Vatican complains after French court rules in favor of nun dismissed from religious orderAP News,By Nicole Winfield, on April 13, 2024https://apnews.com/article/vatican-france-nun-pope-marie-ferreol-ouellet-937da5e4b91b3b591b72b9edeb4a1f76 The discussion centered on a French court ruling that held a Vatican official responsible for wrongfully dismissing a nun from a religious order, highlighting the Vatican's secretive process in ousting the nun. Despite the Vatican's claim of no notification of the verdict, the ruling was condemned as a violation of religious freedom. The investigation, led by Cardinal Mark W tasked by Pope Francis, resulted in the nun's expulsion in 2020, reflecting French courts' intervention in church matters to hold officials accountable for misconduct and cover-up.The panel discussed the implications of governments prioritizing religious organizations and whether they should be held to unique legal circumstances. While religious organizations may have internal procedures, they should not be above the law, especially considering historical instances of misconduct. France's intervention was seen as a step forward in asserting sovereignty and enforcing national laws, irrespective of religious influence. The conversation delved into the comparison between military and church authority, highlighting the difference in accountability and the need for religious organizations to adhere to secular laws. The panel debated whether the church's annoyance at state intervention was justified, considering the employer-employee relationship in the nun's case. There was acknowledgment of progress in holding the church accountable and the need to separate theological rule from civil authority.Jonathan referenced a study on child abuse by the Catholic Church in France, citing alarming figures of victims and minimal legal actions. This led to a broader discussion on church accountability and the importance of secular governance over theological rule. Richard emphasized the fundamental issue of employment relations in the nun's case and the larger context of the church's accountability to civil laws.Overall, the discussion underscored the significance of state intervention in holding religious organizations accountable and ensuring adherence to secular laws, particularly in cases of misconduct and abuse. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.17.1 featuring Jimmy Jr., Richard Allen, Scott Dickie and Jonathan RoudabushBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.
SynopsisRoyalty was often flattered by the composers of the Baroque age. Handel wrote glorious ceremonial music for British monarchs, and Bach was not above working up an obsequiously complimentary cantata or two for some German prince. At the French Court of Versailles, King Louis XIV appeared on stage for cameo appearances during operas and ballets whose stories complemented Louis' wisdom, talent and impeccable good taste. On today's date in 1987, at the Houston Grand Opera in Texas, Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger, and Chairman Mao didn't come on stage in their own personas, but did appear as characters in the premiere of a new opera by American composer John Adams. Nixon in China was a somewhat surreal and not necessarily flattering dramatization of a real event: President Nixon's ground-breaking trip to communist China in 1972.One can only guess at the former president's reaction to being portrayed on stage. Adams did report that Nixon's lawyer, Leonard Garment, attended a performance of Nixon in China, most likely on the former president's behalf. No lawsuit followed, and, Adams notes with some amusement, Garment even became something of a fan of his music!Music Played in Today's ProgramJohn Adams (b. 1947) Nixon in China - Orchestra of St. Luke's; Edo de Waart, cond. In this episode, we interview Professor Kathleen Wilson-Chevalier, the host of the upcoming Kings & Queens 13 conference in May 2024 at The American University of Paris. In this interview, Kathleen tells us all about the inspiration behind the theme "Gift-giving and Communication Networks". We also discuss the conference's commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the death of Queen Claude de France (1499-1524) and why this important but all too often sidelined queen deserves far greater attention. Find out more about the plans for Kings & Queens 13 on the conference webpage--the call for papers is currently open with a deadline of 31 October 2023. Nota bene from our guest:Louise de Savoie was mother of the king, never queen nor queen mother.Louis XII and Anne of Brittany supported Guillaume Briçonnet and Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples in their reform of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in 1513.Claude's daughter Madeleine de France became queen of Scotland when she was sixteen and died there the year of her marriage (1537). Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples wrote a Vocabulaire du Psaultier to teach Latin to Madeleine and her brother Charles, which he published in 1529.Claude's last child, Marguerite de France, became duchess of Savoy in 1559. Traitorous, wanton, frivolous, obese, foreign, deceitful. These are all terms used to describe Isabeau of Bavaria, a woman at the center of one of the most turbulent eras in French history. She shared the world stage with names like Joan of Arc, Henry V, and Charles VII but her name would not be revered and lionized by later generations. Instead, she would be cast as the ultimate villain in the tale of the struggle for France. She would be blamed for inflaming animosity and divisions within the French Court and driving her husband, King Charles VI, to madness. The information we have about Isabeau is often from years after her lifetime and none cite contemporary sources; leading us to question the validity of her legacy within the popular imagination. In the end, Isabeau's life provides an opportunity for a much more nuanced legacy. Featured Guest: Dr. Tracy Adams, a medieval historian who focuses on French and English literature alongside feminist theory. She is the author of numerous books, most importantly for this podcast, her seminal work The Life and Afterlife of Isabeau of Bavaria.Special thanks to Kieren Peatling for the new theme music! La Princesse de Clèves is a French novel which was published anonymously in 1678. Many regarded the novel as the precursor to the modern psychological novel and a classic of world literature. Its author is generally attributed to Madame de La Fayette. The novel is unique for its highly realistic plot, introspective language that explored the characters' inner thoughts and emotions.Joining the show today is Dr. Benjamin Fancy, author of the recently published essay titled ‘Fantôme de devoir': La Princesse de Clèves's Haunting Duty. Jeanne d'Albret (1528-1572): The apple doesn't fall from the tree–at least in the case of Jeanne d'Albret! A reform-minded French royal like her mother, Marguerite de Navarre, Jeanne went a step further than her mom by boldly breaking with the Catholic Church and aligning herself fully with the Protestant cause. Placed in precarious political situations from the time she was young, Jeanne relied on her relationship with Jesus to give her the strength and conviction she needed to navigate the political corruption and spiritual complacency plaguing the French Court. And that's just scratching the surface! So join us for Part One of her intriguing story! Great Women of Faith by Nancy A. In today's episode we chronicle Renee's early years in the French Court, highlighting not only the early developments of her Christian faith, but the dangers she would face as Catholic religious and political leaders began to resist the Reformation movement. The French court just acquitted the murderer who brutally killed 65-year-old Jew Sarah Halimi in 2017. They are literally allowing a man to get away with murder and the media is silent It is unconscionable that virtually the entire media have turned a blind eye to this gross injustice. #BenEKing What is happening in Mozambique? Or better, what is not happening in Mozambique? We don't see significant signs of international aid or pressure to fight the growth of the Islamic State group in the Northern Mozambique. Either from the United Nations or from Portuguese Communities. Why is this relevant? Because the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, founded in 1996, is a multilateral organization and political association, which focuses on the cooperation of countries which official language is the Portuguese. Therefore, obvio that Portugal and Brazil are part of it but also other countries such as Angola, Cabo Verde and Mozambique. Queen of Scotland Mary Stuart travels to France with four ladies-in-waiting to secure her politically strategic engagement to the king's son, Prince Francis. Mary and Francis share a mutual attraction, even though he has reservations about the wisdom of an alliance with Scotland. Complicating issues is Bash, Francis' illegitimate half-brother whom Mary finds herself drawn to in spite of herself. The French Court is also full of less romantic challenges for Mary, who finds her engagement -- and life -- threatened until she finds an ally in a mysterious shrouded guide. With all that she faces, Mary rallies, readying herself to rule and trying to find a balance between the demands of her country and those of her heart. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wgwcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wgwcast/support

Hassan Diab’s ordeal began over 12 years ago when France requested his extradition in relation to the bombing of a Paris synagogue in 1980. Hassan was extradited to France in 2014 where he spent 3 years in solitary confinement. Finally French authorities dropped all charges against Hassan Diab, citing lack of evidence, and Diab returned to Canada. Now a French court has said it wants to proceed to trial in his case. Tim McSorley of the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group says the Canadian government must intervene to prevent a further miscarriage of justice.
