George Toma, 94, has been doing groundskeeping since he was 12 years old. That's 82 years! The man nicknamed, the "Sodfather" and "the Nitty Gritty Dirt Man" joins me on this episode to talk about being the head groundskeeper in Kansas City at Municipal Stadium for colorful owner Charlie Finley (in the 1950's and 60's), then Royals Stadium.  He has advised and been a part of the grounds installation and upkeep at the past 50 some Super Bowls, more ballparks and stadiums than we have time to mention, the '84 and '96 Olympics and the 1994 World Cup. And well into his 9th decade of living, he still consults.Support the show

Municipal Stadium in Kansas City.” Maintained by none other than our guest today, Mr. George Toma.At age 28, in 1957, he became the head groundskeeper for the Kansas City Athletics of Major League Baseball, a job he accepted precisely because the A's and Municipal Stadium had such a notoriously poor history of groundskeeping.Triple Duty:  How difficult was it to maintain Municipal Stadium when it was housed by the Chiefs, Royals, & The Spurs. Specialty of Astroturf maintenance VS grass - How does one study astroturf and it's maintenanceWitkowski - What is the field you are the most proud of for a game? On the latest Royalman Report, we mixed a bit of past, present and future. Past because we talked with Jeff Logan about Kansas City baseball history and upcoming events for the Kansas City Baseball Historical Society. If you're a fan of the old KC A's or other old teams, you'll want to hear his segment. He also shared with us the fact that George Toma doesn't stop moving (probably why he's going into the baseball Hall of Fame). Present because we talked about who might be the face of the Royals franchise, as well as expectations for the team going into next year. Future because we put a couple of youngsters into the show's spotlight, as 7-year-old J.P. ("Little Frenchy") gave an interview with 9-year-old Brett. Baseball really is a kid's game, after all.
