It's February, so that means it's time for the AIPT Movies podcast's “Shredruary” series! Where we cover movies that revolve around music or musicians! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss 2001's satirical musical comedy, Josie and the Pussycats!Endless product placement! A classic and catchy soundtrack that features Letters to Cleo's Kay Hanley and (we think) Matthew Sweet! A consistently funny movie that effortlessly bounces between witty, subversive moments and silly, slapstick comedy! Fun, creative direction from Can't Hardly Wait's Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont! A perfect cast that includes Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, Tara Reid, Parker Posey, Alan Cumming, Missi Pyle, possibly the greatest boy band of all time, Dujour, and the vocal talents of Mr. Moviefone! A misunderstood, ahead of its time gem - with a sweet message about being true to yourself and not getting caught in the cogs of consumerism - that has found the cult following it deserves despite its disappointing box office! In addition, Tim shares his spoiler-free thoughts on 1988's Alien Nation and the Oscar-winning cinematographer of Cool as Ice, while Alex talks about Shin Ultraman, Knight and Day, The Beekeeper, and Sniper G.R.I.T.!You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Seven years after Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi lit the world on fire with Shin Godzilla – which we very vocally went crazy for! – the duo's follow-up, Shin Ultraman, is finally available for home viewing in the United States! Sean's been gradually watching through the Ultraman TV shows over the past few years, while Jonathan has only seen a few stray episodes, but we're both in love with this passionate re-imagining of the tokusatsu classic. It's a striking piece of filmmaking with amazing special effects, creative and disorienting camera work, a great cast, and terrific music, giving us plenty to sink our teeth into. Jonathan also talks about his experiences seeing and reviewing both halves of the Barbenheimer phenomenon this weekend (Barbie and Oppenheimer, both reviewed at the new www.jonathanlack.com), and we discuss our continued adventures in Final Fantasy XVI. Enjoy, and come back next week for our review of the other Hideaki Anno tokusatsu film released in the US this week, Shin Kamen Rider! Time to get huge! The podcast goes tokusatsu as we check out Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno's back to basics reimagining of a beloved icon first debuting in 1966, and the next entry in Anno's ‘Shin Japan Heroes Universe', the kaiju slayer himself: SHIN ULTRAMAN. The Crew gets into what sets this apart from other ‘Shin' entries, the way Anno injects beauty into the absurd, how this is the best Miracleman adaptation we never got, and the sad fact that every culture can identify with incompetent governments being self serving!Activate your beta-capsule and check out our review here! linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema GO! GO! LET'S GO! This week, Trevor does a solo review of Hideaki Anno's, Shin Kamen Rider (2023)! The latest film in the “Shin” series of films, each a reimagined version of a long-running Japanese media franchise from director Hideaki Anno, Shin Kamen Rider (2023) is a remake of/tribute to Shotaro Ishinomori's original Kamen Rider TV series and manga from the 70's. Filled with the director's signature visual flair, science jargon, and heady, philosophical diatribe, Shin Kamen Rider is very much an Anno production, through and through. Episodically structured in a similar manner to Shin Ultraman (2022), and immensely crowd pleasing in fits and spurts, Shin Kamen Rider is somewhat of an uneven experience, with occasional moments of brilliance that are unfortunately spaced out across a great deal of material that lacks cohesion. An enjoyable watch, Shin Kamen Rider is a very good film among a “trilogy” of truly great films. Follow us on Instagram @catchinguponcinema Follow us on Twitter @CatchingCinema
