This episode is a re-release; it originally aired November 29, 2015. Women's rights activist and international humanitarian Zainab Salbi discusses her dedication to helping women in war-torn regions rebuild their lives. An Iraqi-American, Zainab talks about growing up in Saddam Hussein's inner circle, leading a life of privilege and luxury but also one of fear and terror. When she was 19 years old, Zainab left Iraq for an arranged marriage in the United States, which turned out to be abusive, forcing her to leave the marriage and start a new life. She later founded Women for Women International, a grassroots humanitarian and development organization dedicated to serving female survivors of war. Zainab talks about following her calling and what she's learned about humanity through her advocacy work. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Marie "Lootie" Leautey – Solo, Unsupported & Fastest Woman to Run Around the World

Tough Girl Podcast

In this episode of the Tough Girl Podcast, we're joined by Marie "Lootie" Leautey, the second woman in history to run around the world solo and unsupported — and the fastest woman to do it. Lootie's journey began in France, far from the running world. A former smoker and corporate finance professional, she swapped cigarettes for daily runs at 25, building up to her first marathon in just eight months. That spark turned into an audacious dream: to run across the globe — 26,000+ km, across four continents, relying entirely on herself. Starting her run in Europe in December 2019, Lootie faced deserts, mountains, and long stretches between resupply points, carrying only a 12–15kg stroller packed with her essentials. Along the way, she experienced the kindness of strangers, the thrill of new cultures, and the incredible mental discipline required to run a marathon every day for years. Beyond the physical feat, Lootie shares how her journey is rooted in purpose: raising funds for Women for Women International, honouring her grandmother's legacy, and inspiring women to ask themselves, "Why am I doing this, and is it aligned with who I want to be?" This is a story of grit, adventure, and the extraordinary power of chasing your own path — a reminder that there's very little you can't achieve once you set your mind to it. ***  New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! Make sure to subscribe so you never miss the inspiring journeys and incredible stories of tough women pushing boundaries.  Do you want to support the Tough Girl Mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media in the world of adventure and physical challenges? Support via Patreon! "1% for the planet…the way it works is that we have businesses who are our members, and they're actually supporting environmental partners at the level of 1% of revenues….You invest in the things that matter and the planet matters.…(to) drive impact at scale. And so, in terms of that scale, last year we certified US$100million of support going from these companies to environmental partners….When a company joins, they pay a dues fee to us, but then the rest of their 1%, they will give directly to environmental partners….And then at the end of each year, we certify that giving." ate Williams on Electric Ladies Podcast This time of year we are likely making donations, but this episode is about a creative way to make a bigger difference – and all year long with the normal stuff you buy. One is, step forward and step up before you think you might be ready.… Becoming a CEO or C-suite can be one way that you progress, but you can also just become really deeply knowledgeable in a particular area.… Sometimes as women and just as humans, we can maybe hold ourselves back. So, I would say like, step up before you're ready.…(S)upport appears when once I've taken the step….The other thing is stay open to serendipity…We may forget that serendipity is sometimes how the opportunities that we get to step into are shown to us…. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Lya Badgley, author of the book The Worth of a Ruby. Lya was born in Yangon, Myanmar. The child of Montana parents – a political scientist and an artist – she grew up in a household that encouraged critical thinking and creativity. After dabbling in retail management, Lya moved to the Pacific Northwest in the eighties, becoming a part of the Seattle arts and music scene. In the nineties, after a decade of life as a struggling poet/ musician, she returned to Southeast Asia as a videographer on a clandestine expedition interviewing Burmese insurgents. A year later, she was working as director of Cornell University's Archival Project, microfilming documents at Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide in Cambodia, helping to bring war criminals to justice. Finishing that, she managed the first foreign-owned project of its kind for the time, opening the 50th Street Bar & Grill Restaurant in Yangon, Myanmar. Since then, Lya has been an elected city council member and a dedicated environmental activist. She is a member of the Women's Fiction Writers Association, the Pacific Northwest Writers Association, and Hugo House. Her first self-published novel, The Foreigner's Confession, was released to good reviews in February of 2022. Her second novel, The Worth of a Ruby, launched November 2023. Badgley lives in Snohomish, Washington, and is working on her third novel set in Bosnia. In my book review, I stated that I thoroughly enjoyed Lya's first novel, The Foreigner's Confession, and was super excited to get my hands on this one, The Worth of a Ruby, set in Burma. Badgley writes edgy international crime/suspense and gets the reader into the mind of her characters. Mallory Jones, a chef, like the author, wanted to open a restaurant in Burma but not because she was in love with the area. Instead, she was running from her past. However, as is wont when folks try to escape their past by running from it, the past found a way to erupt. As plans for a restaurant fall through, we see a side of Mallory that isn't evident in the beginning. The Worth of a Ruby has it all: great characters, amazing backdrop, kidnapping, blackmail, murder, and a bit of Burmese magic. Plus, in the words of the author, " I like ambiguous endings." Don't miss this book! Acting Business Boot Camp

