The powerful Mormon Church finds out a rare documents collector has uncovered something that makes Joseph Smith, the church's founder look very, very bad. The document, which comes to be known as The White Salamander Letter appears to be a letter from Martin Harris, Joseph Smith's right hand man, to WW Phelps in which Harris tells Phelps that Joseph did not get the golden plates from an angel, but from a talking lizard. What people do not know, is that the Mormon Church leaders have even buying documents for years. Anything that shines an unflattering light on early church history is purchased and secreted away by powerful leaders. The problem? The documents are all fake and the forger, Mark Hofmann, is in a lot of trouble and he knows it. So he decides to create a diversion. Bombs start going off throughout Salt Lake City and people are dying. And then, Mark himself is blown up.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/dark-hearts-with-stacy-lee-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

We're going to be discussing Mormons and crime. Steve Mayfield passed away on March 30, 2024. This interview is from 2018 where we discussed his collection of Mormon crime, both good guys and bad guys. For example, did you know that it was a Mormon FBI agent who arrested Patty Hearst following her participation of a bank robbery? We'll also discuss one of the most notorious spies in U.S, history, Robert Hanssen. Hanssen was also a Mormon FBI agent who passed secrets to the Russians. Of course, Steve also has a collection on the Mark Hofmann case, and we'll discuss his work with George Throckmorton who discovered how Mark Hofmann was forging documents. The "Dead Lee Scroll" is also a forgery we'll discuss, that hasn't been definitively tied to Hofmann. Check out our conversation... https://youtu.be/XiTvCBNx_Go transcript to follow Copyright © 2024 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Mormon Connection to Patty Hearst Kidnapping Introduction I'd like to introduce Steve Mayfield.  We'll talk about Mormon involvement in the Patty Hearst kidnapping case.  Did you know that it was a Mormon FBI agent that arrested Patty?  Check out our conversation… GT:        00:01:01             Welcome to Gospel Tangents. Steve:   00:01:03             Thank You. GT:        00:01:04             I'm excited to have Steve Mayfield here. He is a documentation collector and we're going to talk a little bit about Mark Hofmann. We're going to talk a little bit about the Mountain Meadows Massacre. We're going to talk a little bit about the FBI and Mormons. Steve:   00:01:31             Yes. GT:        00:01:32             Which I think will be a lot of fun. So, Steve has some amazing stories and so why don't you get us a little bit about your background? Steve:   00:01:36             Okay. GT:        00:01:37             How did you get involved in collecting? Steve:   00:01:39             Oh, gee. Well, I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area. For those interested in genealogy, I'm a seventh generation Latter-day Saint. So, my family history goes all the way back to Ohio in one family line and Nauvoo. And I've always had an interest in history. When I was in high school, my desire was to be a history teacher specifically, maybe teach seminary or institute. But when I was a senior in high school, this was way back in 1974. Most people weren't even around. We had one of these field trips to San Francisco and it included Golden Gate Park, the Chinese Tea Garden, an unofficial trip to the Haight-Ashbury, for those who remember that area, and also tour the FBI office. And I just fell in love with what people in the FBI did, all that work that I wanted to become the next was Efrem Zimbalist Jr, who happened to be the star of the TV show FBI back during the '60s. After I graduated from high school, I served my mission in Colorado-Nebraska. And in late 1972 I was assigned to way out east to Grand Island, Nebraska, which is kind of hard for person used to mountains when it's all flatland and wintery. One of the members of the local LDS district presidency out there was also the local FBI agent. So, we had a number of conversations. I indicated my interest in working with the FBI. And so, he suggested, well, get hired on as a clerk or clerical position with the bureau and then get a college degree and then you might become an agent. So, we put the paperwork in. I came home in February of '73 and then by July I had received my appointment to work as a file clerk in San Francisco. Steve:   00:03:27             I was there for four years. Of course, all this time I'm worried. I love history, but yet I'm in law enforcement. How can I intermingle? Well, my whole working career has been in law enforcement, but I seem to have come across historical occurrences in each of the agencies I worked for. When I was at the FBI, I was there during the attempted assassination of President Gerald Ford.

