James Watson died, and brilliant as his contribution to science was, he also had some very problematic views on race and women. The Church of Scientology seems to be in decline even if they try their best to deny it, claiming huge (but questionable) numbers on their recent big conference. On this week's episode, John Maraganore, Yaron Werber, Ami Fadia, and special guests STAT's Allison DeAngelis and Endpoints News' Drew Armstrong kick things off with an overview of the latest FDA staffing changes, including long-time oncology chief Richard Pazdur's appointment as the new CDER director, a move the co-hosts view as positive for the industry and a sign of potential stability. Next, the group breaks down the FDA's new ‘Plausible Mechanism Pathway', designed to accelerate certain personalized therapies to market when traditional trials aren't feasible. Allison then shares insights from her reporting on the exclusive MAHA Summit held earlier this week -- an invite-only gathering of top HHS officials and leading biotech executives. In data news, the co-hosts discuss Alkermes' Phase 2 narcolepsy trial, Cogent's Phase 3 gastrointestinal stromal tumor results, and CRISPR's cholesterol data. As one bidding war ends, another begins as Alkermes' move to acquire Avadel faces competition from Lundbeck, who offered a $2.25 billion, rivaling Alkermes' initial $2.1 billion offer. Drew Armstrong also overviewed his reporting on the Novo Nordisk-Pfizer bidding war, noting both companies' obesity setbacks and their search for new directions. Deal-making conversations continues with Merck's $9.2 billion acquisition of Cidara Therapeutics, and Day One Therapeutics' $285 million acquisition of Mersana Therapeutics. The episode concludes with a discussion on the passing of genetic pioneer James Watson and Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks' appearance on The Cheeky Pint podcast. *This episode aired on November 14, 2025.

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2025 4:06

Composer Peter Hugh White and librettist Clare Heath join host Rosie Millard in front of a London audience to explore why the story of chemist and x-ray crystallographer Rosalind Franklin and the race to uncover the structure of DNA makes such a compelling subject for an opera. We hear excerpts that capture the contrasting personalities at the centre of this scientific drama — James Watson, the brash young researcher at the University of Cambridge; Francis Crick, his more measured collaborator; and Maurice Wilkins, an anxious biophysicist uneasy about being outshone by his brilliant colleague, Franklin. It's a story of ambition, rivalry, and betrayal: Franklin's departure from King's College London and the subsequent publication of the double helix model by Watson and Crick, which was built on insights from her work — yet without giving her due recognition. This episode began with a discussion of 2009 as a watershed year before major belief in diseases tied to genetics began to be replaced by ones tied to mitochondria, food and the role of insulin. Michael Krasny brought up the link of diabetes to genetics and Dr. Bob Lustig indicated that the causation factor is only 15%, whereupon he talked about genes and obesity and different kinds of fat and fat and sugar followed by Krasny asking his reaction to the appointment of Robert F Kennedy Junior as the head of HHS. Dr. Lustig revealed that he refused an offer to head NIH.A listener asked Dr. Lustig about glyphosate in the food supply and another about processed food in school lunches, which prompted Krasny to ask about processed and ultra-processed food. Dr. Lustig spoke of food industry strategies and the USDA. Krasny then asked him about eating habits and lifespan in Japan as well as fructose and calories and Dr. Lustig spoke about body temperature being down in the U.S. and a connection to mitochondrial dysfunction. Krasny went back to an interview he did with Nobel laureate James Watson in which Watson mentioned longevity and his Norwegian mitochondria and Krasny then asked Lustig about sugar and fruit, which prompted Lustig to pinpoint sugar as a primary cause of Alzheimer's and to speak about ways to mitigate fructose. Lustig then spoke of the effects of sugar in a 1953 UK study which followed sugar rationing. Michael Krasny brought up arguments against "the demonization of sugar" and seeing it as toxic and addictive and Dr. Lustig responded with an adamant defense of the dangers of sugar, including its addictive power and its toxicity.

