ONSLAUGHT Ending Explained (SPOILER'D) — Adam Wingard's KPG Universe Grows*SPOILERS AHEAD (even in the description) Adam Wingard and his long-standing writing partner Simon Barrett's new film Onslaught is a return to their indie roots back in the day when they made VHS 2, You're Next, and The Guest. After making Death Note and two Godzilla movies, Wingard wanted final cut and expression of his singular, tonal chaos aesthetic. Cupcake (Jose) and WillDaBeast (Mike) deep dive the movie, its gorgeous cast - Adria Arjona, Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, and Drew Starky - and if this is WINGARD-worthy or just for the die-hards. The Boyz dig into Dan Stevens' "Peter Sellers"-esque performance, ALL the Carpenter nods (this is "The Guest" meets "Assault on Precinct 13" with a dash of "The Terminator"). The discussion of plot details and secrets reveal why this plays as a spiritual sequel to The Guest and You're Next, while actually being a direct entry in Wingard and Barrett's shared KPG universe (yes, the same KPG from The Guest, You're Next, VHS/2, and Blair Witch).GET KINKY AND KRAZY WITH WATCH SKIP PLUS!- - - - - - - - - -WE ARE WATCH SKIP PLUS!***Original Theme music: Linus Fitness-Center (click the link in our bio for more information on LFC)FOLLOW/LIKE/SUBSCRIBE/REVIEW/LOVEEmail us: WatchSkipPlus@gmail.comBe kind. Adam Wingard & Simon Barrett reunite for a Terminator-meets-Carpenter slasher. Spoiler-free verdict inside.Cupcake (Jose) and Mike (WillDaBeast) dive spoiler-free into Onslaught, the long-awaited reunion of director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett whose previous films - The Guest, You're Next, Netflix's Death Note, and Blair Witch - are both beloved and polarizing. Shot on a $20 million budget back in New Mexico (same stomping grounds as The Guest), Onslaught follows a trio of unstoppable, Terminator-style killers unleashed on a small town, with Adria Arjona, Dan Stevens, Reginald VelJohnson, and Rebecca Hall caught in the crossfire.A return to Wingard's indie roots after directing Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong, pic homages the heck out of the seminal films by John Carpenter (Halloween, The Fog, and especially Assault on Precinct 13) as well a healthy dose of James Cameron (circa Terminator and Terminator: Judgment Day; even Hicks....Michael Biehn...makes an appearance). But will Cupcake (who is dying to marry Adam Wingard) and diehard Wingard fans be satisfied by this "spiritual" sequel that lives in the universe of The Guest? Or is this "seen it/done that", mid-Wingard (if that is even such a thing)?Come back for our SPOILER'D episode where we dig into the ending, the kills, and the universal connection that links this film with nearly all other "Barrett-Wingard" movies. - - - - - - - - - -WE ARE WATCH SKIP PLUS!***Original Theme music: Linus Fitness-Center (click the link in our bio for more information on LFC)FOLLOW/LIKE/SUBSCRIBE/REVIEW/LOVEEmail us: WatchSkipPlus@gmail.comBe kind. Evan's and Dave's schedules diverged this week, so Dave tackled ONSLAUGHT (3:37), director Adam Wingard's latest. Dave was and is a big fan of Wingard's 2011 slasher YOU'RE NEXT, about a trio of home invaders running into someone in the home who was raised in a survivalist camp. But ONSLAUGHT ain't that; it's an action-thriller-horror hybrid about a fascist doctor making super soldiers, who - natch - get loose. This movie has killin' aplenty. But is it good killin'? Meanwhile, Evan took in MAYDAY (27:40), an action-comedy with Ryan Reynolds as an American pilot downed in Russia who meets Kenneth Branagh, a former KGB agent who wants to defect to the United States because he loves TOP GUN. Yeah, this movie takes place in 1987. Over on Patreon, we talk about the 1971 revenge flick GET CARTER, starring Michael Caine.
