Show Notes Red Sonja Consumed by Gail Simone (Ken) - I got this as a Christmas present, and I'm looking forward to Gail's take on Red Sonja in novel form (I already read the comic book series she wrote; it was great). From the book blurb: The gutsy, wild, tortured free spirit, forged in pain yet unafraid of life or death, Red Sonja, the famous, fiery She-Devil and barbarian of Hyrkania has never concerned herself with the consequences of her actions. She's taken what she wanted, from treasure to drink to the companionship of bedfellows. She's fought who deserved it (and sometimes those who didn't). And she's never looked back. But when rumors start bubbling up from her homeland—rumors of unknown horrors emerging from the ground and pulling their unsuspecting victims to their deaths—and a strange voice begins whispering to her in her sleep, she realizes she may have to return to the country that abandoned her. And finally do the only thing that has ever scared her: confront her past. When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi (David) - I've been a fan of most of Scalzi's books. This is one of his more humorous books like Starter Villain and Kaiju Preservation Society. I'm looking forward to it. It's also going to hold me over until the next Old Man's War book comes out. The moon has turned into cheese. Now humanity has to deal with it. For some it's an opportunity. For others it's a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible. In this episode of Grumpy Old Geeks—Mad Hatter edition—we kick things off with a refresher on Staingate and the joys of delamination (spoiler: it's not a spa treatment). Then we dive into the U.S. government's latest tech innovation: buying up domains that sound like QAnon Mad Libs in support of Trump's meme coin. Meanwhile, DOGE decided to hand the steering wheel of housing regulations to a college kid and an AI. What could possibly go wrong? Not to be outdone, Elon shows up to a Trump meeting wearing two hats—one for each of his unchecked egos—and MoviePass launches a crypto-tied box office fantasy league, because we've clearly learned nothing. In the actual news, 4chan has risen from the dead like a less hygienic Lazarus, but it's still broken (shocker). Worldcoin's eyeball-scanning overlords are now teaming up with Tinder and Visa—romance and capitalism, together at last. Bitcoin mining is officially more pointless than Beanie Babies, and Microsoft says AI now writes 30% of its code—explains a lot, really. Meta somehow manages to forecast $1.4 trillion in AI revenue while also letting its bots get horny with minors. Meanwhile, Pinterest suddenly pretends to care about AI slop (while being the biggest copyright vampire online), and ChatGPT gets less clingy after OpenAI dials back its update that made it sound like your overly supportive aunt. Plus: more AI lies, shady benchmarks, pillow guy legal drama, and a reminder that North Korean remote workers also hate awkward small talk.We cool off with a Media Candy binge: Schmactors Season 2 is here, Andor returns, Conclave confuses us in the best way, and Ryan Coogler is giving X-Files a reboot we probably don't deserve. Jeremy Renner turns down Disney's lowball Hawkeye offer (respect), and musically we vibe with Maria Somerville and Anka Wolbert's latest releases. In Apps & Doodads, Apple and Epic are back in court, Apple Arcade keeps feeding us Mahjong, and Meta's Ray-Bans go full Stasi. Lyft wants your boomer parents off the road, and Google is sunsetting old Nest thermostats like it's Logan's Run for smart homes. Finally, we peek At the Library with Jason Pargin's black box paranoia, Scalzi's lunar love story, and a massive stack of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. Rounding out the show: a shout-out to The Alarm's Mike Peters, gone too soon at 66.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Head over to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use the code "GOG" for 20% off.Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today.

You're in the volcano lair of an evil supervillain, hellbent on taking over the world. In anger, he hurls one of his minions into the molten lava bubbling beneath them, as the unfortunate lacky swiftly sinks into the river of molten rock. If you've ever watched a James Bond-esque film, you'll be able to picture the scene. The problem is - the science doesn't stack up.John Scalzi is an American science fiction author, and in his new book ‘Starter Villain' he injects a dose of realism into many classic tropes about villains, humorously poking holes in some of the flaws of logic we see on TV - including their penchant for volcano lairs. They're still useful, just maybe not in the way you'd think. The novel follows the journey of Charlie, who is unwittingly thrust into the dangerous world of supervillains, forced to take up his late uncle's mantle. In this episode of CultureLab, Christie Taylor asks Scalzi what an evil mastermind would actually look like in the real world, why the genetically engineered dolphins in his book are such jerks and how he gets away with leaving some of the science unexplained. To read about subjects like this and much more, visit newscientist.com. Jake and Ron welcome back to the podcast Edward Ashton, author of the just-released Antimatter Blues, which is a sequel to Mickey 7 and published by St. Martin's Press. As most of you already know, Mickey 7 is being developed into a movie directed by Oscar-winning director of Parasite, Bong Joon-ho. He is also writing the screenplay. The title role is being portrayed by the highly versatile actor Robert Pattinson. The movie's release date is scheduled for March, 2024. The movie itself will be called Mickey 17. Mickey 7 was one of our favorite sci-fi books of last year. Last year, NPR called it one of the best books of 2022. Mickey 7 received high praise from two of our favorite authors. Jonathan Mayberry called it "Mind-bending and powerful. This is why we read science fiction." Jason Pargin called it "Unique and thought-provoking." We were so excited to chat with Edward again and to learn about the creative process for Antimatter Blues. Definitely a worthy sequel to Mickey 7! We reached him at his home, a cabin in upstate New York.Edward AshtonGet your copy of Antimatter Blues (audio, e-book and hardcover) at http://www.edwardashton.com/Twitter: @edwardashtonwritingThe Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sounds Music License Agreement

