This show is a special tribute edition to Carole Baggerly. Carole passed October 2024 With, GrassrootsHealth, Carole Baggerly has had the pleasure of helping support a core of 48 initial leading researchers in vitamin D and now, other nutrient researchers. The key implementation innovation in this project is the use of the ‘Field Trial', a formalized methodology, approved by an IRB, used by participating individuals. Currently there are approximately 15,000 participants from all over the world who are helping sponsor the project by testing their vitamin D levels twice a year and answering a health questionnaire to document the outcomes of having vitamin D serum levels in the 40-60 ng/ml (100-150 nmol/L) range. The group has initiated the ‘Nutrient Research Institute' to enable testing and analysis of many nutrients together—to see how they work with each other, which they do. A key focus now is the ability of getting a serum level of children to 40 ng/ml (100 nmol/L) can help prevent major infectious lung diseases and, can help minimize later life diseases as well. A research/field trial publication from GrassrootsHealth showed an 80% reduction in the incidence of breast cancer with a pooled cohort of over 5000 women, from 2 randomized controlled trials and the GrassrootsHealth Field Trial. The group is now working as well on a Type 1 Diabetes Prevention project with the Children with Diabetes Foundation. GrassrootsHealth research with the Medical University of South Carolina showed a 40-60% reduction in the incidence of preterm births by getting the pregnant woman's serum level to at least 40 ng/ml (100 nmol/L). Carole Baggerly is the Founding Direct of GrassrootsHealth a 501c3 non-profit public health promotion organization, with the direction of ‘Moving Research into Practice'. For the last 5 years, when Carole and her husband became 75 and 90 years old, they realized that while all the nutrients are still necessary...the body still needs some help and, possibly the living arrangements do too. Carole and her husband, Leo, have been spending time both investigating and using items like grabbars in the home, have seen what it takes to get them, how helpful they are to even younger people in helping avoid falls; how an item like a scooter is not well known but is a mobility agent in long distances, how long-term-care insurance can be a major driver in choices. In short, the 'Aging in Place' takes preparation and very few people are ready to do it. At this point, Tools of Living has been established to provide the information, to do ongoing development of the links to reliable sources of material/consulting on the choices. Carole Baggery is the Chief Innovation Officer for Tools of Living : Empower You to Live Life to the Fullest
Carole Baggerly is Founding Director of GrassrootsHealth, a 501c3 non-profit public health promotion organization, with the direction of ‘Moving Research into Practice'. She is the leader of the D*action project, an international project co-designed by Dr. Cedric F. Garland of UCSD's School of Medicine and member of Moores Cancer Center. This organization's mission is to move research into practice-NOW—to help move the population into an orientation of health and prevention vs fixing an illness. GrassrootsHealth has introduced new methodologies of Field Trials, with testing and education to get valid ‘real-world' information about how nutrients actually perform, and, how to move beyond the limitations of randomized controlled trials. The organization is guided by a panel of 48 of the world's leading researchers in vitamin D and now, other nutrient researchers. The key implementation innovation in this project is the use of the ‘Field Trial', a formalized methodology, approved by an institution review board, used by participating individuals. The group has initiated the ‘Nutrient Research Institute' to enable testing and analysis of many nutrients together—to see how they work with each other, which they do. HOUR 1 Top Two Supplements for Bone Health- Magnesium and Vitamin D – Carolyn Dean MD ND Magnesium can do so much that it makes people skeptical that one simple mineral can be crucial for so many activities in the body. Magnesium is necessary for 1,000 enzyme systems in the body that control many thousands of chemical interactions. Magnesium is crucial for bone health but it has a much broader scope than even I imagined when I first began researching it in the late 90s. Most people think that calcium is the most important factor in bone health. Vitamin D is also a necessary component. However, it's not well known that magnesium is required to convert vitamin D into its active form so that it can turn on calcium absorption. I became aware of the pivotal association between vitamin D and magnesium after receiving emails from people experiencing magnesium deficiency symptoms after they began taking high doses of Vitamin D. Some doctors are still prescribing 50,000IU of Vitamin D a week when, in reality, vitamin D is similar to sunshine in the sense that it should be supplemented daily. It turns out that all the enzymes metabolizing vitamin D require magnesium as a necessary co-factor. When you take high doses of Vitamin D and if you are already low in magnesium, the increased amount of metabolic work drains magnesium from its muscle storage sites. That's probably why muscles are the first to suffer magnesium deficiency symptoms. Twitching, leg cramps, restless legs and Charlie horses. Angina and even heart attacks affecting the heart muscle are also magnesium deficiency symptoms. One woman reported that her vitamin D levels remained chronically low (below 30) despite months of high dose supplementation with vitamin D. It wasn't until she added magnesium that things changed quite