At the moment you can't move in the shops for sales of Pumpkins, and all kinds of Hallowe'en outfits – such as masks, witches' hats, and luminous skeletons. It's being reported that spending on Hallowe'en is expected this year to surpass the billion pound mark. Come Hallowe'en there'll be the trick or treat ring of the doorbell, and spooky parties serving foul-looking broth, witches' fingers and graveyard chocolate cake. But as far as the church is concerned, there's little or no engagement except perhaps for a so-called Light Party. Rosa Hunt takes a broader look at Hallowe'en. We hear about the history of bonfire celebrations on October 31st which stretch back to pre-Christian times; in Wales “Nos Calan Gaeaf” had both agricultural and spiritual significance. We ask why many in the church have little or nothing to do with Hallowe'en. As far as popular stories like the Harry Potter books or Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' are concerned, the church has sometimes been accused of keeping such fantastical story lines at arm's length. We consider why. And amidst all the Hallowe'en trick & treating, can all the fun tip over into something more sinister? Rosa's guests this week are: Sergeant Sue Carrington, a crime prevention police officer based in north Wales. Revd Dr Rob Beamish, a school chaplain and Baptist minister based in Colwyn Bay. Mandy Bayton, Director of Evangelism, Church in Wales. Twm Elias, Welsh author who has written a written a book about festivals during the year including “Nos Calan Gaeaf”. Revd Canon Dr Jason Bray, Vicar of St Giles's Parish Church Wrexham and a Deliverance Minister.

In a special series by the Sgorio podcast we trace the history of our national league, and the eight clubs that were called to return to Wales in 1992. We will hear from the fans and players who were there at the time, we will follow the story of the eight clubs up to this day, and ask what the future holds in store. In the first chapter, the historian Mei Emrys sets the context. Why did clubs from Wales play in England in the first place? What leagues existed for the clubs playing in the domestic system here? Why change the system at the beginning of the 90s, and introduce the first all-Wales league? Thanks to all the contributors to the series for their time - this is their story.

The Houghton Weavers have been entertaining folk for 47 years with their unique blend of popular folk music, humour and audience participation and they announce their annual forthcoming Autumn / Winter 2022 UK Tour. The North West's leading comedy/folk group will visit towns and cities such as Colwyn Bay, Morecambe, Darwen, Preston, Lytham St Anne's, Blackpool and Buxton. To coincide with their UK Tour, they release their brand-new single, 'Wild Mountain Thyme' on Friday 7th October, taken from their forthcoming album 'New World in the Morning' due out on Friday 14th October. "To us, this traditional Scottish Folk Song depicts the love that Queen Elizabeth II had for the beautiful Scottish Highlands. It could almost be a signature to her love and time spent north of the border. It's such a poignant and beautiful traditional song and it seems a perfect track as our tribute to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Having been working on the album for almost 2 years, through covid and into the summer of 2022, It's a mixture of self-penned and traditional songs as well as some very well-known folk covers. We have used various session musicians including Ken Nichol of Steeleye Span and the wonderful country folk guitarist Pete Frampton. The album has that Weavers comedy element but is brought back down to earth with some beautifully poignant trad folk songs. We are dedicating this album to our late Tony Berry who sadly passed away in 2019." The Houghton Weavers have been entertaining folk up and down the country and promise a fun-packed, sing-along family show with great music and funny stories galore! There will be plenty of laughter and the old familiar songs like the Blackpool Belle, Matchstalk Men and Wild Rover mixed together with some new songs, and festive perennial favourites on the Christmas Tour like Let It Snow, Bless Your Whiskers and White Christmas. Learning their craft in the folk clubs of their native North West, the group have never wavered from their original motto of "Keep Folk Smiling". Steve Millington, David Littler and Jim Berry entertain their audiences in a show of charming fun, humorous jokes, and anecdotes, together with plenty of music, varying from raucous traditional and popular Folk Songs to sing-along favourites, with beautiful ballads and original pieces included throughout. Their wide and varied repertoire and unique and well-known style ensure that no two shows in the company of The Houghton Weavers are ever the same. The band continue their non-stop success with a packed schedule of theatres and other venues, also hosting two residential weekends a year. With a large and active fan club, and growing social media following, The Houghton Weavers enjoy entertaining those young and old in a show designed for all the family to enjoy. In their time together, the band have performed thousands of concerts, recorded over 30 albums and starred in several of their own highly successful BBC radio and TV series and made countless appearances on other programmes. They guarantee a wonderful afternoon / evening of entertainment and their experience – together with their style and professionalism – ensures that, as their motto says, they always "Keep Folk Smiling". January 18, 1976. Colwyn Bay, Wales. The family of 15-year old Peter Watts returns to their residence and discovers he has left behind a note to say that he went to see a friend. Ten hours later, Peter's unconscious body is discovered on the Euston Road underpass in London over 250 miles away and he dies after being rushed to the hospital. While Peter's injuries are consistent with a fall from a great height, his body and clothing appear to have been washed, suggesting that he was seriously injured at another location before someone placed his body on the underpass. While an inquest jury rules that Peter's death was murder, there are no conclusive answers about who killed him or why he made a lengthy trip to London to begin with. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a truly baffling mystery from the United Kingdom about a victim who wound up dead at a location they had no known connection to. During the 1930s George Lavis (Vol.2, p155-158) had led the team after they had been invited to sing on stage at several seaside resorts. Their repertoire before the Second World War always featured a number of traditional Welsh melodies, but by the 1960s and 1970s the sing-songs included a series of West Indian calypsos, thanks to the input of Tony Cordle, the Club's first overseas fast bowler with the Bajan long after retiring from playing, continuing to delight with his lilting voice – albeit in Canada! Tony was brought up in the Deacon's Housing Area, just outside Bridgetown and played a decent standard of club cricket in Barbados. His half-brother Frank King had been a Test fast bowler, whilst his father had captained a strong team in the Barbados Cricket League competition. However, Tony was still a novice as far as cricket was concerned when, shortly after his 21st birthday, he decided to follow the example of his older brother Steve and move to the United Kingdom. He initially worked for London Transport, but after ten days – “the most frightening ten days of my life” he later admitted – he decided to move to Cardiff where his brother and sister were now based. A few days later, he went to the Labour Exchange in Westgate Street ostensibly to secure a job with British Railways. Whilst t walking up the stairs he looked out on the Arms Park cricket ground. “I saw the green turf and the scoreboard – the first friendly sights I had seen in Britain.” Having fond memories of playing cricket in Barbados, Tony contacted Cardiff CC, little realising that his decision in February 1962 would dramatically transform his life. Wyndham Lewis, the Cardiff secretary, was soon impressed – so were Wilf Wooller and Phil Clift, the captain and coach respectively of Glamorgan's 2nd XI and later that summer Tony made his debut for Glamorgan's second string, claiming four wickets against Warwickshire at Ebbw Vale. After a clutch of wickets in club cricket, besides frightening opponents with his sheer pace and fast arm, Tony received further coaching from the Glamorgan staff, plus captain Ossie Wheatley who taught him important lessons about variations of pace and swing. “I could spray it around at first, “ he admitted. “Direction and getting things right against the professionals used to worry me, but I cut down a bit on pace and learnt how to move the ball around both ways. I worked at it endlessly until it all came right. It was then I realized that bowling quick was not everything and that made me a more effective bowler. “ He could still however produce an express delivery and one of his happiest recollections in a Glamorgan sweater had been clean bowling Hampshire's Barry Richards almost before the great South African batsman could pick his bat up! He agreed professional terms with Glamorgan for 1963, although he continued to work in the shunting yards a

