It's been nearly 45 years ago that I attended a jazz concert sponsored by a Sacramento area church. I was invited to it by my boss, Jim. I had been working for him for a year or two at the Magic Tunnel Car Wash. It was at that concert that Jim's life, shaped as it was by his love for Jesus, came to make sense to me. When someone asked me why I'd come forward at the end of the concert, my answer was simply, “I want what Jim has.”  It was that simple focus on Jesus in Jim's life and in that little community that drew me into a new way of living and, eventually, into the vocational focus of my life. And refocusing on Jesus along my journey has been what has renewed me, even revived me, when my life began to feel heavy, or wayward, or empty.  All of this is why I'm so happy to be talking with Todd Hunter, my bishop and my friend, about his new book What Jesus Intended: Finding True Faith in the Rubble of Bad Religion. Doesn't that title speak to where so many of us find ourselves these days?  The Rt. Rev. Dr. Todd Hunter is the founder of The Center for Formation, Justice and Peace. Todd Hunter is the founding Bishop of an Anglican diocese called Churches for the Sake of Others. His spirituality has been raised up through leadership in Alpha USA, so he has been formed by that deep heart for gospel-centered evangelism. His native language is Kingdom, justice, peace, Spirit-empowered leadership and missional ecclesiology. And his passions play out in places like The Center for Formation, Justice and Peace, which he founded … and in seminaries and universities all over the country where he participates in training up the next generation of spiritually formed, justice-seeking followers of Jesus. Bishop Hunter is a gift to the Church, and his latest book — What Jesus Intended: Finding True Faith in the Rubble of Bad Religion — is written to call that Church to become all it is meant to be.

In this episode, Todd Hunter talks about the aims of Jesus and how getting back to His purposes can help us through bad religion. We talk about living in the Kingdom of God, how we receive it and how we are sent to be His witnesses, and many other facets of the Kingdom. We talk about spiritual practices, so that we can do good works when moments present themselves. We talk about the gospel – what it is, what Jesus said it is and how we can live into it. Bishop Todd Hunter's life-long passion is to help others heed the call of Jesus to “come follow me” and thus to live their life in the kingdom of God as Jesus embodied, taught and demonstrated it. We are going to hear from 7 guests about their take on some aspect of the words of Our Lord's prayer: forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. The forgiveness of debts -- especially as it applies to the lives of Christian leaders -- how do we make forgiveness a habit? Call for forgiveness in communities after atrocity and hurt? Cultivate forgiveness from the heart? Know when we need to offer it, especially among the daily slings and arrows of church administration, expectations, and daily drama. We'll talk about the forgiveness of ancestral wrongs, and how forgiveness is possible in the midst of social injustice. And how about forgiving literal debt? Anyone up for that? How might Jesus' shepherding of us, his gentle call to forgiveness, pervade all these areas of our lives, and gain ground for grace, and for his glory? I had the joy of speaking to each of these guests: Dr. Nigel Biggar, theologian, ethicist, and author of Colonialism: A Moral Reckoning; regius professor of moral and pastoral theology at the University of Oxford; and director of the McDonald Centre for Theology, Ethics, and Public Life.  The Rev. Dr. Cheryl Bridges Johns, visiting professor at United Theological Seminary and director of their global Pentecostal House of Studies. The Rt. Rev. Dhiloraj Canagasabey, Bishop of Colombo in Sri Lanka and former Presiding Bishop of the Church of Ceylon. The Rev. Stephen Crawford, rector of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Franklin, Louisiana. The Rt. Rev. Todd Hunter, church planter and Bishop of the Diocese of Churches for the Sake of Others in the Anglican Church in North America. The Rev. David Sibley, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Walla Walla, Washington, and -- I'm sorry David I had to add -- four-time Jeopardy champion. And the Rev. Rachel Taber-Hamilton, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Everett, Washington, and Vice President of the House of Deputies of the Episcopal Church. Hold on tight to your purple stoles. Forgiveness can be a bumpy ride. But it's one the Lord promises to bless us and help us on. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/living-church/support

