Join us for a thought-provoking conversation with Amber Massie-Blomfield, author of Acts of Resistance: The Power of Art to Create a Better World. This conversation, recorded in store, dives into the profound role art plays in times of crisis. Amber shares stories of artists who defied oppressive regimes, like Claude Cahun's surrealist resistance in Nazi-occupied Jersey and Susan Sontag's production of Waiting for Godot during the siege of Sarajevo. We explore how art inspires activism, questions societal norms, and fosters collective resilience. From daring theatrical productions to sunflower-lined streets, Amber reveals art's transformative potential to unite and inspire. Whether you're an artist, activist, or curious thinker, this episode challenges the notion that art is “just” entertainment and posits it as a force for meaningful change.Buy Acts of Resistance: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/acts-of-resistance*Amber Massie-Blomfield's first book, Twenty Theatres to See Before You Die, was published by Penned in the Margins in May 2018, and received the Society of Authors' Michael Meyer Award. Helena Ascough is a spoken word artist, actor and writer from the North East. Her play ‘No Future' is a punk-inspired exploration of the trials and tribulations of being a visually impaired person within the British education system, both as a teacher and as a child. Jasmin Thien is an actor and stand-up comic. Her play ‘I Dream in Colour' explores memory, loss, and the intersection between disability and culture, drawn from Jasmin's experiences growing up fighting eye cancer and eventually blindness as a Bruneian-born Chinese person. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with Helena and Jasmin to firstly find out more about how the Extant Associate Artist Project has helped them both with developing their theatrical skills. Toby then asked Helena and Jasmin to explain a bit more about the background to their two solo shows 'No Future' and ‘I Dream of Colour', where the idea for both shows came from and what they would like both visually impaired and sighted audiences to gain from seeing their shows.  ‘No Future' by Helena Ascough and ‘I Dream in Colour' by Jasmin Thien are on at the Camden People's theatre as part of the Sprint Festival on Monday 27 March 2023 at 7.15pm and you can either call the Camden People's Theatre Box Office on 020 7419 4841 to book your tickets or visit their website for more details- https://cptheatre.co.uk/whatson/Extant-Presents-2023 There is also details about Helena's and Jasmin's solo shows on the Extant website where you will also find more information about the Associate artists project and all of Extant's great work supporting blind and partially sighted theatre makers- https://extant.org.uk/productions/extant-presents-no-future-i-dream-in-colour/ Image Shows: The Extant logo, stylised in purple capital letters with six dots to the left and the same formation as braille. In today's episode, we are pleased to share with you our very first radio play. The play we will be sharing with you today is called Gravity and it was written by Katie Caden. Caden is an alumnus of Soho Writers Lab and has had her work performed at Vault festival, the Bunker Theatre, Southwark Playhouse, Theatre 503, Camden People's Theatre and Battersea Arts Centre. Her last show 'Paper Straws', produced by her theatre company PearShaped, won the Vault Origins award and her first play 'Are You Happy Now' was shortlisted for Lyric Hammersmith's Original Theatre Voices competition. Caden's writing explores contemporary issues, and interrogates the way we live our lives today, experimenting with form and often using humour as a way to communicate serious issues. She writes to understand other people, and herself, exploring why we behave in the way we do? Why do we make poor decisions and repeat our mistakes? And what drives us to hurt each other or conversely express our love? Writing 'Gravity' in response to Unfeeling, the theme for this year's issue, allowed Caden to consider these things and, in particular, how people can express their love through their actions whilst saying they don't care, and conversely how we can tell people we love them and then behave like we don't. All the characters battle with these impulses and the push and pull between feeling too much and feeling nothing at all. Alongside this, Caden has included technology almost as an extra character, interfering with these dynamics, pulling attention away from the situation at hand, and impacting the characters' ability to feel to the fullest extent. Louise Ashcroft is an artist who makes video, performance, audio, watercolours and objects which humorously chronicle her critical meddling in  real life situations. Often, her work involves analysing cultural content (like the Argos catalogue, call centres, tech culture, the reproductive industry or breakfast cereal marketing). She has made several audio works for BBC Sounds and has spoken at leading digital arts festivals such as KIKK and Chaos Computer Congress. She has presented work at Frans Hals Museum (NL), Museum of London Lates, Wellcome Lates, BQ Berlin, Arebyte, Bobinska Brownlee, Tate Learning, Open Space Contemporary, Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Artsadmin, Turf Projects, Duckie, Coastal Currents Festival, Camden People's Theatre, Supernormal Festival and Latitude Festival. She teaches Fine Art at Goldsmiths, London, and co-founded the free peer-led art school AltMFA in 2010. She likes expensive trainers and angry Marxist rhetoric.Louise says"My work looks at barriers to starting a family as a queer woman, and the personal relationships that are in play in these decisions. We need to be rethinking social structures of parenting, not always going down the ‘nuclear' style family and gender binary structures. I didn't want to be a parent or non parent in a relationship, I just want to be involved in a family! How can someone parent without being a traditional ‘having a baby' parent?Childfree by choice is a movement focused on choice, which can be problematic. Choice is a very loaded word, but is also a word that capitalism is based on. Having kids or not is not always a choice for people. Like for me, but then that means you can explore different ways to be ‘family', which can be equally exciting."Useful linkshttps://www.louiseashcroft.org/bird-hut.htmlInsta @louiseashcroft1

