Is your teen struggling in school, but you're hitting roadblocks trying to get them the support they need? The IEP (Individualized Education Program) process can be overwhelming—especially for minority parents facing additional challenges. In this episode, I sit down with Maria Davis-Pierre, a licensed mental health counselor, autism advocate, and founder of Autism in Black. Maria shares her personal journey navigating the special education system for her neurodivergent children and exposes the hidden biases that often prevent Black and minority children from getting the right diagnosis and accommodations. She also provides practical strategies for parents to advocate effectively, empower their teens, and navigate the IEP process with confidence. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE The biggest mistakes parents make when advocating for their child's IEP—and how to avoid them Why Black and minority children are often mislabeled as behavioral problems instead of receiving proper support How to involve your teen in their IEP process and teach them self-advocacy skills The hidden biases in school support systems that every parent should know about 5 KEY TAKEAWAYS FOR PARENTS OF TEENS Know Your Rights – Understanding the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) is crucial for effective advocacy. Cultural Bias Exists – Many minority children are misdiagnosed or overlooked, making advocacy even more critical. Empower Your Teen – Teens who participate in their own IEP process develop stronger self-advocacy skills for the future. Leverage Their Strengths – Connecting accommodations to your teen's interests can make learning more engaging. Give Yourself Grace – The IEP process is challenging, but you are your child's best advocate.
Mark Loveday is joined by Arran Smith to discuss specific learning challenges (SPLDs) and the associated diagnostic labels, focussing on how to better support pupils. In this episode, Arran explains how multi-sensory structured teaching supports processing information and aiding learning, as well as the importance of early diagnosis. Practitioners can learn more about whole-brain learning and not just focussing about book work, but a broader learning delivery to support all pupils. Arran and Mark also talk about the Assess, Plan, Do, Review (APDR) cycle, as well as the importance of connecting broader ideas together to help deliver quality education in the classroom.

On the 3rd December 2024, I had a two-hour-long Specific Learning Difficulties online assessment, so I could get a diagnosis of dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia or dysgraphia. I was assessed for all of them because I went through my university to get a dyslexia diagnosis and instead I had a Specific Learning Difficulties assessment that allowed me to be assessed for all of them. After the assessment (which was actually funny in its own right because I was able to be diagnosed quicker than she expected), I was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia. We'll cover these two conditions in the next two podcast episodes. Yet as an aspiring clinical psychologist, I found the assessment process fascinating and I really enjoyed how she adapted her process, her thoughts and what her approach as she got more information and test results so she could make a diagnosis. I learnt a lot during the assessment. Therefore, in this clinical psychology podcast episode, you'll learn what happens during a Specific Learning Difficulties assessment, how I got the assessment in the first place and what I learnt as an aspiring clinical psychologist. If you enjoy learning about mental health conditions, psychological assessments and applied clinical psychology then this will be a great episode for you. In the psychology news section, you'll learn about how to foster curiosity as a child, and the muddiness of microdosing research. LISTEN NOW! This is a little prequel to a coming 2 part series on Sensory Processing Difficulties .. something I am becoming very passionate about sharing with every parent I can.. as it can explain some of the recurring behaviours that may have baffled or exhausted you. Whether it is constant emotional dysreglation, or being overly excited, rough or agreesive through to being scared, anxious, withdrawn.. these can all be symptoms of sesnory processing difficulties. Theres also the more obvious ones of sensativily to sounds, lights, touch, smells or tastes.. or perhaps seeking these sensory inputs out!! Unfortunately most professionals, paediatritians, OTs, Psychologists, are not educated to understand the signs and symptoms of this disorder and look for it in our child that present with these troubles. They may be diagnosed with a variety of other conditions while this still lies under the surface not being treated. When we get in and intervene early we can create fantastic outcomes with dramatic improvements in all the above mentioned areas. So if this sounds like it could apply to you or your family please listen to this trailer and the coming 2 episodes to empower yourself to identify and treat sensory difficulties in yourself or you child! ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ UPDATE* Angela is now offering in clinic appointments as well as online, book an appointment by heading to www.busbynaturopathics.com.au and use the book now button or by clicking here Busby Naturopathics - Book appointment (cliniko.com) Thanks for listening. Today's episode is a little bit different than what I've been doing in the past few podcasts. This episode is a bit more casual and instead of trying to teach a bunch of new information, my goal is to connect the dots and piece together some of the things I've been talking about. Specifically today, I want to talk about kids who struggle in school and what you can do as a parent if you're feeling overwhelmed about how to help your kids. I think it's extremely unfortunate that our traditional healthcare system makes it seem like once you have a problem or get a label you're just stuck with it. I believe that healthcare practitioners need to work together and really open our minds to the possibilities of what we can do to bring restoration to our patients. When it comes to school, parents are stressed about how their kids are doing and being told that their kids are holding the rest of the class back and that they need to be medicated for the greater good. I don't want you to feel stressed or defeated if you hear this. I want you to feel empowered! As a parent, you do not need to feel like medication is the only option for your child. In this episode I'll share some of the common obstacles that could be impeding your child's capacity to learn and what kind of help is available if you have a child who is struggling. In her book, The Hidden Link Between Vision and Learning, Wendy Beth Rosen cited a study by Ohio State University. That research study found that 69% of students with IEPs identified as having treatable vision problems, yet would pass a typical school screening. Most people only associate vision with eyesight, but today's guest explains that there is so much more to the visual system and even a child with great eyesight could be struggling with vision-related learning difficulties. Today's guest is Dr. Juanita Collier and she is here to discuss these vision related learning difficulties. A parent actually recommended this interview after her experience finding the help her child needed. I am so glad they reached out. This interview is so informative for all parents and Dr. Collier provides us with some great tips and guidelines to help the development of a child's visual system. Show Notes: [2:57] - 10% of children have a vision-related problem that interferes with learning. [3:22] - Vision is how you are taking in anything through your visual system. It is more than eyesight. [4:33] - Most screenings test distance vision, but near vision isn't frequently checked in children. [5:46] - Kids don't know how to explain that their vision is poor, especially if that is how it has always been for them. [8:43] - Dr. Collier describes the different parts of a vision test and how she is able to determine if the challenges a child is having are due to their vision. [11:56] - In addition to eyesight, visual processing needs to be evaluated. [13:50] - Dr. Collier explains what visual therapy entails and how it can positively impact students with vision-related learning difficulties. [16:03] - For children who didn't crawl, parts of their vision hasn't been fully developed. [18:23] - Currently, we are teaching children to read before their visual system is ready. [21:03] - Excessive screen time can create some problems. [23:19] - We are losing the need for a lot of skills that used to develop naturally because of excessive screen use. [25:05] - Eye strain is a concern. Adults will take a break when they have eye strain from screen time, but children don't have that regulation. [26:09] - What is the 20-20-20 Rule? [28:23] - Dr. Collier shares information on concussions in children due to sports. About Our Guest: Dr. Collier is a leading Behavioral Optometrist and the founder of 4D Vision Gym. She specializes in post-concussion care, vision-related learning difficulties, visual rehabilitation and visual development for patients of all ages. She is one of only a few Optometrists in Connecticut to have earned Fellowship status by the International Examination & Certification Board (IECB) of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. Dr. Collier has lectured extensively to physicians, therapists, school faculty, healthcare professionals and students on the importance of visual functioning, and advocates to make vision rehabilitation accessible to individuals of all ages and abilities. They spotted for herring, which could sometimes be a bit nerve-wracking.As an employee with the newspaper, she worked in the darkroom, developing photos. This is the time of year where families are reaching out because a parent-teacher conference either indicated there is a concern at school or the parent's have questions about their child's performance. There are so many factors that contribute to a child's success at school and the ultimate goals are to improve a child's academic performance, encourage self care and independence, make friends and be social, keep them safe and improve self esteem. Dr. Kelly Christian and I have an informative discussion on how to help families understand their child's