What is the telos of education? In a free society, is it desirable or practical to attempt to design a single system of schooling that is ideal for everyone? Can schools hold a neutral position regarding morality and values, or is education a fundamentally ethical enterprise that inevitably adopts a new moral framework when an old one is removed? In this presentation, Patrick Halbrook considered these questions in a historical framework as they have been applied to American education in the twenty-first century.Patrick Halbrook is a teacher, graphic designer, and writer—as well as a passionate advocate for classical Christian education. Over the years he has written for various publications including The Imaginative Conservative, FORMA Journal, The Classical Difference, and Cary Christian School's blog, The Forum. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal and Biblical Studies from Florida College and a Masters of Art in History from North Carolina State University.

Daniel McShea is Professor of Biology, and Associate Professor of Philosophy at Duke University. He is a scientist, philosopher and author. His work focuses on 2 main areas: 1) Evolution of Complexity: In a 2010 book with Robert Brandon, Biology's First Law, he argues that the complexity of organisms will tend to increase spontaneously in the absence of natural selection and other forces. In evolution, complexity is easy (and simplicity is hard.) A second book, The Missing Two Thirds of Evolutionary Theory (Brandon and McShea 2020), further develops the theory, offering a quantitative formulation.2) Teleology (purpose, goal directedness): A common physical structure underlies all goal-directed systems, from acorns turning into oak trees to homing torpedoes to human passions and purposes. All of these are hierarchically structured, consisting a small thing nested within a large thing, more precisely, a goal-directed entity moving within a larger directing field.TIMESTAMPS:(0:00) - Introduction (1:00) - What is Field Theory?(6:44) - Goal-Directedness(10:13) - Support for Field Theory(15:15) - Persistence & Plasticity(22:20) - Purposiveness & Teleology(31:10) - Free Will & Consciousness(41:15) - Internal Conflicts(44:30) - Future of Field Theory(53:40) - Intentionality(55:45) - External Influences vs Internal Fields(1:01:20) - Purpose in the Universe/Meaning of Life(1:05:20) - Final Thoughts(1:06:20) - ConclusionEPISODE LINKS:- Dan's Website: https://scholars.duke.edu/person/dmcshea- Dan's Work: http://www.biology.duke.edu/mcshealab/- Dan's Publications: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=IB5lqFwAAAAJ&hl=en- Dan's Books: https://www.amazon.com/Books-Daniel-W-McShea/s?rh=n%3A283155%2Cp_27%3ADaniel%2BW.%2BMcShea- Elusive But Everywhere: https://aeon.co/essays/a-new-field-theory-reveals-the-hidden-forces-that-guide-us- Levin, Solms, Babcock, McShea: https://youtu.be/VUszs0nALxM?feature=shared- Levin, Babcock, McShea: https://youtu.be/7ZahEQGwc1g?feature=sharedCONNECT:- Website: https://tevinnaidu.com - Podcast: https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/mindbodysolution- YouTube: https://youtube.com/mindbodysolution- Twitter: https://twitter.com/drtevinnaidu- Facebook: https://facebook.com/drtevinnaidu - Instagram: https://instagram.com/drtevinnaidu- LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/drtevinnaidu=============================Disclaimer: The information provided on this channel is for educational purposes only. Is the arrow of history one of progress, where things just keep getting more bureaucratic and more complex, or is there another story that we could tell about the past? This week we're cracking open David Graeber and David Wengrow's Dawn of Everything, which argues that the arrow of progress is flat out WRONG. Instead of there being a single story of history that requires us to live these enfeebled, isolated, matrixy lives, there is a whole world of possibility out there for what a society *could* look like, but they've been keeping it from you! Or have they? We enter into this exploration with some skepticism (at least Nastia does), because it's possible that there are other competing systems that litter history, but surely there's something meaningful about the fact that they've all been subsumed into the monetized beast that is the modern capitalist technotopia (or dystopia, the designation of which is inversely dependent on how much paid vacation leave you get and directly dependent to how much time you spend deboning chickens on the Perdue production line). Whatever the case may be, we are listening, Davids - because any change starts with an idea, and this book is full of ‘em. Federico Faggin is an Italian-American physicist, engineer, inventor and entrepreneur. He is best known for designing the first commercial microprocessor, the Intel 4004. A new groundbreaking theory of consciousness proposes that