As we conclude the month of September, I wanted to conclude with the full interview of Dr. Michael Quinn. He passed away unexpectedly April 21, 2021. We also discuss his dealings with Mark Hofmann, LDS Succession, Women & Priesthood, and his role in the September Six. You won't want to miss this conversation.... https://youtu.be/gpi76Ri8n4c Michael Quinn Discusses Deseret Hemp Company Introduction I'm really excited to have Michael Quinn on the show.  In this first episode, we will get more acquainted with him.  We will also talk about the Deseret Hemp Company.  Yes, I said Hemp!  On the ballot this fall is a proposal to legalize medical marijuana here in Utah.  Michael Quinn will talk about a church-owned company that grew hemp right here in Utah!  Will they get back in the business?  Check out our conversation! The Interview GT:            00:00:33          Welcome to Gospel Tangents podcast. I'm really excited. I've got a real rare treat: Mike Quinn, historian Mike Quinn here in Salt Lake City. So, could you introduce yourself to the audience? Not everybody knows about Mormon history and might not know who you are. Can you give us a little bit about your background? Michael:  00:00:52          I was born in California and while I was there, we were always told it was the mission field. I became interested in Mormon history as a hobby when I was 16. And then, when I was in the military and after I graduated from BYU in English literature, I had time to reconsider what I wanted to do as a graduate student while I was in the army for three years and I decided to switch to history because my hobby had become too consuming. So, when I came out of the military, I went to the University of Utah to get a master's degree in history. And then I went from there to Yale. But before that I served as a research and writing assistant to Leonard Arrington while he was the Church Historian. After I got my Ph.D. in history from Yale, three months later, I was hired by the BYU campus to join it's a Department of History and I remained there for 12 years and then have been freelance historian or the term is independent scholar in the field, aside from occasional appointments. I had a two-year appointment at the University of Southern California. And then I had a one-year appointment at Yale University and that was my last academic appointment more than a dozen years ago. GT:            00:02:24          Oh wow, that's cool. So, for those who aren't familiar with your background, I know in the 1980s you wrote a chapter, I believe it was in Maxine Hanks' book.[1] Is that right?   Michael:  00:02:39          Yes, it was actually 1992 that it came out. It was called "Mormon Women Have Had the Priesthood Since 1843." And that caused a certain amount of controversy. GT:            00:02:53          Yeah. Could you, could you tell us a little bit more about that? Michael:  00:02:56          Maxine was excommunicated. I was excommunicated, and she was specifically told that she was excommunicated because of her book and I was told--I was given a list of three items showing my apostasy, a list provided by the stake president and the first item on the list was that essay. GT:            00:03:20          Okay. So you're one of the, I guess infamous September Six,[2] right? Michael:  00:03:26          That's correct. GT:            00:03:29          So,  the one thing that I think would strike most people is a little bit odd, I know I listened to your Radio West interview[3] earlier this week and you mentioned that you're still a believing Mormon. So, some people might think, well, if you're excommunicated,

The multiple "manifestos" allegedly ending the practice of polygamy (but not really). The lifting of the 1978 priesthood and temple ban against Mormons of African descent. Changes to the LDS temple ceremony over the years. Russell M. Nelson's condemnation of the use of the "Mormon" identity after Gordon B. Hinckley and Thomas S. Monson's strong support of the "Mormon" identity. The 2015 LGBTQ Exclusion policy, and the subsequent 2019 reversal of the policy/doctrine. The Mark Hofmann forgeries. Ashworth, someone who knew Mark W. Hofmann, well, or at least among those collectors and dealers that frequently bought and sold with him. Ashworth met, traded and wrangled with Hofmann, every week or every other week in person, meeting either at Hofmann's home or at a bench outside Walden Books in the Crossroads Plaza Mall in Salt Lake City (replaced in 2012 by the City Creek Center) for over four years.“Swinging for the fences,” as the old sports analogy goes, Hofmann was not content to forge and fool collectors of just Mormon, Western Americana and literary materials, he sought to deceive the nation's most distinguished and respected historical institutions, subject specialists, and rare book and antiquity dealers. He may very well have completed his diabolical transactions except for what unfolded in Salt Lake City in fall 1985, including the murders of Steven Christensen and Kathy Sheets. For a basic historical context and timeline see: David J. Whittaker, “The Hofmann Maze, the Book Review Essay With Chronology of the Hofmann Case,” BYU Studies, Vol. 29, Issue 1 (Jan 1, 1989).  