“Every day I want to praise or thank someone in the building for a task or a work well done. And thank God that God called them to this place and gave them the talent and ability that they exercise." — Gordon T. Smith Listen in on an exclusive peek into our fall book club interview as Women Scholars and Professionals book club host Jasmine Obeyesekere conducts an online discussion with author and professor Gordon T. Smith where they discuss vocation, spiritual engagement, and personal congruence. Do you want to find personal congruence with your institution? Would your approach to your work environment be different, if you thought of yourself as embodying God's welcome at your workplace? How does the reality that our thinking is secular unless we learn to think Christianly about all of life grip you? In this finale of our Fall Book Club, we engage in conversation with Gordon Smith about his book Your Calling Here and Now. You'll enjoy this rich conversation even if you weren't able to participate in the book club! Gordon Smith shows us how our vocation is a form of spiritual engagement and gives us direction to discern our callings in the immediacy of our lives. Welcome to the weekly church service for Redwood Park Church in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. We believe that God has a vision for our city: that the followers of Jesus would join God in his work to see all people reconciled to God, to themselves, to each other, and to the earth. We know that this begins with a relationship with Jesus, the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, and God's heart to see all people thriving and growing.

As Christians, we believe that every person in a relationship with God has a calling from God. We read this in passages such as Ephesians 2:8-10 where Paul tells us, “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God's gift — not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.” We live out these callings and good works that God has called us to in every day of our lives. Whether you are an employee, entrepreneur, homemaker, or missionary, you must discover how God has called you in your time and place. My guest on today's show wants to help us discover our calling and follow it faithfully. His name is Gordon T. Smith and we discussed his newest book Your Calling Here and Now. Gordon T. It is clear that we are living in and moving towards a post-Christian secular society, but is this actually a problem for the Church and society? Should we try to hold tightly to Christendom or might this secular age provide more opportunities than we think? We had a wonderful conversation with Gordon T. Smith on these questions and discussed his most recent book, "Wisdom From Babylon: Leadership for the Church in a Secular Age." Drawing Biblical Wisdom from the prophets, 1 Peter's audience, and others we find an appropriate Christian response to the secular age.

Most often, it’s not the challenges we face external that most hold us back from living out our call. It’s the battle that rages in that has the greatest capacity to derail and defeat us. Our fears, if left unchecked, hinder us from becoming all God created us to be and living the life He died to give us. We all have a God-honoring, life-changing call, one we are uniquely created to fulfill. God will give us all we need to do all He asks and assigns. The question is, will we humbly and courageously accept that assignment? Will we courageously surrender to His plans? What is a unique passion you hold that God might want to use to bring light and life to our world? 3. What are some fears that tend to hold you back from trying new things or stepping out in faith? 4. Is there an area that God might be calling you to surrender in order to make you freer to serve Him? 5. Consider your current fears. How many of them stem from focusing on your limitations rather than God’s power and provision? 6. Consider your fears in light of the parable Jennifer shared and the “lazy” servant’s perspective—Have you, perhaps unknowingly, assigned false character traits to God? Are you behaving as if He’s distant, uninvolved, or perhaps not powerful enough to save? 7. What is one “next right step” God is calling you to take?
Gordon T Smith's latest book is Wisdom from Babylon: Leadership for the Church in a Secular age, published last year by IVP academic. Gordon is president of Ambrose University and a prolific author. Smith helps us understand what a secular age looks like, and how a deeply hospitable church can respond and just be in a time that feels new and different, but not without its own beautiful possibilities.
What is the good work you are called to do? On Monday’s program Ken and Deb visit with Dr. Gorton T. Smith about the process of discovering what that “good work” is for the stage of life that we are in. Gordon will share some of the questions we should be asking and how the understanding of how God has wired us is a key to knowing where to plug into God’s Kingdom work in this world.
In John 17:3, Jesus said, “Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent." The original Greek word our Bibles translate as “know” in this verse extends beyond intellectual assent. It’s knowledge gained through personal experience - relationships. This means, the more we come to know God - who He is, what He’s done, and what He’s promised - the more we come alive. When engulfed in our all-powerful, all-knowing, fierce and compassionate love of God, our fears must flee. Resources: Courage and Calling by Gordon T. Consider what Jennifer said: Satan continually tries to hinder your effectiveness through defeat, discouragement, deception, and by destroying. Can you share a time when you’ve seen this to be true? 5. What are some things you know to be true about God? (Ex: He’s all-powerful, He’s been faithful to mankind throughout history, etc.) 6. How can meditating on one of the truths mentioned in response to question five help you move from fear to faith? 7. How might praying with thanksgiving help you move from fear to faith? 8. What is one thing you can do this week to grow in your knowledge of who God is, what He’s done, or what He’s promised? Episode Image Credit: Getty/nadia_bormotova
How do we understand a Christian conversion? Is it a static moment or is it a journey? Does our personal conversion experience match the experiences of our favourite Bible characters? #16 Gordon T. Smith: Institutional Intelligence by Wesley Seminary Podcast
Our special guest is Dr. Gordon T. Smith, President of Ambrose University and Seminary in Calgary, Alberta. Christian communities tend to identify with one of these labels over the other two. Evangelical churches emphasize the importance of Scripture and preaching. Sacramental churches emphasize the importance of the eucharistic table. And pentecostal churches emphasize the immediate presence and power of the Holy Spirit. But must we choose between them? Could the church be all three? Drawing on his reading of the New Testament, the witness of Christian history, and years of experience in Christian ministry and leadership, Gordon T. Smith argues that the church not only can be all three, but in fact must be all three in order to truly be the church. As the church navigates the unique global challenges of pluralism, secularism, and fundamentalism, the need for an integrated vision of the community as evangelical, sacramental, and pentecostal becomes ever more pressing. If Jesus and the apostles saw no tension between these characteristics, why should we? Gordon T. Smith (PhD, Loyola School of Theology, Ateneo de Manila University) is the president of Ambrose University and Seminary in Calgary, Alberta, where he also serves as professor of systematic and spiritual theology. He is an ordained minister with the Christian and Missionary Alliance and a teaching fellow at Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia.
