Then, put on your (v unflattering) bathing caps, we're diving in to the Paris Games. Jessi gets a shocking DM from a Canadian Olympic Gymnast and celebrates Hot, Taught, Cocky, Ballsy Olympians! She gives her HOT TAKES on who are the sexiest athletes, why the olympics needs more a**holes, and why she thinks she should compete at the 2028 games. Plus... Breaking Penis News makes it's triumphant return as we discuss the Penis that Broke an olympians dreams. What is the Olympic flame? The 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing have begun, let's look at one of the Games' iconic symbols, the Olympic flame, and how it spreads the values of the Olympic movement. It brings a sense of identity to the Games, much like the Olympic rings and its Latin motto Citius Altius Fortius. Throughout the Games, the flame burns inside the Olympic stadium, symbolising the ideals of peace and friendship between people. The flame is a reminder of the Games of ancient Greek times, when messengers travelled from city to city announcing competition dates, as well as calling for a sacred Olympic truce. This meant all conflicts ceased, allowing athletes and spectators to travel to Olympia. Of course in 2021, the coronavirus hasn't agreed to any truce, so the Tokyo Games are being organised under strict measures. Are you saying the history of the Olympics is linked to Ancient Greece? All of our TKFLASTANIS are very dear to us, but Citizen #1 will have a special place in our hearts. Bobsledder Josh Williamson, winner of the first season of Team USA's "The Next Olympic Hopeful" was our first interviewee, and now he returns, on the cusp of fulfilling his "Next Olympic Hopeful" goals and making it to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. We catch up with Josh and learn how he's approaching this season, what it's like to become a veteran in the sport, and what the bobsled track at Beijing is like (POV video here). Follow Josh on Twitter and Insta In our history moment on Atlanta 1996, Alison dives into maybe the most controversial phrase that came out of Juan Antonio Samaranch's mouth during the Games. Also on tap, we've got news from TKFLASTAN, including updates on Evan Dunfee, Dawn Harper Nelson, Connor Fields and Stephanie Roble. In our Beijing 2022 update, the Olympic Flame is officially lit and has traveled to Beijing, though not without controversy. The Torch Relay, of which there are few details, includes the inspiring slogan "Health, Joy and Energy." Alison is not impressed by Jill's attempts to spruce that up. And we have news from Milan-Cortina 2026, in which we are completely unsurprised to learn of venue changes due to cost containment needs. The Games aren't even for another 4+ years, but maybe it's a good thing that they've figured this out now. Thanks so much for listening, and until next time, keep the flame alive! Swimmer Markus Rogan was a double Olympic silver medallist in 2004 in Athens and a world record holder, before it all fell apart. He learnt the hard way about what can happen when the Olympic flame is extinguished. For some like him, when their sporting careers end a new unexpected challenge arises. Markus tells us about his struggle for a new identity and purpose away from the sporting arena, and his advice to other athletes facing that same challenge Kaleigh Gilchrist was badly injured in an accident when the balcony she was standing on collapsed. That almost cost her her place at the Games, and much more. Thankfully she made a full recovery and with the additional year delay to the Olympics, she was ready to take her part in what would eventually turn out to be a gold medal for her and the rest of the USA Women's water polo team. What is the Olympic flame? Thanks for asking! As Japan prepares to host the delayed 2020 Olympics, let's look at one of the Games' iconic symbols, the Olympic flame, and how it spreads the values of the Olympic movement. What happens once the flame is lit? What happens if the flame goes out? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here:What is the offside rule? We're going back to 1976 to hear one Olympian's story of what life was like on the luge track at a time when there wasn't even a U.S. Luge Association. Maura Grogan, née Haponski, tells us how she got involved in the sport as a high schooler, what it was like to train with hardly any resources, and about her time at the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck. This is definitely the story of taking Pierre de Coubertin to heart and valuing the participation aspect of the Olympics (but hey, the U.S. team finished all their runs, which was an amazing feat for them). If you want to know more about that time in U.S. luge history, Sports Illustrated ran a piece just before the 1976 Olympics that's a fantastic read. We've got a Team Olympic Fever update with Clare Egan, Erin Jackson and Jacqueline Simoneau. Catch Jacqueline on the radio here. The Olympic Flame has officially been lit! We talk about the torch lighting ceremony – and yes, the women in the Greek temple are priestesses, not goddesses, as we keep saying. But the flame! It's lit! Download Podcast In 1996, the Olympic summer games were held in the United States. The Olympic torch traveled across America to communities containing 90% of the America population. Ten thousand Americans were given the high honor of carrying the Olympic torch before it reached its final destination in Atlanta, Georgia. People, of diverse ethnic groups and ages carrying the Olympic flame, ran, walked, or rode their route to the next torch bearer and handed it off. They traveled in all sorts of weather. It was rainy when the flame came to my city. The wind was howling and the rain pelted the runner as he crossed a tall bridge carrying the Olympic flame. Because the torch was carefully designed, the flame continued to burn in spite of the inclement weather. I waited to get a closer look at the runner with his famous torch. He was dripping wet and sloshing through puddles, but you should have seen his face; it was beaming. The dismal rain didn’t douse his spirits. He held the torch triumphantly high. The crowds clapped and cheered; the torch was passing! What an awesome experience! I was caught up in the ecstasy of the moment. We weren’t there to see a person; we were there to see the Olympic Flame. Seeing the flame didn’t change my life. As a matter of fact, I’ve never read any account that the Olympic flame made any significant difference in anyone’s life. What a honor. While there are no crowds lining the streets to applaud your passing, you are chosen by Almighty God to carry the flame of God. We believers love John 3:16. But we should also love Luke 3:16... it's just as life changing. John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." What a graphic picture fire paints for us. But, what does it mean to us? Often in the Bible fire represents the presence of God. Helps Word Studies says "In Scripture, fire is often used figuratively – like with the "fire of God" which transforms all it touches into light and likeness with itself."  