In this episode, we continue our deep dive into the question: How do we know God exists? Today we will wrap up our discussion of St. Thomas Aquinas's Five Ways by analysing the Fourth Way (the argument from gradation/degree) and the Fifth Way (the argument from order). Aquinas' Five Ways are among the most famous arguments for the existence of God, and they have been hugely influential in the history of the Philosophy of Religion. They have also been at times misunderstood and misrepresented, so in this series, we're taking the time to delve deep and understand what, exactly, Aquinas is arguing. Donate via PayPalSupport us on Patreon!Contact the podcast: crashcoursecatholicism@gmail.com.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/crashcoursecatholicism/References and further reading/listening/viewing:Summa Theologiae Part 1, Question 2Summa Contra GentilesEdward Feser:Aquinas: A Beginner's GuideFive Proofs of the Existence of GodEmpirical science and the transcendentalsFour Causes and Five WaysRéginald Garrigou-Lagrange, The one God: a commentary on the first part of St. Thomas' Theological summa. The Thomistic Institute: St. Thomas Aquinas' Fifth Way & Arguments from Modern Science (Aquinas 101)St. Thomas' SIMPLEST Proof for the Existence of God (Aquinas 101)Thomas Joseph White #9: The Fifth Way (I, 2, 3)Thomas Joseph White #8: The Fourth Way (I, 2, 3)Why is the Fourth Way the LEAST Popular of St. Thomas' Five Ways? Modern scientists often dismiss Aquinas's Five Ways as being outdated, irrelevant, or even invalid. However, when properly understood, the Five Ways show a remarkable similarity to how we think and approach science and they provide profound insight into explaining the universe. In this episode, astrophysicist Jeff Zweerink and philosopher Kyle Keltz clear up some misconceptions about the Fifth Way and design arguments while also showing how scientific advances over the last four centuries provide strong support for the premises of the Fifth Way. The Fifth Way of Prayer When he was in the convent, our holy father Dominic would sometimes remain before the altar, standing erect without supporting himself or leaning upon anything. Often his hands would be extended before his breast in the manner of an open book; he would stand with great reverence and devotion as if reading in the very presence of God. Deep in prayer, he appeared to be meditating upon the words of God, and he seemed to repeat them to himself in a sweet voice. He regularly prayed in this way for it was Our Lord's manner as Saint Luke tells us: ". . . according to his custom he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to read" [Luke 4:16]. The psalmist also tells us that "Phinees stood up and prayed, and the slaughter ceased" [Ps. 105:30]. He would sometimes join his hands, clasping them firmly together before eyes filled with tears and restrain himself. At other times he would raise his hands to his shoulders as the priest does at Mass. He appeared then to be listening carefully as if to hear something spoken from the altar. If one had seen his great devotion as he stood erect and prayed, he would certainly have thought that he was observing a prophet, first speaking with an angel or with God himself, then listening, then silently thinking of those things which had been revealed to him. On a journey he would secretly steal away at the time for prayer and, standing, would immediately raise his mind to heaven. One would then have heard him speaking sweetly and with supreme delight some loving words from his heart and from the riches of Holy Scripture which he seemed to draw from the fountains of the Savior. The friars were very much moved by the sight of their father and master praying in this manner. Thus, having become more fervent, they were instructed in the way of reverent and constant prayer: "Behold as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of the handmaid are on the hands of her mistress . . ." [Ps. 122:2]. The post The Fifth Way – The Nine Ways of Prayer of St. Dominic appeared first on Discerning Hearts Catholic Podcasts.

