Anika and Liz are here to discuss the NEW and WIDELY REVILED streaming movie Star Trek: Section 31. And here's Antimatter Pod's hottest take yet: we ... liked it? Not because it's good! (It's not!) But ... well, have a listen while we discuss... We feel cheated that we didn't get series that Erika Lippoldt and Bo-yeon Kim wrote But is it Star Trek? Yes. Next question! We are intrigued by Georgiou's decision to go into the hospitality industry Rachel Garrett is not quite a fully-fledged character, but she has enough potential that we're sad we'll probably never Kasey Ruhl in the role again Farscape, Alias and Enterprise vibes Is Zeph a transphobic joke in human form? The costumes by far were the best part of the movie and we have a lot to say about Rachel Garrett's collection of blue pageboy wigs
Star Trek fans are in for a treat as Paramount+ announces the development of a new Star Trek film that will kick off "Phase 2" of its modern Star Trek television franchise. This new film is set to be based on the long-gestating Section 31 spinoff series that was originally intended to be a streaming show. According to sources, the idea for the movie was conceived by Alex Kurtzman, the franchise's boss, who wanted to shift the focus to tentpole films. The new movie will be led by Michelle Yeoh, who made her Star Trek debut as Captain Philippa Georgiou in the first episode of Star Trek: Discovery. Yeoh's character was killed off early on in the series, but she returned to play her Mirror-Universe counterpart, Emperor Philippa Georgiou, in subsequent seasons. Plans were announced in 2019 for Yeoh to reprise her role as Mirror Georgiou and lead a Discovery spinoff series focused on Section 31, Starfleet's black-ops division. Kurtzman would return as an executive producer, with Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt as showrunners. However, due to concerns about oversaturation of Star Trek streaming shows, the plans for the Section 31 spinoff series were reworked into a tentpole film. Kurtzman and his team plan to release a new Paramount+-exclusive Star Trek film every two years as part of their vision for the franchise post-Discovery and post-Picard. This new film will be the first Star Trek feature to hit screens since 2016's Star Trek Beyond, and the first to spin directly out of a TV show since 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis. Yeoh's Section 31 streaming film will serve as the maiden voyage for the second phase of Star Trek on Paramount+. This announcement comes at a time when the Star Trek TV franchise is in a transitional period, with Star Trek: Picard ending after three seasons and Discovery ending after its fifth season. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a Discovery spinoff, is set to debut its second season on Paramount+ this summer, with a third season already in the works. Additionally, the animated shows Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy are gearing up for new seasons on Paramount+ as well. A Star Trek series focusing on Starfleet Academy was also recently given a series order. The Star Trek franchise has been a mainstay in science fiction for over 50 years, and this new development shows that it is still going strong. With a new movie based on the Section 31 spinoff and a clear vision for the future of the franchise, fans can look forward to many more years of exploring strange new worlds, seeking out new life and new civilizations, and boldly going where no one has gone before.

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 3 Episode 9 – Terra Firma, Part 1 We’re back!!! On this supersized episode, Ruthie and Brian talk through Star Trek: Discovery, Season 3 Episode 9, titled Terra Firma, Part 1. This episode’s teleplay was written by Alan McElroy, with the story by Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt & Alan McElroy, and it was directed by Omar Madha. Sorry about the lateness this episode is in getting to you. Unfortunately, I had to work over the weekend and later into the week, so my editing time was compromised. That said, I got this episode released (mistitled, but I’ve since fixed it) on our YouTube Channel. Georgiou’s condition worsens and the Discovery computer sends them to a distant planet for a remote chance for a cure. What happens there may surprise you. May surprise you??? I was DUMBFOUNDED!!! For the first time in more than 200 episodes of podcasting, I could not rate this episode!!! It was SO out of left field for me. I did not expect them to go to the Mirror Universe, though, in retrospect, I should have. Opinions were many and spirited for this episode. After re-watching it more than once (I only got to watch it once this week prior to recording), I can tell you that I appreciated the episode a LOT more after the shock of it wore off, but you’ll hear me talk about that a lot this week. All in all, I knew it was (mostly) a great episode this week, but I had so many questions about it, I had to defer my rating. Ruthie also had a lot of questions, but she gave it a rating. Going to the Mirror Universe now seems like it’s a natural thing to do, given Georgiou’s condition, but we questioned its place in the season, and it taking away from the main plot. Next week, I’ll bring something up about how it seems like a back door pilot and only placed here because they decided to bring Michelle Yeoh and Georgiou into Season 3.

Star Trek Discovery has hit its third episode of season three, and "People of Earth" is an emotional rollercoaster, to say the least.Join Erik as he takes the con this week along with the rest of the ASNP crew as they wrap up Michael's return to Discovery, the journey to an Earth that is less than welcoming, and the introduction of one of our new main characters, Adira (Blu del Barrio).Plus, our ASNP Twitter Subspace Poll, mailbag, and the announcement of our Path to NCC-1031 winner! Writing partners Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt served as writers/producers on the first three seasons of Star Trek: Discovery, and are currently co-executive producers of the upcoming spinoff Section 31. They discuss having to juggle the many mandates and creative challenges in launching a show like Discovery. They discuss geeking out over Michelle Yeoh. They absolutely do not discuss Section 31.