RANCHO VIEJO, TEXAS - Tony Bennett, president and CEO of the Texas Association of Manufacturers, recently spoke at a monthly meeting of the South Texas Manufacturers Association. The meeting was held at Rancho Viejo Conference Center.Bennett spoke about some of the key bills manufacturers are supporting this legislative session. The main topic discussed was Texas House Bill 5, otherwise known as The Texas Jobs and Security Act. It is authored by state Rep. Todd Hunter of Corpus Christi. A co-author is state Rep. Oscar Longoria of La Joya. Supporters of HB 5 say the legislation creates a new, modernized economic development program to ensure Texas continues to beat out its competitors and win jobs for Texas communities. “The supply chain wants to move back to the No. 1 economy in the world and that's still the USA,” Bennett said. “We have got to have a tool to help them get here because every community, every nation has a similar incentive program. An introductory offer, if you will to get these advanced manufacturing companies to locate in their community.”The attached audio includes an interview with Bennett at the STMA event. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

Slam the Gavel welcomes Deborah Hunter from Oklahoma to the podcast as she talks about her son's journey with Alicia and their baby Miles, who was born at 34 weeks. Their baby was absconded by CPS shortly after Alicia's passing from a brief illness.  Miles was then legally kidnapped, taken away from the Father, and put  into Foster Care. On several occasions when the Father has gone for 'visitation,' Miles has had a bruised lip, bronchitis, respiratory infections, swollen feet an extreme diaper rash and then had to have tubes put in his ears as well as on another visit Miles had a cut/wound in his skin after Father removed the diaper.     Shortly after, Judge Corley decided to take Miles off the donated breast milk Miles had been on since birth as a preemie and ordered baby formula, notarized a document, signing off on the Birth Certificate (which would make the judge the Grandfather). They took the Father's visits down to 1.5 hours every other week. How can a Father bond with their own flesh and blood for such short periods of time? Deborah has been documenting everything and they have a court date January 5th, 2023. Update will be following. To reach Deborah: queenskolar1234@gmail.com and her cell: 347-522-6610. HIghlights - Ears (Part 6, Episode 43) Persuasion Starts HerePeople don't care what we know until they know that we care.”To listen well is the first step in caring. Persuasion begins with listening well.Four scenarios:1. When someone is angry2. When you are trying to make a saleI discovered early on that people don't buy from me because they understand what I'm selling. They buy because they feel understood.' Jon benefits from his natural tendency to ask a lot of questions and to listen closely to the answers. (Susan Cain, Quiet)3. When someone has an opposing point of viewWhen we try to convince people to think again, our first instinct is usually to start talking. Yet the most effective way to help others open their minds is often to listen. (Adam Grant, Think Again)4. When you would like to share about your religious faithWe could do a far better job of patiently listening. And we should not talk until we canrepresent the skeptic's viewpoint with empathy so that a skeptic friend says, ‘Yes, that is my hang up; I couldn't have put it better myself.' Only then should we try to...recommend the Christian faith to them. (Tim Keller, “Why We Argue Best with our Mouths Shut,” Christianity Today. May 26, 2017)Evangelism is joining the Holy Spirit in a conversation he's already having with someone. (Kevin Palau)Tension drops when people feel heard. Ask questions and care about the answers. (Kevin Palau)I'm willing to bet the farm that in our postmodern society the most important evangelistic skill is listening. (Todd Hunter, the former CEO of Alpha USA)If you want to talk to somebody honestly, as a human being, ask him about his kids, find out what his dreams are – just to find out, for no other reason. Because as soon as you lay your hands on a conversation to steer it, it's not a conversation anymore; it's a pitch. And you're not a human being; you're a marketing rep. End Quote Listening well prepares the ground for persuasion. But persuasion should not be our primary reason for listening well. We listen well because we genuinely care about the other person. We listen well because people are important whether or not they buy from us, agree with our politics or theology or continue to be mad at us. People are important for their own sake, not as a means to an end. The primary reason for listening well is because we genuinely care about others.

In today's episode, Alan speaks with his friend and bishop, Todd Hunter. His most recent book is titled Deep Peace: Finding Calm in a World of Conflict and Anxiety. It's a pretty timely topic, wouldn't you say? Statistics over these last couple of years tell us that anxiety is at perhaps an all-time high. And you don't have to go much further than your social media or news feed to see the levels of conflict in our time.  One of the simple statements Todd has shared more than once goes, in part, like this: “If it can be done in anxiety, it can be done better in peace.” Alan shares that this has been a bit of ongoing spiritual direction that he's returned to countless times. He's come to find that peace is a far better foundation for good living, good relationships and good work that anxiety or anger have ever been.  IG @bishoptoddhunter Connect with Alan at www.unhurriedliving.com