qualia reside in quantum fields. Federico Faggin is one of the greatest luminaries of high technology alive today. A physicist by education, he is the inventor of the microprocessor and the MOS silicon gate technology, both of which underlie the modern world's entire information technology. With the knowledge and experience of a lifetime in cutting-edge fields, Federico now turns his attention to consciousness and the nature of reality, sharing with us his profound insights on the classical and quantum worlds, artificial intelligence, life and the human mind. In this discussion, he elaborates on an idealist model of reality, produced after years of careful thought and direct experience, according to which nature's most fundamental level is that of consciousness as a quantum phenomenon, while the classical physical world consists merely of evocative symbols of a deeper reality. Why do we have the tendency to believe things when they may not be true? Why do we project patterns, agency and meaning onto the world when sometimes there is none? How can we consider the probabilities of conspiracies to identify the ones that may be true? How do we encourage brave journalism that calls out conspiracies even by powerful institutions, in spite of the pejorative term ‘conspiracy theorist'? Today we have the uncomfortable topic of how our brains often believe things which aren't true. The topic fits perfectly with our theme for series 4 of Self-transcendence vs Self-delusion. Our innate ability to notice patterns in systems, assign agency and find meaning in the world are among the reasons we've evolved to become so successful at predicting, understanding and creating meaningful collaborations in the world. But the issue with these abilities is that we might make the mistake of thinking what the brain assigns to the world for our own survival, is necessarily true of the world itself. Sure our brains do track the truth but truth is not always what's needed for survival; so issues like negativity bias, confirmation bias and creating narrative stories that conveniently map onto our existing world view have become a deeply engrained part of our society. Add to this modern phenomena like the siloing of information by the internet into small echo chambers where only like minds come together; algorithmic amplification of memes led by the internet business model of “maximising engagement”; and decreasing trust in institutions, as economic inequality in the world increases exponentially, and you get a perfect storm of clashing beliefs about the truth. Fortunately, our guest today is one of the most established sceptical voices in science who reminds us that we need to track closely the difference between what can be collectively confirmed to be true, and what our brains project to be true from the inside out. He is of course, New York Times best selling author and founding publisher of Skeptic magazine Michael Shermer; he wrote for 18 years for the Scientific American. He's written nine books but today we're going to focus on his books “The Believing Brain” and his new release “Conspiracy: Why the rational believe the irrational”. What we discuss: 00:00 Intro 07:00 The philosophy of scepticism. 08:45 ‘Default to truth' 15:40 Moral truth VS moral relativism. 19:00 Scientific revolutions overturning consensus. 24:30 ‘The Believing Brain'. 25:40 The ability to see patterns in the chaos, and assign agency to them. 26:50 Evolution selects for assuming more things are real than not, just in case. 30:10 Bayesian inference: levels of confidence in being right or wrong. 32:40 ‘Agencicity', impugning patterns with intentional agency. 33:40 Most things happen randomly, and can't be predicted. 41:10 Assigning meaning to patterns in nature. 43:50 Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. 44:40 Teleology: goal directness in life. 47:50 Dennet - the intentional stance 48:50 Confirmation bias. 54:00 Algorithmic amplification. 57:40 There are many real conspiracies. 01:00:20 Tribal, proxy and paranoid conspiracism. 01:03:35 Being overly suspicious - negativity bias. 01:07:50 Critical thinking - how not to throw out the baby with the bathwater. 01:16:50 Conflict of interest in media - shareholders vs stakeholder interest. 01:18:40 The pejorative term ‘conspiracy theorist' demotivating brave journalism. 01:26:30 Reductionism and determinism evaluated. 01:32:20 Remote Viewing and psi phenomena: sceptics view. 01:46:30 The UFO phenomena: sceptics view. In this episode of Teleology we unpack the four causes by Aristotle and examine the role of final causality in our search for meaning. Briefly unpacking the scientific progress that resulted from ignoring final causes and focusing upon material, formal, and effecient causality we discover the roots of our mechanical understanding. Then we explore how this has resulted in a loss of meaning and purpose in our lives.