Ashworth opens the discussion by explaining his first interaction with Hofmann in May 1981. Ashworth had been in the SLC bookstore and head shop, the Cosmic Aeroplane, the day before he met Hofmann. A friend who worked at the store mentioned that Mark Hofmann had come in the day before and sold what he described as samples of Joseph and Hyrum Smith's hair, which piqued Ashworth's interest. At the time, Ashworth had been a well-known collector for nearly 20 years, and so he called Hofmann the next day and introduced himself as a collector and had been hoping to track down a letter signed by Joseph Smith. As it turned out Hofmann said he just so happened to have a holographic letter, signed by Joseph Smith to his wife, Emma Smith. Ashworth made a deal to obtain the letter, and the following day he received it in the mail. Ashworth now unintentionally sees that he had “ordered up” this, and many other forgeries he acquired from Hofmann.  What was Hofmann's motive for his forgeries? According to a statement given by Dorie Hofmann, Mark Hofmann's wife, "he wanted publicity and money." According to Ashworth, he believes Hofmann was trying to negatively affect Mormon history, and by extension the church he had been born and raised in. Bio: Brent Ashworth is the owner of B. Ashworth's Inc., a Provo, Utah rare book, document, and artifact company, which opened in 2006. Ashworth has been a collector of rare historical materials since childhood. Concurrent to a lifetime of collecting, Ashworth has served as general counsel for a series of personal health and supplement corporations. Do you have a question? Write askahistorian@utah.gov.

Nurture and nature; two components in the development of individual differences. Understanding the root cause of abuse may help in the emotional healing process and provide an avenue of forgiveness on a deeper level resulting in better mental health for generations to come. Introduction to Loose Cannons A while back I watched Keep Sweet, Pray and Obey, a documentary mini-series that focused on the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, an offshoot of mainstream Mormonism, and its leader Warren S. Jeffs. It was shocking to say the least. Following that documentary, I saw Murder Among the Mormons, a true crime documentary miniseries following Mark Hofmann, one of the most notable forgers in history, who created forgeries related to the Latter Day Saint movement. So when I read the book Loose Cannons: A Memoir of Mania and Mayhem in a Mormon Family, the subject matter didn't surprise me, although it did sadden me. There was a connection to those documentaries I'd seen. Diana Cannon-Ragsdale's father worked in the district attorneys office during the time of salamander letters. His journals, along with her mothers' journals during psychological therapy, gave Diana insight into the poor emotional health of her parents. Their mental illnesses had a devastating impact in Diana's own life. Like ripples in a pond, that impact touched the lives of her own children. She was determined to find healing on her journey to stop the pain from reaching her grandchildren and future generations. Diana now advocates for those who cope with mental illness, were raised by dysfunctional families, and must overcome abusive situations. She details her challenging journey in her memoir, Loose Cannons. When Generations of Your Loved Ones Have Suffered While Diana's father claims to have never been disciplined, he was more than a little heavy handed when it came to raising his own children. Perhaps because boundaries make kids feel safe and secure. Raising a child without boundaries or discipline often leads to narcissism. Parental boundaries allow children to grow up, to understand they can't always get their way, to be more patient and mature. Knowing that there is a limit to how much comfort and pleasure their parents will provide, children can learn to cope with disappointment; as an added bonus, the mild disappointment often brought about by boundaries can also help children to develop empathy — perhaps for others who have discomfort and disappointment. Understanding the meaning of "limits" allows kids to be more connected to the real world.Healthy Boundaries in Parenting In addition, Diana's mother had a mental illness that left her checked-out most of the time, and later led to complete abandonment. Undiagnosed Mental Illness Led To Abuse Her parent's undiagnosed mental illnesses were the root cause of their unhealthy obsessions and behaviors. As a result, Diana and her siblings faced abuse and neglect as part of their daily life. The level of neglect was so extreme that she was often hungry as her parent's barely fed them. An older brother learned to prepare spaghetti so they'd have something to eat. In fact, it was so bad that she didn't realize they weren't a poor family until much later in life. The reason they weren't fed had nothing to do with lack of finances. Read the memoir Loose Cannons: A Memoir of Mania and Mayhem in a Mormon Family. I've learned there is no such thing as a lie, it always reveals itself eventually. I feel lies and secrets are far more damaging than truth! Remove the Source of Emotional Pain Likely one of the best ways to begin emotional healing is to remove yourself from the source of emotional pain if possible. In Diana's case, there were a number of years she chose to put distance between herself and her parents. Begin Emotional Healing Painful emotions can be a detriment to your overall well-being.

