Well, if we're doing “Oh No! A Giant Monster!” as a series, there is no way we can ignore the King of Monsters, Godzilla (or Gojira, if you're a purist). Godzilla: seventy years of squashing Tokyo under his belt and he shows no signs of slowing down. But which movie to choose? There are so … Continue reading "Episode 338 – Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)"
When Mike said he was choosing a movie about a troll for this week's episode of “Oh No! A Giant Monster!”, I naturally assumed he would make the obvious choice of an animated classic. No, not those silly “Trolls” movies with Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberland or whatever his name is; those are just colorful … Continue reading "Episode 337 – Troll (2022)"
This week's entry in our series “Oh No! A Giant Monster!” asks the question “Just what makes that little old ant/Think he'll move that rubber tree plant/Everyone knows an ant/Can't/Move a rubber tree plant.” BUT what if that selfsame ant is mutated by the magic that is 1950's radiation into a GIANT ant? You don't … Continue reading "Episode 336 – Them! (1954)"

Punch! Punch! NostalgiaCast '70s Palooza continues with a kaiju-and-fun-filled discussion of GODZILLA VS. MEGALON, the man-in-monster-suit melee that Leonard Maltin famously called "A hoho from Toho." Dan and Angela of the Dissect That Film podcast join Jonny and Darin to gasp and guffaw at all the insane/inane choices and unapologetically repurposed footage that make up this 13th(!) adventure in the Big-G's long-running franchise.
TAKE ONE LAST TRIP INTO THE UNKNOWN FOR THE ULTIMATE GIANT INSECT MOVIE, THE ULTIMATE GIANT MAN IN A DIAPER MOVIE, AND THE ULTIMATE KILLER, UM, ROCK MOVIE… Welcome to the final part of Gabe and Patrick's look back at the biggest year in giant monster movie history. Gordon's second giant bald guy movie of the year, The Amazing Colossal Man, John Sherwood's uniquely eerie The Monolith Monsters, and the only real kaiju movie released in 1957, Ishirō Honda's The Mysterians. Juran's 20 Million Miles to Earth, Roger Corman's Attack of the Crab Monsters, Jack Arnold's The Incredible Shrinking Man, and Kurt Neumann's Kronos, as well as part two, which covers Nathan H. FROM THE FROZEN WASTES OF THE ARCTIC TO THE DEPTHS OF THE AFRICAN JUNGLE, THE ARID DESERTS OF MEXICO, AND THE AMERICAN MIDWEST THEY CAME… Welcome to part two of Gabe and Patrick's look back at the biggest year in giant monster movie history. We've got a lot of big bugs this time, including Nathan H. Juran's The Deadly Mantis, the wasps of Kenneth G. Crane's The Monster from Green Hell, ocean mollusks of Arnold Laven's The Monster that Challenged the World, and locusts of Bert I. Gordon's The Beginning of the End. For good measure, we also talk about the really big bird from the antimatter universe seen in Fred F. Sears' The Giant Claw and the mutated monster man of Gordon's The Cyclops. Remember to also check out part one, which covers Nathan H. Juran's 20 Million Miles to Earth, Roger Corman's Attack of the Crab Monsters, Jack Arnold's The Incredible Shrinking Man, and Kurt Neumann's Kronos. FROM THE FURTHEST REACHES OF SPACE AND THE DEEPEST DEPTHS OF THE SEA CAME ALIENS, MUTATED CREATURES, AND OTHER LARGE, SCARY ALLEGORIES! Welcome to another patented Genre Grinder deep dive into a specific year where a specific genre peaked. This time, Patrick and Gabe are looking at 15 of 17 movies about gigantic monsters released in some capacity during the year 1957 (festival, roll-out, wide, et cetera). The other two are a lost film (Tokyo 1960) and one already covered on a different episode of Genre Grinder (Quatermass II). Not unexpectedly, the conversation carried on for some time, so the complete 15-movie discussion will be spread over three episodes. In part one, following an intro to the genre and era, we're covering Nathan H. Juran's 20 Million Miles to Earth, Roger Corman's Attack of the Crab Monsters, Jack Arnold's The Incredible Shrinking Man, and Kurt Neumann's Kronos. Here's the full Letterboxd list we are working from: https://letterboxd.com/gabepowers/list/1957-giant-monster-movies/ 00:00 – Intro: Why were there so many Giant Monster movies in 1957? 