Imported straight from Japanese cinema, Kaiju and Tokusatsu expert Diego returns along with self-professed cinephile Mike to discuss Hideaki Anno's latest film in his cinematic universe, Shin Ultraman. On this episode of The Cinedicate, we gather to unpack the Japanese figure of Ultraman and how he represents hope in their culture. Since this film is also the second installment of a series, following Shin Godzilla, we also compare and tone of hope to the previous film's darker tone. We also explain why this film is a direct reaction to the COVID pandemic of 2020.Shin Ultraman depicts Japan as the last line pf defense against an oncoming invasion of creatures from the depths of our planet, Kaiju. As the world turns it's back against the island nation, a silver clad entity arrives from space to help the Japanese and the world against these forces of nature.----------Support The Cinedicate on PatreonConnect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cinedicate/Twitter: https://twitter.com/cinedicate/Discord: https://www.cinedicate.com/discord Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. To celebrate the release of Shin Ultraman, the Godzillavangelists are talking about the shiny silver bug-eyed man himself! We cover not only the new movie, but two episodes from the original series including the acclaimed "My Home is Earth". Frequent guest Matthew Charles is back as we discuss pigeon lovers, favorite sayings, and the hidden human cost of the Space Race. Yes, that's just the tonal whiplash you get with Ultraman sometimes. In the next episode, our target is the beloved GMK! How will this oddball entry stand up to the test of time- and Sam's withering hipster gaze? The continued appearance of giant unidentified lifeforms known as "S-Class Species" has become commonplace in Japan. Conventional weapons have no effect on them. Having exhausted all other options, the Japanese Government issued the S-Class Species Suppression Protocol and formed an enforcement unit, known as the SSSP. The members chosen for the unit are: Leader Fumio Tamura (played by Hidetoshi Nishijima), Executive Strategist Shinji Kaminaga (played by Takumi Saitoh), Unparticle Physicist Taki Akihisa (played by Daiki Arioka), and Universal Biologist Yume Funaberi (Akari Hayami) As the threat of S-Class Species worsens, a silver giant appears from beyond Earth's atmosphere. Analyst Hiroko Asami (played by Masami Nagasawa) is newly appointed to the SSSP to deal with this giant and is partnered with Shinji Kaminaga. In Hiroko's report, she writes... "Ultraman (tentative name), identity unknown". Get 10% OFF your CAVITY COLORS order with promo code: MOVIEDUMPSTER at http://cavitycolors.com/moviedumpster! CJ and I first dive into one of his favorite characters, Spider-Man. With the release and mainstream popularity of Into The Spider-Verse, we do talk about which Spider-Man he is a fan of. Then, we boldly go.... to talk about Star Trek. CJ talks about how he first got into the Star Trek franchise. We talk about some of his favorite shows, favorite characters, and which shows he'd recommend for someone getting into the Star Trek for the first time. It wouldn't be our show without extremely convenient timing, and this week we were lucky enough to see the brand new limited theatrical release film Shin Ultraman! But we couldn't do it alone! Our old buddy Patrick (cohost with Myles on Kaiju Vs History) joins us to talk about Hideaki Anno's love letter to our giant gray rubber-suited hero! Hello, Kaiju Lovers! While production continues on the last quarter of MIFV season three, I'm sharing this excerpt from the latest MIFV MAX livestream, on which the subject was the finally-released Shin Ultraman. In this portion, we interview the producer of the Ultraman Connection website, Jeff Gomez, who shares why tokusatsu—and especially Ultraman—is important to him. We then move to the work he did to get Shin Ultraman released through Fathom Events, including who was commissioned to make its surprisingly good dub. You're getting inside info no other podcast has! If you'd like to hear the uncut version of the livestream where Danny, Damon, Michael, and Nathan discuss the film and their viewing experiences, join MIFV MAX on Patreon for as little as $3 a month! We'd like to give a shout-out to our MIFV MAX patrons Travis Alexander; Michael Hamilton; Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio); Bex from Redeemed Otaku; Damon Noyes, The Cel Cast, TofuFury, Eric Anderson of Nerd Chapel, Ted Williams, Wynja the Ninja, and Brad “Batman” Eddleman! Yes, this episode is about Shin Ultraman (dir. Shinji Higuchi), but (thanks to this week's guest Beth Westbo) the podcast also touches on, of all things, Doctor Who, American pop culture . . . and it wouldn't be an episode of Monster Kid Radio if Derek didn't mention Manos: The Hands of Fate (dir. Harold P. Warren) at least once. MKR listeners got into the act as well with their called-in thoughts on Shin Ultraman. Plus Listener Feedback, Kenny's Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland, and Mark Matzke's Beta Capsule Review.
