In this trip to the familiar domain, we hardly see that space, and instead take in the weather changes, as we listen to the confidante say these words to the lady, when the man continues to remain parted away, having left in search of wealth: “Withering away words of those in this town, who speak, spreading resounding echoes of slander against you, your lover shall return! To see this come true, go on and press down upon those beautiful, etched, delicate, little feet of yours, which fear the ground, and gently bending your form, walk on with beauty, O maiden with brimming chastity! Akin to herds of elephants that live in bamboo-filled mountain ranges, packed with plenty of jackfruit trees, dimming the radiant orb in the sky, striking down on hoods of snakes, roaring with a thundering voice, shedding drops filled with hail, pouring a huge downpour, spread storm clouds, akin to your tresses!” Let’s listen to this loving conversation between friends and learn more! The confidante starts by acknowledging how slander is spreading in town owing to the gossiping mouths of the townsfolk. This indicates that the separation between the man and the lady has happened before their marriage. The confidante continues by saying that the man would soon be back, putting an end to all the talk of the townsfolk. Then, she points to how the thundering rain clouds are looming in the skies, and compares them to both herds of elephants in lush mountain ranges, as well as the lady’s tresses, in a double-edged simile. The confidante concludes by asking the lady to put those beautiful feet of hers to use and walk on outside to see this come true! To understand these words, we have to know about the man’s promise to return when the rains arrive. The confidante is pointing to the skies and saying to her friend, ‘The rains are approaching and so will he!’. The aspect of this verse I most related to was in how the confidante tells the lady to make those feet of hers touch the ground, and keep walking to see her joy approaching her. I imagine that the lady was languishing, refusing to even get up from her bed, and this is the confidante’s way of making the lady take a walk and take in the world outside. A subtle whisper of that timeless wisdom that there’s nothing like a walk to soothe a mind in the middle of whatever crisis it may find itself in!

Many of us who grew up with Lent hold dark memories of being forced to give up favorite things as penance for our sinfulness—even before we could really sin—with the implied punishment of self-deprivation as preparation for Easter, but more deeply as appeasing an angry God. Whatever the doctrinal intent, without further teaching, this is what we kids absorbed: a cementing of the reward/punishment paradigm that negates Jesus' concept of a love that self-exists as the oneness at the heart of everything. Lent, the forty days of fasting and prayer before Easter, was originally the rite of passage for those approaching baptism, the transition into new life requiring a complete change of values and perception. Meant to mirror Jesus' forty days of exhausting deprivation in the wilderness, the church and its people gradually lost the meaning behind Jesus' suffering, letting it fall into superstition as an end in itself, the penance needed to regain God's favor. What was Jesus really doing out there? He certainly suffered, but it was a means to an end, a self-imposed sensory deprivation to quiet the noise, remove all distraction to reveal what was true about himself, God, reality. His three symbolic temptations embrace the totality of human ego dissolution, effectively putting down the ego's need to be relevant, powerful, and spectacular in advance of its own agenda. What Jesus discovered in the fortyness of his wilderness was an agendaless love, indiscriminate and degreeless; that he was identified with that love; that he and that love, the Father, were one. This is what Lent is really about. Deprivation, yes. Discomfort, disturbance of familiar routines, sure. Suffering, maybe. But not as penance in search of reward…as the only means by which we can realize the Father's agendaless love already full-blown within ourselves. We don't ascend to this love, perform for it or suffer for it. As William Butler Yeats wrote, we wither into the truth. Lent is the ritual process of intentionally withering our noisy egoic minds to the point we can see what is really true. A process Jesus says is the only Way to the Father.

This episode, the second in our Eurasian Environments series, features a discussion with Sarah Cameron and Enda Wangui on water in two far flung regions—the Aral Sea and East Africa. How does the increasing scarcity of water impact these two arid climates? Cameron and Wangui address the environmental challenges in Central Asia and East Africa. They shed light on how colonial legacies disrupted traditional land access and ownership and climate change's profound social and ecological impact on water politics, tradition, gender relations and migration patterns.Guests:Sarah Cameron is an associate professor of history at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is the author of The Hungry Steppe: Famine, Violence, and the Making of Soviet Kazakhstan published by Cornell University Press. At present, she is at work on a new book, Aral: Life and Death of a Sea, about the causes and consequences of the demise of Central Asia's Aral Sea. Edna Wangui is currently the chair of the Geography Department at Ohio University. Her research examines the impacts of climate change, rural development, contemporary agriculture and rural land on gender roles and relations among pastoralists and other marginalized communities in East Africa.