Greetings, bonjour, what's happening? How we doing? So this week I've started work back on Make Your Own bed and Hope for the Best; which is a solo theatre show about my experiences of employment. I started developing it back in 2019 – To be honest its become a bit of a labour of love, which is ironic, considering the subject matter but I'm determined to get it finished this year. It's been through various iterations, most of which you can see for yourself on my YouTube channel, where I've been documenting the process. The most recent incarnation was back last July, where I did two nights at Camden People's Theatre; as a full work-in-progress show. It went alright, all in all but I still wasn't happy with it. So I'm back playing with it again and have been re-working the stories, which form the core of the material. It's odd, the more I write this sort of stuff, the harder it seems to get.Last year, when I went through this process, I found it quite useful to share what I was doing online, I think it helped build up a little bit of interest, whilst helping me edit the work. I'm going to try and do something similar again but in cooperating the old Substack. Well, it's not old, is it?I gotta' say, I've been enjoying doing this though, putting things up on Lager Time. I think I will continue to put up various bits and bobs: poems, stories and thoughts; as well as the show material as I go back through it, until I find my stride with it.I've also been putting a bit of time in to get better at recording audio. I can be quite lazy with that kind of thing but at some point, I'd like to try my hand at voiceovers and the like, geezers gotta' eat somehow… and that seems another way to earn some much-needed spondoolies; so it's good practise for me. Maybe not recording right next to a window would be a good start in improving things.Large up all of you that have been supportive with it so far, I hope you're enjoying it, like I am. On a quick note, before we get into the material, there's two new books that have bene published this week, which are both very significant for me and my beats & Elements collaborators.Making Hip Hop Theatre Beatbox and Elements – by Conrad Murray and Katie Beswick &Beats and Elements: A Hip Hop Theatre TrilogyThe former is the go-to guide, on making hip hop theatre, alongside interviews and the latter, is three plays, No Milk For The Foxes, Denmarked and High Rise eState of Mind. Two of which I co-wrote. It's nuts to see both the work and process in print. We made most of this stuff from nothing. They're both published by Methuen Drama and are available at all good book stores.PAPER-BOYApart from that job I got licking stamps for a mate of my dad's; some primitive spam-operation for a charter flight company, in the Gatwick metro centre, when I was about nine, the first proper paid gig I got was being a Sunday paper boy, for Smith's Newsagents, Horley, in Surrey where I grew up. 12 years old man and boy (northern accent )My brother Will's mate, Mark, had originally held that paper- round but he'd graduated from Sunday Paper-Boy to that coveted role of Saturday assistant in Smiths. He phoned up Will one day and asked Will if wanted the vacant round. Will asked mum and dad.  Dad said he can only do it, if he split the round with it me. So through a blatant case of nepotism and state intervention, I got my first job, in partnership with my brother Will. I was a working man… boy.Few months into doing it and Will also got a Saturday job and in what I now view in retrospect, as an aggressive cooperate take-over of the partnership, the whole round become solely mine. Yes. The whole £3. 300pence, all for, me.Getting up early is tough, especially when it's dark, cold and wet and the only people about: are dog-walkers, odd balls, airport workers and casualties from the night before. But I get to ride my bike really fast through the subway the empty high-street, pulling little wheelies. Each week I'd sit on the steps of the British Legion, at the start of the round and scan the back of the tabloids for the Millwall match reports form Saturdays games and any other football news as well any pictures I can find of semi-naked women .Increasingly I began to take note of the front pages too. Politicians, commentators, journalists; who are these people and why are they always in scandals?I'd listen to my Walkman, really loud. Missioning it between the streets; compilation tapes, hip hip, grunge, jungle, metal and whatever else my older siblings fed me. I learnt which houses I had to have special requirements for, paper under the mat, top letter-box only. The ones which the crazy dogs, which gaffs took the tabloids and which was took the broadsheets and would curse those ones for the sheer size of the papers in proportion to their tiny letter boxes. Who had time to read all of that? Each week I'd ride past the bike shop and look at all the sick bmx's and mountain bikes and try and work-out how many weeks paper-round wages it would take me to save for one. Adds up with fingers And then I'd quicky abandon that calculation because I hate maths and it would probably take me years, anyway.I got good at this job and I was reliable; that's what Mr Smith said to me one day.  