TAKE ONE LAST TRIP INTO THE UNKNOWN FOR THE ULTIMATE GIANT INSECT MOVIE, THE ULTIMATE GIANT MAN IN A DIAPER MOVIE, AND THE ULTIMATE KILLER, UM, ROCK MOVIE… Welcome to the final part of Gabe and Patrick's look back at the biggest year in giant monster movie history. This episode features the most eclectic collection of movies, including a shoestring ‘lost world' epic in Virgil W. Vogel's The Land Unknown, Edward Ludwig's absolutely incredible Black Scorpion, Bert I. Gordon's second giant bald guy movie of the year, The Amazing Colossal Man, John Sherwood's uniquely eerie The Monolith Monsters, and the only real kaiju movie released in 1957, Ishirō Honda's The Mysterians.   Remember to also check out part one, which covers Nathan H. Juran's 20 Million Miles to Earth, Roger Corman's Attack of the Crab Monsters, Jack Arnold's The Incredible Shrinking Man, and Kurt Neumann's Kronos, as well as part two, which covers Nathan H. Juran's The Deadly Mantis, Kenneth G. Crane's The Monster from Green Hell, Fred F. Sears' The Giant Claw, Arnold Laven's The Monster that Challenged the World, and Gordon's The Beginning of the End and The Cyclops.   This episode is taken from two recording sessions, so forgive us for overlap and minor changes in audio quality.   00:00 – Intro 5:32 – The Land Unknown 25:24 – Black Scorpion 43:16 – The Amazing Colossal Man 56:55 – The Monolith Monsters 1:17:43 – The Mysterians 1:56:24 – Outro   If you are in a position to make the world a better place, please consider the following fundraisers: Trans Lifeline: https://translifeline.org/ Palestine Children's Relief Fund: https://pcrf1.app.neoncrm.com/forms/gaza-relief Anera Gaza Aid: https://www.anera.org/where-we-work/palestine/gaza/ Donations 4 Abortions (state by state abortion funds): https://donations4abortion.com/

FROM THE FROZEN WASTES OF THE ARCTIC TO THE DEPTHS OF THE AFRICAN JUNGLE, THE ARID DESERTS OF MEXICO, AND THE AMERICAN MIDWEST THEY CAME… Welcome to part two of Gabe and Patrick's look back at the biggest year in giant monster movie history. We've got a lot of big bugs this time, including Nathan H. Juran's The Deadly Mantis, the wasps of Kenneth G. Crane's The Monster from Green Hell, ocean mollusks of Arnold Laven's The Monster that Challenged the World, and locusts of Bert I. Gordon's The Beginning of the End. For good measure, we also talk about the really big bird from the antimatter universe seen in Fred F. Sears' The Giant Claw and the mutated monster man of Gordon's The Cyclops.   Remember to also check out part one, which covers Nathan H. Juran's 20 Million Miles to Earth, Roger Corman's Attack of the Crab Monsters, Jack Arnold's The Incredible Shrinking Man, and Kurt Neumann's Kronos. If you've not seen it yet, watch the subtitled Japanese language version and not the English dubbed version. Special topics for your consideration include: a real emotional roller coaster of a film, the problems with having two boyfriends, each of us choosing the saddest scene in the movie, and a heated debate about the creature design. We love creature films! Well, some of them we hated. Roger Corman, the “King of the Bs” who helped turn out such low-budget classics as “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Attack of the Crab Monsters” and gave many of Hollywood's most famous actors and directors early breaks, has died. He was 98. Corman died Thursday at his home in Santa Monica, California, according to a statement released Saturday by his wife and daughters. This follows a life that started with many B-horror movies, such as the 1960 film “Little Shop of Horrors,” and helping kickstart the careers of Martin Scorsese and Jack Nicholson. Some of Corman's work, including interviews with these film legends associated with Corman, was displayed in the 2011 documentary “Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel.”   For this week's FilmWeek feature, we talk to filmmaker Alex Stapleton, director of “Corman's World” and LAist film critic Wade Major, about Corman's legacy and why his loss meant so much to the film community.

