The guys are back and they're upset, specifically with Jerry London. For those that don't know that name, Jerry was the director of the original 1980 miniseries adaptation of James Clavell's book Shōgun. The director recently said that he thought the new version of Shōgun "is not entertaining for an American audience" and the awards it's won was beacause "there were no big shows against it." What an absolute tool, find out what the guys thought of his idiotic, narrow minded comments. Plus, the guys discuss James Gunn and Peter Safran's recent update on the status of most all the projects being developed for DC Studios. No literally, The Batman Part 2, Penguin Season 2, Blue Beetle (animated series), Supergirl, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Clayface, Sgt. This is a new adaptation of the classic 1986 comic book, so while the plot points of this film are openly discussed, it can hardly be called SPOILERS. Watchmen Chapter 1 is DC's newest full-length animated film, kicking off a two-part adaptation of the acclaimed 1986 Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons comic book. The movie was directed by Brandon Vietti, who joined this episode to discuss Watchmen Chapter 1. Vietti is a longtime DC animator known for his work on Young Justice, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Batman: Under the Red Hood. In this episode, Vietti discusses the process for adapting the storyline. He also discusses the other media adaptations, including a 2008 Motion Comic, the 2009 live-action Zack Snyder film, and the 2019 HBO Watchmen sequel/spin-off series. For Watchmen, Vietti had to walk a difficult line, staying faithful to the comic while making the story work in an animated format. Watchmen Chapter 1 is out on digital and will be released on Blu-Ray/DVD.

REBROADCAST MOVIE DISCUSSION:  In this rebroadcasted episode (originally released September 20th, 2022), you'll hear Melvin & Dan talk about one of Mel's favorite movies, The Blackcoat's Daughter, perhaps the most painstakingly slow burning, brooding mood slashers ever made. Also, Melvin gets really honest about why he loves The Blackcoat's Daughter so much. Topics: Melvin has wanted Daniel to watch The Blackcoat's Daughter since they started the podcast. Finally, it happened. The Blackcoat's Daughter shows various aspects of alienation, loneliness, and general social dysfunction despite its small cast. Despite The Blackcoat's Daughter being set at a spiritually indistinguishable denominational school, an aesthetic choice likely chosen to add flavor to the horror, Melvin finds himself deeply connecting with the general atmosphere present within the film. The structure of The Blackcoat's Daughter is extremely subtle, with even its timeline giving small yet pivotal narrative clues. Daniel read that Ozgood Perkins wanted the film to be about loneliness, which as stated before clearly comes through the film. The Blackcoat's Daughter lends itself well to rewatching, both in shedding light on the narrative, and introducing more curiosities. When either a secular or religious person has no support system, they are prone to fill the void of community, companionship, and intimacy with risky and dangerous solutions often because those are easier or simpler to implement than an entire social structure. Melvin feels The Blackcoat's Daughter displays a convincing, gentle, yet clear perspective as to why one may be attracted to evil, and he feels the film can help bring a sense of clarity and compassion toward an otherwise contentious subject matter. There's a really strong dream-like logic to The Blackcoat's Daughter in which things don't necessarily make real-world sense but heavily improve the film's overall tone.Daniel, "Helping somebody who's [overtly] choosing something other than God; that's a tough one. Because there's something about the thing they're choosing that calls to them uniquely."Melvin, "In terms of [The Blackcoat's Daughter], a resolution to loneliness is companionship. But learning... learning to be a good friend is hard."Recommendations: Global Impact Bible: ESVFind and visit your local pop-up Spirit Halloween!Young Justice (Show) & Batman: The Brave and the Bold (Show)MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes! Who are we? Who do we want to be? Sometimes, the truth is a lie well told. Tom King returns to the podcast for his most in-depth conversation, breaking down the themes of his iconic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow run and why so much of his personal history wound up within it. Explore no further if you have not already read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. We spoil everything. We've wanted to have this conversation with Tom King since we read the first issue, and it became utterly vital for our well-being after we read the last issue. We begin with the title and its significance at the start of the project versus its significance at the halfway point. From there, we consider Supergirl's quest alongside the vengeance-seeking Ruthye, how both characters are changed by the other, and just exactly what we're supposed to take away from that final page. A comic like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow doesn't come around too often. Every creator involved, from King to artist Bilquis Evely to colorist Matheus Lopes to letter Clayton Cowles, is operating at the height of their powers. It seems impossible to replicate, yet the entire team returns to comic shops this week with Helen of Wyndhorn. And yeah, we've read the first issue, and we're already in awe of what they're cooking inside this Wizard of Oz meets Conan the Barbarian tale. Special Bonus! Learn Tom King's Secret Comic Book Couples Counseling origin. We'll say no more here, but it's a fun tidbit for podcast trivia seekers. Finally, we begin our episode celebrating this year's Awesome Con experience and the first-ever CBCC panel held on March 8th at 8:30 PM in Room 206 of the Washington DC Convention Center. Our thanks to everyone who came out for our counseling session. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was originally published between August 2021 and April 2022. It's currently available in trade paperback from DC Comics, but a new Deluxe Hardcover edition will arrive on July 24th. Find it wherever rad books are sold. Continue this conversation with Tom King via Twitter, Threads, and Instagram. As always, Omnibus, the Digital Comic Store and Reader, sponsors our Referrals segment.