In all probability somebody not so far from you is living in slavery, and if you use a mobile phone or a computer then the likelihood is that you have benefitted from slave labour across the globe. Roy Jenkins investigates this growing problem in Wales and the wider world, and asks what faith communities are doing to address it. Taking part in the programme are the UK's former anti-trafficking commissioner Kevin Hyland; Ali Ussery, founder of the Colwyn Bay organisation Haven of Light; Kathy Betteridge, Director of Anti-trafficking and Modern Slavery at the Salvation Army; and photographer and youth pastor Jane Lasonder, who is based in Penarth. Research published last month has indicated that a quarter of UK adults has watched or listened to a religious service since the Covid 19 lockdown began, many for the first time ever. Across the country, people have flocked to various online platforms to take part in services, pray together, and share their faith: many churches have seen their attendance figures far exceed those they had pre-lockdown. Church members and leaders have had to learn a whole range of skills, and adapt during the present crisis to an entirely new kind of church: online church. Some might see this as a step which is long overdue; improving access to services, and catching up with today’s technology. Others might struggle to participate, whether because of costs or technical ability – or just a feeling that online church isn’t really church at all. So why are so many people joining these services – and can a virtual faith experience really connect a community? Jonathan Thomas is a busy South Wales pastor who's had to adapt his own services to an online world. Joining him to discuss the issues are: In Merthyr, catholic priest Father Christopher Hancock, who has attracted online congregations of a thousand people for his live-streamed masses; in Colwyn Bay, Rev Dr Robert Beamish, Baptist minister who in 2018 published a book called preaching in times of crisis and who has researched preaching in a digital context; and in Plymouth, speaker writer and theologian Tanya Marlow, who has been housebound for 10 years with severe M.E.

There's still a base to build towards a big game away at Edinburgh this Friday night though, while Cardiff RFC return to action ahead of a packed two-month run to the end of the season at which we could be winners of the double. Elsewhere, Wales pass up an opportunity to get the win against France, the U20s put in a serious shift up at Colwyn Bay and Robo Mulvers comes over all Churchillian, although he maintains he is original.