Ian Bailey joins me on today's podcast. This episode was recorded only days before Ian's most recent court case, where he was contesting his extradition to France. He was found guilty, in his absence, in a French Court, for the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996. This case has captivated people in Ireland, and much further afield for years. Since recording, Ian found out his fate - he is now a free man, as the State decided not to contest the court's judgement on that day back in October. In this episode, I got a glimpse into Ian's inner World, inclusive of his coping mechanisms in life, especially when it comes to matters of the law. We discuss many topics, and Ian also recites some of his poetry, along with explaining the background to his poems. Enjoy! Music Credit: www.seankochmusic.com
More than a dozen people have been convicted for their role in providing support for the Charlie Hebdo attacks, which saw 17 people killed.
Royalty was often flattered by the composers of the Baroque age. Handel wrote glorious ceremonial music for British monarchs, and Bach was not above working up an obsequiously complimentary cantata or two for some German Prince. At the French Court of Versailles, King Louis XIV himself appeared on stage for cameo appearances during operas and ballets whose stories complemented Louis’ wisdom, talent, and impeccable good taste. On today’s date in 1987, at the Houston Grand Opera in Texas, Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger, and Chairman Mao didn’t come on stage in their OWN personas, but did appear as characters in the premiere of a new opera by the American composer, John Adams. “Nixon in China” was a somewhat surreal and not necessarily flattering dramatization of a real event: President Nixon’s ground-breaking trip to communist China in 1972. One can only guess at the former President’s reaction to being portrayed on stage. Adams did report that Richard Nixon’s lawyer, Leonard Garment, attended a performance of “Nixon in China,” most likely on the former President’s behalf. No lawsuit followed, and, Adams notes with some amusement, that Garment even became something of a fan of his music!

Sophie (age 7) and Ellie (age 5) want a story of a girl knight. So they tell the story of Joan of Arc, the French heroine who turned the tide of The Hundred Years War.----more---- We learn how England’s Henry V and his archers crushed the French knights at the Battle of Agincourt. He then agreed to that he will succeed the old French king. Everything is thrown into turmoil when Henry V dies. The French King’s son, the Dauphin fights back. But the English archers are invincible, the English occupy Paris, and the Dauphin can’t even be properly crowned King at the traditional Cathedral of Rheims. Then a French peasant girl, Joan of Arc, appears at the French Court. She had made her way there across enemy territory disguised as a man. She says that angels have told her to help throw the English out of France. At first the Dauphin does not believe her. But he and the priests test her and she passes every test. They give her armour and a banner and she leads his armies in battle at the critical battle of Orleans. Joan and her army smash through the English lines and save the city. Then in the pursuit there is a pitched battle between the English and the French. This time the French knights ride down the English archers in a stunning victory. The military power of the English is broken. Joan and the Dauphin march on Rheims and the Dauphin is crowned King. Joan continues fighting. But the French nobles do not support her. In one battle she is pulled off her horse and captured. The English put her on trial for saying that angels were talking to her and for dressing as a man. They find her guilty and she is burned to death at the stake. But her efforts had turned the tide. The French went on to win The Hundred Year War. In 1705, the French Court in Versailles was full of plotting and scheming. This was also happening with a Duke's wife and his five mistresses, who were all trying to improve their own circumstances in 'The Orange Grove' by Kate Murdoch. When truth is stranger than fiction you have a novel in the making. Meg Keneally fictionalizes the real life story of convict Mary Bryant in 'Fled' which dramatises the transportation and escape of a forthright and independent women in those early years of Australian settlement.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the life and works of Christine de Pizan, who wrote at the French Court in the late Middle Ages and was celebrated by Simone de Beauvoir as the first woman to 'take up her pen in defence of her sex.' She wrote across a broad range, and was particularly noted for challenging the depiction of women by famous writers such as Jean de Meun, author of the Romance of the Rose. She has been characterised as an early feminist who argued that women could play a much more important role in society than the one they were allotted, reflected in arguably her most important work, The Book of the City of Ladies, a response to the seemingly endless denigration of women in popular texts of the time.
