on it, and wrote a book about it: A Planet of 3 Billion: Mapping Humanity’s Long History of Ecological Destruction and Finding Our Way to a Resilient Future. He came up with an “optimistic” answer of 3 billion. This episode features the first half of an insightful conversation we recently had with Tucker. Our discussion includes why he avoids using the term “overpopulation” (and why we DO use it), how and why the taboo on discussion of this topic came about, and the beautiful way we can bend the curve of human population numbers. How does achieving a global average fertility rate of 1.5 by 2030 sound? Is that really so crazy? Tucker points out this is just accelerating a norm shift that’s already underway. Christopher Tucker is chairman of the American Geographical Society, and strategic advisor to the US national security community. He holds a BA, MA, and PhD from Columbia University. Chris serves on a number of boards including the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation and the Open Geospatial Consortium. Our mission is to chart a path for human civilization that – rather than causing greater misery – enables good lives on a healthy planet. We advocate and support a smaller, truly sustainable human population – through voluntary reduction in birth rates. We envision a world where no one suffers in dire poverty and misery for lack of enough food, water, and other basic needs. We see a world where all species thrive and where lower consumption and population are in balance with Earth’s finite resources. Our planet is getting rather cosy. In just over 200 years, the global population has grown from 1 billion to almost 7.5 billion – and the best estimates suggest it’s going to keep on increasing. But just how far can it go? When will we reach ‘peak human’? That’s what CrowdScience listeners Alan Donaldson and Francoise Brindle want to know: what’s the latest estimate for how many people the Earth can support? It’s a question that’s been bothering some of the world’s greatest thinkers for hundreds of years, and now presenter Marnie Chesterton goes on her own quest for answers. Her journey takes her through the technology and innovation that keeps our growing population alive, and she looks to Dhaka, Bangladesh, to find out what a more densely populated world might feel like. But are there signs that things are already levelling off? And could improving photosynthesis allow populations to grow without destroying the environment? From Malthus to the Club of Rome, predictions about maximum population size have been too conservative. We now live with 6-7 billion others and the "population bomb" is yet to explode. So what really is the upper limit for healthy coexistence?
