Elle argues this reflects the current societal value of time, peace, and an abundance of fresh food, which many people do not have. She also discusses how health and wealth are intertwined, with the wealthy having the privilege of better food, housing, and medical care, which contributes to better health. Elle emphasizes that knowledge is a critical privilege, particularly in understanding how to balance macronutrients, where to find affordable groceries, and how to cook. She concludes by highlighting the need for community and shared knowledge in these challenging times.
Social media content makers celebrating their role as "traditional wives" are enjoying a startling rise in popularity. Influencers such as Nara Smith, Emily Mariko and Ballerina Farm are baking, procreating and home-making their way to millions of followers. So why is their #Tradwife vision of submissive domesticity so appealing in 2024? We ask Caroline Burke, a cultural critic and journalist at Katie Couric Media.
This week we discuss Gwyneth's ongoing relationship with Saudi Arabia as reported by the New York Post, follow up on last week's mystery Receipt-er, dive into all the Kate Middleton conspiracy theories, and have a difficult but necessary conversation about food influencer M*lly B*z. Plus, Goop's big WWD award, the environmental and nutritional benefits of different types of milk, fancy shower heads, Emily Mariko's Green Chef deal, ageless locket designers and more! Even if you're not on FoodTok, you probably know it exists . Every day, our algorithms fill our feeds with cooking hacks, recipe walkthroughs, and ambient ASMR moments. We can't look away, but we also can't help but wonder: Does any of it actually work? To find out, senior food editor Christina Chaey and BA's head of video June Kim spent a day cooking meals from TikTok—yes, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This week on the podcast, they're reporting on how it went and giving their definitive (read: totally subjective) rankings of some of the platform's most iconic foods. We have a little different podcast episode this week! I wanted to start a case study series that dives deep into different facets of the wellness industry, especially how wellness intersects with business/marketing/psychology. Emily Mariko is a content creator on TikTok and IG that shares no-voiceover vlog style content of her life, mainly cooking focused. She rose to fame and grew to 1M+ followers due to the virility of her salmon rice bowl recipe. I've been a fan of hers for a long time and she is definitely my comfort creator. Her comment section is always wild with everyone and their mother judging her recipes. Obviously, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It is definitely interesting to break down the types of comments she gets and how they directly connect with lack of food education, accessibility, and financial inequality. Let me know who what/who I should discuss next month! Check out the blog post about today's episode! What was really going on when Lauren visited her boyfriend Robbie at college, surprising him as he sat on a couch with three girls? It turned into TikTok's hottest clip, of course, with millions of fans picking apart whether the 20-second clip was definitive proof of Robbie cheating. After watching roughly 6,000 response videos breaking down theories, we talked to actual body language expert Traci Brown, who reveals which people in the TikTok you should be paying attention to — and it's not Lauren or Robbie. “Something is going on more than what we know,” Brown tells Rolling Stone. This week we also bring you a look at what makes Emily Mariko's leftover salmon videos so appealing, and a special double-Himbo of the Week. Don't Let This Flop is a weekly podcast from Rolling Stone, centered around a roundup of this week in TikTok trends and memes, from dances to recipes to makeup challenges to creepy viral videos to celebrity videos to grassroots campaigns intended to raise awareness of social issues. Join hosts Brittany Spanos and EJ Dickson as they unpack their significance, with a special guests to break down the latest trends in TikTok.
