New forms of video creation are coming to disrupt the entertainment industry, but will they succeed? John and Craig look at verticals and Veo 3 to see where we might be heading, and what our industry's past innovations might tell us about about the future. We also look at Memorial Day's banner box office, and answer listener questions on bereavement during production, momentum, scene geography and how to fight motion smoothing. From middle schoolers riffing on school lunch to kids interviewing political figures, podcasting is no longer just for adults. With high-end mics, massive TikTok followings, and brand deals from major companies, tween podcast hosts are building real media platforms from their bedrooms and local studios.New York Magazine's EJ Dickson joins me to break down who the major players are in this growing space, including the MD Foodie Boyz, SaltyBoys, GSD Nation, the LOL Pod, and more. These tween stars have loyal fan bases, viral moments, and increasingly, the attention of advertisers looking to reach Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences. We examine how kid-led podcasts are mirroring the formats and attitudes of older influencers, from Joe Rogan to the Paul brothers. And how, as more kids turn the mic on themselves and start broadcasting their opinions, jokes, and hot takes to the world, it's reshaping what media looks like for the next generation. EJ and I discuss how this trend took off, where it might be going, and what it says about the future of content creation.Subscribe to my newsletter: https://www.usermag.coSubscribe to my YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TaylorLorenz Follow me on IG: https://www.instagram.com/taylorlorenz Follow me on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/taylorlorenz.bsky.social

But Pleasure Island closed in 2003, and people are having babies later and later (if ever at all), and so now the Disney theme parks have become a veritable playground for a whole new group of fans: grown ups. In this episode, Hannah and Maia talk about Disney adults - their malignment by the general public, their strange religiosity, and their unabashed love of a conglomerate that routinely tramples on the rights of its workers. But, after all, Disney was designed to be a a nostalgic teet from which lost adult souls may suck. So why is it that when adults like Disney, we hate them for it? Hamilton: the musical that launched a thousand lip-biting memes. Almost a decade ago, Lin Manuel Miranda's race-bending rap-sical took broadway by storm and rose to unprecedented levels of success, amassing a dedicated, almost fanatical global fanbase. Yet with ticket prices starting at $400 a pop, the vast majority of these fans had never actually seen the show. Even stranger, in 2016 you could throw a rock and hit about three Hamilton fans, but today it seems like a title no one wants to claim. In this episode, Hannah, Maia, and their friend and long-time collaborator Sara Harvey, go mask-off to discuss Hamilton as it relates to their love of theatre. Is Hamilton a transgressive emulation or veneration of the founding fathers? How much of the show's backlash is about its real historical flaws, and how much is a symptom of our irony-poisoning? And how much does theatre lose when it's spliced up and broadcasted on the internet? For one brief, beautiful moment in history, the social media sleuths were right. When Britney Spears' fans began to decode strange messaging in her quirky Instagram posts, it became clear that the formerly maligned popstar was living under the control of her abusive father by way of a particularly oppressive conservatorship. This resulted in a nation-wide movement to liberate Britney from her family and, by extension, the predatory industry that has exploited her for over two decades. But, well-intentioned as #FreeBritney was, did the movement have unintended consequences? Discussions include: the 2000s as the dark ages for popular culture, Vegas residencies as the death rattle for celebrity music careers, and the ongoing question of “agency” that seems to follows Britney Spears throughout her lifetime. Digressions include: Maia's irrational fear of Babe the pig and a chat about the emojis that define us.  (NOTE: We refer in this episode to Cara Cunningham as Chris Crocker, which is her dead name.) But we're not so much getting into the actual divorce, more the way tabloid news is covering it and leaning into some seriously sexist tropes. As news spread about the marriage's end, articles immediately started speculating as to who was at fault, and tabloids reported using anonymous sources saying Turner was more focused on partying and going out, leaving Jonas at home with their two young kids. Kat is joined by Rolling Stone senior writer Ej Dickson, to dig into the long history of sexist tropes about mothers and motherhood, the “bad mommy” PR spin, and more.  Further Reading: Sophie Turner Isn't A Bad Mom. Today we start with a deep dive into Rolling Stone reporter Ej Dickson, who is in the process of writing a smear piece on conservative hosts who speak out against transgender ideology and the grooming of children. Turns out, Ej has a history of running cover for and essentially trying to normalize pedophilia. Then, we go over the Wall Street Journal article that exposes how Instagram is being used by child predators to communicate and organize with each other. Lastly, we talk about yet another disappointing Instagram post from Jen Hatmaker, in which she commemorates Pride Month by reminiscing about an interview in which she first announced that she is LGBTQ-affirming. Although we only have limited research, many report beneficial effects on this microdosing.  Luke Winkie, contributor to Vox, joins Oscar Ramirez for the new sober-ish.   Next, almost everyone has a Disney adult in their life. These superfans live and breathe the company's aesthetic, spending lots of time and money at the theme parks and buying its merchandis. Protests overtook the country once again as the Supreme Court ruled to strike down Roe v. Wade.  Pro-abortion advocates were enraged and anti-abortion advocates cheered the decision.  Trigger laws set to be enacted if Roe was struck down took effect in some states and quickly limited women's access in those areas.  The focus now turns political as President Biden called on people to vote in elected officials that would do something about it.  Ginger Gibson, deputy Washington digital editor at NBC News, joins us for all the fallout and what this decision says about the politicization of the Supreme Court. Next, we'll tell you how the “Disney adult” became one of the most hated groups on the internet.  Everyone knows a Disney adult, someone who loves the parks and spends insane amounts of money on vacations, getting the latest merch, or limited-edition pins and Mickey ears.  These Disney superfans have been around for a long time, but the term is relatively new and the anti-Disney adult sentiment really took hold during the pandemic as fans were mourning the closures of the parks and online groups were just having none of that.  EJ Dickson, senior writer at Rolling Stone, joins us for more on the adult Disney fandom. This week, we take a look at the latest celebrity trial to ensnare the national attention. Johnny Depp is suing Amber Heard, his ex-wife, for defamation, and she's counter suing him for the same. Depp's suit takes issue with an op-ed Heard wrote back in 2018 for the Washington Post in which she identifies herself as a survivor of domestic violence. She first came forward with allegations against Depp in 2016. In 2018, Depp sued British tabloid, The Sun, for defamation over headlines that accused him of abuse, but he lost that case. Given the history, you might expect to see fewer headlines over this latest trial. But, not so. The ratings for Court TV, which is broadcasting every moment of the trial, have more than doubled. Pair the live visuals with Depp's rabid online fanbase, and you've got a case being watched billions of times over — in fact, the #JusticeforJohnnyDepp hashtag has upwards of 10 billion views on TikTok and it's spawned several viral sounds and trends and … comedy sketches. Guest host Brandy Zadrozny asks EJ Dickson, senior writer for Rolling Stone, about how pro-Depp coverage of the case took over TikTok, and its consequences.

