How fateful it is that the both of us are situated in New York and Korea - just like the protagonist Nora and her childhood sweetheart, Haesung. Unlike them, however, we don't struggle with the interpersonal tensions of an ill-fated, cosmically destined romantic relationship that is never to be. We discuss the intricacies of the premise and touch on the nuances of how language is used in the film, as well as some of Eun Sol's gripe with Greta Lee's Korean. Will you be rooting for it at The Oscars this Sunday? We reveal our thoughts and impressions about the film, and our takes on whether or not it is deserving of the Academy Award.

She has loved drawing since childhood. Due to family circumstances, she had to attend a beauty academy instead of an art school, but it was an opportunity that opened her eyes to makeup at an early age. Starting her assistant career at the age of 22, she is now an 18-year experienced makeup artist. She has worked on almost every makeup-related task, including fashion shows, advertisements, magazines, and music videos. When asked about proud and happy moments as a makeup artist, she mentioned doing makeup for a Jeju friend's wedding and creating makeup for a close couple's 10th-anniversary celebration. Finding joy in making someone happy solely through her talent turned out to be unexpectedly heartwarming. Living in a western village in Jeju with her husband and dog, Jembe, she often takes evening walks, drawing inspiration from the colors hidden in the sunset for her makeup. Lately, she pays closer attention to the colors of Jeju's nature and incorporates them into her makeup. In 2024, she plans to publish her own picture book, featuring drawings of her friends' faces.

Today on Scope Conditions: when is racial status a unifying force in politics?Shared experiences of prejudice and discrimination can sometimes help create shared political identities within and across racial minority groups and strong incentives for collective mobilization. But as our guest today points out, neither race nor racial-minority status maps neatly onto patterns of political coalition-building. Consider, for instance, the lack of an enduring political alliance between African-American and Afro-Caribbean communities in places like New York City or the absence before the 1970s of a Latino political identity encompassing Mexican-Americans, Cuban-Americans, and Puerto Ricans.Dr. Jae Yeon Kim, a senior data scientist at Code for America, has been thinking a lot about the conditions under which groups with shared experiences of racialization and discrimination join forces politically, and when political action is organized instead around other social markers like class and ethnicity. In his article “Racism Is Not Enough: Minority Coalition Building in San Francisco, Seattle, and Vancouver,” published in Studies in American Political Development, Jae unpacks a revealing comparison in patterns of mobilization and alliance-formation across the Chinatowns in these three cities. These cities all shared a long history of pervasive and violent anti-Asian racism – which one might have thought would generate a collective race-based political identity. But while Asian coalitions formed to fend off the gentrification of San Francisco's Chinatown, Vancouver's ethnic-Chinese population allied with their southern European neighbors, rather than fellow Asian-Canadians, in their fight for affordable housing.Jae tells us why that is by comparing patterns of residential segregation versus integration that shaped the logic of coalition-building in these three sites. We discuss how he gained analytical leverage for this comparison by looking at different exogenous shocks – natural disasters and duration of Japanese internment – that generated different patterns of settlement. We also talk with Jae about his broader work on how the experience of racism affects political identities and behaviors. We discuss a study he conducted with Nathan Chan and Vivien Leung that shows how Donald Trump's anti-Asian rhetoric affected Asian-Americans' partisan leanings. Jae also tells us about a paper with Reuel Rogers that problematizes the concept of “linked fate” and that analyzes the formation of race-based political identities as contingent processes that hinge heavily on elite strategies and historical dynamics.Works discussed in the episode:Chan, N., Kim, J., & Leung, V. (2022). COVID-19 and Asian Americans: How Elite Messaging and Social Exclusion Shape Partisan Attitudes. Perspectives on Politics, 20(2), 618-634. doi:10.1017/S1537592721003091Dawson, Michael. “You're clearly an expert at leaving useless people behind.”The Zombie Hordes Are Headed Our Way!For his first live-action film, director Yeon Sang-ho decided to take on a horror film with confined locations, certainly something first time directors do when figuring the medium out. On the other hand, the film is a zombie movie with hundreds of zombiefied people, both on and off the high-speed train in the title. It's fair to say he went big. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off our short series looking at the Train to Busan films, starting with Yeon's 2016 film Train to Busan. Here's a hint at what we talk about.First off, we love zombie movies so this is an easy one to talk about, particularly because Yeon gets so much right. It's a fun movie that sets things up quickly, then once the train ride starts and zombies appear, it never relents. The zombies themselves are well crafted and creepy in their movements. The film has some spectacular action set pieces as well.On top of that, however, we get some great characters that keep us engaged. Sure, they are fairly archetypal, but they're very likable. From our father-daughter pair at the heart of the story, to the husband and his pregnant wife, to the baseball player and his new cheerleader girlfriend, to the two older sisters, to the evil COO who can't get past his own self-interest, each character delivers an essential part of the story. There are some zombie rules developed in the world building that seem to be dropped or changed as the story needs them to be, but on the whole the movie's an exciting thrill ride. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Justin Joseph Hall's work has been acquired by major television networks such as HBO and he's worked as a lead creative on projects that received awards at The Emmys, TriBeCa Film Festival, Brooklyn Film Festival, and more. He is Director and Founder of Fourwind Films. Dorie Hall hosted the podcast which was held as a private screening in Minnesota. For his short, Justin brought a never publicly screened version of Yeon-Gi, an experimental Buddhist themed movie. This version was created in 32x9 aspect ratio, and includes a full reflections visible on screen. The emotional short created a lot to talk about in our discussion. The feature Justin chose to screen is the famous location documentary, Samsara. During the screening Fourwind chefs served a mouthwatering combination: potstickers, burgers, fries, and a cola. Through the visuals of nature and human altered locations, Samsara shows nature on land nearly void of life until we encounter various locations of cities and former settlements. It's an emotional journey around the earth with seemingly no connection except our location on the earth and what the montage movie weaves together through the beautiful images.