What do you get your reps for the holidays, especially this year? Because it is this year, the year of two strikes, after, let's see, a global pandemic, and a heck of a lot of other things going on in the world, I think we can be assured that it doesn't have to be some momentous gift. So let's say you had a Killer year, maybe in theatrical at the beginning of the year, or you had a killer print year, or a killer modeling year, or a killer commercial or voiceover year, again Wahoo! I want to hear about it because that sounds fabulous. If you did, you can be more generous in what I'm going to suggest. This year, I would go for a card. A card that says something sincere in it about how much you appreciate them sticking by you or how much you appreciate their sense of humor or something genuine. Now, that is if it is a very lean year for you. If it's not been a lean year and you really want to do a little something, I go to my old standard of Amazon gift cards and Starbucks gift cards. I know that's not that imaginative, but honestly, from the casting director's point of view, it's just a token. If you want to take it one step further, then do a little investigating. When you were there, What were they eating? Was it Chipotle? Was it Sweetgreen? Was it McDonald's? Whatever it was, they have a little thing. Maybe you know that they love VR games. If they do, then get them a gift card that's appropriate for that. If you know they love going to movies, get them a movie gift card to a movie theater near their work or their home. You can be imaginative with this. The other thing I recommend is A charity. You can say, listen, in light of this being a crappy year for a lot of people, I wanted to give a little donation to a charity of your choice. Ask them. ASPCA and Women for Women International are the two charities of Acting Business Boot Camp. We give a portion of our proceeds every month to those two charities.  Broadway Cares, Equity Fights AIDS, that's always a great one for the industry. The Actors Fund is another charity that's fantastic for the industry. You can do stuff like that, too. I always feel these things are better than alcohol or cookies because then they get to choose and they get to have something that's special for them. And I also love those gifts where somebody gave it a little more thought. Do some homework on this. Think about it. What would your reps really like? And honestly, if it's just a card with something nice, that's perfect. Just take that moment. Stop and take that moment and think about what you most appreciate them. Thank you for noticing me. Thank you for seeing me, seeing my talent, and believing in me.

Green Connections Radio - Women Who Innovate With Purpose, & Career Issues, Including in Energy, Sustainability, Responsibil

“Philanthropy generally, we consider, contributing private money for public good or community good. And climate philanthropy is simply, when we are making those private contributions in ways that are going to address the climate crisis that our country and that the world is facing today. I would expand that slightly by saying that one of the trends that I'm seeing is a real interlinking of climate and nature problems and climate and nature solutions.”  Heather Grady on Electric Ladies Podcast Philanthropy is being reinvented today, including what is now called “climate philanthropy.” It's in part about considering the solutions nature can provide to the climate crisis, instead of just relying on new technologies.  They each have a singular purpose as well as a role in the bigger vision, and require accountability   Listen to Heather Grady, Vice President and Practice Lead for Environment and Climate at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, explain how they are leveraging philanthropy to help avert climate catastrophes in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies podcast host Joan Michelson.   You'll hear: What climate philanthropy is and how it works – and how they view “risk.” How they are leveraging the new federal funding, including the Inflation Reduction Act. What they think of the oil companies, ESG (environment, social, governance) and other hot topics. Which areas Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors focuses on and why Plus, insightful career advice …. “When women are clear that they do want to make a difference, that they want a job with purpose, that's a good thing to put in your cover letter and express on your cv. There are people who haven't worked on mission-driven organizations or companies yet. But if you've spent time, say, doing a lot of volunteer work in your community, whether it's climate or children's rights or whatever it may be, make sure that you're emphasizing that when you're applying for positions. We are really looking in my organization, and I see this increasingly, people are looking for new employees who are values-aligned and values aware.” Heather Grady on Electric Ladies podcast You'll also want to listen to: Justin Winter, Cofounder, One Earth, on “philanthro-activism”. The soul's liberation of realizing “I am” was amongst my first learnings from Zainab Salbi. A world renowned humanitarian, Zainab founded Women for Women International when she was 23 and dedicated decades to offering both human connection and $146 million of aid to over 400,000 women survivors of war and conflict. Her inner journey is equally inspiring and I was most excited to hear her answer to that ultimate question: Who am I? This experience of ‘descending all of her knowledge to her heart' revealed that our hearts have a language—One she can only learn through emptiness. “There's no value of emptiness. Yet, it is only when I go to emptiness that I can feel the divine,” she says. “It may not be spiritual for everyone. Though, for me, that is the path of my joy and freedom because I go to the place where all the space is. It's joy for no reason and all reasons. Love for all, no matter who. It is only when I arrive at emptiness that I can go to that vastness of emotions.” Zainab graciously explores her path of self-discovery—From the freedom of sharing the truth that imprisoned her from childhood to her evolving spiritual path and learning that “life regenerates itself like Earth,” which she's honoring with Daughters for Earth: A non-profit she co-founded to fund women and girls securing the health of our planet. While our conversation is woven with wide-ranging insights, she threads it with a single invitation: To honor the life we've been given.

