In October 2022 at the age of 20, Laura McEvoy from Northern Ireland was involved in a devastating car accident that changed her life forever, leaving her with a spinal cord injury at L1, fractured vertebrae in her neck, and a cracked skull. Told she might never walk again, Laura refused to accept defeat. Through sheer determination and the unwavering support of her family and friends, she defied the odds rebuilding her life step by step facing life's toughest challenges with remarkable resilience and passion. A former competitive Irish dancer and outdoor enthusiast, Laura found her way back to the activities she loved and discovered new passions along the way. From learning to walk again with crutches and AFOs to abseiling and climbing the iconic Rathlin Wall at Fairhead, she has redefined what it means to overcome adversity. Today, Laura is a passionate advocate for accessible outdoor adventure, working with organisations including; Mountaineering Ireland, Tollymore, and Accessible Adventures Ireland to create inclusive opportunities in climbing, paddle sports and hiking. She's raised thousands for The Outdoor Partnership, earned multiple climbing qualifications, and is now leading the way in organising major inclusive and adaptive expeditions, this past weekend she was part of a paddling and camping adventure on Lough Erne. As if that wasn't enough, Laura is also making her mark on the court as a wheelchair basketball athlete for Northern Ireland, with her sights set firmly on the Commonwealth Games in 2026. Her motto, "Say yes to everything," captures the spirit of a woman who isn't just surviving trauma she's thriving and inspiring others to believe that their limits are only the starting point.
In this episode of Learning Can't Wait, we sit down with Mary Jo Fairhead, Founder and Director of Onward Learning, to explore the unique strengths of rural education and the importance of redefining student success. Mary Jo shares how small, tight-knit communities foster deep collaboration and resourcefulness, creating learning environments where students can thrive at their own pace. She challenges the overreliance on standardized testing, offering real-world examples of students excelling when given the freedom to progress based on their individual needs rather than rigid benchmarks. Host Hayley Spira-Bauer and Mary Jo discuss the broader implications of rethinking traditional educational norms, from the role of homework to the fear-based mindset that often dictates student progress. With a refreshing perspective on what truly matters in learning, Mary Jo encourages educators to be courageous in advocating for student-centered approaches. Tune in for an inspiring conversation that challenges assumptions and highlights the power of community-driven education.

Tie on to the rope of artist and climber Dan Shipsides to go sea cliff climbing at Fairhead on the north Antrim coast of Northern Ireland. For Dan climbing and art feed into one another in unexpected and complimentary ways - both are creative acts - appreciative of aesthetics and beauty. Also joining us on the climb will be Derry-born dancer Zoe Ramsey. She was introduced to the sport by Dan and was instantly hooked. While their climbing styles might be as different as the art they create both see parallels between what they do in the studio and what they do on the rockface. Moving, balancing and extending for Zoe, drawing a line through a vertical landscape for Dan. With the jangle of the metal wedges they use to protect their ascent hanging from their climbing harnesses and the 'thwip' of the rope running out we join the pair as they inch their way up the cliff face with the Irish sea roaring far below in a journey from the deep blue of the water to the pale blue of the sky. J., Heer Abstract: Herein we provide a living summary of the data generated during the COVID Moonshot project focused on the development of SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro) inhibitors. Our approach uniquely combines crowdsourced medicinal chemistry insights with high throughput crystallography, exascale computational chemistry infrastructure for simulations, and machine learning in triaging designs and predicting synthetic routes. This manuscript describes our methodologies leading to both covalent and non-covalent inhibitors displaying protease IC50 values under 150 nM and viral inhibition under 5 uM in multiple different viral replication assays. Furthermore, we provide over 200 crystal structures of fragment-like and lead-like molecules in complex with the main protease. Over 1000 synthesized and ordered compounds are also reported with the corresponding activity in Mpro enzymatic assays using two different experimental setups. The data referenced in this document will be continually updated to reflect the current experimental progress of the COVID Moonshot project, and serves as a citable reference for ensuing publications. In 2014 Professor James Fairhead's research played a crucial role in responding to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. An epidemic with many similarities to the current Covid 19 pandemic, Ebola threatened both the physical and social body of the infected regions. In this episode of the Impacted podcast we hear about how understanding Human behaviour and cultural motivation is an essential part of mitigating the spread of any disease. James Fairhead is a Professor Of Social Anthropology at the University of Sussex. His research focuses on environmental and medical anthropology and he has conducted extensive fieldwork principally in West and Central Africa. The researcher would like to further thank all those involved in the Ebola Response Anthropology Platform, including Professor Melissa Leach (@IDS), Melissa Parker (@ the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine), and Dominique Millimouno for his research scoping exercise that ERAP supported.
