Are you ready to take full ownership of your life and rethink alcohol for good? Adam Hoefler was, and he joins Patrick on this week's episode of The Alcohol ReThink podcast where he shares how he has radically rethought the role of alcohol in his life. Growing up Adam was surrounded by alcohol and remembers making a choice to never drink, that was until college came along and it rapidly changed everything. After Adams drinking had become the only way to get things done, he knew that a change was needed but was struggling to find a way out. Join Patrick and Adam in this interview, where Adam shares his alcohol rethink journey. He talks about how and why he started drinking, how it became all-consuming and then how he managed to undo 10 years of falsely created beliefs around alcohol to go alcohol-free and loving it. Enjoy!  Here are some of the cool topics they get into: - How his mind was wrapped around alcohol and drinking beer became the only way to function - Recognising something was wrong with his drinking but his brain wouldn't let him change - How resistance in being told what to do showed up as rebellion - Changing one habit creates a domino effect of change - Social expectations to drink at college - How the mind misinterprets alcohol as being important to survival and formed false beliefs - Gamifying his drinking and seeing it as a challenge to drink and still be productive - The challenge with rationalising how he was living his life as a way to keep drinking - From letting alcohol fulfill his life for 10 years and take him away from ideal health, to taking 6 months to get back where he wants to be - Understanding when impatience comes up and the power of providing yourself with perspective - The awesome effect of taking full ownership for rethinking alcohol - The strength in focusing on how good he was feeling and not wanting to let it go - Opening up your mind to think about your thoughts #awareness - The positive changes that have happened since Adam stopped drinking alcohol  Connect with Patrick: To find out how Patrick can help you stop drinking and create an awesome life without alcohol, book a free one hour consultation. Since 1991, Apple has included Hoefler Text on every Mac. Ideal Sans, Knockout, Archer, Verlag, and Sentinel—are a few more of Hoefler's well known typefaces —each is steeped in history and timelessly beautiful. It's no wonder that Jonathan was featured in the Netflix series Abstract, which explores design and creativity, as he is truly a typography legend. As part of our series on design history, we talk with Jonathan about his typographic influences, his philosophical views on the value of presentation and why he views entrepreneurship as an invitation, and some of the themes in his work like “Unfinished Business” and “Conservation and Preservation.” This is the first episode of our 10th season of Design Better. We'll be continuing our exploration of design history and the creative process, but also adding new themes like how we can design a better future, and the secrets of living a more creative life, with guests like potter and designer Jonathan Adler. Bio Jonathan Hoefler (pronounced "HEFF-ler") is a typeface designer, typographer, writer, and inventor, and the creator of some of the world's most influential fonts such as Gotham, Knockout, Mercury, Sentinel, and Hoefler Text. He founded the distinguished type foundry Hoefler&Co in 1989, which he sold in 2021, after publishing more than eleven hundred original tyepfaces. SpQR: A Sparse-Quantized Representation for Near-Lossless LLM Weight Compression

Papers Read on AI

Recent advances in large language model (LLM) pretraining have led to high-quality LLMs with impressive abilities. By compressing such LLMs via quantization to 3-4 bits per parameter, they can fit into memory-limited devices such as laptops and mobile phones, enabling personalized use. However, quantization down to 3-4 bits per parameter usually leads to moderate-to-high accuracy losses, especially for smaller models in the 1-10B parameter range, which are well-suited for edge deployments. To address this accuracy issue, we introduce the Sparse-Quantized Representation (SpQR), a new compressed format and quantization technique which enables for the first time near-lossless compression of LLMs across model scales, while reaching similar compression levels to previous methods. SpQR works by identifying and isolating outlier weights, which cause particularly-large quantization errors, and storing them in higher precision, while compressing all other weights to 3-4 bits, and achieves relative accuracy losses of less than 1% in perplexity for highly-accurate LLaMA and Falcon LLMs. This makes it possible to run 33B parameter LLM on a single 24 GB consumer GPU without any performance degradation at 15% speedup thus making powerful LLMs available to consumer without any downsides. SpQR comes with efficient algorithms for both encoding weights into its format, as well as decoding them efficiently at runtime. Specifically, we provide an efficient GPU inference algorithm for SpQR which yields faster inference than 16-bit baselines at similar accuracy, while enabling memory compression gains of more than 4x. 2023: Tim Dettmers, Ruslan Svirschevski, Vage Egiazarian, D. I., Pena de la Sancha, P., Schauer, S., Reicher, H., Sattler, W., Breinbauer, R., Schweiger, M., Espenshade, P. J., Zechner, R., Hoefler, G., Vesely, P. W. Abstract: Sterol Regulatory Element-Binding Protein-1c (SREBP-1c) is translated as an inactive precursor-protein that is proteolytically activated to promote fatty-acid (FA) biosynthesis, when unsaturated (u)FAs are scarce. During fasting, however, lipogenesis is low, and adipose-tissue lipolysis supplies the organism with FAs. Adipose TriGlyceride Lipase (ATGL) is the rate-limiting enzyme for lipolysis, and it preferentially hydrolyzes uFAs. Therefore, we hypothesized that ATGL-derived FAs may suppress the proteolytic activation of SREBP-1c in the liver. Here we show that (i) SREBP-1c is inactive during fasting but active after refeeding, (ii) uFA species liberated by ATGL suppress SREBP-1c activation in vitro, (iii) SREBP-1c is hyperactivated in livers of mice lacking ATGL, and (iv) pharmacological inhibition of ATGL selectively activates SREBP-1c in hepatocytes. Our findings highlight an ATGL/SREBP-1c axis, instrumental to coordinate lipogenesis and lipolysis, whose homeostatic regulation is crucial to avoid severe diseases including diabetes, cardiomyopathy, and even cancer. “We got in early on the digital brand stuff. We found it extremely important for us to know why we are who we are and tell that story consistently over time." Jordan Gielser, Creative Services & Brand Manager of Super Bowl LIV Champion Kansas City Chiefs, joined the podcast to discuss his lengthy career working for a historic NFL franchise. Jordan found his way into the Chiefs organization after majoring in commercial art in college; however, after a seasonal gig with the team he would find himself leaving sports design for a b2b industrial gig. Eventually, he returned to the Chiefs and would climb from junior graphic designer to creative services & brand manager which is his role today. The Chiefs had many successful campaigns this season including their 2019 Mexico City Campaign; which we discuss in depth. Jordan also touches on developing the creative for the historic 60th Season of Chiefs Football and how they were able to balance a completely different look for the season paying homage to the past but remaining true to the current brand. Lastly, Jordan shares his unique, behind-the-scenes insight into what goes into working as a creative at the Super Bowl. From the planning, to the potential unused creative in case of a loss, to the gameday duties; we get a rare glimpse into hectic weeks heading to up to and following the biggest event in sports. CM09: How a small change can make a big difference to your user experience w/ Jordan Bell

