How to Help Aging Parents Transition to Senior Living: A Guide for Seniors & Their Families

Helping Seniors Navigate Life TransitionsIn this episode, we sit down with Kate Coulter, a senior lodging consultant and social worker with decades of experience helping families guide aging parents through the emotional and logistical process of downsizing and relocating. Whether you're an adult child supporting your parents, or a senior starting to consider next steps, this episode offers clear, compassionate advice for making the transition with dignity.Meet Kate Coulter & GerontoLogisKate shares how her background in community housing and social work led her to acquire GerontoLogis, a company specializing in senior transition services. With a team of trained professionals, they've supported thousands of families across the West Island and beyond—free of charge—by helping find the right senior living solutions.Spotlight on Villa BeaurepaireKate gives listeners an inside look at Villa Beaurepaire, a nonprofit seniors residence in Beaconsfield offering affordable and community-supported housing. With private apartments, underground parking, daily meals, and social activities, the residence provides autonomy with support. Half of the units are rent-geared-to-income, while the rest remain affordably priced for moderate-income seniors. When Is It Time to Talk to Aging Parents?Starting the conversation about downsizing or moving can be delicate. Kate explains that ideal timing involves the senior taking initiative—but in reality, adult children often need to observe gently and act with empathy. She walks through subtle ways to notice changes in behavior, self-care, or isolation, and emphasizes approaching these discussions with concern and respect rather than confrontation.Debunking the Myths About Senior ResidencesA major roadblock for many is the outdated belief that senior homes are only for the frail or elderly. Kate dismantles this misconception, explaining that many retirement communities are vibrant, amenity-rich spaces for active seniors. Think indoor pools, outings, games rooms, libraries—even golf simulators. Residents enjoy privacy, freedom, and social interaction, with optional support if needed.Understanding Categories of Care in QuebecQuebec categorizes senior housing based on autonomy, from independent (Categories 1–2) to assisted (Categories 3–4) and ultimately CHSLDs for high-level care. Most listeners will benefit from understanding the range of options available in Category 1 and 2 residences. Kate highlights how matching lifestyle preferences with budget and care needs is part of the process.Common Mistakes Families MakeOne of the biggest errors? Waiting too long to seek help. Kate warns that many families contact her only after they've reached a breaking point—emotionally, logistically, or financially. She encourages families to involve professionals early, especially if they're noticing burnout, declining home conditions, or rising care needs.Working Together: Lodging Consultants & Real Estate AgentsKate and Sean Broady discuss how her services and real estate support go hand in hand. While her team focuses on the emotional and medical aspects of the transition, the Broady Windsor Group often steps in when it's time to sell the family home. Acting early helps preserve equity and plan for the future, rather than reacting under pressure.Staying at Home: Alternatives to MovingNot every senior is ready—or willing—to move. Kate walks us through the options for staying at home, including retrofitting the home with lifts or elevators, bringing in home care services, or using technology like monitoring cameras for peace of mind. For many, it's about balancing safety, autonomy, and the caregiver's stress load.Building Trust Early with CompanionsFor seniors resistant to care, Kate suggests a subtle approach: hiring help...

Welcome to The kbbreview Podcast, your host is Andy Davies and this is Episode Seven of Season 13.And today we're delving into the world of franchises. They've been around a long time in this sector, of course, but the accelerated growth of Kutchenhaus in particular has refocused attention on the business model that combines lots of the pros of being an independent retailer with the power of a national brand. So names such as Kutchenhaus, as well as Schmidt, Kesseler, Ripples, Raison Home, The Kitchen Depot and many others are forging a whole new approach to kitchen and bathroom retail. We interviewed Paul Lee from Kutchenhuas a few episodes ago - so go back and listen to that for more specifics on their head office strategy - but today you'll hear kbbreview editor-at-large Rebecca Nottingham talking to franchisees from three different companies and looking at why they chose this route, what the pros and cons are, and how far they think franchising can go in the KBB market. So we have friend of the show Trevor Scott - who runs a Kutchenhaus franchise alongside his long-standing business RFK. We have James Casey from Kesseler in Sudbury, and we have Imran Azam who runs Ripples showrooms in Wokingham and Beaconsfield. Now, heads up, Imran's sound isn't great but bear with it as his story and perspective is really interesting AND he was literally talking to us on his holiday from the balcony of his hotel in Monaco. Rather brilliantly, you can hear the birds singing in the background.... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