When Joseph Smith was returning from his unsuccessful trip to Washington DC, where he tried to convince Martin Van Buren to intervene on behalf of the Saints, he made a stop in Philadelphia. There he made an address in a synagogue and it lead to many baptisms and the church began to grow in the city. While staying as a guest at a home, he signed a vistors log and wrote a short statement about virtue and a blessing to the household for letting him and his company stay there. This is the only known fully handwritten item by Joseph that is in private hands. Brent also details his twelve year effort to finally acquire this special document, and he describes how he ended up buying it from Mark Hofmann! But the truth caught up with Hofmann one fateful day in 1985, as two innocent people lost their lives.  We are joined by award-winning co-director and producer of Murder Among the Mormons, Tyler Measom. His previous work includes Leaving the Cult: Sons of Perdition (2010), An Honest Liar (2014) and Biography: I Want My MTV (2019).  Tyler directed this docuseries with Jared Hess, who is best known for his films Napoleon Dynamite (2004), Nacho Libre (2006) and Gentlemen Broncos (2009). Tyler talks about how he and Jared came to turn this story into a docuseries, as well as what they discovered about Mark Hoffman and the nature of belief. In the process we also learn about getting a film idea to the big screen.  “The power he must have felt to create and change history, to alter what millions of people believe, and know and pray to every day – to have the power to change that in your basement is a remarkable feeling I suspect.” – Tyler Measom Time Stamps: 05:38 - What the series Murder Among the Mormons is about. 08:19 - Why the story wasn't heavily publicised at the time. 09:41 - How co-directors Tyler and Jared made the story so gripping. 11:20 - The boom period there was for collecting Mormon antiquities.  13:04 - How Mark Hofmann was such a successful forger.  16:02 - How Hofmann started his career in forging.  20:56 - Why he went into a life of deceit. 25:33 - Why Tyler and Jared decided to make a documentary about Hofmann.  30:42 - How a documentary goes from a brainstorming session to being on screen.  36:36 - The way a docuseries format gives the filmmakers more freedom.  37:49 - The willingness of people to be interviewed for the film.  41:45 - How they knew the film would be so successful.  45:59 - The reasons Mark conned Mormons.  49:01 - How Tyler kept his own beliefs regarding Mormonism separate from the film.  50:24 - What the film says about belief.  51:36 - The next projects Tyler is working on.   Resources: Murder Among the Mormons (2021) Leaving the Cult: Sons of Perdition, a book by Tyler Measom Billy Wilder's 10 Screenwriting Tips This is Distorted Alamo Pictures Connect with Tyler Measom: Website LinkedIn Instagram Facebook Connect with Factual America: Facebook Instagram Twitter   Connect with Matthew Sherwood: Facebook LinkedIn Twitter   More From Factual America: Connect with Factual America: Facebook Instagram Twitter   Connect with Matthew Sherwood: Facebook LinkedIn Twitter   More From Factual America: Moment of Truth: The Murder of Michael Jordan's Father McMillion$: McDonalds' Monopoly Fraud Revisited The Hart Family Tragedy

We're continuing our discussion of the Mormon settlement in Zodiac, Texas.  Historian Melvin Johnson describes reading the registers from RLDS Archives that document the many temple ordinances that were completed.  He also told me that there was more than one Endowment House in Utah! https://youtu.be/3eTPO3tnKvg GT :  Oh, 1874, so, essentially, what we're saying here is between 1846 and 1874, at least in the LDS church, there was no temple to do this. But they would do some of these ordinances outside the temple, on a case by case basis, essentially. Mel:   Correct, and then, of course, the Endowment House was built to be a bridge between that and when the temples came online. Orson Hyde was very jealous of that, so he had an endowment house built down in Sanpete County. GT:   Oh, wow. I didn't know that. Mel:   Yeah, there were a number of them. And maybe the Endowment House was built earlier than what I think and I need to look at that... He also discusses a recent forgery on the Zodiac Temple. Mel:   There is a forgery called Zodiac Temple records, Rituals and Rites by John Hawley. It's 32 pages written of these supposed rites and rituals in the Zodiac Temple. One: John Hawley was not the clerk of the temple. His brother-in-law, John Young was. And secondly, Zodiac was like Kirtland and Nauvoo and early Utah, in that all of the ritual and rites ceremony was oral. It was not written down until 1874 for the opening of the St. George temple. Does it have ties to Mark Hofmann? Check out our conversation…. Historian Mel Johnson tells more about the Zodiac Temple in Texas and the Wightites. Joseph Smith wrote Article of Faith 8: “We Believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly.”  But has anyone ever identified these errors?  