Today LIsa Dettmer will pay tribute to Jewish lesbian feminist writer and activist Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz who died way too soon in at 72 in 2018 and who was a personal shero of mine and who I have been remiss in celebrating on this show. Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz was a very important activist and writer, who made multiple theoretical contributions to understanding Judaism, lesbianism, and feminism as intersectional identities, extended an awareness of class and economic justice through a Jewish lens, and made visible racial differences within Jewish communities. Kaye/Kantrowitz was the founding executive director of Jews For Racial and Economic Justice and advocated Radical Diasporism as a progressive alternative to Zionism. First we will hear a reading by Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz from her last book “The color of jews: Racial Politics and Radical Diasporism” . and then I will talk Melanie's long time partner Leslie Cagan who is herself a long time lesbian feminist activist in peace and social justice movements and who was a chair of Pacifica Radio at one time as well. In the second half-hour, producer Chana Wilson speaks with along-time International Women's Rights activist and author. In 1993, Zainab founded Women for Women International, a foundation that supports women survivors of war and conflict. Then a year ago, she co-founded “Daughters for Earth.” Daughters for Earth provides resources to women around the world doing nature conservation, restoration, and regenerative agriculture projects that are contributing to solving the climate crisis. In the year since its founding, Daughters for Earth has funded 50 women-powered projects to protect and restore the earth. These projects span the globe, with projects in India, Africa, the Arctic, South America, Asia, the Middle East and the United States. Women and girls make up a disproportionate amount of the 1.2 billion people who live in extreme poverty around the world. Our guests today are working in Rwanda and in cities around the world to create opportunities for women that lead to economic independence. Since 2007, Bloomberg Philanthropies' Women's Economic Development Initiative, led by Verna Eggleston, has focused on developing women's skills to help them master income-generating activities.More than 724,000 women and their families have enrolled in training and education programs directly benefiting over 2.8 million of their children through access to health insurance, education beyond primary school, increased savings, and much, much more. This summer, an independent third party evaluation conducted and published by the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies showed how effective and replicable the program is. In this episode, Katherine Oliver sits down with Verna Eggleston, who leads Bloomberg Philanthropies' Women's Economic Development Initiative, Laurie Adams, the CEO of Women for Women International, and Christine Condo, the Executive Director of Sustainable Growers. They discuss how the program affects women, their communities, and their children and families, key findings of the Johns Hopkins report, and how listeners can get involved.