In the early 2010s, no one showed more promise as a filmmaker than writer-director Adam Wingard. The young genre filmmaker from Tennessee had made a name for himself after the success of his break out films You're Next (2011) and The Guest (2014, one of the best films of that year). But much like many modern directors, Wingard took his talents to the cinematic worlds of big budget, existing IP, which saw him make Blair Witch, the third film in the franchise, the live-action Death Note, based on the popular Japanese manga. In this decade, he's explored the thrills and spectacle of two Godzilla vs. Kong films, making his mark within two of the biggest characters in the history of cinema, showcasing ridiculous action mixed with even more outrageous world building. After nearly a decade of being inside the studio machine, Wingard, alongside his screenwriting partner Simon Barrett, have returned to form with his latest film, Onslaught, an action-packed, kinky, bloody, paranoid driven machine within the same universe as The Guest; a full display of the promise he once showed us, just more mature now, speaking on themes of how our government and institutions want to harm us more than hurt us, and see humans as collateral damage more than as assists. Starring Adria Arjona, Drew Starkey, Reginald VelJohnson, Rebecca Hall, and Dan Stevens, Onslaught is one of the best action movies of the year, proving that Wingard is still a highly original voice that is needed in creating perfect, throwback action-horror flicks we just don't get anymore, and also showcasing why Arjona is a badass movie star. In my conversation with Wingard, we spoke about his journey to make Onslaught, what he learned about himself when making studio films, and why this was the right time to head back into the previous cinematic universe he and Barrett worked in before. We also discussed his research into cults, super soldiers, lack of institutional trust, and how the power-hungry characters in the film explore and exploit their own kinks. In speaking with him about every aspect of the film, working with his cast, and looking at his place in the world of independent filmmaking, a joyous energy shined out of him, much like the night before when he introduced the film before a packed audience at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar in Austin, Texas. It's nice to tell that the writer-director is back making movies in his comfort zone, and we are lucky to see Adam Wingard back to working in a sandbox he created, all the while waiting to see how he's going to blow it up with some killer needle drops along the way. This podcast is built on a very simple conviction: to be faithful in the present, we must be rooted in the past. The old paths of Presbyterianism in the 18th and 19th centuries have much to teach us about the path we walk today. In weekly 30 minute episodes, we will reflect on the lives and works of figures such as Samuel Miller, James Henley Thornwell, and B.B. Warfield. We will consider enduring themes – prayer, Christian experience, and the church–matters of eternal significance for the people of God until Christ returns. Zac Wingard of Wingard Wearables joins Bob "The Knife Junkie" DeMarco on Episode 519 of The Knife Junkie Podcast (https://theknifejunkie.com/519).Wingard Wearables creates EDC items out of weapons not thought of for everyday carry, like tomahawks, spears, war clubs, and an implement called the "Quill." And Zac has always been passionate about historical-edged weapons, with a special love for tomahawks. One thing that many current-day tomahawk makers get wrong (and that Wingard focuses on getting right) is weight. Unlike axes and hatchets, tomahawks are meant to be very light and nimble in the hand, and easy to throw. Each Wingard Wearable is made in America by skilled blacksmiths and bladesmiths, and numerous small businesses across three states. Like the name implies, Wingard Wearable tomahawks, pikes, and quills are intended to be worn close to the body and come with kydex sheaths for the sharp and pointy parts. These tomahawks and other implements are not just weapons but also intended for utility use. The Thumper is a wearable bludgeon designed around the Iroquois war club. These are made by Zac entirely in-house. And the new Wingard Wearables Dickpik Magnum is a full-sized spike with all of the utility of the DP with added dagger-like reach and penetration. The newest Wingard Wearables tomahawk is called the Sparrowhawk, and unlike the others in the WW lineup, it is full-tang and ready for rough duty. And Wingard Wearables now offers a unique EDC fixed blade knife called the Love Handle, known for its tusk-like shape and under-the-belly carry profile.2024 also marked the first year Wingard Wearables presented their wares at Blade Show, with a killer booth setup in the Baller Room.Find Wingard Wearables online at https://www.wingardwearables.com, on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/wingard_wearables, and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/wingardwearables.Be sure to support The Knife Junkie and get in on the perks of being a patron, including early access to the podcast and exclusive bonus content.