Custom Made

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 11, 2018 42:53

We are on episode #009 of Custom Made, and today we are talking Jordan Bell, typeface designer at Hoefler & Co. in New York City. We are discussing how a small change can make a big difference to your brand’s user experience by exploring the world of typeface design. The logo or a mark of a brand is really important and tends to get the spotlight. But a brand’s typeface is possibly the most interactive element of a brand - whenever we open up an app, read an article, or navigate a UI we are generally looking at a lot of text. And so why not have that element we are interacting so much with be unique and relatable to that brand. Also, with the globalization of technology, the growth of internet access allowing new audiences to discover your brand, and the diversity of devices or ways in which a user can engage with a brand - the necessity of creating and updating your brand’s style is critical. Here at Dialexa when we are working with a client who has developed various applications over many years, or has grown through acquisition, they tend not to have a consistent branding and so we are brought in to help them integrate, modernize, or replace these platforms and develop a new more consistent user interface. This new look and feel is typically built out from a design system. A Design System is more than a style guide or ui pattern library. It’s a product that consists of various components, including its typeface, for your designers and developers that enables them to design and build better experiences at scale. Though originally trained as a graphic designer in New Mexico and his home state of Texas, Jordan became interested in type design and how it performs in various contexts. To pursue this interest, he left the mountains of Santa Fe to attend Reading University in England where he earned his MA in Typeface Design program in 2014. While at Reading, Jordan researched and studied the history of American sans serifs, handwriting and its influence on the personality of our designs, and Scotch roman typefaces and their impact on American type design. Since joining Hoefler & Co. he has worked on many projects including Archer, Operator, and Inkwell. Famous for creating long-lived typefaces marked by high performance and high style, Hoefler & Co. creates the fonts that help shape the world’s foremost institutions, publications, causes, and brands. With a library of more than 1,000 typefaces designed for print, web, office and mobile environments, fonts by Hoefler & Co are everywhere: you’ll find them on Twitter and at Tiffany & Co., on HBO and Netflix, on every can of Coca-Cola, and on every iPhone ever made. Hoefler & Co. is the only type foundry ever to be honored by the National Design Awards at the White House and Hoefler & Co. typefaces are in the permanent collections of both the Smithsonian Institution and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Jordan provides a number of great resources during this episode, and has sent me some additional ones afterwards, these have all been included in this weeks show notes that can be found at Dialexa.com. Did you know there is an entirely natural way to 'get high on your own supply', without any side-effects? Imagine yourself losing all sense of your physical body, and being totally alone in a completely silent, pitch black, sealed room, floating in a zero gravity environment, while allowing your consciousness the freedom to roam the matrix of reality without the confines of your five senses. Sounds a bit like an LSD trip doesn't it? Well, believe it or not, this trip requires only water, salt, and darkness. I call it 'sober psychedelics.' Others call it a float tank, or sensory deprivation chamber. It's a practice and technology that's been around since the 1960's, and until recently existed on the fringe of underground counter-culture, known and used only by people interested in expanding their awareness and exploring the nature of human consciousness. Thanks to pioneers like our guest expert Crash Hoefler, floating has been having a huge resurgence in the past few years, and float centers have been popping up in cities all over the world. Seen now as the ultimate meditation and relaxation technique, people from all walks of life are exploring the inner workings of their minds and spirits using regular float sessions as a powerful personal development and biohacking tool. If you are interested in getting to know yourself on a deeper level than that which is possible through natural methods like meditation, or chemically assisted means, floating should be your next stop on the road to enlightenment. This episode is your ticket to ride. Share it with a friend. To your inner exploration, Luke PS. "If I can contribute to the design world, something that might exist long after I'm gone, that's a win for me...Sports Fonts was a part of that". This week I'm speaking with typeface and logo designer, Kristopher Bazen. Kris is currently a senior apparel designer at J. America. He also recently founded Sports Font Foundry, an online store and typeface foundry targeting the sports industry. From getting kicked out of high school to battling cancer, Kris has a very inspiring story of perseverance and overcoming obstacles in life to get where you want to be professionally and approaching your career from a different mindset. Before founding Sports Font Foundry, Kris spent time at Reebok, Adidas - Sports Licensed Division and Old Hat Creative honing his branding and illustration skills. In this interview, Kris shares advice for getting starting from scratch in the sports industry, diversifying your skillset, learning to sell good design to clients, the importance of sketching and more. Kris also touches on his sports logo design process and custome typeface design process. We also take a question from twitter as @ScottdeFasselle: "If you had to start from scratch—no one knew you & you hadn't worked in the industry, how would you get started?"