Happy New Year! Since Jake is currently on holiday the iOtians decided to replay one of their most downloaded episodes of 2022, their interview with Edward Ashton, Author of Mickey 7. This episode marked a turning point for the Wrath of the iOtians podcast. Due to an incredibly high number of downloads it increased the podcast's audience and visibility. It was also just a fun interview to do!Note: This episode has been remixed to increase clarity and vocal presence. The iOtians have a lot planned for Season 3 starting in January 2023! It kicks off with 2 Bram Stoker Award winning authors. Interview with Edward Ashton, author of Mickey 7 (April 2022) The sequel, Antimatter Blues, is now available! Details on http://www.edwardashton.com/Mickey 17, the film adaptation of Mickey 7 will be in theaters on March 29, 2024Directed by Bong Joon Ho, Screenplay by Bong Joon Ho and starring Robert Pattinson. Check out the official trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCvK270F_IE&ab_channel=WarnerBros.PicturesIf you follow movie news and development then you've already heard of the sci-fi novel Mickey7. In 2020, Plan B, Brad Pitt's production company, acquired the film rights to the tale. Earlier this year, it was announced that Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho selected Mickey7 to be his next project, with Robert Pattinson attached to star in the titular role. And this all happened before the novel was even published. Mickey7 Edward Ashton's first science-fiction novel, and it was published by St. Martin's Press in February 2022.Edward's background researching cancer and teaching grad-school quantum physics may lead would-be readers to suspect that Mickey7 is abstract and esoteric. Instead, the novel has fast-paced action with life-and-death consequences. Yes, you'll learn about science (often from Mickey7 himself), but it's always in the context of story. Ideas of immortality and identity are also explored in thought-provoking ways. We had the great fortune to talk with Edward Ashton about Mickey7 in detail. We reached him at his cabin in upstate New York, where he lives with his wife and daughters.Edward Ashtonhttp://www.edwardashton.com/Twitter: @edwardashtonwritingThe Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sounds Music License AgreementAuld Lang SyneElise SolbergLicensed under the Soundstripe Music License Agreement

We talk LD+R Season 3 this time, and as inevitable as Death and Taxes, there's another Scalzi one
One could call The Kaiju Preservation Society (Tor Books, 2022) a pandemic novel because a) John Scalzi wrote it during the pandemic and b) the pandemic serendipitously leads the main character, Jamie, to a new job that sets the action in motion. But the book is not about the pandemic. It's about Kaiju, Godzilla-like monsters who live in an alternate Earth. This alternate Earth is rich in radioactive elements, and the Kaiju produce energy from their own internal biological reactors. This makes them a danger when, say, they end their lives with in nuclear explosion that thins the walls between Earths, but it also makes them an object of fascination for unscrupulous humans seeking new sources of cheap energy. “So much of the way plant life and animal life on Earth works is through sunlight, which is just another type of radiation,” Scalzi says. “Plants photosynthesize, animals eat plants, other animals eat the animals that eat the plants and so on and so forth. But sooner or later it all comes back to sunlight. The only places where you don't have that happen are in very specific places where, for example, there are sulfurous heat sources at the bottom of the ocean. And then things have evolved to take advantage of the energy source there. Well, in this alternate Earth, things like uranium and thorium in the crust are another possible energy source. It makes sense to me that life would evolve to take advantage either wholly or in part of that additional energy source. And then, of course, I just built out from there.” Scalzi has contributed in myriad ways to the art of science fiction through many novels, his past leadership as president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and the platform he provides other writers on The Big Idea, a feature that appears regularly on his website. His writing has earned numerous awards, including what was once upon a time known as the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, the Hugo Award for Best Novel, Hugos for Fan Writer and Best Related Book, and the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. A must-listen episode! An interesting episode where the guest asks all the questions. Zac came prepared and asked some of the best questions everyone thinks about. Where do you invest in sales post-Series A to scale? What are the steps and in what order to best define product-market fit? How do we go from nice-to-have to must-have?
If you follow movie news and development then you've already heard of the sci-fi novel Mickey7. Author Edward Ashton, has numerous short stories published on his web site, http://www.edwardashton.com/. He's also published in analog SF and the Broken Worlds science-fiction anthology. His first two novels, Three Days in April and The End of the Ordinary, were published by HarperCollins. Mickey7 is his first science-fiction novel, and was published by St. Martin's Press in February 2022. Edward's background researching cancer and teaching grad-school quantum physics may lead would-be readers to suspect that Mickey7 is abstract and esoteric. We reached him at his cabin in upstate New York, where he lives with his wife and daughters.Edward Ashtonhttp://www.edwardashton.com/Twitter: @edwardashtonwritingThe Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sounds Music License AgreementThe Lowest DeepA supernatural horror fiction series.Listen on: Spotify
Great to have Dom back on the show for our year-in recap. Happy to see the time he's been putting in as a trader has been paying off. We all want freedom and in this world money helps that desire come true. Although we both agree that time should not be compromised in the name of wealth. Money comes and goes, time can be lost forever.
