Even though you seldom know what will go wrong there are some ways to plan for it according to Frank Supovitz author of the book What to Do When Things Go Wrong (https://amzn.to/39tlLmk). At some point, something at your sports event is likely to go wrong. How you prepare for and respond to that inevitability will determine how your event is experienced and perceived by participants and spectators alike. For nearly 10 years, Frank Supovitz was senior vice president of events for the National Football League, responsible for all the league’s events including the Super Bowl. In that capacity, he saw all numbers of scenarios, including the unexpected blackout during the 2013 game in New Orleans. In a new book, “What to Do When Things Go Wrong,” Supovitz has put together a game plan for organizers and meeting planners of all kinds based on his own experiences, which also included 13 years organizing events for the National Hockey League. In this podcast, Supovitz discusses how event organizers can plan for the unexpected, how the NFL responded to some of its most challenging moments and how some of the league’s events have grown considerably over the years.

It's entirely reasonable to assume that things will go wrong from time to time. Things will go wrong in your life, your business, and within your investment portfolio. When a crisis lands, what matters most is how you respond. My guest today is Frank Supovitz, THE man behind the scenes at major events including the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup and Indy 500. As Senior Vice President of Events for the National Football League, Frank oversaw the meteoric growth of the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl and NFL Draft. He's one of only four people to have been in charge of the Super Bowl in its 50-year history. Frank is author of What to Do When Things Go Wrong, where he guides readers through the process of making sure you handle inevitable problems as if it's something you do day in and day out. This conversation is all about thinking through and preparing for all potential problems. Because things will go wrong; it's our preparation and response when that happens that makes all of the difference. Here's my conversation with Frank Supovitz, author of What to Do When Things Go Wrong, in episode 451 of Informed Choice Radio.

Sports-industry jobs have never been easy to land — positions are limited and the competition fierce. But Matthew Higgins, executive vice president of Business Operations for the New York Jets, says there is still a way in. “There is no natural path to be part of a sports team or league,” says Higgins, “but the two I’ve seen work are internships and [ticket] sales.” Higgins, Queens College class of ’98, participated in the third annual Sports Alumni Roundtable, sponsored by the college’s Office of the President. He was joined by fellow alumni Frank Supovitz, ’79, senior vice president of events for the National Football League, and Howie Rose, ’77, sportscaster for the New York Mets and Islanders, to discuss their careers and the tough culture of the business. “The world doesn’t start at 9 o’clock in the morning and it doesn’t end at 5 p.m.,” says Supovitz, “You’ve got to get in somewhere, get involved, get seen, get known.”
