East Coast Host Gary K4AAQ had volunteered to do radio at a local Christmas parade. As he was lacing up his sneakers, about to leave home, wife Cyndi KD4ACW called to dispatch him to the hospital where mom had been taken with chest pains. Gary had planned to do some video and interviews at the event for today's show. Instead Gary and West Coast Host David W0DHG talk about how to weigh conflicting obligations to family and community (and Podcasting). (Mom didn't have a heart issue, but it was still something serious. She's OK now)David also had comments on how his favorite event, the Baker to Vegas charity run, has decided to replace ham radio with communications from Verizon (while still urging them to volunteer for other jobs). There's more to that story, and it's not isolated to that event. The MS Society is using ham radio less for smaller, more urban walks. And in the Emcomm arena, Auxcom leaders have been saying that hams should be cross-trained for communication on other systems. That's something to dig into on a future show.Meanwhile, we noted that the new FCC rule dropping the data-rate restriction of ‘300 baud' on the HF bands, replacing it with a 2.8 kHz bandwidth limit, has finally been published in the Federal Register, and will take effect on January 8, 2024. So not quite the Christmas present we expected, but Happy New Year! And a FNPRM (Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking) clock is ticking for comments on how to handle data rate/bandwidth of the VLF, VHF and UHF bands. That spectrum is not covered by the new HF data bandwidth rule. Finally, no news on the Netflix Watch. HRN Episode 506, How Can We Podcast with All This Light?, is still dark on YouTube due to Netflix's copyright complaint. Check Episode 506 for details, and listen to the audio version while the video is down.

Do you own a weather radio? Do you know why you need one?
There's a 90% Eclipse coming for the western US on October 14 this year, and a total Eclipse for the Midwest and Northeast on April 8, 2024. During the total Eclipse in 2017, hundreds of thousands of people flooded rural areas across the country in the relatively narrow ribbon of 'totality' (115 miles, but everyone wanted to be at the center line). They came over the course of hours or even days, but they all left at once when the show was over (and nobody cared about the next 90 minutes of the waning eclipse after they'd seen totality). All that created gridlock on the highways, and overload on the cell system. The same is expected on April 8 next year, when a total eclipse moves from Texas through the Midwest and on to New England. And that presents an opportunity for hams to lend a hand with communications, if they're organized and prepared. Our guest is JM Rowe N5XFW, Arkansas Section Emergency Coordinator (among many other Emcomm titles). He's working on getting his state's hams ready, and coordinating with neighboring states as well.

Just over two weeks ago, Hurricane Ian devastated Sanibel Island and southwestern Florida. It caused tens of billions of dollars of damage and killed more than 100 people. Arc Thames, W4CPD, the Section Emergency Coordinator of ARRL's Northern Florida Section and Emergency Coordinator of Santa Rosa County Florida, passed traffic during the storm and shares some of his experiences. He discusses gear for ARES deployments (A handheld is just fine!) and what you need to know before going out in the field. Final score: 2172 points! (but it's totally not a contest.) Had a great turn out! About 12 people total, 7 active hams who played with the radios at least a bit. Ran entirely on solar power, only spun up the generator for a couple minutes to make sure it worked, and show another person how (it's mod'd for Propane.) 2 stations, 100W both, using nothing but solar. I'm really proud of that. SSB station: FT-920, on an EFHW, cut for 40m (so resonates on 40/20/15/10m), but added a loading coil and stub to add 80m. It worked really well, but required more tuning at the radio than I anticipated. The loading coil was 13 turns of antenna wire around an FT140-43 (which should have been about 110uH, except that it totally isn't, it's 150uH, I should have done 11 turns… Oops…) All the designs I've seen show a linear coil of antenna wire around a form, not a toroid. I'm wondering if the capacitive coupling of the toroid was different enough from the linear coil to affect tuning on 40m and above. (The wrong inductance should have only negatively affected 80m, which definitely was tuned too low.) Used the feedline as a counterpoise, put a current choke 1:1 balun about 12 feet from the feedpoint: 13 turns of RG-8X around an FT240-43. You think wrapping magnet wire around toroids is a pain? CW/Digital station: Club member brought his Packtenna clipped dipole. Used it with his Flex6600 and Maestro. Worked a charm. 20m SSB was CHEEK BY JOWEL...
