Send us a textWhen the Coen brothers parted ways after decades of collaboration, film fans wondered what their individual work might reveal about their creative dynamic. Drive Away Dolls, Ethan Coen's first solo directorial effort, provides a fascinating if frustrating answer to that question. This deep-dive episode explores how the absence of Joel's balancing influence results in a film where Ethan's stylistic tendencies become exaggerated to the point of self-parody. We analyze how the film's inconsistent tone, from Margaret Qualley's baffling Southern accent to the cartoon sound effects that punctuate scenes, creates a disjointed viewing experience where characters seem to exist in entirely different movies.Through our conversation, we unpack why character relationships fall flat despite talented performers, how scenes lack proper setup and payoff, and why the film's attempts at madcap comedy often miss their mark. We highlight Beanie Feldstein's standout performance as the one consistently enjoyable element in an otherwise chaotic film.Beyond mere criticism, our discussion examines the creative alchemy of successful partnerships and what happens when that balance is disrupted. We explore how the screenplay (reportedly written around 2000 and never updated) feels anachronistic in both humor and sensibilities, raising questions about creative decisions throughout production.Whether you're a Coen brothers aficionado curious about their separate trajectories or simply interested in the dynamics of creative collaboration, this episode offers thoughtful analysis on how even talented filmmakers sometimes need the right partnership to bring out their best work. The conversation serves as both a critique of Drive Away Dolls and a celebration of what made the Coen brothers' joint filmography so special.Written Lovingly by AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

The plot follows Jamie and Marian, two lesbian besties who could not be more different from one another, as they take a road trip to Tallahassee while being pursued by some very inefficient goons. Coen brothers movies are known for a flavor of dark humor and a level of absurdity that can be polarizing, and this one is no exception. While Leigh (and her wife) found Drive-Away Dolls hilarious, Ellie won't be rewatching anytime soon. If you're hoping to find a new ship to stay up late reading about on Ao3, you'll probably be disappointed. Although the level of lesbian shenanigans is off the charts from Jamie's L Word vibe to the sheer number of dildos on screen at any given time, the sexual chemistry between the leads is not believable. While we can't quite root for Jamie and Marian as a couple, we still found the movie enjoyable as an outlandishly gay comedy. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on Drive-Away Dolls, titled “Member of Congress”, written by Leigh Holmes Foster and produced by Ellie Brigida. NYC-based luxury womenswear brand Lafayette 148 has earned a loyal, influential customer base in its 28-year history — many members of which turned out for the brand's spring 2025 collection presentation in NYC's Chelsea neighborhood on Monday. Among recognizable attendees viewing the elegant, art-inspired designs were actresses Beanie Feldstein, Rachel Brosnahan and Karen Pittman, among others. A designer at the company for 22 years, starting as a design assistant, Emily Smith is now Lafayette 148's creative director. As such, her work is largely fueling the brand's fandom. “It's women dressing women,” Smith said on the latest Glsosy Podcast. “We know the fuss of getting dressed in the morning and what you do and don't want to deal with. … And we want to dress our customer seven days a week.”  Also on the podcast, Smith discussed the importance of fashion week in today's fashion ecosystem, the secrets to navigating the “up and down” luxury market, and the perks of working for a “completely vertical” company.

Some may balk at this comparison, but I think it's not only apt, but is a sparkling compliment: Booksmart is a female version of Superbad. Both are about strong high school friendships and how they are affected with the eventuality of adulthood. Both show the excitement and anxiety of their upcoming responsibilities. Both have uproariously hilarious comedy throughout the entire film. The two actresses, Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever, are both charming and hilarious. Playing two academic overachievers who realize they didn't create memories in High School, they play their performances playfully and believable as these characters fumble into getting into a party run by one of the more popular kids in school. They both carry the film quite well, but it's Dever and her desire to approach and get with a crush that is more emotionally resonant. Booksmart also has great supporting performances with Billie Lourd as a uproarious standout. Her constant gag of appearing in places she isn't expected to be in offers hilarious scenes when she appears. Booksmart has all the laughs, characters and heart that Superbad has when it was released in the 2000s. In my mind, both films are equals and Booksmart would be a great film to watch as a double feature with Superbad.