He started giving me extra rounds when the other kids were off sick or on holiday, which meant more dough, which brings me to the best bit in all of this; riding back to the shop, when I finished the round and Mr Smith pressing that magic button to open the till, sliding out the dough, then placing those solid, grubby, heavy, gold nuggets; three of the queens finest English pounds, right into my sweaty-palm.I'd look at it, enjoy the weight of it. Then I'd always have that brief moment, like Gollum in the Lord of the Rings where Gollum's his eyes bulge at the sight at the ring. I'd get this sudden urge to buy things, stickers, sweets, magazines, newspapers, greetings-cards, stationary, paper-plates and party poppers, napkins and ladies tights. I wanted it all! Right there and then!Sometimes I would spank the lot, right then and then, on sweets and stickers and whatever else, then regret it later on. But most of the time I didn't. Having the paper-round, meant I could pay for birthday and Christmas presents, and lynx deodorant and Oxy ten spot cream, that stuffs expensive and mum weren't buying it for me. I liked the feeling that I could pay for stuff, using money that I'd earnt.I'd ride home, say hello to mum and make myself a boiled egg with soldiers, then watch the Holyoaks Omnibus and I remember thinking to myself, if this is what working life is like, I'm alright with that This is a public episode. SHAKARA CARTER Shakara Carter Shakara is an actress in training at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, due to graduate in September 2021. Her first solo work - Triptych - recently launched on RCS@Home is a darkly comedic nod to the often-unfathomable forces at play within and around us, and the irreconcilable truth of what makes us flawed and lovable in equal measure. As a puppeteer she has worked with Nickelodeon, The Little Angel Theatre, Folded Feather and DNA Puppetry. No Milk for the Foxes was a one-act play written and performed by Conrad Murray and Paul Cree for Beats & Elements at Camden People’s Theatre in 2015 that looked in on the lives of two young, working-class lads, Marx and Sparx, working as security guards on zero-hours contracts and which used beatboxing and live looping between dialogue scenes. An archive recording of this production has now been made available on YouTube in order, according to Conrad, to introduce some diversity into the huge amount of online theatre that has suddenly become available by throwing some working class voices into the mix. BTG Editor David Chadderton spoke to Conrad about the play, about beatboxing and hip hop theatre and about his views on the importance of seeing genuine working class characters on stage, even if they don’t fit the preconceptions and sensibilities of the middle classes—even if they read The Sun. No Milk for the Foxes is now available on the Beats & Elements page on YouTube, where you can also find a link to make donations via Patreon. You can find out more about Conrad on his web site.

The play, presented by Unlimited and Big Feast, is based on interviews with over 80 people and in it, Jackie examines the impact of benefit cuts on disabled people and others on the margins of society. Perhaps predictably, considering the theme of this work, we discuss class - a lot. More specifically, when the idea of class entered Jackie’s consciousness and the effect it had on her gall bladder and mental health. Podcast Show Notes: Episode 20 Intro: Hello everyone, and welcome to the 20th episode of Tobi’s Arts Performed Podcast. I am your host Tobi. In this 2nd part of Seb’s interview we return to the ideas of live art verses performance art. Also we digress into the realm of social cleansing by what Seb calls the local government’s “art washing”, or co-opting grass roots art to justify gentrification. We also go back to his performance, La Santa Muerte, leading us back to issues of the place of capitalism in Mexico, and Mexican immigrants in America. As a brief reminder, Seb is performing at the Camden People’s Theatre on the 17th of March along with other artists & performers so please look up the facebook link here: Starting Bloks or The Camden People’s Theatre website for details.   Outro: Its always a pleasure talking with Seb about his work and his heritage. There’s so much I can learn about both and I will be returning at some point in the future to talk to him about his future projects, but please remember he is performing at the Camden people’s theatre in Starting Blocks, with other artists and performers. Next week’s episode is with fellow podcaster, story teller, and author of his new book Mansplaining Masculinity, Dave Pickering. This book is taken from a podcast he did, where; dressed in a purple dress, fedora hat, and holding his old dolphin toy, he tackles the subject of masculinity, directing his rhetoric toward men. His other podcasts include Getting Better Acquainted, a show he’s been doing for over 6 years. His next episode featuring a certain me, will be published this Wednesday, where is talks to me about my podcast. It’s not as meta as it sounds but we did interview each other on the same day.
