PATREON MOVIE DISCUSSION: This movie was selected by our Patreon Supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon. Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard! Kathryn joins Melvin to discuss our Patreon Selected film, Pulse! This early 2000's Japanese horror film explores isolation, death, and human relationships amidst the infancy of an internet age, and the two dissect what makes the film so dense, so unsettling, and so predictive about internet technology.Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 27-minutes playing Sloppy Synopsis Movie Edition, a game where-in one person describes a film poorly and the other guess which movie it is! Play along with Kathryn and Melvin and see how many films you guess right! (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Pulse is eerie and spooky as opposed to shocking and violent.Pulse has been celebrated as being predictive in how it explores the internet and its effects on relationships and the individual, as well as a "safe" window into curiosities.Melvin thinks Pulse would work perfectly as a double-feature alongside The Last Broadcast, as both films are oddly predictive in how they understand media in an internet age a decade before the explosive growth of social media and smart phones.Kathryn and Melvin are very much a part of the generation that grew up with unfettered, unfiltered internet access. In this way, the two deeply resonated with a lot of what the film explores.Pulse is the kind of movie that proposes all kinds of different reads and understandings. You can interpret so much from this film.Discussing the apocalyptic ending.Melvin, "It's barely even "man" that has killed each other. It is, like, the technology that is put in their hands that is killing themselves."Recommendations:Destined for Glory: The Meaning of Suffering by Margaret Clarkson (1983) (Book)Pick a country that is not the U.S. (or English speaking) and watch their movies for a while.MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes! This is going to be a great episode - we can hear it in our ghost! On this episode, BK & Jack dive headlong into one of the most daring pieces of sci-fi & animation ever put onto the screen. Learn how the central conflict of the film stems from a philosophical tradition millennia in the making, how an unassuming manga artist took Japanese science fiction by storm, and how a reluctant yet offbeat director found the perfect means to bring hard sci-fi to the screen. The net is vast an infinite, and the Film Nerds are here to guide you through!
Part 1: Zach, Grace, and Michael talk about movies they saw this week, including: Hit Man, The Bikeriders, Leave Her to Heaven and Janet Planet.Part 2 (39:50): The group continues their Young Critics Watch Old Movies series with 1954's Sansho the Bailiff.See movies discussed in this episode here.Don't want to listen? A conversation about movies, and about our upcoming course: PARALLAX MOVIE CLUB ‘24: SUMMER OF IMAGINATION For more information or to sign up: https://www.parallax-media.com/courses/course-parallax-movie-club-24-summer-of-imagination-wf6cd About the course: Art and film expand our horizons, transport us out of our mundane, ordinary lives to places greater than heaven, more dreadful than hell, into a war-torn dystopia or a world full of romance, hope, and possibility. Join us on an eclectic journey exploring four powerful films and how their aesthetic, philosophical, and existential elements offer insights into the human condition, into ourselves. Each week we will explore and engage with a different film, unpacking the emotional and psychological factors, celebrating the technical craftsmanship and distinct storytelling, and answer questions about anything and everything related to the films. Andrew Sweeny will begin the Parallax Movie Club: Summer of Imagination with american classic Fight Club, appropriately about reclaiming their identities and transcending the boredom and predictability of corporate life, escaping into a full blown anarchist movement named Project Mayhem. Layman Pascal will host the second session with David Lynch's Fire Walk with Me. Fire Walk with me is as controversial as Layman, receiving boos at the Cannes Film Festival for it's shocking, controversial use of imagery and narrative. In Layman's words “‘Fire Walk with Me' has some of the most stark and disturbing commentary on abusive and violence in America, but also a truly spiritual emergence of transcendent goodness.” What's not to like! Robert Gray will reverse the darkness in the third session with Japanese Film-maker Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress, as two bumbling military deserters are tricked into helping a princess and her most heroic general escape death and bring the princess to safety. One of Kurosawa's most well received films, the Hidden Fortress is a great introduction to on of the best directors of all times and a dramatic tale of power, deception, folly, and triumph - oh, and it inspired George Lucas' star wars (and is much better imo), so if you like adventure and fantasy films, this will be a great time for you! John Vervaeke will take us into the heroic fantasy of The Fall (2006). Critically acclaimed and then virtually lost to the internet due to poor distribution and lack of streaming, The Fall imaginatively challenges the art of storytelling with exotic locations (shot in 24 countries over 4 years of filming), stunning arrays of characters (over 1000 actors participated in the filming), and dramatic narrative as life and fantasy blur for the characters - mystics, warriors, explosive experts, and even a monkey - who grapple with the ups and downs of their complex inner and outer lives. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podcast-c709ee4/message

Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 73-minutes discussing the 5 MonsterVerse films from Godzilla (2014)'s grounded nature, Kong: Skull Island still probably being the best film in the series, Godzilla: King of the Monsters contested quality, and a combined look on both Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Self-described "content machine" Nate Marchand shares about his several creative endeavors.Shin Godzilla is weird. Not necessarily as weird as Hideaki Anno's previous work, but definitely weird when compared to previous Godzilla material. At its face value, there's a lot to appreciate about the film. However, it's best understood in the light of modern Japanese history; most notably, the 3/11 disaster.Shin Godzilla is baked in Japanese culture almost to a fault, in that it makes a lot of the rich nuance of the film hard to engage as foreigners. Nate shares insight into some of these cultural hurdles.Getting into the atomic breath scene because it would be a mistake if they didn't.Shinji Higuchi was asked about the film's mysterious ending. Embark on an animated adventure with us, Dakota and Anthony, as we navigate the spellbinding narratives of Makoto Shinkai's "Suzume" and dive into its detailed animation artistry. We contrast this film against his prior hits "Your Name" and "Weathering With You," revealing how the supernatural elements intertwine with Japan's seismic history to create a story that resonates with both heart and heritage. Our anime aficionado hearts also beat faster for the latest buzz-worthy titles like "Solo Leveling," and we toss around theories on the upcoming "Kaiju No. 8" adaptation, while revisiting timeless classics such as "Neon Genesis Evangelion." Plus, we slide into a chat about the new "Marvel Rivals" game, speculating on its potential to capture our imaginations just as "Overwatch" once did.In our gaming time capsule, we're whisked back to the enchanting realms of World of Warcraft and its expansions that have shaped our virtual lives. We share our personal tales from Azeroth and beyond, from the epic adventures in The Burning Crusade to the game-changing moments of Cataclysm. As Anthony gears up for an exciting plunge into the Star Ocean series remasters*, our gaming enthusiasm doesn't end there—we're back at it with Destiny 2 and even delve into the surprise delight that X-Men '97 brings to the table, potentially upstaging its iconic predecessor.Lastly, the podcast wanders through the shadows of a world where being a 'closer' means confronting your family's legacy. Scenes in "Suzume" like the haunting abandoned amusement park come alive as we dissect the emotional threads that connect characters and underscore powerful messages about love and the triumph over darkness. This isn't just a recommendation—it's an invitation: join us in celebrating "Suzume," engage with us on social media, and become part of the conversation that makes geek culture so incredibly vibrant.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbAThe Complete MONSTERVERSE Timeline and History - GODZILLA x KONG Recap:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BamyXL7Z_n0Twitch (Anthony):https://www.twitch.tv/odysseywowMusic:Eric Godlow Beats: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRpkcYps82PdSo0tK5rEIPASupport the show