This lecture discusses key ideas from the Medieval philosopher, theologian, and Dominican friar, Thomas Aquinas, and focuses on his Summa Theologiae, Prima Pars, q. 2. It focuses upon his discussion in article 2, bearing on whether God's existence can be proven or demonstrated by rational means at all. Thomas offers us five ways to argue for God's existence. The fifth way, a design argument, focuses on order and governance within the world, and argues to God as the governor or orderer of all things. Today we are talking about a 5th way of the 5 ways to help you stay more committed to your business, which is, Remember to Take Breaks.Keep in mind that you are not limitless. You are going to occasionally get burnt out, and you are going to get frustrated… just like everyone else. The important thing to remember is that it is okay to walk away and take a break when this happens. If you don't, you can dig yourself into a hole deep enough to consume all of your energy… and coming back from this hole is far more challenging. It is important to get away and ‘recharge' your batteries before you deplete yourself. Taking breaks to get rejuvenated needs to be a part of your plan and a commitment to yourself, so you can be the very best you need to be when it is required. To wrap up we have explored over the past 5 days - What Can You Do To Stay More Committed? When it comes to being committed, it is all about taking the first step. Commit to a single step, and then move onto the next one. Commit to your long-term goals, but don't let the whole picture overwhelm you. Taking each one of these 5 tips into consideration is a great way to get started on the path to establishing a greater commitment for your business, to yourself, and to your overall success. You WILL succeed, as long as you stay consistent and committed to your goals. For help in creating a success game plan that you are excited to execute so you can commit to your end goal, watch my Masterclass by going to https://bit.ly/Watch2023SuccessPlanning.  Want more from me, subscribe to my business success tips and resources Blog, by going to https://accountabilitycoach.com/blog.  Take advantage of the complimentary business tips and tools by joining the Free Silver Membership on https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/.    Want more from me, The Accountability Coach™, subscribe to more high-value content by looking for The Accountability Coach Podcast which you can find on most platforms and in most English-speaking countries. Saturday 29 July Chapter of Prayer: Prayer of Riders • Recap of those who are excused from the normal performance of the prayer (e.g. the one who is ill or the traveller) • Another type of situation where there is leeway in the performance of the prayer is the case of the Rider o Reason 1 o It could be that if the rider were to get off his riding animal he would not be able to mount it again o Or he fears that if he gets of his riding animal that he will fall behind his company or be subject to some danger • Narration that the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) led the prayer whilst still on his riding animal • A rider must still face towards the Qiblah, due to the verse of Allah “” (2:144) • Whatever you can do of the prayer then a Muslim should try to fulfil that, what one is restricted from doing due to his/her situation … • In these days, examples of being a rider would include being on an o Situations where the rider does not have much control  Aeroplane  Boat  Train o Situations where one has more freedom  Car (e.g. to stop and pray if it is safe) • Question about rain: what qualifies as enough rain for combining in congregation? • Question about driving to masjid during rain: should one go to mosque during rain if he has a car? Chapter of Prayer: The Fear Prayer • The prayer of Fear is ordained for: o When Muslims fear to be attacked whilst Praying as Allah states “… if you fear that those who disbelieve may disrupt [or attack] you...” (Surah An-Nisa: 101) o During permissible fighting (Jihad), Allah states “…those who disbelieve wish that you would weapons and your baggage so they could come down upon you in one [single] attack…” (Surah An-Nisa: 102) • Evidence for the Fear prayer is in the Quran and Sunnah • Imam Ahmed: “Five or Six ways of performing the fear prayer are authentically narrated about the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)” • Can be performed when one has fear, whether journeying or resident o If travelling, then the number of rakahs in the fear prayer is shortened e.g. 4 to 2 o If resident, then the number of rakahs cannot be shortened however the fear prayer itself can be prayed shortened • FIRST WAY: Hadith on the authority of Sahl Ibn Abu Hathmah Al-Ansari describing the fear prayer during the prophet’s time at the battle of Dhatur-Riqa o “One row lined up behind him (صلى الله عليه وسلم) while another row (lined up) facing the enemy. The prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) led the row that was with him in one rak’ah (unit of prayer), and he stayed in the standing posture while that row performed (another rak’ah) by themselves and went away, lining in the face of the enemy. The other group came and he (the Prophet) offered his remaining rak’ah with them, and then, remained sitting until they completed their prayer by themselves, and he then finished the prayer along with them” o Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim [to read SECOND, THIRD, FOURTH and FIFTH WAY go to AlhudaBolton.com] + Q&A NEXT WEEK insha Allah: Birmingham conference so NO LESSON insha Allah

Dave Brisbin | 2.22.15 The Fifth Way Series 12: “Nothing is more practical than finding God, than falling in Love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, whom you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in Love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.” I think Father Arrupe is dead on here. The Fifth Way is as different from the four ways as falling in love is from following traffic laws or the tax code. Laws and codes may keep us safe and secure, but will never get us to the thrilling, out of control-ness that we really desire in life. If you strip away everything we think we know theologically and legally and religiously, what is left at the bottom of the dogpile is Jesus simply asking us to fall in love as he has fallen in love—with life, with each other, with him and Father and spirit and the entire cruel, crazy, beautiful world.