BYU professor Dr. Thomas Wayment has identified known biblical errors, such as this one! https://youtu.be/KOTZYeVj8ig Thom:  1st John 5:7, that verse is forged in our Bible. When you go to Sunday School and you read 1st John 5:7, there is no scholar on the planet, I believe that would say that verse is original. We know when it's forged. We know why it's forged and so that's comes out. GT:   See, I've done a lot of Mark Hofmann stuff. So, this is fascinating to me. So tell me about that. What does the verse say and why do you say it is forged? Thom:  It's a trinitarian verse, and what I mean by that is it says that there is God the Father, the son, and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one. And so, the verse is forged, and I should have looked up the exact date on this.* But, we know exactly the century when this happens. There's no manuscript prior to that. And when it happens, we believe it's probably written in the margin at first, like "This is what this means," or something and somebody migrates that into the text. So, in our King James [Bible], it's a fascinating story how we have it. The person who put together the Greek text for our King James Bible went to his local ecclesiastical leaders and said, "This verse isn't in my manuscripts." And they produce a manuscript for him that has it, that's a forgery itself. And say, "You better put this in." We are confident this is a forged verse. This is going to be a very cool conversation. We'll talk about biblical errors known by scholars, and which versions of the Bible are the best.  This is a conversation you won't want to miss!  Check out our conversation…. What did you think? ... Dorie: The plea bargain. He was telling his dad. He was telling me, and he was telling his dad "I'm innocent, I'm innocent, I'm innocent." And, his dad's like, "Why are you going to plead guilty to this if you're innocent? You don't plead guilty." And I'm going, "What is it?" Same thing. "What is it you're doing?" And he told both of us a story, which didn't make sense to me, but i was like, "I don't understand this. I don't understand it. I can do nothing." I could never make him do anything. And that's the truth. I could never make him do anything. So, again, I [had this] out of control, powerless feeling with him. And so what he told his dad and I, what he said was, "There's a reason why I'm doing this. It's going to protect you and the kids from being killed." That's what he said. I don't know. See, it's dramatic enough that it's like, okay. "But I can't talk about it. I can't tell you. I can't." See. It's another big story, you know? "But I'm innocent. But I'm going to plead guilty. But I'm doing it to protect my thing. I'm a such a good guy. I'm doing it to protect my family." That's the story. So yeah. So that's what he said. GT:  Curt Bench, Shannon Flynn, even Michael Quinn. Were you concerned for your safety? Because none of these people believed that it was Mark initially either. Dorie: Yeah. GT: Were you concerned? Dorie:  I wasn't until Mark called me. He called me and said, "You need to leave the house because you may be in danger." So he's telling me this big old lie, scaring me....I remember just running out so fast that I didn't even close the dishwasher. I remember just running, leaving so fast. And then [I was] talking to Mark later and he laughed when I told him, "Yeah, I left. I grabbed everything." "Well you didn't really need to," or something like that. He laughed at me because I got scared. I remember that. GT:  That struck you as pretty odd? Dorie:  Yes. It was like, "What? And why did you tell me? Why are you telling me I need to leave? If you didn't want me to leave? Why are you? Why? What?" Because I did not understand him. What's going on? And it's like, if I'm not in danger, why are you telling me I'm in danger? I was.  And I remember thinking, "I have to do something. I got to go out." And they said, "You can't leave the room! You can't leave this room!" And it's like, "Yes, I can! And having this calm, peace come over me that is still there today that I still feel today, calm, peace, saying "Everything's going to be okay." ... GT:  This kind of boggles my mind. That adversity is important for us to have, to be able to learn what we came here to learn. And it's important. And I don't know how to explain this very well. It's like be grateful for the adversity. Be grateful for the adversity because it's because it's what's bringing you awareness and it's bringing you to where you want to be rather than saying, "Oh no, that shouldn't have happened." GT:  The Book of Mormon tells us there must needs be opposition on all things. Is that how you think of it? Dorie:  Yeah, kind of. And it's because I know that I wouldn't be where I am today without that. And I am grateful for it. I'm grateful for all those experiences and I'm grateful that all the way through it, I can pinpoint places where I was assisted by that higher source. What was it like to be married to Mark Hofmann? Were there deceptions while they were married? What was it like to be gaslighted by Mark?  