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! Our first Patreon episode of season four—courtesy of executive producer Damon Noyes—is also MIFV's first double feature and includes our first Roger Corman movie! First, we tackle Corman's 1957 “classic,” Attack of the Crab Monsters, which could be called a “B-movie to a B-movie.” While it starts off as a typical atomic age creature feature, to Nate's surprise, it goes full-tilt crazy at the halfway point. Then he and Damon get to Island Claws, a 1980 “pseudo-remake” that is so obscure, the internet barely knows it exists. While it's technically better than “Corman's Crabs,” it isn't as memorable—until Nate and Damon rewrite it live! They top off their discussions with a quick overview of carcinisation...because the future is crabs. Read “Jimmy's Notes” on this episode. Relative to the barebones budget, the creature effects are surprisingly good. Some fun body horror adds to the thrills. Effective underwater cinematography. What elevates the film above any other run-of-the-mill giant radioactive kaiju flick is the twist that these crabs are telepathic; eating humans and absorbing their consciousness for communication. Yeah. You read that right. THE BAD Unclear at times just how many crabs there are and how many have been killed. Crab roars sound like some sort of wounded mammal - hardly crustacean like and quite jarring. THE DOWNRIGHT CAMPY The science mumbo jumbo in this flick is priceless: "That means that the crab can eat his victim's brain, absorbing his mind intact and working." "It's as good a theory as any other to explain what's happened... Once they were men; now they are land crabs." . . . Some antiquated moments but overall great. Stands the test of time thanks to Corman's self-awareness and ability to maximize campy and horror on a threadbare budget. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/camp-kaiju/support

