An emerging trend in the car collector world features vehicles reimagined by builders who bring famous marques into the 21st century including Mustang, Camaro, Shelby Cobra, Porsche 911, Broncos, Toyota Land Cruisers and others. Instead of building them exactly like they were in the 60s and 70s, these classic beauties have been given entirely new underpinnings. The chassis, drivetrains, engines (gas or electric), brakes and interior features make them faster, safer and easier to drive than the originals. Mark Greene, Founder of the Cars Yeah podcast, visits to talk about why this movement is becoming popular.

Mark Greene: Mansplaining

Critically Speaking

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 17, 2024 52:38

In this episode, Therese Markow and Mark Greene discuss the pervasive issue of mansplaining, a phenomenon where men explain things to women despite their lesser expertise. Mark explains that mansplaining is rooted in "Man Box Culture," a set of rigid masculine rules that discourage emotional expression and promote dominance. He highlights that these rules, which include not showing emotions and being a breadwinner, have been ingrained since the Industrial Revolution and are still prevalent today. Mark emphasizes the need for men to unlearn these behaviors to form meaningful connections and improve their mental health. He also discusses the impact of these cultural norms on men's professional and personal lives, advocating for a shift towards more inclusive and emotionally open masculinity.    Key Takeaways: No culture is monolithic. No culture is non-changeable.  Mansplaining is one direct product of a culture of masculinity that says: Don't show your emotions. Always be tough, be right, know more.. Never talk about anything deep. Man Box Culture is not traditional masculinity The breaking of connection is what leads to Man Box Culture and the increased rates of suicide in teenage boys and mental health challenges in adult men. Authentic, deep, caring relationships require emotional sharing. If you spend your life mansplaining, you don't have connection.   "My work is around the idea that we want to get men to wake up to the limitations of Man Box Culture and shift that culture to a healthier culture of expression and connection." —  Mark Greene   Episode References:  Men Explain Things to Me by Rebecca Solnit: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1608464660  The Man Box Study by Equimundo: https://www.equimundo.org/resources/man-box-study-young-man-us-uk-mexico/  When Boys Become Boys by Judy Chu: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0814764800  Niobe Way: https://www.niobe-way.com/  Catalyst: How Combative Cultures Prevent Men from Interrupting Sexism: https://www.catalyst.org/research/combative-culture-sexism-infographic/  The Good Men Project: https://goodmenproject.com/    Connect with Mark Greene: Website: https://remakingmanhood.com/  Twitter: https://x.com/remakingmanhood  Book: The Little #MeToo Book for Me: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0983466963  Book: The Relational Book for Parenting: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1979378657  Remaking Manhood Podcast: https://remakingmanhood.com/2019/04/01/the-podcast/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mrkgreene/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/remakingmanhood/    Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Evolved Caveman
Episode 1: Why Masculinity Is Now A Central Theme In Politics

Evolved Caveman

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 9, 2024 61:44

Millions of men are tired of the way in which MAGA Republicans have defined masculinity in the traditional, restrictive fashion - emphasizing the “hard” side of men and shaming the “soft” side. This includes prioritizing independence over interdependence, thinking over feeling, autonomy over connection, and emotional suppression over vulnerability.  The old view is “power over” others rather than “power with”. The old view is to exert control over women which is demonstrated by MAGA's views on abortion and birth control. The solution is not to prioritize the hard side of masculinity over the soft side. Nor is it to prioritize the soft side over the hard side. The solution is to create a climate which values all sides of masculinity (or even better, humanity!), so that we may bring the best aspects of ourselves to any situation as needed. The solution is to stop shaming men when they feel natural, healthy human emotions (think of how Gus Walz was treated when he displayed love, connection and pride over his father at the DNC). What is the Man Box?  It's the rules you absorbed as a boy about what it means to be a “real man”; rules that have made you emotionally constipated, caused conflict in your romantic relationship, encouraged you to chase material things, and caught up in a hyper-competitive rat race. The rules include such classics as be tough, hide your feelings, dominate women, be self-reliant, don't be feminine, and don't be homosexual. Research shows that this restrictive, tired view of masculinity has negative effects on us. The more we subscribe to traditional Man Box beliefs, the lower our self-esteem (Cournoyer & Mahalik, 1995), the more difficulties we have in romantic relationships and friendships (Fischer & Good, 1997; Sharpe & Heppner, 1991), the more we act in violence (Franchina, Eisler, & Moore, 2001), and the more depressed and anxious we feel (Cournoyer & Mahalik, 1995; Hayes & Mahalik, 2000).Join Dr. John Schinnerer and Mark Greene in a fascinating conversation about the Man Box culture, and how it's playing out in politics right now. The solution is not to flip the script so that we overvalue the soft aspects of men over the harder aspects.  The goal is to honor both the hard and the soft sides of our humanity equally. It's giving men permission to tap into all aspects of their humanity so that they are comfortable bringing the best parts of themselves to a particular situation. This is not a problem at an individual level. It is a cultural issue, a culture in which the full spectrum of our humanity has yet to be valued fully. The thing I love about the Man Box idea is that none of this is your fault. You didn't ask to be socialized like this. You had no control over it. It just happens. So keep in mind that while this is not your fault, it is your responsibility to evolve beyond the Man Box. And that's what we are seeking to do in this election, discover more ways to evolve our masculinity.About Dr. John's Esteemed Guest, Mark Greene:Mark Greene works to engage men in creating diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace cultures. Feeling challenged in more than one way, I'm recommending the 2022 movie Close as one of the best films in years. It directly reminded me of a past Inappropriate Conversations podcast with Mark Greene as the Different Drummer. His work, and the director of Close, directly refer to this episode's Different Drummer, too.  I was reminded of my childhood, at the same age as the central characters in the film, and a sense of disconnection that came from a change in school districts. I also was challenged by how our defense mechanisms seem to presume something inappropriate (directly or indirectly incestuous) might make an unwanted appearance in the plot of a film like this. I don't blame the filmmakers. It's more the way our society is driven to sexualize, seemingly, everything, even when nothing of the sort is going on.  Different Drummer: Niobi Way The Project for the Advancement of our Common Humanity
