And here's the thing: people pleasing started early on as a child, can get worse in adolescence when we're fighting for that need to belong, and can way out of control if we let it linger too long in adulthood. While for so many of us, it's what we rely on best to survive; the more time goes on, the greater this pattern takes shape in your life and takes you further and further away from developing a relationship with yourself. For many of us, people-pleasing is such an ingrained pattern that we don't even realize we're doing it. But in order to break up with people pleasing, you have to first get honest with yourself as to how you've been choosing this. Listen in on the 4 reflections I have about what people pleasing actually creates and how to move away from it - one step at a time.

Wanting so badly to marry the two loves of global women's empowerment work with coaching, I kept plugging away at wanting to curate spaces for honest, authentic conversations around confidence and leadership. Fast forward to today, where I share with you what the last week has felt leading a training where I led conversations on emotional intelligence, confidence, leadership and gender norms - all conversations I LOVE. And what I share what it felt like when I realized that the hypothesis I had four years ago is really beginning to take shape. The belief: that women and girls GLOBALLY are facing similar challenges around confidence, and it's starting at an early age. My hope is that after listening to this conversation, you take away that sometimes, when you're a disrupter, many people won't get what you're trying to build. What happens when you tell and live your truth? You are in fact disrupting the status quo. And it's scary as hell. In this solo episode, Dina reflects on what she has been reflecting on the hard truth of being a disrupter and what it takes to tell your truth. She talks about why so many women who are disrupters - within their careers, to their families, to even in front of the mirror disrupting their own toxic thought patterns - can relate to how hard it can feel. Because to be a disrupter requires you to live by your truth. She shares one of her favorite quotes by Muriel Rukeyser: "What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? The world would split open." Our work as women is to name our fears of the world splitting open if we hsare our truth and help others and outselves to do it anyway. To see the ways in which we are silenced NOT as character flaws but as learned behaviors in a world that wants us quiet, compliant, and endlessly serving others' needs before and instead of our own. It is understandable, even to be expected — your fear of what might happen when/if you tell your truth. Still and always, it deserves to be spoken and lived — no matter what, all the time, endlessly, and in every single context and conversation possible.    In this episode, Dina shares three reminders to be aware of when you are leaning into the discomfort of telling your truth and disrupting the status quo. Because knowing/anticipating the “havoc” that will potentially result when you DO tell your truth is all the data you need to know this is EXACTLY what is required for you to be fully yourself. What you fear serves you. It's a powerful form of discernment AND it's the evidence that you can trust yourself and your truth enough to speak and live it. *************** What if the only person standing in your way was YOU? In all honesty, when Dina met Lina over 20 years ago, she embodied disruption and being your own blueprint. Sitting across from Lina in London over coffee while she was pursuing her PhD, Dina looked up to Lina in so many ways - mostly for her brazen, tell it like it is way - that is just purely infectious. In a word, Lina is committed to building a better world for women. She is a global women's rights expert and gender equality advocate with decades of experience worldwide. An activist, academic, and an aid worker with a 25-year track record in creating positive change for women in over 20 countries around the world - Afghanistan, Haiti, Central African Republic, Papua New Guinea, and more - Lina speaks and publishes frequently on a range of women's issues – on global stages and in the international media. Lina is a force to be reckoned with. She is someone who is integral to the very thinking and action in the field of woman's rights. Not only will she tell it like it is, she'll give you a healthy dose of wit. And if you're fortunate to be invited to her home, she'll put out a huge spread. A feisty disrupter herself, Lina shows us in the episode what disruption has looked like over the course of a career spanning over two decades and what disruption looks like now. Identity can be a weird thing. The way we think of ourselves, how we define ourselves, the story we tell ourselves about who we are, all of that comes together to create our identity. But what happens when we reach a crossroads where we are clear that we have to let go of a certain part of our identity - or pehaps all of it entirely? In this solo episode, Dina unpacks a topic that doesn't get enough attention, and that's grief. But not in the sense you would think. We talk about grieving the loss of an identity we have let go of in order to move forward. For many women, they have planted the seeds of courage to go after their truth and what truly matters to them. But it's not a process that is without its moments of uncertainty and doubt. It's a veritable rollercoaster of emotions. Mourning the loss of the person you used to be, the relationships that you built around that identity and the dreams that no longer serve you. And all the while, realizing that letting go is the only way to grow. Dina shares how taking the time to reflect on your identity is not only necessary, it's a radical act of self-determination, acknowledging pieces that will never be the same and establishing new pieces of the self that are built on things that came before. ************** If you are looking for a supportive community of like-minded women who are committed to unlearning the toxic thought patterns and negative stories on repeat, then look no further. For as long as I can remember, I have been the stereotypical “good girl.” While it's something I used to take pride in when I was younger, I'm now realizing how problematic it has been - in my friendships, in my relationships, and in my career. Being the good girl, or telling yourself you have no other choice comes at a cost: an immense amount of pressure, most of it self-inflicted. As a person who has always strived to improve (mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally, socially), I have often fallen into the trap of attempting perfection, which always ends in failure. People get disappointed with good girls - because it's impossible to be good ALL the time. Because being a “good girl” comes with a lot of pressure to be well-behaved, kind, generous, modest, enthusiastic, polite, and friendly at all times. In this solo episode, Dina reflects on a thread that has been coming up this season sitting down with disrupters - the long held belief that we have to be good in order to be liked, validated, and successful. And the longer we resist it, the longer we stew in our own resentment. It's high time we really call out the behavior of people rewarding girls (and women) for being good - and just let us BE. **************** Be sure to rate, review and subscribe to Embracing Enough and join the conversation with Enough Labs on Instagram @enoughlabs and via the website at www.enoughlabs.com