SharQ Talk #74 has been recorded live in Poppodium Volt, the place where I work as a booker and marketeer. So the venues in the Netherlands are limited to a new "max" capacity, 30 people. Which giving the bands and locations a new challenge to set up concerts and events. At Volt we are lucky that we can stay open and give (new) acts a place on this amazing stage. Looking for new acts my path crossed with Will Fairhead and the Gulls because of the drummer, Bob, he called me up and asked if he could play at our stage. Of course we are open for great ideas, especially in this day and age. They should have been our "seasonal opener" but with the new limits in the UK we couldn't push that thru, so after a while we decided to try it once more. "The Impossible Tour pt.2" had begun, a wild road trip by the band going to mainland Europa with a sold out show in Sittard in front of them. This is the story of a band who needs to be on tour and finding out what is possible during these impossible times. Have a great listen and if you want to look them up check out the pages below. Inspirational quotes from today’s interview: “There’s three places every American should go to. Washington DC, Normandy and the Kennedy Space Center.” - Brian Buffini “We had to get under Neil’s skin. He had all these amazing achievements. He was an action hero in his own way.” – David Fairhead “He was a very unique character...He was all about the technique and the skill and the adventure and the exploring of it...On top of that, he was an extraordinarily quiet reserved guy.” – Brian Buffini “It’s not all about the flag waving. Neil was a reserved person; he was somebody from a different era.” - David Fairhead “There were 400,000 people behind him to put him and Buzz on the moon, and he did not want to take credit for that achievement.” - David Fairhead “[Neil] was portrayed popularly by the press as being a recluse…He was not a recluse. He was a very busy man, and he was warm, and he was open, and yes, he was funny.” – David Fairhead “Neil was in a shell. But if you could break that shell by talking to him about something that he was interested in, suddenly he’d be your best friend.” – David Fairhead “If you’re doing the best you can at whatever you do, then you’re doing well.” – David Fairhead “It’s about staying focused and doing the job to the best of your ability, and that’s what Neil did.” – David Fairhead “He was cool under pressure. He just did the job. He wasn’t afraid.” – Brian Buffini “[The interview with Neil] is the highlight of my career. I’ve never had anything like it, and I doubt I’ll ever have anything like it again.” – Brian Buffini “It was like sitting down on the floor at your grandfather’s house while he told you stories. People were just awed.” – Brian Buffini “The Apollo Program was set up to challenge the Russian’s dominance and to achieve a goal set by a president. And it did that…All these things lined up, and all these amazing things were achieved.” - David Fairhead “We're going to put a man on the moon. We’re going to bring him back safely to earth. And then we’re going to do it by the end of the decade. That was the most perfect goal.” – Neil Armstrong “Every night we looked up and saw the moon in front of us. We saw our goal in front of us, so that made it real clear.” – Neil Armstrong Mentioned in this episode: “Armstrong” – Documentary “Last Man on the Moon” – Documentary “In the Shadow of the Moon” – Documentary Brian Buffini Interviews Neil Armstrong – MasterMind 2002 Connect with Brian Buffini http://www.brianbuffini.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brianbuffini Twitter: https://twitter.com/brianbuffini Buffini Show Insiders: http://www.thebrianbuffinishow.com/insiders Love what you heard? Some weeks ago, Sir David Clementi said the current regulatory model of the BBC Trust, was 'flawed and that a unitary board should run the BBC. Since then, John Whittingdale, the culture secretary, has said if board members were appointed by the government, that this would not compromise the independence of the BBC. However, the current chair of the BBC Trust, Rona Fairhead, has concerns. Steve Hewlett talks to her about whether the Clementi model is really the best model, the importance of the BBC retaining its independence, and why she thinks the White Paper on the future of the BBC, initially due out in March, needs to be published as soon as possible. A three page list of "tips for maximising your interview time" with the popstar will.i.am were given to journalists interviewing him recently, dictating what can and cannot be discussed, and offering advice for when to ask the most important questions. Is this level of involvement from celebrity PRs helpful or meddling in journalism? Steve Hewlett talks to Telegraph writer Harry Wallop who was the recipient of the 'tip' checklist. The Sun on Sunday has lost a court battle to print a story about a celebrity's alleged threesome on the grounds their children deserve protection. It's raised concerns amongst press freedom advocates that this defence will be used by claimants more frequently, and offer those with children carte blanche to act in any way they want, with immunity from press coverage. Steve Hewlett discusses the issues with lawyers Sara Mansoori from Matrix Chambers and Mark Stephens from Howard Kennedy. Plus, editor of the Press Gazette Dominic Ponsford explains his concerns about the potential impact on journalism. Prod: Katy Takatsuki.
Edward Stourton profiles Rona Fairhead, the woman nominated to replace Lord Patten as chair of the BBC Trust. She's a high achiever who excelled at school and in the world of business, but her nomination caught many by surprise. So who is she, and how will she fare in one of the BBC's toughest jobs?
Rona Fairhead, the former FT Group chief executive, has been announced as the Government's preferred choice as BBC Trust chair. Her nomination comes at a challenging time for the BBC, in the run up to Charter renewal and concerns over governance. Steve hears from John Gapper, former colleague, and Associate Editor of the Financial Times, about what she could bring to the role; former Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell MP, who introduced the BBC Trust as a system of governance, and Phil Harding, former BBC news editor and Controller of Editorial Policy, about what her appointment may mean for the Trust, and the BBC.The BBC and South Yorkshire Police appeared before MPs yesterday, regarding the search of Sir Cliff Richard's home in Berkshire. The police and the BBC cooperated with each other, which ended in the BBC having cameras and a helicopter at the singer's home when the police turned up to raid it. Hundreds of people complained about the footage. However, Chairman of the Commons Home Affairs Committee, Keith Vaz said the BBC had behaved, 'perfectly properly'. Steve Hewlett is joined by the BBC's head of newsgathering, Jonathan Munro, to discuss the operational decisions the organisation made. The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) will replace the Press Complaints Commission next week. The majority of the UK's national press has elected to be subject to its regulation. The Press Gazette is the latest to sign up, and it's understood that a decision will be made by the Guardian shortly. However, there's still concern that ISPO is not independent enough. Executive Director of Hacked Off Joan Smith, Press Gazette editor Dominic Ponsford, and former Guardian editor and Observer columnist Peter Preston, join Steve.Producer: Katy Takatsuki.
