This is an episode of my newest Podcast, LRC. In this podcast, we read short fiction. If you enjoy it, please subscribe on Apple or Spotify!Ray Bradbury (1920-2012) was an iconic American author, celebrated for his profound contributions to science fiction and fantasy literature. Born in Waukegan, Illinois, Bradbury developed a passion for writing at an early age, fueled by a love of adventure and imagination. His most famous work, "Fahrenheit 451" (1953), a dystopian novel about a future society where books are banned and burned, remains a cornerstone of American literature and a powerful commentary on censorship and conformity. Bradbury's prolific career spanned over seven decades, producing an extensive body of work that includes novels, short stories, plays, and screenplays. Collections like "The Martian Chronicles" (1950) and "The Illustrated Man" (1951) showcase his lyrical prose and ability to blend the fantastical with the human experience. In addition to his literary achievements, Bradbury's influence extended into popular culture through adaptations of his work in film, television, and theater. His legacy endures as a visionary storyteller who used speculative fiction to explore profound themes about society, humanity, and the future.

By 2020 he was competing in the Tokyo Olympics (he finished 8th), and he claimed gold in the men's 10m platform World Championships event in 2023, creating history for the Australian diving team by becoming the first Australian men's 10m platform world champion. He heads into his second Olympics, in Paris, adorned with tattoos - one for every country he's been to. The university student was also recently named World Aquatics Diving Athlete of the Year for 2023.  Cassiel sits down with former Australian water polo player and Olympian Rowie Webster to chat about how he got into diving, how he deals with his fear of heights and what it takes to become an elite athlete. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Now, let's say you're a woman, and you're married to a man who likes to draw sexually explicit pictures of redheaded women. You're not a redhead. Should you be jealous or angry? Or does it not really matter? And, what if he slips off to do it at inconvenient times? If your female partner wants to have an MMF threesome with you, and the other man wants to "eat the leavings" after you and your partner have PIV sex, should you be ok with that? Does it matter if a man ingests your semen after you've made the deposit? We get a lot of our questions from Reddit, so for our listeners' enjoyment, here are links to some of the questions we discussed this week: https://ymmv.me/141/threesome https://ymmv.me/141/crying https://ymmv.me/141/fast https://ymmv.me/141/illustrator https://ymmv.me/141/too-long Twitter: @ymmvpod Facebook: ymmvpod Email: ymmvpod@gmail.com

Wednesdays are about to get even better.  This week we're continuing our little foray into the world of classic science fiction.  The New York Times dubbed Ray Bradbury, “The writer most responsible for bringing modern science fiction into the literary mainstream”. While he wrote chiefly in the realm of speculative fiction, he also worked in other genres, including horror, mystery, and coming of age fiction.  His best-known works include the novel Fahrenheit 451, his collections of short stories, The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man, and the speculative horror novel Something Wicked This Way Comes. Today's story was first published in the pulp magazine, Thrilling Wonder Stories, in October 1948.  And now, The Square Pegs, by Ray Bradbury.  Follow this link to become a monthly supporter:   Follow this link to subscribe to our YouTube Channel:    Check out our blog about how audiobooks are made:

Along with special guest Longinus, the boys drink and review Space Dust IPA by Elysium brewing, then discuss a few short stories from The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury. The premise of the collection is that you can see the stories in the collection played out by looking at the tattoos of a carny. This podcast includes reviews of the following stories. The Veldt - problems arise when spoiled children get addicted to their "smart room." Kaleidoscope - a tale of how people react when facing certain death on their own in space. The Other Foot -- all the Earth's black population has moved to Mars. The remaining population on Earth destroy the planet and come to Mars begging for help. The Man - Space farers, moving from planet to planet, just miss "the man." The captain becomes obsessed with catching up with him. The Rocket Man - Working in space is addictive. When you're in space you want to be on Earth, and vice versa. The story inspired Elton John's song.

Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Bookwaves Isaac Asimov (1920-1992), in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded in New York City on August 10, 1983. Isaac Asimov, who died at the age of 72 in 1992, was considered, along with Ray Bradbury and Robert Heinlein, one of the three great masters of American science fiction in the 20th century. Isaac Asimov began sending in stories and getting published in science fiction magazines at the age of nineteen, and at the age of 21, with the publication of the short story “Nightfall” in John W. Campbell's Astounding Stories magazine. moved into the first ranks of science fiction writers. That status was confirmed a year later with the publication of the short story, “Foundation,” later renamed “The Encyclopedists,” which would be the first of several short stories and novellas republished as the three volumes of the Foundation trilogy. In the 1940s, he turned to a series of stories focused on robots, which became the collection I Robot and then in the 1950s turned to novels, including Pebble in the Sky, The Caves of Steel and The End of Eternity. Along the way, through his entire career, he wrote dozens of non-fiction books on a wide variety of topics, along with young adult novels, and mystery novels and short stories. In the end, the number of books he wrote or edited exceeded 500, not counting separate short stories and articles. This interview was conducted in a New York City bookstore Asimov was visiting to sign copies of a new collection, The Union Club Mysteries, a year after his return to the world of the Foundation trilogy, Foundation's Edge, was published. Because his two –volume autobiography had come out a couple of years earlier and dealt with the plots and themes of his fiction, the interview focused instead on his life as a writer and his work with editors and publishers. It's hard to believe in the modern age of sheer bombast and explosion filled CG lightshows for their own sake, but not that long ago, the world of science fiction, yes, even that of the American cinema, tended to be devoted to a very different purpose and aesthetic. Like their low paid visionary scribes from the likes of Welles and Verne in the 1800s to the pulps of the 20's and 30's and the edge of current science devotees and aspirationists of the 1950s, the science fiction authors of the 1960s and early 70's had far more in mind than a cheap hour or two of mindless escapism from an increasingly dreary corporatocratic nightmare world we've all come to accept as if it were predestined master rather than an out of control dog to be brought to heel. For a few decades in particular, a hard SF mix of utopian aspiration and dystopian commentary and warning about then-new trends arising in contemporary society informed nearly every instance of same, from the lowest of budget to the highest of the highbrow, from the critically feted to the mocked and hated.   Many of these names have gone on into legend: Orwell, Bradbury, Ellison, Ballard, Dick, Zelazny.  And many films built off or inspired by such literary works have held their place in pop culture circles: The Planet of the Apes films, 2001: A Space Odyssey...and many of the otherwise unrelated films we'll be discussing this evening, like Fahrenheit 451, The Illustrated Man, The Omega Man, Soylent Green, Silent Running, A Boy and His Dog and Damnation Alley. So join us tonight as we speak of those hoary days before Spielberg and Lucas turned cinema into a wasteland of brainless popcorn fare, and realize just how many of the horrors warned against may already have come into being in our day and age, begging the question: why didn't we listen?  Come and see what answers await, as we talk the thought provoking dystopias of the counterculture era, right here on Weird Scenes! The Homeland generation was born starting in 2005 - but what does it mean? Why Homeland? And are they really quite what Strauss & Howe predicted they would be?  It does seem about right. That tweet I mentioned is here: https://twitter.com/generationalize/status/1432384151143944197?s=20 There's no separate Wikipedia entry for The Rocket Man, and in fact my copy is in R is For Rocket, but Wikipedia says it was first published in The Illustrated Man https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Illustrated_Man http://afterthemillennials.com/its-official-the-white-house-calls-them-homeland-generation/ Couldn't find a way to include this but: The Rocket Man is set in, well, right about now, since the titular character was  “a boy in 1997” and the narrator is mentioned as being fourteen years old, so it'd be quite reasonable to think that he was born about ten years after the father was a boy, and …yeah. It's not a tumultuous world, so would seem to be after a Crisis like we have now. Also, the story is only 10 pages long. It fits a lot in there.

Prolific composer and musician Roger Mason joins The Film Scorer Podcast! They talk broadly about Roger's media compositions and approach, as well as: the differences between Australian and American productions; figuring out how to play what's in your head; and the famed Australian musician David Page. Note that there's no small talk on this one - Roger jumps straight into the heavy stuff! I was particularly excited to talk with Roger given his pre-composing background. He was well known on the post-punk/new wave scene, playing in Models, Gary Numan's backing band, and the supergroup Illustrated Man (with members of Japan and Gang of four), while also touring with Wall of Voodoo. Though Roger expected to have left that lifestyle long behind, he's recently worked with Steve Kilbey (of The Church) on a number of projects, including the album "The Hall of Counterfeits" by Steve Kilbey & the Winged Heels. Find out more about Roger on his website. Many of Roger's scores are available on all major streaming platforms, and the films and shows themselves are available across a variety of streaming platforms too.

At this signal from the Grim Reaper of Cats, the staff alerted family, enabling them to say their goodbyes. Oscar's predictions have set the standard for medical practitioners, who still can't hope to match him. How does he do it? And, more intriguingly, why? This week's Tale is a short story from one of the greats of American literature - and science fiction in particular - Ray Bradbury. He was credited by the New York Times as being the writer most responsible for making science fiction a mainstream genre. Shortly before the period of intense activity that produced "Farenheit 451", Bradbury wrote this unnerving short story with Henry Hasse in 1941. It was his first professional writing credit, and the start of a formidable career. Taking just three of Bradbury's stories—"The Veldt", "The Long Rain" and "The Last Night of the World"—the film ties them together, as does the book, with the framing device of "The Illustrated Man", a vagrant ex-circus-freak-show-performer with a heavily tattooed body, whose "body illustrations"—created by an allegedly time-travelling woman—seem to possess a supernatural power to transfix anyone who stares at the images and transport them into "the future". But is this really about "the future", or is it something more like "possible worlds"? Are we looking at science fiction here, or is it closer to fanstasy? Indeed, does the film even know what it's doing?
