This week we invited Lee Hodo, a veteran in marketing and promotion of wine and destination brands, who is leading the charge to showcase the amazing wines from this historical yet lesser-known AVA. Lee brought winemakers from three of the top Wineries in the area; Lava Cap, Edio from Delfino Farms and Starfield Vineyards. At between 1,200ft-3,500ft, elevation is one of the defining features of the region. As air hits the Sierra Nevada Mountains it is forced to rise through orographic uplift. As the air rises, the adiabatic process causes cooling at a rate of around 4 degrees Fahrenheit per 1000ft of elevation gain. As a result, ambient air temperatures in the region are between 10-15 degrees cooler than the Central Valley below. The complex topography of El Dorado further distinguishes the region as a location for a diversity of premium grapes. As the sun sets, cool air from the Sierra Nevada settles in low lying pockets, creating areas of cold night-time air surrounded by relatively warmer hillside and hilltop sites. Lastly, the diverse soils offer a panoply of geologic and geographic settings that ensure maximum flavors will be concentrated within the grapes. Primary attributes of soils that are important to growers include, among others: mineral composition, soil texture, soil thickness, depth of root penetration, water retention properties, and resistance to erosion. L'ultima, in ordine di tempo, è quella lanciata dall'Agenzia Stampa AGI con l'articolo del 28 maggio u.s. con l'articolo intitolato Giovanna d'Arco, la prima femminista della Storia. Sia ben chiaro e scritto a chiare lettere: non solo nessuna santa della Chiesa Cattolica può essere etichettata come femminista, ma neppure nessuna donna, che si professa cattolica, può essere una femminista. Il modello per ogni donna credente nella Santissima Trinità ha come modello e stella polare Maria Santissima, che non può avere nulla a che vedere con una ideologia che non solo va contro le leggi di Dio, ma anche contro le leggi di natura. Il femminismo è una patologia politica e cultura iniziata sì in Francia, ma tre secoli dopo Jeanne d'Arc, sotto la Rivoluzione francese.Di fronte a queste menzogne paganeggianti che strumentalizzano, per scopi ideologici, figure come quelle dei santi, non si può far altro che, con fonti storiche alla mano, ricordare chi sono state realmente. Nessuna interpretazione, ma solo fatti e date. La memoria liturgica della cosiddetta Pulzella d'Orléans cade il 30 di maggio, giorno del suo dies natalis. Fin da quando aveva tredici anni fu eletta ed investita da Dio per una missione religiosa e politica di altissima responsabilità: liberare la Francia dalla prepotenza inglese in nome di Dio.La Chiesa, in quel periodo, viveva la profonda crisi del grande scisma d'Occidente, durato quasi 40 anni. Quando Caterina da Siena (1347-1380) morì c'erano un Papa e un antipapa; quando Giovanna nacque, nel gennaio del 1412 (si dice il giorno dell'Epifania, ma la cronologia è incerta), c'erano un Papa e due antipapi. Insieme a questa lacerazione all'interno della Chiesa, vi erano continue lotte fratricide fra i popoli europei, la più drammatica delle quali fu la «Guerra dei cent'anni» tra Francia e Inghilterra, iniziata nel 1337 e conclusasi, con pause intermedie, nel 1453.Guerre, carestie, pestilenze, eresie prostrarono l'Europa. Era il tempo degli incubi, dove nell'immaginario collettivo le autentiche manifestazioni mistiche si intrecciavano con le magie e le stregonerie, il mondo reale della sofferenza e della morte cruenta si sovrapponeva alle fantasie demoniache popolate di mostri e di balli macabri. In questo clima di sopraffazione, di congiure e di usurpatori, di confusione nella Chiesa e nelle nazioni, l'analfabeta Jeanne, nata a Domrémy (oggi Domrémy-la-Pucelle), nei Vosgi, nella regione della Lorena, scrive una lettera di fuoco e di grazia il 22 marzo 1429, martedì della Settimana Santa:LA PULZELLA INVIATA DA DIO«Gesù, Maria! Re d'Inghilterra e voi duca di Bedford che vi dite reggente del regno di Francia, voi Guglielmo di La Poule, conte di Suffolk, Giovanni sire di Talbot, e voi Tommaso sire di Scales, che vi dite luogotenenti del duca di Bedford, rendete giustizia al Re del cielo. Restituite alla Pulzella che qui è stata inviata da Dio, il Re del cielo, le chiavi di tutte le buone città da voi prese e violate in Francia. Ella è venuta qui da parte di Dio per implorare il sangue reale. Ella è pronta a far pace, se volete renderle giustizia, a patto che le restituiate la Francia e paghiate per averla tenuta. E fra voi, arcieri compagni di guerra e voi altri che siete sotto la città di Orléans, andatevene nel vostro paese in nome di Dio; e se non lo fate attendete notizie