His main research interests are in moral psychology and empirically informed metaethics. He is interested in whether and how we can bring empirical data from diverse disciplines such as social psychology, neuroscience or cognitive science to bear on questions of normative and/or metaethical interests, and what the limits of this approach are. His latest book is Moral Teleology: A Theory of Progress. In this episode, we focus on Moral Teleology. We start by discussing what moral progress is, if it is possible, and we get into a moral anti-realist account of moral progress. We talk about how we can naturalize teleology. We discuss moral regress, and reactionary conservatism. Finally, we talk about institutions of moral progress, and what causes it. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Today's poem is Teleology by Willie Lin. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Major writes… “We've so much between us: awards shows, music, art, weather, and a final breath we do not know when will befall us. And yet, some remain alien and indifferent to others, incurious—sometimes for money, but sometimes, by choice. How we cherish our isolation.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Every donation makes a difference: https://tinyurl.com/rjm4synp

Bonnitta Roy and I explore the meaning of complexification and the evolutionary narrative. After some introductory context on Bonnie's prior engagement in the "scene" of integrative metatheory, we find our way to the topic of teleology (i.e., the apparent goal-directedness of nature). From there Bonnie outlines some of the pivotal mutations in the evolutionary narrative that have increased organism's capacity for abstraction. We discuss whether the directionality of these processes is captured in models of hierarchical complexity, or if other sorts of maps are needed to appreciate the evolution of mind. 0:00 Introduction 1:37 Bonnie's Background in Integrative Metatheory 12:30 On Integral vs. Metamodern: Problems with Stage Theories 17:53 On (Apparent) Teleology 21:00 The Story of Pivotal Mutations Up the Evolutionary Stack 31:22 Teleology* towards Increasing Causal Power 41:09 Getting Beyond Thoughts: Pure Abstractions vs. Categorical Abstractions 45:30 Information and Pure Abstractions: Direct Perception of the Causal Manifold 49:55 Is Increasing Hierarchical Complexity Getting Closer to the Causal Manifold? 1:03:27 Complexification as Recursively Finding New Vantage Points 1:12:38 Increasing Degrees of Freedom without Increasing Complexity? 1:15:22 Intimations and Afterthoughts: Directions for Further Discussion
Telos, Teleology, and the question of what is the end goal? In addition to the existential crisis, which turns out to be the contemporary edition of such, we engage with the long lasting effects of what we believe to be right and true and good. The mid life crisis perfectly encapsulates the identity of the 80's husband. Only, we live decades later and have our own problems to bear. Teleology remains the application of logic to what is to come. Christian identity and fidelity culminates in a critical question. “Now what?” How do we live out this kind of life—a life of love, grace, mercy, and salvation—in an overwhelmingly powerful culture that mocks Christianity, and a political complex that murdered the founder of this faith? How shall we now live when there is slavery, economic disparity, social inequality, corrupt government, and more? The secret, no surprise, is found in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Far from “blind faith,” however, this Way empowers a sense of agency and autonomy. No matter how challenging the systems of power are, nothing can strip you of the ability to have meaning and purpose. This kind of spirituality uses the end goal (the “telos”) as a means of transforming the world, beginning with us.
W3L: James talks about his recent trip to Wyoming. James and Drey discuss which religions in the world are the wealthiest.Main Topic: Why does God tell us to praise Him? What does it look like to live a life of praise? James and Drey discuss how the church has answered these questions throughout history and how we can answer these questions today.
In our continuing study in Romans today Pastor Mark brings us to the next verse in Chapter 8. This week's focus on the groaning motif is that God is working good through/despite it. Consider with us that Paul does NOT mean that all things naturally tend toward good, that there is no bad thing in life, and that fewer bad things will happen to believers; but he DOES MEAN that God is the one who works for our good, that God is making ALL THINGS work together for the good of believers, that God works for the good of those who love him, and that God works for believers to be conformed to the image of Christ.