The Coen Brothers are back!  Well actually just one of them (Ethan Coen) but he's here to direct while also co-writing and co-producing with his wife and long-term Coen's collaborator Tricia Cooke.  And what they have collaborated to deliver is an ambling, quirky, violent crime drama/comedy in the GREAT tradition of previous Coen Brothers' films like Burn After Reading, Fargo, or Raising Arizona.....but is it quite as good as those films?  Well the cast certainly helps as it stars Margaret Qualley (Once Upon A Time in America) and Geraldine Viswanathan (Blockers) as two young ladies who embark on a road trip from Philly to Tallahassee, only to discover that they have a hidden package in their rented car with some VERY sketchy items. :o And of course, there are now various folks chasing after them played by a very stacked cast including Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp, Pedro Pascal, and Matt Damon.  So let's find out if this '90's throwback lives up to its pedigree....  Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

As you'll hear in this edition of Collider Ladies Night, Beanie Feldstein is a favorite. She's a hugely talented individual, with a deep passion for the craft of acting who heavily values the opportunity to create with good people. There's no doubt a good deal of that was in her from the start, but in revisiting her filmography in celebration of the release of her latest film, Drive-Away Dolls, it becomes abundantly clear that Feldstein is able to stand tall, deliver big and use her voice to change this industry for the better because she's been well encouraged and supported by some of the best out there.Feldstein plays Sukie Shankleman in Tricia Cooke and Ethan Cohen's Drive-Away Dolls. Fresh out of a relationship with Margaret Qualley's Jamie, Sukie is on the warpath. She's a no-nonsense cop who isn't about to let Jamie get away with breaking her heart. When Jamie and Geraldine Viswanathan's Marian get mixed up with some criminals while road tripping to Tallahassee, Sukie has no problem giving the goons the information they need to put them hot on Jamie and Marian's trail.Collider Ladies Night interviews are meant to be career-spanning conversations touching on as many titles as possible. In Feldstein's case, however, the interview often came back to one specific film, which is a beautiful thing. Feldstein told me, “Lady Bird changed my whole life and career.”Check out what Feldstein told me about working with Greta Gerwig on her feature directorial debut, collaborating with "one of the single most brilliant people I've ever been around," Sarah Paulson, making Drive-Away Dolls with Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan, and loads more on this edition of Collider Ladies Night! This week on Cinemaholics, Jon Negroni and Will Ashton discuss the new dark comedy road film Drive-Away Dolls, directed by Ethan Coen — who co-wrote the film with Tricia Cooke — and starring Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp, Matt Damon, and Will Ashton. Will is of course excited to talk about the film since he shows up in it as an extra, along with his car. But Jon expresses some disappointments he had with the movie's script and editing choices. Drive-Away Dolls opens in theaters on February 23 through Focus Features. Discussion Points:  Why our listeners might enjoy working on a film set if that opportunity ever comes their way! Why some critics stop reviewing films after working in the industry Jon and Will talk about how Ethan and Joel Coen have fared as solo filmmakers thus far. Jon explains the setup of Drive-Away Dolls, including its development hell production, and gives some broad criticism while Will defends its humor and political themes. Will considers the movie quite breezy at just 84 minutes. Pedro Pascal's role in the film is minimal and does not contribute much to the overall story. Jon argues the movie suffers from awkward staging and a lack of engagement, making it difficult for viewers to connect with the characters and plot. Inconsistencies in the script suggest that certain elements may have been cut or altered during production, resulting in a disjointed viewing experience. Jon describes the movie as a collection of vignettes that vary in quality, with some being entertaining and others falling flat. Will appreciates the humor of the opening scene and how it made him feel at ease about the rest of the film Jon's overall takeaway is that Drive-Away Dolls fails to leave a lasting impact and is not particularly memorable. Audience reactions and reviews for the film are not yet available, but Jon and Will express curiosity about others' opinions. Jon and Will play the Rotten Tomatoes game for Vacation Friends 2 (for some reason), speculating on its critical and audience scores. Upcoming topics might include discussions on Madame Web and Bob Marley: One Love, as well as Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Four years ago, the release of this film marked the directorial debut of Olivia Wilde who up until this time had mostly been well-known as an actress.  And she really does make quite a memorable debut with this raunchy "One Crazy Night" comedy about two soon-to-be-high-school graduates (Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein) who are the smartest students in their class and the best of friends.  As one of them just found out that they are not the only graduates in their class who are going on to bigger and better things, they decide to spend this one last night before graduation to show that they can also have "fun" with the best of them.  And what results is a night of parties, drugs, homicidal cabbies, fancy yachts, and various other hijinks!  Also along for the ride are co-stars Jessica Williams, Mason Gooding, Diana Silvers, Molly Gordon, and Billie Lourd.Host: Geoff Gershon Special Guest Co-Host: Isabelle Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