13:21 – 20 Million Miles to Earth and the cinema of Ray Harryhausen 42:47 – Attack of the Crab Monsters and the cinema of Roger Corman 1:02:46 – The Incredible Shrinking Man and post-WWII gender politics 1:26:40 – Kronos 1:48:27 – Outro If you are in a position to make the world a better place, please consider the following fundraisers: Trans Lifeline: https://translifeline.org/ Palestine Children's Relief Fund: https://pcrf1.app.neoncrm.com/forms/gaza-relief Anera Gaza Aid: https://www.anera.org/where-we-work/palestine/gaza/ Donations 4 Abortions (state by state abortion funds): https://donations4abortion.com/
Them! (1954), The Deadly Mantis (1957), and The Black Scorpion (1957) The decade of the 1950s gave horror fans a ton of different giant monster flicks, but usually taking something seemingly harmless, such as ants or grasshoppers, but somehow, someway, are mutated into growing into gigantic proportions! We had giant spiders, praying mantis, mollusks, and anything these creative filmmakers could come up, just make them bigger and let them loose! While modern critics, or even those at the time when these titles came out, passed them off as something for the kiddies and not to be taken seriously. And sure, they were definitely made under the term of exploitation, but when you really look at them, there is a lot of talented people behind and in front of the camera, and some really well-made and creative craftsmanship going on as well. Some aspects may seem and are very dated by today's standards, but there is still a lot there, as well as a lot of entertainment value. So grab your can of raid, a giant size flyswatter, and maybe even some industrial strength gloves to wear so you don't have to tough any of these nasty little buggers, and listen to us have a little fun discussing some big creepy crawlers! Movies mentioned in this episode: Aliens (1986), Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953), The Beginning of the End (1957), The Black Scorpion (1957), The Blob (1958), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), The Deadly Mantis (1957), The Gauntlet (1977), Godzilla (1954), House of Dracula (1945), King Kong (1933), The Lost World (1925), Mighty Joe Young (1949), The Monster that Challenged the World (1957), Son of Kong (1933), S.O.S. Iceberg (1933), Sudden Impact (1983), Tarantula (1955), Them! (1954), The Thing from Another World (1951)
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! It's a full house (“full mecha”?) in today's Godzilla Redux episode on the infamous but now-popular-to-like G-film, Godzilla vs. Hedorah (aka Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster). Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project), Ben Avery (Strangers and Aliens; Welcome to Level 7), and Matt and Gratton of Giant Monster BS all return to discuss the strangest yet arguably most auteur film in the franchise. To say it kicked off the ‘70s G-films with a strange bang would be an understatement. It's trippy imagery, bizarre monster, and psychedelic pop music all came from the mind of one Yoshimitsu Banno, who despite being rumored for years to have been told he ruined Godzilla, went on to help launch the MonsterVerse. Our panelists unpack that, the film's subtle-as-a-sledgehammer messages, its co-screenwriter Kaoru Mabuchi/Takeshi Kimura, and much, much more! Edited by Christopher Riner with Nathan Marchand. I'm Jim Jacob, a South Carolina based creator. I started as a podcaster by accident. Our first real episodes on the internet were me trying to find a solution to help tell my sons stories as I was traveling for work. I recorded some stories and hoped that by uploading them to a podcast app, my wife and kids could have easy access to listen. What started as a fix for our family's bedtime routine interruption has grown into a worldwide audience with hundreds of thousands of listeners. My wife Jocelyn and I have 3 kids and love inspiring others towards greater imagination and curiosity.