We define what it means to be a disrupter in this episode. Simply put, we see it as someone who is brave enough to challenge the status quo and introduce new and innovative ideas. It's about thinking outside the box, taking a risk, and not being afraid to fail in the face of experimenting with a different perspective. Let's face it, many of us are in a disparaging relationship with our bodies. We transpose an innocent comment from a friend into a deposition on our appearance. We beat ourselves up—sometimes literally—every time we gain a few pounds, go on a crash diet, then cheat on that diet, throwing our body into a seesaw of coping strategies to try to force the outcome we feel we should be at. The truth is: our environment influences our body image. We pick up on the body-image culture from seemingly everywhere: school; work comments; friends; parties; television; magazines with size zero models on every page - it's never-ending. From our earliest days, we hear our physical appearance is critically important in every facet of our life. One off-putting look or perceived slight can send us into crisis mode. If we are not careful, we pass this mindset onto our inner circle and to our children. Now, we know how we got here. The question is, how do we break out of this unhealthy mindset and get not only comfortable with our bodies, but have a healthy relationship to accepting our bodies confidently? In this powerful conversation with Molly Goodman, a life coach and intuitive mentor, we unpack the unlearning journey as it relates to body image, how toxic diet culture is, and how to release the shame that so many of us have with relationship to our bodies and instead focusing on how to prioritize what makes your body work, feel good and function best over constant thoughts of losing weight and what you see in the mirror. In this episode of Embracing Enough, I sit down with Molly Goodman, life coach and intuitive mentor. Molly is a Certified Life Coach dedicated to helping women develop intuitive self-trust and heal their body image. She guides clients into the gray area of life so they can abandon perfectionism and diet culture, instead of abandoning themselves. Using a unique combination of coaching, creative self-care techniques, and mindset makeovers, she teaches her clients to love and respect their bodies exactly as they are. It's her mission to help women honor their needs, observe their habits, infuse magic into everyday life, and expand into that next level version of themselves. I started off the episode explaining how I was going through my own breakthrough at the time and am still unpacking what I'm learning from it all (and of course, UNLEARNING). Sid is an ambassador for the EPIC WOMAN Conference and a phenomenal coach - and if you know Sid, you immediately feel this grounded confidence in him. So, when I heard that he works explicitly with women as a coach, and I had to learn more. Sid Scott is the creator of the CURE coaching framework, which is the process he uses to help women achieve their best breakthroughs. His company, Your Best Breakthrough empowers women to breakthrough physically, emotionally, spiritually AND financially. Having spent 8 years as a language analyst working in counter-intelligence, he uses a tactical yet spiritual approach to guiding women through the work to have them boldly step into the woman who creates all of the outcomes she desires. Sid has gone through physical, spiritual, emotional and financial breakthroughs with the support of the incredible women in his life, and so he aims to pour into who has poured into him. In this conversation, Sid and I talk about what he finds most common amongst his clients that they are consciously trying to unlearn, and we unpack what he in this season has been working to unlearn himself. Eggshells