Hi everyone! Mogab was sick this week, and so unfortunately we do not have a new episode for you all.  We did not want to leave you hanging, though, so we decided it was a great time to re-release our episode on Anna Delvey! This week, Kristin tells Mogab the story of Anna Delvy - one of the greatest con artists of our generation, which is saying a lot since Millennials can claim both Billy McFarland from Fyre Fest and Elizabeth Holmes from Theranos. Everyone loves a good scam story. And this is definitely a good scam story. So good, in fact, that Shonda Rhimes is making a show with Netflix about Anna Delvy: the German heiress trying to open her Center for Kids Who Can't Read Good (or something like that...). She lives in New York's fanciest hotels, is at all the best parties, and loves to tip big and take lavish trips with her friends. But weird things keep happening: her credit cards keep getting declined, or she's having trouble tapping into her trust fund, so her friends start covering for her. Only, she's not a German heiress. And she doesn't actually have any money. So how did she manage to con all her friends Into funding this lifestyle she wanted so badly? I want to point people towards the National Center for Victims of Crime, who have a Financial Crime Resource Center. They wanted to provide a resource for victim-centered services in the area of financial fraud and so they produce a guide calledTaking Action: An Advocate's Guide to Assisting Victims of Financial FraudThis guide is designed to provide advocates with practical victim-centered resources to help navigate the various options available for reporting crimes, protecting other assets and preventing re-victimization. It also offers advice on how to assist with psychological and – where possible – financial recovery.Sources: “How Anna Delvy Tricked New York” by Jessica Pressler, printed in New York Magazine“My Misadventures with the Magician of Manhattan” by Rachel Deloache Williams, printed in Vanity Fair“Who Is Anna Sorokin, a.k.a. No sound has captured our For You Page — and, dare we say it, the soul of an entire generation — quite like Julia Fox saying "Uncut Jahhhhhhmz." Fox has gone viral not for her relationship with her now-ex paramour Kanye West, but for her role as Josh Safdie's self-described muse in Uncut Gems (or is it Uncah Jahhhms?), and the interview has got our FYPs in a chokehold. Also discussed on this ep: why poly couples make such cringe TikTok content, a Himbo of the Week who claims to spend $2000 a month on Voss alone, and a definitive ranking of bottled water. For the past two weeks, Kanye West has constantly been posting on his previously dormant Instagram, aggressively campaigning to get his ex-wife Kim Kardashian back. Some of this behavior, such as referring to her current boyfriend Pete Davidson as "Skete" or posting Marvel Civil War memes, has been absurdly comical — but much of it has arguably crossed the line into public harassment, with Kanye most recently ranting about their daughter North's TikTok and posting Kim's messages pleading with him to stop. To help explain what's been going on with Kim and Kanye, we enlisted resident TikTok Kardashians expert @Kardashian.Kolloquium to shed some light on the situation. We also talk about the Tinder Swindler (and whether or not we'd swipe right), a New York magazine piece about fraudster Danielle Miller, and crown a special Valentine's Day-themed Himbo of the Week.  Don't Let This Flop is a weekly podcast from Rolling Stone, centered around a roundup of this week in TikTok trends and memes, from dances to recipes to makeup challenges to creepy viral videos to celebrity videos to grassroots campaigns intended to raise awareness of social issues. This week on Don't Let This Flop, cohosts Brittany Spanos and Ej Dickson spoke to the TikTok voice behind the DuoLingo owl itself, Zaria Parvez, the social media coordinator for DuoLingo, asking such burning questions as how brands can thrive on TikTok, whether she's ever gotten in trouble for making the owl too horny, and if the DuoLingo owl has ever taken a human life (she claims it has not.) Other subjects discussed this week are the Italian band Mäneskin, which went viral after winning the Eurovision competition earlier this year; conspiracy theories about Selena Gomez and Chris Evans boinking based on his Instagram stories; hot movers, and Mr. Peanut's butt. Don't Let This Flop is a weekly podcast from Rolling Stone, centered around a roundup of this week in TikTok trends and memes, from dances to recipes to makeup challenges to creepy viral videos to celebrity videos to grassroots campaigns intended to raise awareness of social issues. What was really going on when Lauren visited her boyfriend Robbie at college, surprising him as he sat on a couch with three girls? It turned into TikTok's hottest clip, of course, with millions of fans picking apart whether the 20-second clip was definitive proof of Robbie cheating. After watching roughly 6,000 response videos breaking down theories, we talked to actual body language expert Traci Brown, who reveals which people in the TikTok you should be paying attention to — and it's not Lauren or Robbie. “Something is going on more than what we know,” Brown tells Rolling Stone. This week we also bring you a look at what makes Emily Mariko's leftover salmon videos so appealing, and a special double-Himbo of the Week.   