Hey there! What do Australian stuntmen, New York cinephiles, and Old West Vampire Slugs have in common? If you answered "they're who hosts this podcast every week", well - that's not only incorrect, it's rude. But we WILL be talking about them this week in our reviews! Together with Zach! From the Shuffle.Repeat Podcast! Up first! It's 1978's Stunt Rock, the first and only movie whose entire scope of ambition was limited to combining a type of music with a type of previously-filmed footage! But given that the mostly pre-recorded footage stars Australian stuntmaster Grant Page, and the music is from none-other-than Rocktober Blood's very own backing band (Sorcery! the band with the magic tricks!), and the director is Brian "Leprechaun in Space" Trenchard-Smith, whether or not the normal rules of film criticism even apply is perhaps up for debate. Rock along with us as we discuss our favorite death-defying manuevers and whether or not this Sorcery band is any better than KISS. Next up! There's only ONE documentary we know of that chronicles in extensive detail the filmgoing habits of the people who annoy Mark Freado the most. And based on that alone, we knew we had to see it, no matter what kind of subway gymnastics might be required. We're gabbing of course about Cinemania, from 2002. It follows a group of obsessed movie goers as they obsessively go to the movies. But what do they think of Attack of the Crab Monsters? Finally! Of course, it's 2008's The Burrowers - a weird western with even weirder creatures. And we're not even talking Mapothers here. But it does have Mapothers (buyer beware). If you like toothy molemen, though, you'll be hyped. All this plus just walkin' the dog (wink wink), a drive-in theatrical attendance report (feat. kevin), the limitations of the boob scale, problematic pokemons, donut shop tourism, Bowman is gonzo for Belmondo, an earnest appreciation for stuntsmen, cine-musical fantasias, identifying with outcasts, a very special raver, theoretical vampire freadoing, the time we screwed over Shelby revisited, nerd news and even more! This time, we're taking a look at the giant monster throwback film Eight Legged Freaks and along the way we'll ask, why was there a time where David Arquette was a leading man in Hollywood, why don't more citizens have guns in rural Arizona, is this movie nightmare fuel or just plain parody and how can improvising lead to a pretty decent movie title? Let's dive in…. Cast & Crew Directed by Ellory Elkayem: The New Zealand born director was chosen by the producers to adapt a full-length version of a short film he had directed titled Larger than Life which centered around a giant man eating spider. He has since directed several direct-to-video films including a sequel to the comedy Without a Paddle. Starring David Arquette as Chris McCormick: Arquette had developed a reputation for playing goofy comedic characters following appearances on Friends as well as the character Dewey in the Scream Kari Wuhrer as Samantha Parker: Wuhrer's big break came on the MTV show Remote Control and had appeared in films like Thinner and Anaconda Scarlett Johansson as Ashley Parker: While she's now known as one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood, Johansson had humble beginnings but would later break through the following year with performances in Lost in Translation and The Girl with the Pearl Earring Also Starring: Scott Terra as Mike Parker Doug E. Doug as Harlan Griffith Rick Overton as Pete Willis Leon Rippy as Wade Jay Arlen Jones as Leon Eileen Ryan as Gladys Riley Smith as Randy Matt Czuchry as Bret A Brief History of Giant Monster Films Beginning with the Godzilla films, the popularity of giant monster (usually giant insect) films exploded in the United States. The Godzilla films were originally created as a warning for the unknown effects of radiation following the numerous atomic tests conducted in the Pacific during the late 1940's and 1950's. There were also concerns as the United States and the Soviet Union entered the Cold War and nuclear destruction was at the forefront of the world's population. This international strife made a rich ground for Hollywood to mine as films like The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Them, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Attack of the Crab Monsters and The Blob all become drive thru cinema fodder for the decade of the 1950's. These films are basic to say the least. Similar to how studio's would make westerns in the 30's and 40's, the plots of these films usually involved some sort of radiation or chemical leak that affects local wildlife and transforms it into a giant monster that wreaks havoc on a small town, kills some of the local populace until the military arrives to kill the creature or some smart scientist who happens to be nearby finds a way to destroy the creature or the film would substitute giant local wildlife for a giant alien and the rest of the plot would remain the same. Obviously, this formula became dated and soon after the 50's were over, these films quickly fell out of the style and television was quickly becoming the new desired media in Hollywood. The giant monster or kaiju genre has experienced a resurgence in recent years following films like Pacific Rim (which we have recently covered on Force Fed Sci-Fi) as well as Godzilla and its subsequent sequels such as Godzilla: King of the Monsters (which we covered in 2019) and Godzilla vs Kong (which will be covered in a future Bite Sized episode). It's unclear what the genre will be like in the future but it is exciting to see great films being released with such a reverence for the genre. David Arquette as a Leading Man? While hard to believe now, David Arquette was a prolific actor in the late 90's and early 2000's. Besides appearing in the films previo usly mentioned, he had also starred in Airheads, Never Been Kissed, 3000 Miles to Graceland and The Grey Zone but as Sean and Chris note during the episode, it's hard to buy into him as a leading man that's meant to...