It's all about Change. As Dave Anderson changes direction with his Chertsey Town team to seek league focus ahead of their Wembley cup final, Dave and Tim Fuell speak with three clubs where change has been good. First up Gary Johnson returns to the show. After taking charge at Torquay United in September he has led the club to the top of the table in the National League South. On Saturday they travel to second placed Woking knowing an away win would leave them 10 points clear. Des Flanders faced imposed change as Chairman of Met Police FC last summer who were moved from the Isthmian League into the Southern League. Financial fears threaten their future and their long-term manager resigned as did many of the squad, but less than a year on the club is going from strength to strength and gunning for the play-offs. Currently third in the Southern League Premier South, they travel to second-placed Taunton Town this weekend. Colwyn Bay have had a dramatic last month. New board members and a switch from the English Pyramid to the Welsh league system have all been mooted and agreed. Manager Craig Hogg has embraced the new project and been rewarded with a 5 year contract, he explains why he thinks it is the club will now be able to thrive. Online Editor at The Non League Paper David Richardson discusses how a week is a long time at the top of the National League and the irony of Gateshead and Ebbsfleet United meeting in league action this week with both clubs' sets of fans unclear of what the future holds. Plus the Step 4 side resigning despite a mid-table finish in their first year up from Step 5 and the club parting ways with their manager with play-offs assured.

Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

This week it is a privilege to interview Canon Dr. William Price who taught me when I was an undergraduate student in the University of Wales in the early 1990s. William Price was born in Colwyn Bay and went to Lampeter in 1970 as a History lecturer, and stayed until 1997. He now lives in Wem, Shropshire. His father was a curate and William read History at Keble College, Oxford. In this hugely insightful conversation he talks about how he was attracted by Lampeter’s Anglican tradition and saw the job as a chance to revive his Welsh. We talk about how Lampeter is a unique town and William recounts how at one point he knew every academic colleague by name. We learn what William’s earliest memories are, which include walking by the sea during the terrible winter of early 1947 and the birth of his sister. He also remembers his first day at school and he relays what he said to his mother at the end of that first day. We find out why, at the age of 8, his village school said that they couldn’t teach him any more, and William talks about the role that piano music played in his youth. He also played the organ in church, and indeed sometimes still does to this day. He has no interest whatsoever in sports and recalls that TV was the main form of entertainment when he was growing up. His parents had one of the first TVs in the village and he remembers watching the Queen’s coronation in 1953. Before TV, radio was an influence, and William discusses how he recently found an old diary from 1954 which recounts how he used to listen to ‘The Archers’ and ‘Dan Dare’ as a child. William was also keen on railways and enjoyed trainspotting. He also remembers travelling on the last train to go through Lampeter in the early 1970s. At school, his History teachers inspired him and we learn why his ‘O’ level Art teacher summed up his ‘O’ level as the triumph of intellect over ability. At ‘A’ level William studied History, French and Geography and he tells us why his life would have been different if he had been two years younger as he would then have done Modern Languages and might have gone on to do French and Russian at University. William read History at Keble College. In his first term at Oxford, in October 1962, there was the threat of nuclear war due to the Cuban Missile Crisis, and William explains why his biggest University ‘hero’ (seeing him as a genius and a saint) was Austin Farrer. William discusses how he would like him to be commemorated in the calendar of the Church of England. We learn whether William’s memories are predominantly positive and he discusses how he has ‘ridden two horses’ in the respect that for 25 years he held twin academic and clerical professions. William reflects on what might have happened if he had ridden just one horse. We learn which of the two professions he ultimately chose and why he has no regrets about the choices he has made. In the final part of the interview we learn why if he had his time again he would make the same choices and we discover why William is mentally very curious, is a looking forward type of person and why his family is at the centre of his life. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and William Price and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

Beginning in the 1990s, Roache began a career in film while remaining active in television and stage. In 1994, he received acclaim for his leading role in Antonia Bird's Priest. He is best known to US audiences as Dr. Thomas Wayne, father of Batman, in Batman Begins (2005) or as Executive Assistant District Attorney Michael Cutter in the American TV series Law & Order (2008–2010) and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2011–2012). In June 2010, it was announced that he would return to play Laurence Cunningham, alongside his father William Roache, in Coronation Street. In July 2010, he was cast in the HBO pilot The Miraculous Year. In April 2011, Roache was cast as the lead in the ITV mini-series Titanic, airing March–April 2012 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the ship. In February 2014, Roache debuted in season two of the popular TV series Vikings as England's King Ecbert. He is currently filming season 7 of Homeland, where he plays White House Chief of Staff, David Wellington. Show notes: http://www.inspiredmoney.fm/007 Links Homeland Coronation Street Linus Roache (IMDb) In this episode, you will learn: How to prepare for a performance. We non-actors can event benefit by these insights and routines because life is a grand performance! How you should not tie your self-worth to your work. We'll explore all sorts of things like wealth, fulfillment, and happiness. Linus is not just a great actor but after hitting many of his professional goals by age 30, he began to wonder if this is it? He took a break and explored the spiritual aspect of life that included meditating for at least 2 hours a day! So we'll explore this too. I think it's totally relevant because being healthy includes physical health, mental health, spiritual health, and financial health. Thanks for Listening!