There's a weird balance in this week's Star Trek Discovery where there is a lot of stuff happening, but a lot of it not feeling very consequential. Pike gazes into the looking glass and finds a future that elicits a reaction much like Carol Marcus' in Star Trek Into Darkness when Khan killed her father. A time crystal is procured, and all they lack is a suit to install it in, or the energy of a supernova to power it. Leland is nowhere to be found in this episode, but that doesn't mean the buddy team-up between Spock and Burnham is safe from Control. This episode was written by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt, and has Douglas Aarniokoski back again in the director's chair. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 6: The Sound of Thunder For episode 31 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Season 2 Episode 6 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, The Sound of Thunder. It was written by co-producers Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt, who are said to be the creators of the new Section 31 series, and directed by Douglas Aarniokoski. You may have seen this referred to as The Sounds of Thunder, as all of the outlets had it as Sounds, but when it premiered, it was only a singular Sound. I’ve already seen several podcasts and YouTubers have it wrong. The Sound of Thunder is correct. Discussion on The Sound of Thunder begins at 17:50… We begin the podcast with feedback from previous episodes. Then, we finally get into this episode at 17 minutes 50 seconds in. Fred’s Pics and Spoiler Alert! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. To that end, SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t watched The Sound of Thunder, you may want to stop reading here! Another Big One for Saru… A new signal appears over Kaminar, Saru’s homeworld. Saru hasn’t been back since he left, but since going through the vahar’ai, he has undergone certain changes. Saru doesn’t immediately leave the captain’s chair when Pike is summoned to the bridge, and later borders on being insubordinate when Pike doesn’t choose him for the away team. Burnham diffuses the moment by asking for him to accompany her on the surface. Directed by Douglas Aarniokoski and written by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt, the third episode of Short Treks has our favorite Kelpien facing the hard reality behind the expression "You can't go home again." But in his case it's literal. The military told him he's not allowed to go there anymore. Featuring Doug Jones as Saru, and introducing Hannah Spear as Siranna and Robert Verlaque as Aradar, who may or may not play a role in the upcoming second season of Star Trek: Discovery. The always exceptional Michelle Yeoh also swings by for a bit.

Star Trek: Discovery – Short Treks, Episode 3: The Brightest Star Ruthie and I are back with the third Short Trek! We recorded episodes for the first three Short Treks on Tuesday, December 18th in back to back to back fashion, and this is the final episode that we recorded that night. This Short Trek is titled The Brightest Star. It was written by executive story editors Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt, and directed by co-executive producer Douglas Aarniokoski. Finally, an origin story! This is the first Short Trek that I would consider an origin story. This one focuses on our favorite alien commander, Saru! Well, he’s at least the favorite alien for one of us. As such, Ruthie didn’t care for this episode as much as I did, as she’s not a big fan of his character and/or species, which she finds confusing. I understand that sentiment, as I was expecting more backstory on the prey aspects of his species, and his height, super speed, strength and especially his threat ganglia. I came up with a theory on how this evolved. His species was hunted, probably by the Ba’ul, but that Mirror Universe saying about scared Kelpiens make tough Kelpiens plays in here. The hunt made Kelpiens less tasty, so a system evolved to make them live in a more idyllic surrounding, and that they didn’t live with that fear their whole life. As I’ve said on the podcast many a time, I HATE the term “headcanon”, so I’d prefer to consider this speculation and not anything that can be used as “gatekeeper” material. Speaking of an origin story, are we to believe that the reason why Saru’s species are called Kelpiens because they eat and/or harvest kelp? Really? That’s a little on the nose, don’t you think? Why did she take a shuttlecraft? I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that Lieutenant Georgiou was the one that rescued Saru from Kaminar, and that totally fits the Saru/Georgiou/Burnham dynamic, and why he was so hurt that he didn’t get to serve as the first officer under her. The appearance of Michelle Yeoh was very unexpected in any of these Short Treks, so I was very happy to see her. However, with that in mind, I did not understand part of that aspect of the story. Was there a reason why she took a shuttlecraft down to pick up Saru and not beam down to get him? This seems like the Prime Directive is under effect here, as the Kelpiens are not a warp-capable species, and we see Siranna see the shuttle as it leaves the planet, so this didn’t make sense to me. Fred’s Images As promised, I’ve included images Fred from The Netherlands sent us from his trip to Toronto last year, which showed scenes used in this Short Trek! In this episode, we are back for another review of Star Trek Discovery's Short Treks, with "The Brightest Star", featuring Doug Jones as Saru.
In this month’s episode, we review the Short Treks episode, “The Brightest Star,” the third of four mini-episodes leading up to Season Two of Discovery. Here’s a synopsis: A story from before Saru became the first Kelpien to join Starfleet. On his home planet of Kaminar, Young Saru lived a simple life with his father and sister. Full of ingenuity and a level of curiosity uncommon among his people, the Kelpien yearns to find out what lies beyond his village, leading him on an unexpected path. Discovery co-star Doug Jones stars as Saru. Written by Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt. Directed by Douglas Aarniokski. The episode stars Doug Jones as Saru and Clayton Scott as a Kelpien villager. Also, we report on some Star Trek news – and one rumor – that has come out over the last few weeks. Here’s our December 2018 podcast. Enjoy. #LLAP