Deciphering the structure of DNA was as complex as the double helix itself. On 28th February, 1953, Dr. James Watson and Dr. Francis Crick rushed to the pub and announced to their fellow drinkers in The Eagle, Cambridge that they had just found “the secret of life”.  But their work would not have been possible without the uncredited contribution of Dr. Rosalind Franklin - whose photographs of the X-ray diffraction pattern of DNA were the first to reveal its three-dimensional structure. And it was her colleague, Dr Maurice Wilkins, who first brought Franklin's work to the attention of Watson and Crick. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider how it came to be that Crick's wife, Odile; drew the iconic depiction of the structure published in Nature; explain why *technically* Dr Franklin didn't even have a degree; and recall how James Watson's legacy was tainted by his bitter and snide memoir, ‘The Double Helix'...  Further Reading: • ‘Double-Helix Structure of DNA' (ThoughtCo, 2020): https://www.thoughtco.com/double-helix-373302 • ‘The Geek Atlas - 128 Places Where Science and Technology Come Alive, By John Graham-Cumming' (O'Reilly Media, 2009): https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/The_Geek_Atlas/rXH0AQAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=crick+watson+eagle+1953&pg=PA267&printsec=frontcover • ‘Rosalind Franklin: DNA's unsung hero - Cláudio L. Lots to discuss on the pod today. As you know we're filming the pod for YouTube, and this is week two. We're still ironing out the bugs, and we had a big bug this week, so no YouTube show this week - but we'll sort it for next week.Onto the pod - Mark bumped into Marc Leishman a day or so ago, after Marc played in Warrnambool at the weekend with his Dad and Son. Nick and Mark discuss Marc's near win at St Andrews, and other Aussie performances at the venue.Nick and Mark reveal why pros never ask another pro how they played, apparently one of the unwritten rules of being a pro is to never tell other pros about your round. We discuss the likelihood, or not, of LIV players being welcomed into The Players Championship in March. Outside of those already exempt, will they be welcomed in? Mark asks Nick if there will be room made for them. What about PING's Brian Campbell winning the Mexican Open. His first win in 178 events. And he did it in well, perhaps with a bit of luck on one hole in the playoff.Nick and Mark discuss chipping with a strong top hand grip, which some players do, but it is rare, and not ideal. Mark puts Nick on the spot to say what current tour pros have an orthodox, or unorthodox swing. One tour pro's swing, according to Nick and Mark, when you look at it would not make the Kingston Heath pennant team.Speaking of swings - Nick has brought a video in of Akie Iwai, whose swing he loves. We watch a video of Tiger Woods and what he calls the 'most embarrassing moment of his golfing career'. Mark is angry over something that has happened at a golf course in Wales.Nick's Top 5 (a Top 6 actually) is on players who had a lucky break which helped them win a major.Plenty of feedback, lots on our chat with Bradley Hughes and James Watson - watch them at the links. And we run through some entries, and announce the winner of our caption contest - who wins $200 to spend at Golf Clearance Outlet.Heaps of results to run through with the PING global results from Nick, interrupted after Mark's phone decides to play a role in the show. On November 16, 1979, Boston, MA cab driver Jeffrey Boyajian was killed after suffering five gunshots to the head. Another cab driver came forward claiming to have seen the crime, and through various questionable hypnotic sessions he identified James Watson and his 16 year old co-defendant Frederick Clay as the killers. Despite a total lack of physical evidence tying James to the crime, he was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Since the discovery of the double helix by Francis Crick, James Watson and Rosalind Franklin in the 1950s, human knowledge of DNA and genetics has grown almost immeasurably. We now know that genes affect every aspect of our lives, from our appearance, our health and even our personality. But more than this, our genes are a living document of our evolutionary past, an ancient document that, if read properly, can reveal almost everything about how we came to be how we are. In this episode, we're joined by the evolutionary biologist and multi-million selling author Richard Dawkins to speak about his latest book The Genetic Book of the Dead: A Darwinian Reverie. He tells us how different species of animals hit on the same evolutionary strategies despite being separated by multiple continents, how natural selection doesn't necessarily always follow the perfect path and how a scientist of the future may one day be able to read the genetic code of any living animal like a book to uncover its entire evolutionary past.
