Mona Siddiqui and guests hear from Rev Denzil Larbi. He reflects on his cousin, Elianne Andam, who was 15 when she was fatally stabbed at a bus stop in Croydon, South London, in September 2023. He discusses their Christmases together and how the family mark Christmas without her.The panel of guests explore the complexities that often come with religious festivals especially those that come with an expectation of jollity. Do religions do enough for those who are grieving or isolated at times of collective merriment? Should religious leaders and communities be more responsible and nuanced in their approach? And, are some religions better at dealing with grief than others? To discuss Mona is joined by Jasvir Singh, from the Department of Theology and Religion at Birmingham University, Chair of City Sikhs, and the founder and Chair of the British Sikh Report, the Revd Lucy Winkett, Rector of St James's, Piccadilly, and Priest-in-Charge of St Pancras's Church, Euston Road, and Remona Aly, British Muslim journalist, commentator and broadcaster with a focus on faith, identity and lifestyle. Air isn't an object, right? Wrong. This week, climate comms expert and historian Dr Alice Bell makes Dan and Kasia think hard about ephemerality via a jam jar of polluted air, captured 'fresh' from the Euston Road in north London. In doing so they explore the history of the climate crisis – where it came from, who covered it up, and when people started noticing we were ruining the only planet we have.  Alice leads us through fog, smog and fumes, answering questions like: why were London's famous “pea-soupers” yellow-tinged (like yellow split-peas), rather than green-tinged? Why was coal dust understood to be a sign of thriving industry and progress? Why did unwell people go to seaside resorts to “take the air”? Which popular English meal was invented purely to give people a social activity indoors, away from the smog? Why have children always been at the forefront of the climate movement, from 1980s episodes of Blue Peter to the school strikes today? What do tobacco and fossil fuel lobbying have in common? Elsewhere, there is talk of Shell: The Musical, whaling ships, Captain Planet, Margaret Thatcher, and an answer to the biggest climate question of all, the one you've all been asking: what does Ludacris have to do with arctic drilling? Dr Alice Bell is Head of Policy for Climate and Health at the Wellcome. Her book ‘Our Biggest Experiment: A History of the Climate Crisis' (Bloomsbury, 2021) is available now, and is captivating, enlightening stuff - get involved! **** For the full-length episode, and 30-odd more exclusive episodes –  please join our Patreon!! ** ONLY £4 A MONTH TO SUPPORT YOUR FAVOURITE CULTURAL HISTORIANS ** **** Theme music: Mr Beatnick Artwork: Archie Bashford

In this episode, which is No. 6 in Danny´s Monopoly Squares History series you get to learn all about Euston Road. This inner London Ring road which is right on the boundary of the congestion charge zone has been giving drivers grey hair for centuries. The road has seen a lot of change, including the one of the greatest acts of architectural vandalism. It is home to several once-iconic buildings, 6 stations and fantastic museums. Surprisingly, it also has its very own wind tunnel and is home to a building that makes Danny think of Trumpton. You´ll have to listen to find out which one. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ironically, Euston Road was built hundreds of years ago to help farmers to avoid congestion.  The road was named after the landowner´s ancestral home. Euston Station was the first central London railway station. The original entrance arch stands on Euston Road, though originally it was demolished ahead of the original Euston station. For train and tube travellers, Euston Road is a magnet. It has 6 stations. The British Library building is on Euston Road. BEST MOMENTS ‘Everyone goes this way to avoid paying. ´ ‘This is believed to be the windiest part of the capital.' ‘The church is a Greek Revival church.' Having worked with some of the most difficult people in the UK, he is a natural storyteller and entertainer, whilst purveying the most fascinating information that you didn't know you didn't know. A writer and host of pub quizzes across London, he has travelled extensively and speaks several languages. He has been a consultant for exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum and Natural History Museum in London as well as presenting accelerated learning seminars across the UK. With a wide range of knowledge ranging from motor mechanics to opera to breeding carnivorous plants, he believes learning is the most effective when it's fun. Uniquely delivered, this is history without the boring bits, told the way only Danny Hurst can. James Joyce. That was me at school as well. Ironically, I ended up becoming a historian. The Unusual Histories podcast is all about the history you don't learn at school, nor indeed anywhere else. Discover things that you didn't know that you didn't know; fascinating historical luminaries and their vices and addictions, the other numerous sides of every story. We start with the Monopoly Series, in which we explore how the game came to be, the real-life connection between the cheapest and most expensive properties, the history of each location, how proportionate the values were then and are today, what the hell a "community chest" is and whether free parking really does exist anywhere in London.  If you love history; or indeed if you hate history, this is the podcast for you…