The company was fined €25 million ($A41 million). Apple also “committed the crime of deceptive commercial practice by omission”. The consumer electronics giant is worth almost two trillion dollars, so the $41 million fine is unlikely to be felt too heavily. The fine is around 0.002 per cent of the company’s worth. As was the practice of MGM shorts at the time, only Rudolf Ising is credited. The short, Puss Gets the Boot, featured a cat named Jasper and an unnamed mouse, named Jinx in pre-production, and an African American housemaid named Mammy Two Shoes. Leonard Maltin described it as "very new and special [...] that was to change the course of MGM cartoon production" and established the successful Tom and Jerry formula of comical cat and mouse chases with slapstick gags. Matters changed, however, when Texas businesswoman Bessa Short sent a letter to MGM asking whether more cat and mouse shorts would be produced, which helped convince management to commission a series. A studio contest held to rename both characters was won by animator John Carr, who suggested Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse after the Christmas time drink. Carr was awarded a first-place prize of $50.10 February 1957 – Attack Of The Crab Monsters clawed its way to theatres. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_of_the_Crab_MonstersOn this day in 1957, Attack Of The Crab Monsters made audiences afraid to go back into the water. The feature starred Richard Garland and Pamela Duncan, and here's the plot summary: "Scientists become trapped on a shrinking island with intelligent, murderous giant crabs.” Attack of the Crab Monsters was Corman's most profitable production up to that time, which he attributed to the "wildness of the title," the construction of the storyline, the structuring of every scene for horror and suspense, and editing for pace. Corman has stated that the success of the film convinced him that horror and humor was an effective combination.10 February 1972 – Ziggy Stardust makes his earthly debut - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/ziggy-stardust-makes-his-earthly-debutThe concert at London’s Toby Jug pub a relatively minor rocker named David Bowie became the spaceman Ziggy Stardust. “I’m going to be huge,” is what David Bowie told Melody Maker less than three weeks earlier and still six months prior to the release of the albumThe Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. “And it’s quite frightening in a way, because I know that when I reach my peak and it’s time for me to be brought down it will be with a bump.” That last bit may have been a case of Bowie confusing his Ziggy persona with real life, but that was what put the act over in the first place. Any rock musician can put on a costume, but how many could have inhabited the identity of an androgynous Martian rock star come to Earth in its dying days so convincingly, so effortlessly.10 February 1996 – World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov loses game to computer. - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/kasparov-loses-chess-game-to-computerAfter three hours, world chess champion Garry Kasparov loses the first game of a six-game match against Deep Blue, an IBM computer capable of evaluating 200 million moves per second. Man was ultimately victorious over machine, however, as Kasparov bested Deep Blue in the match with three wins and two ties and took home the $400,000 prize. An estimated 6 million people worldwide followed the action on the Internet. The February 1996 contest was significant in that it represented the first time a human and a computer had duked it out in a regulation, six-game match, in which each player had two hours to make 40 moves, two hours to finish the next 20 moves and then another 60 minutes to wrap up the game.IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJFollow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094RSS - http://www.thatsnotcanonproductions.com/topshelfnerdspodcast?format=rssInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/General EnquiriesEmail - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comRate & Review us on Podchaser - https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/nerds-amalgamated-623195

Bob and Dan talk with screenwriter Nelson Greaves about Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957), a film about a team of scientists who attempt to rescue other scientists from a mysterious island inhabited by giant crabs. It gets weirder from there. Topics discussed: camp, the hive mind, the double feature, what belongs in the Bizarro Canon, and whether we should ever speak of this movie again. Commentary: Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957) We do something a little different in this episode for the 1957 film, Attack of the Crab Monsters. It's our first commentary! We learn that we should always be afraid and to never assume someone, or something, is pregnant. We also ask if a crab communicate through metal under water and are giant crabs the Martian Manhunter in disguise? The 2nd film in our Roger Corman season is ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS (1957). It's about a bunch of scientists trapped on an island that is rapidly shrinking. One by one they are killed off by an unseen force, lured to their deaths by the disembodied voices of their dead cohorts. The source of their conundrum? Giant, telepathic crabs hungry for human flesh.

It’s the 80s and we love shopping because it’s totally rad! The only thing better than going to the mall is working there! Like wow! In this episode Steve returns to help the guys review the robot morality tale, The Chopping Mall. Tough one to find for streaming & the rights have passed back and forth between distributors. You can buy the DVD on Amazon if you wish. For no reason whatsoever two characters from the film Eating Raoul are in the opening? One of our party girls/heroines is Kelli Maroney who is also in the 80s classic, Night of the Comet. Hey! It’s the smart kid from Head of the Class & two of the Karate Kid films. Meanwhile, Steve is lost in the lingerie department. We are fascinated by the amount of skin flicks director Jim Wynorski has made. We learn that character actor Gerrit Graham made $600 as a player in this film. Steve is enjoying the 80s hair. “8 pounds of Aqua Net.” Chris wishes that actress doing a striptease was humming “O Fortuna”. Dick Miller from Gremlins is our grumpy janitor. Certainly the key to stopping the killer robots is, “Klaatu barada nikto!” What the hell is with these lasers? How do they work? This mall has gasoline, propane, M16 rifles, auto parts and a paint store. The film within the film is Attack of the Crab Monsters and it may actually be better than this one. 1986 was a monster year for film. Short Circuit, the non-slasher robot film finished 21st above Pretty in Pink. Steve recommends Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Thank you and have a nice day. Support Film Frown on Patreon

Splitte mine bramseil!