Dorie Olds answers those questions. https://youtu.be/Q6EUnE-bpec Dorie:  Gaslighting is where, in the movie Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman and I can't remember Charles Boyer, maybe? Charles Boyer had a plan. He had murdered Ingrid Bergman's aunt, the character that she played. And then he was after some jewels and so he courted this woman purposely with an agenda and then he kept doing things to make her think she was crazy, to make her think that she wasn't seeing things straight to really confuse her. And that's what I feel like was happening with me. with Mark. On the surface it looked like certain things were happening. But underneath, I was definitely being played with and I wasn't conscious enough initially to know. It's like, what is wrong with me? What's going on? Why ain't I remembering correctly? Why aren't I? I made it about me, and not that he was doing something to me. ... He would tell his parents "Dorie made me do it," and I didn't know this was happening. And then I would tell something. Well, his parents say, "Well how about this and this," and I would tell something and then Mark, later we would be by ourselves with stuff and he'd get really angry. I'd be really in trouble. He'd be yelling at me and then it was like, "Well what did I do?" I just told the truth. Well that was the problem. Because see? He told his parents, he was already telling other people different stories, and then I would come in. I wouldn't be prepped. I wouldn't be told, "This is the story I've told because I don't want to tell the truth about what we did. I want to make it your fault," which is what he was doing the whole time. And so I would tell something and I wouldn't be believed. Or it's like I was living in this double world. Like what is going on here? Like being in Alice in Wonderland. What's going on? I'm telling the truth. I just told him a story. Why is it that I'm in trouble? Why is it that people are mad at me? Why is it that there was this whole thing going on? It's like what is happening? So, I think a year after I was married, I think I got more used to it, but not totally understanding it. It wasn't until later. It's like, no wonder I felt crazy because I felt crazy being told these things. And people would call on the phone and they'd yell at me. "Well is Mark there?" "No." "Well na-na-na-na-na-na-na." I mean, I'd get the brunt of all this anger because they're mad at him. And then I'd say, "Well, you need to call this person because they're mad." "Oh no, they're not mad at me. They were fine." He brought a Bible and he said to me, "Well look in this Bible." And it's like, "Here, look through this," or "Look through this thing." And I remember thinking, "Well, I'm tired. I'm back home from work. I'm tired. I don't really want to do that." And I kind of put it aside. And, I remember having this funny feeling. Why do you want me to do this? Because it was like he was really insistent. "Will you look through this?" And so I did look through this and there in the pages was a thing that was stuck. Part of me was like, "Wow, there's something in here." And part of me was like, "I have a funny feeling about this. Something's going on that I don't understand," in the process of that. I went to him and said, "There's something stuck in here." And he's like, "Oh, what a surprise! I wonder what that is!" You know? And of course, he'd set that up so that he'd put it in there so I would find it. I would be the provenance. It wouldn't be him. It would be something that could be documented that in a way he had nothing to do with it because he didn't find it. I found it, and he had just handed me this book. So that's the story of how that [came about.] It was the Anthon Transcript and those symbols that were in there. That was glued inside. And then he took them out and he took it from there. And I was the provenance for that. I was his. He was using me to be the provenance of that story. I also asked how Dorie met Mark? Dorie: I was attending Utah State University. I had gone to Dixie College for two years. And then moved up to Logan and was going to do two more years there. And in the apartment complex where I lived, he lived upstairs. So I was on the second level, I think he was on third level. And so that's how I got to know him was he lived in the same apartment complex. GT: Ok, you didn't have any same classes together or anything like that? Dorie: No, I didn't have any classes together. I didn't know this initially, but he had broken up with his [girlfriend.] He had gotten engaged and had broken up right before school started with this woman that he was engaged to and she would come up and they would sit in, I think it was her car, sit in her car and make out and I'd watch them make out. GT: Really? Dorie: So, I don't know. It wasn't anything that was impressed. That was the first thing was, who's that guy and what are they doing? And how ridiculous. And you know, it wasn't any like love at first sight. No! Or to be together. It was none of that. That took time to go to that