The fire of God transforms us and makes us more like God. Another symbolic use of fire is passion. In our culture fiery love is called passion. When we speak of the death of Christ we call it the Passion of Christ. Lots of  folks talk about love. We want to be loved. We want to give love... Yet in our culture love only lasts as long as it's: convenient, self-gratifying, pleasurable, fulfilling. We see people being used, abused and destroyed by the same people that say they love them. It's tragic. It's... heartbreaking. just plain WRONG! not what God had in mind at all! Love doesn't destroy people. 2 Corinthians 5:14 NIV “For Christ's love compels us...” KJV “For the love of Christ constraineth us...” But wait a minute. Compels means "to go"; constrains stops. How could both of these translations be correct? They are opposites! I found my answer in the love chapter 1 Corinthians 13. When you look at it there are some things that love does and some things that it doesn't do. Let's look at that closer. Love is... patient kind rejoices in truth bears believes hopes endures Love is not... jealous boastful  proud self-seeking easily irritated   Love doesn't... harbor a list of faults or wrongs think the worst rejoice when bad things happen. I made my list from the King James Version. You might want to make you a checklist from your favorite version. Regardless of what version you use, when you look at the checklist do you respond the same way I do when I look at it. Every time I look at the list I respond the same way. Wow! What an amazing description. Wow!  I CAN'T DO THAT!!! And the reality is, we can't. One time... I remember so clearly going through a really rough time. I was being mistreated. I had done everything I knew to do. I had forgiven. I had taken it to the cross. (Remember, I talked about processing hurt. If you haven't read that post. I'll share the link at the bottom of this post. ) Not feeling it. But I wanted to do more than get through the situation. I wanted to respond with love. But I wasn't feeling it. I know! I know! Love is more than a feeling. I was struggling! Yes, but my struggle was real. I know sometimes you do what's right and the feeling comes later. I was doing that, but I knew I wasn't walking in God's best. (I wasn't carrying His flame of love for sure!) So I prayed...and prayed...I ran out of words...so I prayed in the Spirit. One morning as I was praying in the Spirit,  I saw a picture in my mind of an oil refinery. I saw a tall tank and a smaller, fat, flat-topped round tank sitting beside it. Attached to the tall tank was something that looked like a pipe or a hose that was also attached to the smaller flat-topped tank. I heard God whisper, "If you'll stay hooked up to me, I'll give you some of mine." I had totally depleted my love. I had no more love to give, so God gave me some of His!!!! You see 1 Corinthians 13 is a picture of the God kind of love. We can't manufacture that kind of love. It only comes from God. But the good part of this story is we don't have to wait until we run out. As we stay connected, we can receive God's love on a regular basics. So, one of the roles of Precious Holy Spirit is to pour His love into our heart...so His love can flow through us! Look at the last part of Romans 5:5 …because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. That's how we do it! We receive His love! Splash in it! Enjoy it! Dance in it. Revel (make merry, have a party) Giggle and laugh in it. (Isn't that what rejoice means?) AND... THEN... give it away! Not pretentiously. glibly. meaninglessly. but in power Paul said powerfully what I am struggling to say... 1 Thessalonians 1:5 NLT For when we brought you the Good News, it was not only with words but also with power, for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true. And you know of our concern for you from the way we lived when we were with you. That's the cry of my heart! Oh Lord! Help us to carry the flame of your love into places where there is hopelessness. Help us to demonstrate your love in practical ways so your name will be gloried! Amen.   Here's the links I promised.

With Mark Lawson. Novelist John Irving discusses his new book In One Person, which has, like all of his novels, been written back to front with the ending first. It's a doorstop rather than a novella, but Irving explains that when you're looking at the impact of 30 or 40 years on a life it's hard to be brief. Trade and politics forged a bond between Manchester and the countries of West Africa that dates back to the 19th century. A new citywide festival - We Face Forward: Art from West Africa Today - seeks to update that bond through contemporary art and music. Writer Jackie Kay, whose memoir exploring her Scottish and Nigerian heritage won the Scottish Book of the Year Award last year, joined Mark on the festival's art bus and took a tour round the exhibitions. British designer Thomas Heatherwick was described by Terence Conran as a "Leonardo da Vinci of our times". His range of creations includes a bridge that rolls open and closed, the new Routemaster bus, a seed-bank and the cauldron to hold the Olympic Flame. Sarah Crompton of the Daily Telegraph considers two displays of Heatherwick's work: a forthcoming exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and a new book. Producer Erin Riley.