Today, we have Seo Yeon Yoon, Research Scientist at Gladstone Institutes. She is an avid researcher passionate about bringing diverse talent and ideas together to innovate solutions that overcome incurable diseases. She was also recently named to the Poets and Quants 2022 list of Best & Brightest Executive MBAs.Seo Yeon is originally from Jeonju City, South Korea, a mid-small town that didn't have a lot of people from other countries or cultures. Her parents sent her and her sister to Canada as international students to study and be exposed to a world with many people from different ethnicities, races, and cultures. In this episode, Seo Yeon talked about her experiences as an international student, how she ended up in Berkeley as an undergrad, and why she chose to study Biology. She also shared her career at Gladstone Institutes, why she pursued her MBA later in her career, and her experiences at Haas. She also shared what made her start using her Korean name once again and why it was one of her impactful decisions.Episode Quotes:One of the lessons she learned as an international studentI think, looking back, it was really important that I had that much exposure to this bigger world with people that just didn't really think like me or even talk like me. But they were just really kind and really good people with really good hearts. And I always kept that with me as a life lesson that, wherever I go, that's something that I do have to keep in mind that I also have to extend as a friend and as a colleague in any places that I work.On her MBA applicationI went through the application process and tried to be as authentic as possible about who I was and why I really wanted to come to Haas. And while it was stressful, it just felt relatively good. It didn't really feel like it was an extra chore, per se. It was hard, but it wasn't something I was dragging myself into because I still wasn't sure about something. It was definitely a really good process to go through. And, of course, I was very, very happy to find out that all that effort and bidding on myself like that ended up very, fortunately, being a success. It was really wonderful. Why she started using her Korean nameI was thinking about how my parents named me. They didn't just name me just out of a whim or just out of nothing. They really had thought about it carefully about what they wanted to name their first child as. And my entire name is really, in and of itself, a form of a person, a woman my parents wanted me to be.And so, when I started to piece all of these puzzles together, I began to realize that, am I really doing justice to myself and also to the people that I love? That I will be sticking with an English name when it doesn't make anybody comfortable? And, first and foremost, it didn't make me comfortable. And so, I think that series of internal questioning and meditation and just, really, self-discovery process really got me to think about what is the easiest and also the most forefront thing on action can I really take to start on that discovery path. And the first thing was, really, the name.Show Links:LinkedInSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations

We discuss age-old and hardened stereotypes, changing the narrative about who Asian-Americans are, and activating Asian communities to take civic action.   The term model minority was coined by a white sociologist to pit Japanese Americans against Black Americans. Many Asian-Americans have used the model minority myth to protect them, though in the end it does not insulate them from discrimination and racism. In fact, the objectification of Asian women for entertainment persists, and Asian-Americans are perpetually seen as foreign.    Follow Sung Yeon on Twitter: https://twitter.com/schoimorrow   Follow Mila on Twitter: https://twitter.com/milaatmos    Follow Future Hindsight on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/futurehindsightpod/   Sponsors Thanks to Avast for supporting Future Hindsight!
