On Sept. 12, 2019, Brandon Embry, 33, was found by his mother and sister in his Asheboro, North Carolina apartment clinging to life. The scene was as if a grenade had gone off and #Brandon threw himself upon it: Brandon was stripped of his clothes, items were strewn about, the bathtub was overflowing, the toilet cover was snapped in half, his blood was in various spots throughout the apartment, a few doors were literally torn from their hinges and Brandon looked as if he had taken the full brunt of that grenade; his eyes were blackened, he had bruises all over his body, including his spine and legs, and other blunt-force object injuries, as well as purportedly defensive wounds on his hands (according to the nurses who treated him). And weirdly, there was also blood found in his truck. Brandon would die from his injuries 24 hours later. The coroner later identifies Brandon's cause of #death as complications from pneumonia and rationalizes that pneumonia could have made him disoriented and that's what explains the mess in the apartment. The case is closed because it's pneumonia; no foul play is suspected and the Ashboro Police in North Carolina have done a botched investigation filled with confirmation bias and tunnel vision between the detectives. There is much more to this case and justice for Brandon #Embry will be served! Enjoy the watch and please leave us a comment on your thoughts! Watch Part 1 HERE: https://youtu.be/qDYid_PlgXE

Kurzban's own work has been very wide-ranging, drawing on insights from social psychology, cognitive psychology, and experimental economics, in addition to evolutionary theory. In a nutshell, he attempts to identify the selective advantage of particular human social behavioral traits in the context of our environment of evolutionary adaptedness (EEA). To cite one well-known example from his work, Kurzban has argued that human beings undoubtedly possess an innate tendency to notice facial and other morphological features of people different from themselves, due to the social context of small-scale hunter-gatherer bands within which hominization occurred. However, while to our modern eyes this history may appear unfortunate, giving rise to racism, the tendency itself is not really linked to race as such (which is, in any case, a modern social construct). Kurzban has applied similar reasoning to other phenomena such as cooperation, morality, and mate choice (drawing out implications for modern speed dating!). Most recently, he has been a key player in the debate over the modularity of brain functions, a crucial assumption underlying evolutionary psychology. In 2003, Kurzban founded the Pennsylvania Laboratory for Experimental Evolutionary Psychology (PLEEP) at the University of Pennsylvania, which he continues to serve as Director. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Evolution and Human Behavior and is the author or co-author of around 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, as well as the author, co-author, or editor of seven books.

Dr. Monk has extensive media experience and is often sought out by media outlets to provide expert commentary and insight into criminal cases. She has appeared on episodes of true-crime television programs for major cable networks and podcasts worldwide. In her teaching philosophy, Dr. Monk states, “My goal for students leaving my classroom at the end of each semester is the same: for each student to have a better understanding of the complexities of the criminal justice system and to provide students with specific problem-solving skills. In short, the two pillars of my teaching philosophy are: (1) to foster critical thinking and; (2) to employ methods, such as student-centered pedagogy, so that students can illustrate their understanding of a particular topic. In that regard, I want to be the influential educator that fosters critical thinking on what can be emotionally difficult and controversial topics. With the increasing focus on criminal justice issues, like police-involved shootings, campus sexual assault, or the effects of mass incarceration on communities, my pedagogical vision is one focused on developing student's awareness of social inequality, their empathy towards others, and analytical understanding of power, violence, and abuse and how the criminal justice system relates to these issues. Ultimately, I would like to see my students use the skills developed at Cal State LA to improve the justice system.”

Episode #42: The Mysterious death of Brandon Embry

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 8, 2021 116:56

In the 42nd episode, I chat with Brandon Embry‘s mother, Sarah Lee!