Don't Let This Flop is a weekly podcast from Rolling Stone, centered around a roundup of this week in TikTok trends and memes, from dances to recipes to makeup challenges to creepy viral videos to celebrity videos to grassroots campaigns intended to raise awareness of social issues. Ailish discusses how a 23-year-old who couldn't survive off her salary as a medical worker created an OnlyFans account to get by and the conversation a New York Post article, which exposed her, has created. Why is the focus on shaming her for sex work instead of the fact that a medical professional has to work three jobs to get by? This Rolling Stones article by EJ Dickson summarises our thoughts well. Bella deep dives into Joseph Epstein's Washington Post opinion piece regarding Jill Biden dropping the honorific. It's a mess - let's unpack it. She references this delightful clapback by Monica Hesse. Wash away the first read with this one. And Nicolette ends the conversation with a chat regarding influencer businesses. Do they need to bring something more to the table than just another fashion label with minimal sizing, representation and originality? We think yes. Happy Thanksgiving to all our American friends! They wanted to provide a resource for victim-centered services in the area of financial fraud and so they produce a guide calledTaking Action: An Advocate’s Guide to Assisting Victims of Financial FraudThis guide is designed to provide advocates with practical victim-centered resources to help navigate the various options available for reporting crimes, protecting other assets and preventing re-victimization. It also offers advice on how to assist with psychological and – where possible – financial recovery.Sources: “How Anna Delvy Tricked New York” by Jessica Presster, printed in New York Magazine“My Misadventures with the Magician of Manhattan” by Rachel Deloache Williams, printed in Vanity Fair“Who Is Anna Sorokin, a.k.a. In 1998, a group of white men with a history of racist sentiments seek out trouble and find a local black man, whom they tortured and killed by dragging him along a lonely country road in backwoods east Texas, where the scars of slavery days were still quite fresh.Featuring Amanda from The State of Perfect Balance podcasthttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-state-of-perfect-balance-a-true-crime-podcast/id1437727704Written by David Wayne YoungResearched by Kat Morris“Grass Crown” by Hyperchromatichttps://soundcloud.com/chromatic-1/grass-crown-2Thorns and Leaves EPhttps://hyperchromatic.bandcamp.com/album/thorns-and-leavesSOURCES:A Death in Texas: A Story of Race, Murder, and a Small Town’s Struggle for Redemption by Dina Temple- RastonWade Goodwyn of NPRhttps://www.npr.org/2019/04/24/716647585/texas-to-execute-man-convicted-in-dragging-death-of-james-byrd-jr BIOGRAPHY.COMhttps://www.biography.com/crime-figure/james-byrd-jr The New York Times, Various Issueshttps://www.nytimes.com/topic/person/james-byrd-jr Shane Croucher of Newsweekhttps://www.newsweek.com/james-byrd-jr-lynching-texas-death-row-execution-1394474 Eli Rosenberg and Lindsey Bever of the Washington Posthttps://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/04/25/james-byrd-jr-killer-john-william-king-executed-texas-hate-crime/ Elliott McLaughlin of CNNhttps://www.cnn.com/2019/04/24/us/james-byrd-killer-execution-john-william-king/index.html David K. In Episode 7, we interview cam model Ginger Banks (@gingerbanks1) and journalist EJ Dickson (@ejdickson) about the sexual assault allegations leveled against Ron Jeremy.  These allegations are nothing new, but what is new is the attention that they are now garnering and so what we explore in this episode is what has changed in the industry and in society writ large so that these allegations are finally getting attention. Importantly, we see the stakes of this story as being much bigger than Jeremy’s reputation. We are focusing on this story because it speaks to a much broader question of whose allegations of sexual assault are believed or even heard. As background to the episode: Ginger Banks put together the following YouTube video, which chronicles the story: Allegations of Sexual Assault Against Ron Jeremy and Exxxotica's Resonse Jessie Sage wrote a short blog reflecting on the story as a spectator and Chicago’s Exxxotica: Ron Jeremy, Exxxotica, and Twitter as a Form of Resistance EJ Dickson wrote a piece for Rolling Stone about Ron Jeremy: Inside Ron Jeremy Sexual Misconduct Allegations We end this special edition of the Peepshow Podcast by reflecting on the fact that the experiences that so many women in and around the adult industry describe of being sexual violated cannot be blamed on one bad apple. Responsibility also belongs to a society that creates conditions for pervasive sexual assault by dismissing women and stigmatizing sex workers.