Back in chapter 120, we met two extraordinary women, Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale, who transformed the world of nursing. Now we're looking at four more women who were just as remarkable. They took on the stronghold of the doctors, and broke in. As they did that, they also began to force open the doors of the universities. The specific task of gaining access to universities for women was taken on by another woman mentioned in this episode, and she directed yet another towards the battle for the vote. As well as the women, the episode also looks briefly at a Churchill and the strange launchpad for life he provided for another, his son. But that son is a historical giant, so strange or not, it was a launchpad that would work for him. Illustration: The Elizabeth Garret Anderson Hospital building in Euston Road, London. January 18, 1976. Colwyn Bay, Wales. The family of 15-year old Peter Watts returns to their residence and discovers he has left behind a note to say that he went to see a friend. Ten hours later, Peter's unconscious body is discovered on the Euston Road underpass in London over 250 miles away and he dies after being rushed to the hospital. While Peter's injuries are consistent with a fall from a great height, his body and clothing appear to have been washed, suggesting that he was seriously injured at another location before someone placed his body on the underpass. While an inquest jury rules that Peter's death was murder, there are no conclusive answers about who killed him or why he made a lengthy trip to London to begin with. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a truly baffling mystery from the United Kingdom about a victim who wound up dead at a location they had no known connection to. Find out more on our website: https://bit.ly/3qqw1TY This webinar presentation will highlight Birkbeck's history and its importance to working Londoners in its near 200 year history. The history is important to understand in the context of more contemporary policy challenges such as how the London workforce can be reskilled after the covid pandemic, the emerging Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), and London's post Brexit future. Professor Latchman will go on to give an overview of specific measures currently being considered by the UK Government such as the Augar Review of Post 18 Education, the Skills and Post 16 Bill, and ‘Levelling Up' and what all of this means for employees and businesses in London. Speaker: Professor David Latchman has been Vice-Chancellor of Birkbeck since 2003. His advocacy for lifelong learning has resulted in further funding for part-time students and the universities that serve them. These include fee and maintenance loans being made available to part-time undergraduate and postgraduate students and the raising of eligibility for such assistance to 60 years of age– a raise of 30 years on the previous upper age limit. During his time at Birkbeck, he has overseen significant development of the College's estate including the research facility of the Wohl Wolfson Toddler Lab and enhanced teaching facilities at 373 Euston Road. The most recent acquisition is the former University of London owned Student Central Building. This is scheduled to re-open in 2024 and will result in the further enhancement of existing teaching, learning and student social space. Birkbeck has continually been rated highly in successive government research and teaching assessment exercises and there has been a significant increase in income from philanthropic sources. Professor Latchman has published extensively in the field of Genetics and Molecular Biology and also has significant experience of the commercial exploitation of intellectual property, having obtained Venture Capital funding to found a Company (BioVex Ltd) on the basis of patents developed by his laboratory in the area of gene therapy. The Company was subsequently acquired by Amgen Ltd and its viral vector is now used in an approved treatment for patients with melanoma. Professor Latchman was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2010 for his services to Higher Education.

Youth unemployment at the UK rose sharply after the economic crash and remains stubbornly high. There are fears this could be leading to another ‘lost generation’ of Britain’s youth. Camden Council’s apprenticeship team are dedicated to helping young people into work. In Spring/Summer 2013 they ran an initiative called ‘Camden 100 in 100’. The idea was to create one-hundred apprenticeships in the borough in one-hundred days.