Dave Brisbin | 2.15.15 The Fifth Way Series 11: Reacting to a statement made in a sermon the previous Sunday, a woman told me it was the first time she had not been “completely won over” by what I had to say, that she and her husband had had a very “lively” discussion about it on the way home. I told her that was great! That I would much rather have her disagree and think on it and discuss it rigorously and research it, than just say it was a “lovely sermon” and never think on it again. Truth is, approaching the Fifth Way of Jesus is only possible as more and more of our four ways mentality is stripped away, as we become willing to “sell” everything we think we have, think we know, in favor of the radical truth to which Jesus beckons. That means, if we're not being disturbed, we're not approaching the Fifth Way, but are still traveling the other four. The Fifth Way is never familiar, never settled, and never boring. Like the true adventure it is, it gives no guarantee of safety and flatly defies agenda and itinerary. Our sense of risk and anticipated loss is the disturbance that precedes the letting go of all to which we cling that will forever keep us from kingdom and presence and the Father Jesus knows so well.

Dave Brisbin | 2.18.15 The Fifth Way Series 10: When most people hear the title of this book, The Fifth Way, most immediately want to know what the first four ways are. Pretty insightful, because we really can't know the nature of Jesus' Fifth Way without understanding the nature of the first four. The four ways, like the cardinal directions of the compass rose point out the sum of all the ways we as humans go about acquiring the things we need. They are rooted in the four “philosophies” of first century Israel, but they are as old as humanity's birth and as active today as then. The four ways are about our means of acquisition, whether physical or emotional, and begin at the assumption of need, of emptiness. The Fifth Way moves in a completely different direction and turns the four ways inside out, downside up, and backside front. Instead of beginning at the point of need, it begins at the point of abundance--that everything we really need is already here—within, among, and in the midst of every moment of our lives. To see the abundance in the midst of very real physical and emotional need is the purpose of the Fifth Way…training ourselves to see the Father's presence, which makes each moment perfect despite our needs, and makes each of us perfect too…despite our flaws.

Dave Brisbin | 2.1.15 The Fifth Way Series 9: Chuang Tzu, a 3rd century BCE Chinese philosopher said: The purpose of a fish trap is to catch fish. Once the fish is caught the trap is forgotten. The purpose of a rabbit snare is to catch a rabbit. Once the rabbit is caught, the snare is forgotten. The purpose of words is to convey ideas. Once the ideas are grasped, the words are forgotten. Where can I find a man who has forgotten words? He is the one I want to speak with. To that I add: The purpose of theology is to catch God. Once God is “caught,” theology can be forgotten. To find a person who has forgotten theology is the goal of the Fifth Way of Jesus. Theology is our best attempt to express the inexpressible truth that is God, ultimately. Any theological truths we find along the Way can point to God, but are not God themselves, and in the light of God's presence, if they are not forgotten, then we are not really seeing the light.

Dave Brisbin | 11.09.14 The Fifth Way Series 1: First in a series presenting the main concepts and themes of Dave Brisbin's book, The Fifth Way: A Western Journey to the Hebrew Heart of Jesus. The book traces the journey to the journey, the fundamental changes in worldview necessary for a modern Westerner to approach the ancient and Eastern message of Jesus. The New Testament has been amazingly preserved for us in the modern world—we have the right words, we just don't know what they originally meant. Words such as heaven and hell, good and evil, sin, faith, salvation, and especially kingdom all mean one thing to us and another to those who first listened to Jesus. To step back into the sandals of Jesus' first followers and see Jesus and his Way of living life as he first presented it, is the goal of The Fifth Way. In this first message, we look at the fundamental relationship we have with our Father in heaven through the eyes of an old man dying of diabetes and his last words to Dave and his wife. Is God an angry God? Does God have to be angry with us in order to be perfect? How does Jesus' attitude toward life show us how we've been designed to live and love and be in love?