Unlearning is a tricky thing. It's hard to unlearn ANYTHING that has been so deeply part of your conditioning that you've barely noticed it. You don't even know where your identity begins and the programming you've been conditioned to align yourself with ends. And if you're anything like me, and consciously wanting to unpack how all of this conditioning hasn't been serving you, it can feel like you are perpetually walking on eggshells. Walking on eggshells is linked to feeling self-conscious and cautious about what you do and say. It feels like being in a hypervigilant state of awareness about the emotional state of others; and it can manifest as automatically scanning others for cues or behavior in order to avoid confrontation, rejection, conflict or that person's erratic or explosive responses. I'm not ashamed to admit it, but I feel like I've been walking on eggshells my whole life - afraid to do or say the wrong thing all the time. In this week's episode, I talk about my relationship to walking on eggshells in virtually every facet of my life and the ways it has held me back. And declare that I no longer want to walk on that shaky ground a second longer. I hope you enjoy it. The next cohort of The Unlearning Lab begins June 1st. Will you join in this cohort. This week, I sit down with Mickaela McNatt from Magnify More to talk about unlearning the mixed messaging we received growing up and what it takes to choose something different. In this conversation, we go all in and explore what it is to FULLY embody your magic... FULLY embody your bigness... FULLY embody the fullness of who you are, whatever that looks like and however that feels true for you. We hear from Mickaela about her unlearning journey sorting through all of the messages she received about what she should aspire to - being a mom, taking care of the house, be your own boss but don't be too bossy, ask for a raise but don't ask for too much, be successful on your own but not too successful. You get the (dizzying) picture. Mickaela lets us into her story and what she had to consciously choose to trust her own knowing. And it is powerful, trust me! Mickaela McNatt is a Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Master Success Coach and Reiki Master. She's the founder and head trainer of Magnify More, a coaching and training institute. This week, I sit down with my book proposal coach turned friend, Richelle Fredson to unpack her journey with unlearning perfectionism. It's a topic that all too many of us can relate to and I know you are going to love this conversation with Richelle. In this powerful episode, Richelle and I get into the ways that the seeds of perfectionism are planted early in us as women, how it shows up in every facet of life. With Richelle and I both celebrating our glorious 40s, we reflect on how perfectionism can't take up any more space than it already has in our lives. Richelle Fredson, book publishing consultant and the “six-figure book deal coach,” knows all the angles of the publishing biz. An industry vet, she spent 15 years at Hay House Inc., most recently as the Director of Publicity and Book Marketing, as well as Acquisitions. She now works with aspiring and existing authors who are looking to expand their business, create an impact, and shift the current dialogue. Her expertise, paired with her sharp instincts, has helped hundreds of authors create impactful and marketable book concepts and proposals, resulting in millions of dollars in publishing deals with top publishers. Her recent clients include Farnoosh Torabi, Chrissy King, Jannese Torres-Rodriguez, Jen Winston, Dr. Vanessa Marin and more. Richelle brings a unique gift to the table: she's been on both sides of the deal and knows what publishers and authors are looking for and how to get it. Through this lens, she guides authors as they anchor their stories and amplify their expertise to make a greater impact. She's also the host of the Bound + Determined podcast where she lifts the veil on book publishing through education and interviews. Unlearning the Belief that You're Broken

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 4, 2022 22:45

In this solo episode, I talk through my current unlearning of the belief that there is something "broken" about me and that I need fixing. A couple of weeks, I got some UNSOLICITED feedback from someone who called me out for being a coach and helping women out on their journey because I was clearly SO broken. Did it hurt when I heard it? Duh. I'm human. But I also didn't need to internalize it as my truth. I hear from women all the time that they feel like they're broken and what's worse, some feel beyond repair. But I'm here to talk about that it couldn't be further from the truth. There is nothing about you that needs to be fixed. Subscribing to the belief that there is something broken in us or that needs to be fixed keeps us stuck and stagnant; and robs us of our confidence to do the things that really matter to us. Here's a thought: why not try on the idea that you can give yourself massive amounts of self-love, compassion and permission instead of hyper-focusing on the broken parts of you and see what that feels like. That's what I choose to do - in every moment of every day.
