St. Frances Cabrini knew that identity flows from relationship; not from mission. She let her mission flow from her friendship with the living God. Do I?
Friends of the Rosary, Today, November 13, we honor St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, an Italian missionary who spent much of her life working with Italian immigrants in the U.S. She is the patron of immigrants. Mother Cabrini established orphanages, hospitals, convents, and schools to help immigrants and to care for the sick and abandoned. Orphaned herself in Italy before she was 18, she joined the Sisters of the Sacred Heart and took on the name “Xavier” in honor of St. Francis Xavier, the great universal missionary. From a young age, longed to be a missionary in China, but God had other plans for her. At the advice of Pope Leo XIII, who told her “Not to the East, but to the West,” she focused her missionary efforts on the United States. She died in 1917 and was canonized in 1946, just before a new wave of immigrants began to arrive in the U.S. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Saint Frances Cabrini, pray for us! The main goal of the Society of Saint Pius X is to preserve the Catholic Faith in its fullness and purity, to teach its truths, and to diffuse its virtues, especially through the Roman Catholic priesthood. Pastoral Reflections Finding God In Ourselves by Msgr. Don Fischer
Gospel Luke 17:11-19 As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voice, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” Reflection The Samaritans play an important role in the scriptures. The thing that is unique about them is that they did not believe in the temple, yet they truly believed in the Torah. They were free of the institution, and we see them in interesting roles. The Good Samaritan, the one who takes care of someone, the woman at the well was a Samaritan. And in this passage, we see the Samaritan being the only one who comes back and thanks Jesus for the healing. Closing Prayer Father, help us to see the role of religion as an institution, and the role of religion as a way of entering into the presence of God, experiencing him within us and living through us, doing his work through us. Keep us in touch with the heart of what it is that Jesus taught, so we will not lose our way in an institution that seeks to control our behavior. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, Virgin Lectionary: 493The Saint of the day is Saint Frances Xavier CabriniSaint Frances Xavier Cabrini's Story Frances Xavier Cabrini was the first United States citizen to be canonized. Her deep trust in the loving care of her God gave her the strength to be a valiant woman doing the work of Christ. Refused admission to the religious order which had educated her to be a teacher, she began charitable work at the House of Providence Orphanage in Cadogno, Italy. In September 1877, she made her vows there and took the religious habit. When the bishop closed the orphanage in 1880, he named Frances prioress of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Seven young women from the orphanage joined her. Since her early childhood in Italy, Frances had wanted to be a missionary in China but, at the urging of Pope Leo XIII, Frances went west instead of east. She traveled with six sisters to New York City to work with the thousands of Italian immigrants living there. She found disappointment and difficulties with every step. When she arrived in New York, the house intended to be her first orphanage in the United States was not available. The archbishop advised her to return to Italy. But Frances, truly a valiant woman, departed from the archbishop's residence all the more determined to establish that orphanage. And she did. In 35 years, Frances Xavier Cabrini founded 67 institutions dedicated to caring for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated and the sick. Seeing great need among Italian immigrants who were losing their faith, she organized schools and adult education classes. As a child, she was always frightened of water, unable to overcome her fear of drowning. Yet, despite this fear, she traveled across the Atlantic Ocean more than 30 times. She died of malaria in her own Columbus Hospital in Chicago. Reflection The compassion and dedication of Mother Cabrini is still seen in hundreds of thousands of her fellow citizens who care for the sick in hospitals, nursing homes, and state institutions. We complain of increased medical costs in an affluent society, but the daily news shows us millions who have little or no medical care, and who are calling for new Mother Cabrinis to become citizen-servants of their land. Frances Xavier Cabrini: Episode One Description:
From the responsorial psalm: "He guides me in right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side With your rod and your staff that give me courage. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want." A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (Lk 17:11-19) As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. Lepers see Jesus as he travels through Samaria and Galilee. The ten lepers remain at a distance and call out loudly to him, "Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!" In a few words, Jesus heals them, saying, "Go show yourselves to the priests." As the lepers go, they are miraculously healed of their leprosy as they obey Jesus' command through their faith and action. But only one leper—a Samaritan, a foreigner—returns to thank Jesus, falling to his knees. Jesus says, "Stand up and go; your faith has saved you." Through his faith and gratitude, the leper receives complete healing in mind, body, and soul. As the day progresses, will there be time to stop and thank God for the work he accomplishes through us as we do his will. God, let me consider the Gospel acclamation: "In all circumstances, give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus." I am sure that throughout the day I will experience what I believe are dark valleys, paths that appear to lead to no good end. Even in those circumstances, stir up in me the desire to take comfort in you, knowing you are present with your rod and your staff to guide and protect me. Keep me in your care, Lord. Give me the grace to give you thanks always for being at my side to give me courage as I move through every moment of the day. Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, pray for us! Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lectio-divina-daily/support
Few saints exemplify the power of Catholic leadership more than a simple Italian nun named St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. Although plagued with bad health and many restrictions in her life she found a way to be incredibly productive founding schools, orphanages, and hospitals on four continents. She teaches us to overcome whatever lies in our way as we pursue God's will – sharing with us her personal motto, “I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me.”

Welcome to Vatican Insider on what seems to be a torrid weekend in so much of the world! And so many people in the world do not have access to air conditioning or other methods of cooling off so let's pray for those brothers and sisters of ours! This weekend in the interview segment! I present Part II of my conversation with Fr. Ramil Fajardo, a dear friend from the archdiocese of Chicago. For several years, he was the rector of the shrine of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini in Chicago. During his time there, he organized a Jubilee Year dedicated to Mother Cabrini and he is now involved in an interesting way with the Church's worldwide 2025 Jubilee Year. Fr. Ramil, in fact, announced last week in Part I that a statue of Mother Cabrini is coming to Rome for the 2025 Holy Year and will be placed in a garden area of St. Paul's Outside the Walls basilica. So, join Fr. Ramil and me for that riveting story! When you think of the impact of Frances Xavier Cabrini's life dedicated to migrants over a century ago and the extensive worldwide plight of migrants today, we know we must do what she did: bring God's caring love to those who, like our own ancestors at some point, face unknown challenges in a new land.