“We're in this moment right now where we have a very short window to drive the type of transformative change that's necessary to solve a climate crisis. And we believe at One Earth that philanthropy can play a really, really critical role in actually making this transformation possible….But less than 2% of all philanthropic capital goes to climate and environment issues, and just a fraction of that actually reaches efforts on the ground efforts” Justin Winters on Electric Ladies Podcast We think it's hot where we are, but emerging and rural areas have it much worse. One strategy to help them is now called “philanthro-activism.” What is it ? Enter One Earth, a new kind of philanthropic organization, run by women who believe that the people on the ground know best what will help their communities and save the planet. Listen to Justin Winters, Executive Director and Cofounder of One Earth – and former head of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation – explain how they are pooling the resources of both some of the world's richest people and normal people like you and me to help the most diligent, creative people doing the real work every day to avert climate catastrophes in their areas in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies podcast host Joan Michelson.   You'll hear: What Philanthro-activism is and why they coined the term. How they developed this creative business model – and what Winter learned at DiCaprio's Foundation. Stories of people on the ground who One Earth is supporting and why Which areas of the economy One Earth focuses on and why (such as food security) Plus, insightful career advice …. “I would put purpose at the center, and service because we're in a moment where it really is being ambitious. Doesn't have to be tied to resources, right? Being ambitious can be about the type of change that you want to drive in the world..” Justin Winters on Electric Ladies podcast You'll also want to listen to: Zainab Salbi, Cofounder of Daughters for Earth, one of the partners in One Earth – and Founder of Women to Women International and its former CEO Rosemary Atieno, Women Climate Centers International – on how they are helping women in rural Kenya grow their economies and address climate change at the same time. Natalie Jaresko, former finance minister of Ukraine – on the hidden power of ESG Kerry Bannigan, CEO of Fashion Impact Fund and Conscious Fashion Campaign – including reaching women in rural areas across the fashion industry supply chain ·       Sandrine Dixson, Co-president of the Club of Rome (global leaders) – on the need for a new economic model that puts people and planet ahead of profit. On today's episode of HERO, the last show of the season, we look at how a Women for Women International program in the Democratic Republic of Congo worked with families to try to overcome longstanding cultural barriers to women owning land. We hear from a mother, father, and son who participated in this program. Also, Women for Women International's country director in the DRC, Rachel Boketa, explains how this project attempted to change men's and boy's opinions about female property ownership. Special thanks to Francis Shok Mweze, who acted as our field producer for this segment.   Boketa's program was supported with a grant from the United States Agency for International Development, or USAID. The U.S. currently gives more money to international development than any other country in the world, largely through USAID. In the second part of the episode, host Reena Ninan talks to Isobel Coleman, the deputy administrator of USAID. Coleman explains why the Biden administration is doubling funding towards gender programming and how USAID plans to invest that financing. This conversation first took place at Foreign Policy's Her Power Summit, an annual gathering all about women's leadership.  Finally, we are conducting a listener survey to better understand what you like about the podcast and what else you'd like to hear in future episodes. We live in a world where there's so much focus on matrix, statistics, and data, and while these are all important, they do not hold the soul of the mission and the vision. They are not the reason for growth or prosperity, but points of information. Zainab believes that a person has to keep their integrity towards the soul of the mission or the vision. Feminine leadership is putting as much importance to the actual mind in the facts as much as to the heart's knowledge, for the heart has wisdom, knowledge, and intelligence. If we run organizations only using our minds, it becomes broken, disconnected, and unsustainable. Zainab Salbi has frequently been named as one of the women changing the world by leading publications ranging from Newsweek to The Guardian. Oprah Winfrey identified her as one of the women changing the world to People Magazine and President Bill Clinton identified her as one of the 21st century heroes to Harper's Bazaar. Most recently Foreign Policy Magazine named her as one of “100 Leading Global Thinkers” and Watkins Magazine identified her as one of the top 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People in 2020.At the age of 23, Zainab founded Women for Women International, a humanitarian organization dedicated to women survivors of wars. Under her leadership (1993–2011), Women for Women International grew from helping 30 women upon its inception to helping more than 420,000 women and distributing more than 100 million dollars in aid. Zainab is the author of several books, including the best seller Between Two Worlds: Escape from Tyranny; Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam (with Laurie Buckland); The Other Side of War; Women's Stories of Survival and Hope; If You Knew Me You Would Care,(with photographs by Rennio Maifredi); and her latest Freedom is an Inside Job; Owning our Darkness and Our Light to Change Ourselves and the World. She is also the Executive Editor and Host of several shows including Through Her Eyes with Yahoo News, #MeToo, Now What? with PBS, The Zainab Salbi Project with Huffington Post , and The Nida'a Show with TLC Arabia. In early 2022, alongside Jody Allen, Zainab co-founded Daughters for Earth, a new fund and campaign that aims to inspire all women to engage in climate change action by mobilizing $100 million for on the ground, women-led efforts to protect and restore the Earth. President Biden was in Kentucky today, touting last year's massive infrastructure bill alongside Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. It's that kind of bipartisanship that's necessary to support the defense of democracy in Ukraine, whose foreign minister said today that preparations are underway to receive America's Patriot air defense systems. This after Washington pledged another $45 billion in emergency assistance over the holidays. Every day that aid becomes more critical, as