WOTA #279 - The Function of Beauty

Way of the Artist Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 5, 2025 75:48

What makes something truly beautiful? Is beauty something we create, or is it something we discover? In this episode, we dive deep into the essence of beauty—its role in art, creativity, and life itself. We explore how beauty can be designed but also how it often emerges unpredictably, striking us in ways we never expected. True beauty isn't just about surface appeal; it has depth, meaning, and a life of its own. But when we try too hard to manufacture beauty from the wrong place, we risk creating something hollow, something that looks perfect at first glance but falls apart upon closer inspection. Real beauty includes the mess, the rawness, the imperfections—it's in the thorn as much as it's in the rose. When artists embrace this, they have the power to shift perspectives, showing us how even something "ugly" can be breathtaking in the right light. This conversation will challenge the way you think about beauty and inspire you to explore your art in ways that might just change everything.     Key Themes & Takeaways:   Beauty is real, but we don't fully control it. Some of it can be designed, but much of it is wild, chaotic, and surprising. The most powerful beauty is often discovered, not manufactured.   Depth vs. Surface-Level Beauty: Authentic beauty runs deep and has substance beyond its presentation. Fake beauty may look impressive but can feel empty, lifeless, or even ugly upon closer examination.   The Role of the Artist in Revealing Beauty: True beauty includes the full picture—the flaws, the heartbreak, the unexpected elements. Great artists help us see the world differently, finding beauty in what others overlook.   The Risk of Creating from the Wrong Place: Trying to force beauty can lead to something that feels artificial and disconnected. Instead of chasing perfection, embrace the raw, real, and unfiltered.   A New Way to See & Create: Beauty is not just in what is obviously "pretty"—it's in the contrast, the complexity, the truth. This shift in perspective can revolutionize the way you approach your own creativity.     Why Listen? This episode is for artists, creatives, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of beauty—what it is, how it functions, and why it matters. If you've ever struggled with making your work feel authentic or questioned why some things resonate more deeply than others, this conversation will offer powerful insights. Join us as we uncover the real function of beauty and explore how embracing its unpredictability can elevate your art, your perspective, and your creative process.     -- (Photo by Sarah Dorweiler on Unsplash)   ...And if you're loving the show, don't forget to hit that SUBSCRIBE button, SHARE IT with your friends, and VISIT OUR WEBSITE for even more content!  www.WayoftheArtist.com

One of Sophia's owls of wisdom made friends with a delightful and insightful human, the author and ecologist Carl Safina. If you enjoyed My Octopus Teacher, you will love hearing about Carl Safina's fabulous feathered friend, Alfie. Carl's book, Alfie and Me: What Owls Know, What Humans Believe, is a wonderful work of philosophy and ecology, and I think you'll enjoy this dialogue as much as I did. It was a great pleasure to speak with him.Carl Safina's lyrical non-fiction writing explores how humans are changing the living world, and what the changes mean for non-human beings and for us all. His work fuses scientific understanding, emotional connection, and a moral call to action. His writing has won a MacArthur “genius” prize; Pew, Guggenheim, and National Science Foundation Fellowships; book awards from Lannan, Orion, and the National Academies; and the John Burroughs, James Beard, and George Rabb medals. He grew up raising pigeons, training hawks and owls, and spending as many days and nights in the woods and on the water as he could. Safina is now the first Endowed Professor for Nature and Humanity at Stony Brook University and is founding president of the not-for-profit Safina Center. He hosted the PBS series Saving the Ocean, which can be viewed free at PBS.org. His writing appears in The New York Times, TIME, The Guardian, Audubon, Yale e360, and National Geographic, and on the Web at Huffington Post, CNN.com, Medium, and elsewhere. Safina is the author of ten books including the classic Song for the Blue Ocean, as well as New York Times Bestseller Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel. His most recent books are, Becoming Wild: How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty, and Achieve Peace and Alfie & Me: What Owls Know, What Humans Believe. Carl Safina's lyrical non-fiction writing explores how humans are changing the living world, and what the changes mean for non-human beings and for us all. His work has been recognized with MacArthur, Pew, and Guggenheim Fellowships, and his writing has won Orion, Lannan, and National Academies literary awards and the John Burroughs, James Beard, and George Rabb medals. Safina is the inaugural holder of the endowed chair for nature and humanity at Stony Brook University, where he co-chairs the steering committee of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science and is founding president of the not-for-profit Safina Center. He hosted the 10-part PBS series Saving the Ocean with Carl Safina. His writing appears in The New York Times, National Geographic, Audubon, CNN.com, National Geographic News, and other publications. He is the author of ten books including the classic Song for the Blue Ocean, as well as New York Times Bestseller Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel. His most recent book is Becoming Wild: How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty, and Achieve Peace."So we tend to take living for granted. I think that might be the biggest limitation of human intelligence is to not understand with awe and reverence and love that we live in a miracle that we are part of and that we have the ability to either nurture or destroy. The living world is enormously enriching to human life. I just loved animals. They're always just totally fascinating. They're not here for us. They're just here like we're just here. They are of this world as much as we are of this world. They really have the same claim to life and death and the circle of being."www.safinacenter.orgwww.carlsafina.orgwww.oneplanetpodcast.orgwww.creativeprocess.infoIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcastPhoto: Carl Safina in Uganda

Declining biodiversity is a problem as fraught as climate change. Loss of habitat, monoculture crops, and the damming of waterways all lead to massive species extinction. They tear at life's delicate web, and threaten a balance established by four billion years of evolution. Can we reassess our relationship to Nature? We consider logging efforts that make elephants part of the work force, and how to leverage the cooperative behavior of trees. Becoming Nature's ally, rather than its enemy. Guests: Suzanne Simard – Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia and author of “Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest.” Carl Safina – Professor of Nature and Humanity at Stony Brook University and founder of the Safina Center, and author of “Becoming Wild: How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty, and Achieve Peace.” Jacob Shell – Professor of Geography and Urban Studies at Temple University, and author of “Giants of the Monsson Forest: Living and Working with Elephants.” Originally aired November 8, 2021 Featuring music by Dewey Dellay and Jun Miyake Big Picture Science is part of the Airwave Media podcast network. Please contact sales@advertisecast.com to inquire about advertising on Big Picture Science. Jonathan Bastian talks with Carl Safina, naturalist, marine ecologist, and founding president of The Safina Center at Stony Brook University in New York, about the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Author of several books including “Beyond Words: What Animals Think And Feel” and, most recently, “Becoming Wild: How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty, and Achieve Peace,” Safina explores the inner lives of animals and the role that culture and family play in the behavior of animals.  “Wolves are animals that, by nature, live in … family groups,” Safina notes. “They hunt together cooperatively, but what they hunt and how they hunt can differ a lot from region to region. And it can even differ a lot from family to family in the same place. For instance, in Yellowstone National Park, there's really only one wolf family there, which is very skilled at hunting bison.  “For most wolves, bison are just too big and too tough. So how are they skilled? They weren't born that way. They learned it from adults who learned how to do it and taught their young ones.” Delve deeper into life, philosophy, and what makes us human by joining the Life Examined discussion group on Facebook.

"So we tend to take living for granted. They really have the same claim to life and death and the circle of being."Carl Safina's lyrical non-fiction writing explores how humans are changing the living world, and what the changes mean for non-human beings and for us all. His most recent book is Becoming Wild: How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty, and Achieve Peace.www.safinacenter.orgwww.carlsafina.orgwww.oneplanetpodcast.orgwww.creativeprocess.info