della Pulzella che ben presto vi vedrà in grandissime disgrazie. Nell'estate del 1425, all'età di 13 anni, nel giardino di casa, sente una voce... è quella di san Michele Arcangelo, che le dice di far sua la causa della Francia. Udrà la voce ancora molte volte e ad essa si uniranno quelle delle vergini e martiri santa Margherita D'Antiochia (275 - 290) e di santa Caterina d'Alessandria (287-305). L'incalzante invito era accompagnato a quello di far consacrare Carlo di Valois (1403-1461) quale re di Francia. Ma come era possibile? Giovanna fece resistenza: era una semplice ragazza adolescente, come avrebbe potuto ottemperare a quella richiesta? Ma il Signore rende possibile l'umanamente impossibile.IL VOTO DI VERGINITÀDomrémy si trovava ai confini del regno, nella valle della Mosa che divideva la Francia dall'Impero Romano-Germanico. Gli Anglo-Borgognoni nel 1428 si impadronirono di tutte le piazze della Mosa rimaste fedeli al Delfino di Francia: Domrémy fu devastata; ciò decise il capitano di Vaucouleurs, Robert de Baudricourt (ca. 1400-1454), che in un primo tempo aveva considerato Jeanne d'Arc una pazza, di inviarla alla missione da lei richiesta: salvare Orléans; far consacrare il Re; cacciare gli Inglesi dalla Francia; liberare il duca d'Orléans.Jeanne, che aveva fatto voto di verginità per amore di Gesù Cristo, indossati abiti maschili e tagliati i capelli, non per farsi maschio e rivaleggiare con i maschi, ma per nascondere prudenzialmente il più possibile la sua identità femminile per non essere oggetto di interesse in mezzo a tutti quegli uomini, venne armata di tutto punto e sul suo stendardo venne dipinto Cristo Re, affiancato da due angeli, con le parole «Jesus-Maria». Nessuna spada in mano, dunque (come invece certe letture femministe farneticano), ma sempre e solo il vessillo di Fede.Il nome di Gesù comparirà sempre nell'intestazione delle sue lettere, sul suo anello e morirà pronunciandolo più volte a gran voce. La Pulzella si unì ad un esercito d'appoggio che proteggeva un convoglio di approvvigionamento e riuscì ad arrivare ad Orléans dalla riva sinistra. L'8 maggio 1429 gli inglesi assedianti furono sconfitti. Da qui si susseguirono una battaglia dopo l'altra e in queste circostanze il coraggio soprannaturale della giovane santa ricorda la tempra dei condottieri dell'antico Testamento, garantiti dal Dominus Deus sabaoth (Signore Dio degli eserciti).Il 17 luglio dello stesso anno, Carlo VII venne incoronato a Reims alla sua presenza. Il successo la consacrò eroina inviata dal Cielo: la gente voleva toccare i suoi abiti, il suo cavallo, l'avvicinavano per conoscere il futuro, per richiedere grazie e guarigioni...Jeanne d'Arc vinse il dominio straniero per volontà di Dio e riuscì ad infondere audacia e speranza nell'esercito regio; ma gli storici oggettivi concordano anche nel riconoscerle il merito di aver allontanato con il nemico anche il Protestantesimo, che altrimenti si sarebbe innestato in Francia. Tuttavia le truppe inglesi la fecero prigioniera a Compiègne il 23 maggio 1430. Dopo due giorni dalla cattura, l'Università di Parigi chiese che l'Inquisizione la giudicasse come una strega. Questa soluzione piacque molto al duca di Bedford in quanto gli consentiva di screditare Carlo VII, che sarebbe apparso come colui che doveva la conquista del trono alle potenze infernali.L'INIQUO PROCESSO DI IDOLATRIA, SCISMA E APOSTASIAIl 9 gennaio 1431 il vescovo Pierre Cauchon (1371-1442) aprì il processo presso Rouen nel castello di Le Bouvreuil, fortezza di Richard Beauchamp (1382-1439) che, conte di Warwich e governatore della città dal 1427, aveva precise consegne dal sovrano Enrico VI (1421-1471). Fra gli assessori convocati, sei provenivano dall'Università di Parigi, inoltre erano presenti circa sessanta prelati ed avvocati ecclesiastici, fra cui il Vescovo di Norwich e, al di sopra del Collegio Giudicante, il Cardinale di Winchester, Henry Beaufort (ca. 1374-1447), prozio e cancelliere di Enrico VI.L'iniquo processo durò dal 20 febbraio al 24 marzo 1431. L'imputata era accusata di idolatria, scisma e apostasia. Durante il processo le venne chiesto se era in grazia di Dio ed ella rispose: «Se non ci sono, voglia Dio mettermici, e se ci sono voglia Dio tenermici». I suoi interrogatori furono un capolavoro di determinazione e perseveranza nella sola fede cattolica. Fu abbandonata al braccio secolare. Il 30 maggio 1431 Giovanna venne arsa viva sulla piazza del Vieux-Marché di Rouen. Morì contemplando una grande croce astile che frate Isembard de la Pierre aveva portato per lei.Nel 1456 fu solennemente proclamata la sua riabilitazione; sarà beatificata da san Pio X (1835-1914) nel 1910 e canonizzata nel 1920 da Benedetto XV (1854-1922).