Father Koys is back and ready to wrinkle your brains with today's topics. For one thing, he brings to mind listening to the news and how some have said things regarding how you shouldn't, which leads to all kinds of miscommunication at times. Father Koys also shares how June is coming up tomorrow and how today is the 15th Anniversary of the Unveiling of Our Lady of the Sign Iconic Monstrance, surrounding Father Anthony's years as a priest at Saint Stanislaus Kostka. However, his main topic up for discussion today is…teleology, due to the situation regarding many voices that are in discussion and conflict on if there is a God or not. To help discuss this point, Father Koys uses the idea/philosophical principle of Occam's Razor. https://ststanschurch.org/
Emotions play a pivotal role in shaping our lives. They contribute crucially to the rationality of life, making us unique in our ability to reason and make sense of the world.Ronnie de Sousa is a Swiss-born Canadian philosopher, renowned for his outstanding contributions to the philosophy of emotion and biology, a Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto and author of such books as The Rationality of Emotion (1987), Why Think? Evolution and the Rational Mind (2007) and Love: a Very Short Introduction (2015).Ronald and Greg talk about how emotions enable us to create appropriate responses to situations we face in life and to what extent we can evaluate emotions themselves as being more or less rational. They also discuss the profound impact that language has on how we perceive and experience our emotions, and how our relationships are shaped by what we say about them and what others say about them.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Emotions contribute to the rationality of life25:31: Emotions are just attitudes, and value in the world is just the projection of your attitude. The world is completely devoid of any objective real value. It's just chaos. And what makes life meaningful is that we are interested in this, that, and the other. That's what creates goals, and that's why our emotions help us to respond in ways that are relevant to those goals. And so emotions contribute crucially to the rationality of life. 06:24: An enormously important point about rationality is that it often escapes people because they tend to think that the only options are, well, you're either rational or irrational.Teleology vs. rationality08:05: Teleology is just something that has to do with the adaptation of a strategy to a goal. And, of course, in the context of evolutionary psychology, the goal is essentially just the trivial goal of propagating DNA, but rationality has to do with how we conceptualize the relationship between goal and means. And once again, with language, how we can debate about that, consider different strategies, invent new strategies, and innovate. Why people shouldn't be so sure of themselves47:22: If there's anything I want to convince people of is that they shouldn't be so sure of themselves and that moral fervor is not, in general, something that will achieve any of the reasonable goals that a moralist might want to achieve.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Thomas Hobbes “Leviathan” (1651)David HumeWhat the Tortoise Said to AchillesSharon StreetGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Toronto Ronald de Sousa on Linkedin Ronald de Sousa on TwitterAgainst Nature: Ronald de Sousa at TEDxUTSCHis Work:Articles on AeonRonald de Sousa on Google ScholarLove: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)Emotional Truth Why Think? Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 10, 2023 is: teleological tel-ee-uh-LAH-jih-kul adjective Teleological (and its less common variant teleologic) is a philosophical term meaning "exhibiting or relating to purpose or design especially in nature." // Their teleological theory on the origin of human beings was heavily challenged. See the entry > Examples: "Hegelianism—at least as [Søren] Kierkegaard understood it ... —treated history as an intelligible process by which humanity progressed toward a state of spiritual freedom. ... To Kierkegaard, this sweeping teleological view left no room for human agency." — Christopher Beha, Harper's, 27 Apr. 2020 Did you know? Perhaps teleological was destined to serve a role in English. The word, along with its close relative teleology, comes to us by way of New Latin, from the Greek root telos, meaning "end or purpose." Both entered English in the 18th century, followed by teleologist in the 19th century. Teleology has the basic meaning of "the study of ends or purposes." A teleologist attempts to understand the purpose of something by looking at its results. A teleological philosopher might argue that we should judge whether an act is good or bad by seeing if it produces a good or bad result, and a teleological explanation of evolutionary changes claims that all such changes occur for a definite purpose.

Today's ID the Future continues the conversation between Catholic intelligent design biologist Michael Behe and Catholic theologian Matthew Ramage. Both agree that nature points to a cosmic designer, but Ramage says he prefers, on aesthetic grounds, the idea that the biological realm has the capacity, gifted by God, to evolve on its own without the need for intervention by God. Behe notes that people have different aesthetic predilections, but it's the scientist's job not to figure out how he would have preferred things to have happened in nature, but to discover how they actually did come about. Behe also says that while the sun, moon, and stars do move according to fixed natural laws, it doesn't follow from this that Read More › Source
Today's ID the Future brings listeners physicist and engineer Brian Miller's recent lecture at the Dallas Conference on Science and Faith, “The Surprising Relevance of Engineering in Biology.” Miller rebuts several popular arguments for evolution based on claims of poor design in living systems, everything from the “backward wiring” of the vertebrate eye to whales, wrists, ankles, and “junk DNA.” But the main emphasis of this discussion is the exciting sea change in biology in which numerous breakthroughs are occurring by scientists who are treating living systems and subsystems as if they are optimally engineered systems. Some in this movement reject intelligent design for ideological reasons. Others embrace it. But all systems biologists treat these systems as if they are masterfully engineered Read More › Source

Here in Part 2, Luskin give a peek behind the scenes of ID 3.0, the current research program inspired by the intelligent design framework. Luskin is then asked to explain his reservations about theistic evolution, and Luskin points out the evidential, rhetorical, and logical problems he sees with the brand of theistic evolution advocated by Francis Collins and Biologos. What about the future of the intelligent design movement? Luskin says he's optimistic, both because of the exciting research and publication breakthroughs of late, and because of the many converts he's seeing to the ID framework. According to Luskin, many of these Read More › Source