President Zelensky says Russia is digging in for the long haul – including with the bombing of cities and crucial infrastructure. “The fashion industry is a supply chain….but the reality is it's a human chain. Nothing is made that we wear that does not go through many human hands. And so really for me, the environmental aspects are extremely important. But.. it's really about brands being more open about their supply chain. And, specifically, when there is a red flag to be concerned about in someone that they've worked with, they need to let their peers in the space know, so that they are no longer ordering from that place. And instead, take their orders and their finances to factories that are doing it right…The environment that people are working in, for example, and then how their pay is and their education and how they're looked after.” Kerry Bannigan on Electric Ladies Podcast As holiday shopping 2022 kicks off with this Thanksgiving week, in this interview, Kerry Bannigan, CEO and Founder of the Conscious Fashion Campaign and Fashion Impact Fund, reminds us to shop sustainably, especially if you're buying clothes. There are a range of new sustainable fabrics, organic fabrics with nontoxic dyes and cool stuff made from recycled materials (someone sent me shirts made from recycled water bottles!). Listen to Kerry explain how the fashion industry is evolving (or not) to meet this moment when sustainability and social responsibility are taking a spot on the runway, in this powerful interview on Electric Ladies Podcast with host Joan Michelson. You'll hear: How the fashion industry really works and prioritizes. Why fashion consumers are demanding more sustainable fashion and corporate responsibility – on the part of all players in the fashion world. What the fashion industry needs to do now to evolve to meet the moment and ESG reporting requirements. How really bad “fast fashion” really is for the environment and the workers, and what you can do with your clothing dollars. Plus, great career advice....including… “First of all, it's, and it's just a question I spot with myself often is 'am I happy?' What would make me happy? Drown out the noise. And it doesn't matter how crazy it sounds. It's just do it…. I think it's about researching what's out there, finding out, if you can sit in on events… There is so much out there and there is so much to learn and you shouldn't have to do it by leaving one thing which is seen as your secure paycheck...You shouldn't have to jump that to something else, to be able to try it. Have you heard of a female-focused approach to healing?    It's no secret that women see the world and react to the world differently than men do. We know it instinctively. That being said, doesn't it make sense that women need a different approach to healing?    In today's episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I sat down with Bree Stedman to talk about how we can approach healing as women with our differences from men in mind for a much deeper, and more effective result.   Bree Stedman is a Transformational Women's Coach and the spokesperson and trainer for the Institute of Women International. She is passionate about redefining female empowerment by giving women the confidence to be seen and heard in business and in life through epigenetic, female-specific healing.   Many of us end up stuck in patterns because the things we are trying just aren't working, but it doesn't have to be that way. As women, we are innately different than men, so we need different approaches to healing emotionally and physically. Bree embraces that in her work and is passionate about working with women who are absolutely committed, ready, and determined to change.    Tune in to learn more about how women and men are different, healing the conscious and unconscious, and so much more.    Show notes available at www.drerinkinney.com/88   Resources Mentioned:  Visit Bree's website: www.breestedman.com Follow Bree on Facebook: www.facebook.com/breestedman Follow Bree on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/breestedman/   I would love to connect on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrKinneyND I would love to connect on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drkinney

Today's wonderful guest is Cameron Rogers! Cam has built her career advising high net-worth clients on professional investing and wealth management, and recently made the decision to invest in her future through egg freezing. First off, she shares her thought process behind her choice and the social components that she has faced as a single, career-minded woman. She explains the emotional, physical, and financial investment that fertility preservation requires and talks about how meaningful community was during the process. PS - this is a great episode to listen to if, like me, you have ever felt pressure from others to start a family!   [04:32] About Cam Rogers and her process leading up to freezing her eggs. [16:12] Cultural pressures related to dating, career success and other life choices. [19:49] Cameron's egg freezing experience. [24:33] Julia's experience with freezing her eggs. [26:20] The emotional and financial components of egg freezing. [39:00] What does family mean to Cam?   KEY TAKEAWAYS:   Egg freezing is a physical, financial, and emotional investment in a possible future – one that isn't even defined or a promised future. Women often experience hurtful societal pressures from family and friends to be in a relationship or start a family by a certain age. This pressure is usually compounded by a woman's own personal desires for a family which can make egg freezing deeply personal and isolating. In Cameron's experience, she was privileged to have felt and found a supportive community during the process. In a perfect world, every young woman in her early twenties would start saving for egg freezing. In a more perfect world, we wouldn't have to because insurance programs would cover it.    Resources:   @camrogers33   https://www.ellevest.com/private-wealth-management/how-were-different   https://instagram.com/ellevest   BIO:   Cameron has built her career advising both high net worth individuals and some of the country's largest institutional investors. At Ellevest, she advises clients around matters including generational transitions of wealth, investing for financial and social impact, and institutional investment strategy. She has more than a decade of professional investing and wealth management experience, most recently at J.P. Morgan. Cameron has degrees in finance and international business from Georgetown University, and is a CFA charterholder. She is a board member for the Beyond Sport Foundation, an organization that celebrates, supports, and provides funding for organizations using sport to help make the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) a reality.