He is back on the podcast to discuss his new TV series on the ABC called “I was Actually There.” Which is a brilliant follow up to his award winning series You Can't ask that!  He has been acknowledged with multiple awards and the You Cant Ask that format is the most successful series in ABC history, selling to 32 territories, and broadcast in 9 different languages world wide.  When it comes to the content Kirk creates, no subject is off-topic.  Through Kirk's work over the years he has acknowledged that every human, no matter what they believe or how high their stature they all share a core value: the desire to be understood.  Today we unpack the bold new six-part documentary which explores defining moments of our recent history through the eyes, ears and voices of those who witnessed them firsthand. From Port Arthur to the Beatles and even to the depths of the Beaconsfield mines - each topic is compelling and I think you will all walk away wanting to devour the whole series which is available to watch on View right now.  We will unpack what happened to You Can't Ask that - if it has run its course. Could it come back and where that conversation is.  This is a great opportunity to talk about how Kirk manages to get the crucial human elements out of his interviewees. How long it takes to film and edit each episode and what he wants people to feel with his new series.  We will talk about the companion podcast and what made him want to release longer edits of some of the contributors retellings of their topic. Kirk shares some really fascinating behind the scenes elements to this show and why he is more fascinated with the nuances and the mannerisms over what is actually being shared  There is so much to unpack with Kirk. In one of the most extraordinary survival feats of all time, Todd and Brant remained underground for 14 days - 321 hours, before finally reaching the surface on the 9th of May, 2006.  In this powerful conversation, Todd takes us inside what went through his mind in those 321 hours, how he and Brant found the strength to fight to be reunited with their families, and the impact the disaster has had on him today. With the yizkor memorial service fast approaching on the last day of Passover, April 13, The CJN Daily felt it appropriate to shine a light on the cemetery project undertaken by Montreal's Jewish Genealogical Society. For years, the group's main researchers, now led by Gary Perlman, have been lovingly cleaning, photographing and investigating nearly 80,000 people buried in Jewish cemeteries in his city and elsewhere in Quebec. A retired software developer, Perlman, who turns 67 this week, also posts this data online for posterity, so families can find out more about their ancestors. And fixes thousands of mistakes. It's a massive project that involves graves on Mount Royal dating back to the 1800s as well as the largest cemetery, the Baron de Hirsch in Snowdon—and others include more recent burials located just outside of Montreal, including in Duvernay, Dollard and Beaconsfield. What connects them all is the shared story of the history of Jews in Canada. Some tragic stories bring Perlman to tears—and he joins The CJN Daily to describe this sacred work and share his itinerary for this spring and summer. Henrietta Temple by Benjamin Disraeli audiobook. The Armine family, in particular the young Ferdinand Armine, is in great financial difficulties. Ferdinand's grandfather has burdened the family estate with large debts, which his father did not manage to diminish. Ferdinand himself is not disposed to live with his small income alone, and during his time in Malta with his regiment, he incurs debts of his own. The only thing that can easily pay for his debts and restore the house of Armine now is for Ferdinand to marry well, and the chosen wife for him is his cousin Katherine, the heiress to their grandfather's wealth. Katharine, who has idolized her cousin like their grandfather did, immediately consents to the marriage. But for Ferdinand, the match is a matter of necessity, not of love. Just as Ferdinand is beginning to realize that this planned marriage will be a loveless one for him, a chance meeting with the beautiful Henrietta Temple changes everything. "There is no love but love at first sight", and this young lady proceeds to turn Ferdinand's world upside down. Henrietta Temple is a semi-autobiographical novel and the author's first true success. Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield and later British Prime Minister, based this novel on his affair with the married Henrietta Sykes.

Israel isn't exactly known for golf. And with just one 18-hole course in the whole country, neither is it a destination for many pro golfers or passionate fans. That may be why it took until 2014 for the country to produce a player who qualified to join an LPGA Tour: Laetitia Beck. Since then, she's competed at the highest levels for her home country: at the Olympics, the Women's British Open, the LPGA and, of course, the Maccabiah, where she's won numerous gold medals. In all that time, she's proudly represented Israel, even displaying the Magen David on her golf shoes. This year, on Aug. 15, she'll be teeing up at Montreal's Beaconsfield club as part of B'nai Brith Canada's second annual Chip Away at Hate Classic. We caught up with her while she was on the road in Michigan to hear about golf culture in the Holy Land and her thoughts about Montreal's abundance of Jewish greens. In this episode I am joined by the architect Simon Pendal. We talk about his project Beaconsfield House. The home is an extension and renovation of a 1940's workers cottage, located in the suburbs of the Australian city of Perth. The scheme retains the original cottage fronting onto the street and extends it to the rear with a new extension to create new livings spaces, a master bedroom and a multi-purpose space for the artist owners to display their work. This is no ordinary extension, however. The new parts have been designed intentionally as a spatial sequence, that unveils itself in a series of sculptural, primitive, cave-like spaces. The existing house is linked to the extension via a huge, upturned boat curved ceiling and the curves and circular forms are repeated in the walls and window openings. The projected is unexpected in its suburban surroundings and has a hint of Corbusier in its use of material, form and colour. At the end of the episode, I ask Simon the three questions I ask all my podcast guests;– what really annoys him about his home?– what house has he visited that has really inspired him?– and, if he could choose anyone to design him a new house, who would he choose?I hope you enjoy listening!