place. Yeah, because typically I would talk about things that weren't available that were central, like I published an article about the Council of Fifty minutes and the Council of Fifty's history and I commented about what I thought was in those minutes that I had not seen of the Nauvoo Council of Fifty. And so, I would do this about other documents like I wrote about the blessings that Joseph Smith, III had received from his father and that obviously was something that Mark Hofmann paid attention to. I also asked Michael if he was worried about being targeted by bombs. Michael: I had a friend who worked with the state attorney, U.S. attorney was in his office and this long-time friend of mine called and said, "Don't go back home, go and stay with us because no one would think of us," him and his wife. And so, he provided more than a week I think a week or two weeks of residence for me during this period. And then he told me, "When you go back, look under your car for wires," and for years after this, following his advice, anytime I got a package I wasn't expecting, I would take it to the post office and run it through their x-ray machine to see if there were any machines in it. Now the question was if they took it to a trial, how many trials would there be? Because the prosecuting attorney said that if they would have gone forward, there would have been a trial on the documents, but they couldn't prove a connection from the documents to the motive for the murder. And that if they had to do the murder separate, that they were afraid they would lose, because they wouldn't be able to prove a connection for the motive to the forgery of the documents. I talked with Stott, the prosecuting attorney about this afterwards one day, I don't remember. I ran into him at some kind of history thing and he asked me what I thought would have been their chances of a conviction if they had gone forward? I'd have gone forward because yeah, I think you could have nailed the guy on every count. Because they were convinced that there would have to be a division of the trials on the different forgeries and the murderer, that it would be hard to get the death sentence. And if you're not going to get the death sentence, then isn't it better to negotiate a settlement where he has to fess up to everything and get that cleared off the table and give him life?  Well he wasn't actually given life. And so this would raise questions about the whole scenario of how the Book of Mormon really came about. Was it a conspiracy of Rigdon and Smith or something, you know? And so, here is this BYU professor challenging us that, "I don't think you can prove the Cowdery defense is a legitimate pamphlet by Cowdrey." So Jerald got into a real study of that and finally concluded that Anderson was right. The document, you can't find anyone mentioning the document before around 1900. And it seemed odd that David Whitmer, Cowdery's brother-in-law wouldn't have mentioned such a pamphlet when Whitmer wrote "An Address to All Believers in Christ" in 1887. Whitmer didn't mention this. And so, we couldn't. We did a lot of research trying to figure out if the Cowdery pamphlet could have been printed at the date it said in the town it said. I went up to the U and did research on printing presses in this town at the time period and, you know, a lot of minutiae. Anyways, Jerald finally concluded that Anderson was right. There is no evidence that the Cowdery pamphlet goes back to Cowdery. In doing that research. He had looked at that on wording in the Cowdery pamphlet and he noticed that there were phrases in it that were just like phrases in--Cowdery did a series of letters in the Messenger and Advocate back when he was a faithful Mormon, and Jerald says somebody used the Cowdery letters from the Messenger and Advocate to make this pamphlet. They've tried to imitate Cowdery's writing style by taking phrases from these letters. Although they were in a different context, but the phrasing of Cowdery from these letters to make this document. So, he'd already been down this trail before on trying to figure out through analysis of the content of whether it could really be a forgery or something that the author would have really written. And so, when he looks at the Salamander Letter, he says, "These are phrases. It's too pat. There are phrases here that are lifted from E.D. Howe from this other early book to make something sound like it's Martin Harris, but it's too pat in the picking up of phrases." We also talk about the term "anti-Mormon." GT:  a lot of people call you an anti-Mormon. What do you think of that term? Sandra: I don't like the term because I think it implies an animosity towards the whole group. It's like saying you're anti-black would imply against blacks in general. I don't see myself as anti-Mormon. I'm not against the Mormon people. I mean that's my family. I still have Mormon family that are active, so I don't see myself as anti-Mormon. I'm anti-Mormonism. Check out our conversation with Sandra Tanner….  Don't forget to check out part 1 and part 2!