learning needs and what they can do to help them. Dr. Kelly M. Christian is a licensed psychologist and clinical director of Lawrence School's Ethan D. Schafer Center for Learning Differences, which provides community outreach to families, schools, and professionals all over Northeast Ohio. The Schafer Center offers low-cost psychological and learning assessments, professional development, multi sensory tutoring services, as well as consultations for parents seeking to better understand their child's learning needs. Dr. Christian is also an adjunct assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University and supervises the assessment training of doctoral students at both Case Western Reserve and Kent State Universities. Please join our Big Picture Social Emotional Learning Facebook group. Working and living with young children is never without challenges… most of us were mostly aware of that fact when we jumped into teaching and/or when we became parents. The thing is: there are challenges and then there are CHALLENGES. Some challenges that the young ones in our lives present, even though uncomfortable to deal with, we know we CAN deal with them, because we have instinctive and external resources we know we can rely upon… and then there are the CHALLENGES that defy logic, defy expectations, defy our understanding and our training… stretching us too close to the limits of our capacity to respond in ideal ways. If you know what I'm talking about, either in your own lived experience, or watching helplessly while another adult is trying to manage these kinds of challenges, then this episode about how diet, digestion, the brain and the emotions are all interconnected is going to be very important for you. Dawn Navaratnasingam is a mother of 4 children… and the honesty with which she share's her family's story is deeply inspiring and will give real hope to many listeners. Here are Dawn's links: https://www.dawnnavacoaching.com/ FB group: Natural Solutions for Children With Learning & Behavioral Difficulties: https://www.facebook.com/groups/naturalsolutions4kids/ Free Resource Guide "5 Common Foods That are Inflaming Your Child's Brain and What to Eat Instead": https://www.dawnnavacoaching.com/freeguide COMMON FOOD TRIGGERS OF BEHAVIORAL ISSUES Dairy and Behavioral Issues Food for the Brain reports that dairy is the most common food allergy among children, and for those who have ADHD, hyperactivity and food with dairy products seem to be associated with each other. This means that some children act out more than usual after consuming milk, cheese, yogurt, or other food with lots of dairy. Kids with a dairy sensitivity often become congested, bloated, and tired, but those are just the physical symptoms. They might also become irritable, depressed, anxious, and unable to concentrate. Gluten and Irritability According to ADDitude, gluten is another of the food triggers that can lead to bad behavior in kids. Gluten is mostly found in wheat, which means most types of bread, cereal, and crackers contain this common ingredient. Hyperactivity and food with gluten seem to go hand in hand in children with some sensitivity to this food. Irritability and aggressiveness are other bad behaviors that gluten can trigger. Artificial Food Dyes and Hyperactivity Undesirable child behavior and food dye are also often related. According to Disease Proof, food dyes are found in most processed foods, including cereal, juice, and candy. The dyes that are known for causing symptoms include Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, and Red 40. Hyperactivity and food dyes have been linked in studies. That's probably why synthetic food dyes are actually banned in some countries, such as the UK, but most of the processed food in the US still includes them. Clearly, some food triggers behavior problems, but the good news is that certain foods can actually improve these issues… and that's why you might want to schedule a free consultation with Dawn to learn more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nini-white/message

Self-Esteem vs. Self-ConfidenceIn this episode, I share 3 key findings explaining why focusing on confidence is critical in preparing your child for a positive school experience. First, understand that self-esteem is literally how favorably a person regards him or herself. High self-esteem can mean confident and secure–but it can also mean conceited, arrogant, narcissistic, and egotistical. Believing in yourself is the premise to understanding self-esteem.Self-confidence is believing in your ability. This approach takes on more of a growth mindset, a term coined by researcher Carol Dweck, which means that we value what we're doing regardless of the outcome. We learn to thrive on challenge, and don't see failure as a way to describe ourselves but as a springboard for growth and developing our abilities. A growth mindset is an approach to life in which an individual believes that their talents, intelligence, and abilities can be motivating.Find out what the correlation is between self-esteem and academic performance and why it may be more important to improve a child's self-confidence if we want to see improvements in achievement.Resources Mentioned In this Episode:Parent I.M.P.A.C.T.