dramatically. With magnesium supplementation, her last Vitamin D level was 67, which for her was a miracle. This increase surprised her endocrinologist as well. She also noticed a big difference in how she felt. She no longer had chronic “unexplained” muscle tenderness and could exercise longer on her treadmill and felt great. I think we should consider that part of the current vitamin D deficiency epidemic is an underlying magnesium deficiency. This in important information during cold and flu season. By adding magnesium to your daily vitamin D intake you can increase your vitamin D level and protect your bones and cells – the places where your immunity is made! My thoughts were echoed in a 2013 study called “Magnesium, Vitamin D Status and Mortality” with this conclusion: “Our preliminary findings indicate it is possible that magnesium intake alone or its interaction with vitamin D intake may contribute to vitamin D status. The associations between serum 25(OH)D and risk of mortality may be modified by the intake level of magnesium.” (NEW 2 BMC Medicine 2013, 11:187) Several other factors including the intake of certain nutrients that influence how an individual's vitamin D level responds to their vitamin D supplementation. Recently, GrassRootsHealth published compelling information about the response of vitamin D dosing in relationship to the following nutrients: Vitamin K2: that's why our D3K2 ReSet contains K2 – D3K2 is made from plant lichen instead of sheep lanolin, which is the fat from sheep's wool. Vitamin B6, B12: which are in our ReAline formula along with all the methylated and food-based Bs. Vitamin C: which is our Whole C ReSet, and Vitamin C ReSet Berry Powder Probiotics: that's our Flora ReVive And other key vitamin D nutrients including boron and zinc are in our ReMyte and Pico Zinc. HOUR 2 Vitamin D - Your Daily Intake and Co Factors- Carolyn Dean MD ND Vitamin D is a necessary nutrient for the body. It's used in most body processes, such as cellular functioning, bone remodeling, calcium absorption, and immune support. Research indicates it can improve longevity, boost immunity and may even brighten your mood. While the majority of studies focus on Vitamin D3 benefits, it's important to note that much of the population is still deficient in Vitamin D3. The risks for being deficient in vitamin D include: 1). Fear of cancer and compulsive use of sunscreens 2). Avoiding the great outdoors 3). An abysmally low RDA for Vitamin D – 400IU when we probably need 10,000IU 4). Living at higher latitudes – less sun strength and exposure 5). Darker skin, because it requires longer sun exposure. 6) Cold skin, which is less receptive to the sun than warm skin. 7). Being overweight – more than 30% fat makes it harder to absorb Vitamin D. 8). Unhealthy Gut, Liver, Kidneys –reduce the amount of Vitamin D that is absorbed. 9). Medications, which can zap vitamin D production The Body Needs All Forms Vitamin D from the Sun as well as supplemental doses of vitamin D3 through a highly effective vitamin D3 supplement are essential to achieving the recommended levels of vitamin D needed in the body for daily optimal health. Without enough vitamin D available the immune response of the body can be hindered. Don't forget Co-Factors "While many people are beginning to realize the amazing health benefits that vitamin D has to offer in the prevention of disease, they may not be getting the full benefits from vitamin D without also supplementing their diets with magnesium, which is a vital nutrient that works synergistically with vitamin D," says Dr. Dean. Magnesium is absolutely necessary for the activation of vitamin D. Magnesium deficiency is the reason why the studies on Vitamin D are inconclusive with researchers put down vitamin D supplementation and others support And, magnesium deficiency is why extremely high dose Vitamin D supplementation (50,000IU – usually of synthetic D2) can be detrimental because it steals all the body's magnesium giving you magnesium deficiency symptoms. HOUR 2 Testing For and Fixing Magnesium Deficiency- Carolyn Dean MD ND Magnesium plays many important roles in the structure and the function of the human body. The adult human body contains about 25 grams of magnesium. Over 60% of all the magnesium in the body is found in the skeleton, about 27% is found in muscle, 6% to 7% is found in other cells, and less than 1% is found outside of cells. WOW – why does the body require so much darned magnesium? Well, it turns out that magnesium is not only producing necessary enzymes and working in the mitochondria to make ATP but magnesium is also necessary for protein synthesis at the ribosomal level. The ribosomes are the cellular organelles where proteins are synthesized. Magnesium “activates” the amino acids involved and allows the mRNA to attach to the ribosomes. Magnesium is also found in the nucleus of the cell and is essential for the stability of the nucleic acids RNA and DNA. If DNA and RNA structure do not remain stable you may have mutations in the codes and produce incorrect peptides are none at all during protein synthesis. Energy for the production of proteins must come from ATP as well. Without magnesium available in many areas of the cell, protein synthesis cannot occur. Okay- so magnesium is super critical! BUT – how do you know if you have enough magnesium in your body to perform all the essential functions for human health? One way to be certain your levels of magnesium are well within the normal range is to get a magnesium RBC red blood cell (RBC) essential mineral test. Another option is to enroll in our GrassrootsHealth nutritional supplement research project and you'll get your magnesium testing as well as vitamin D, Essential Fatty Acids and TSH/Thyroid levels all through one at-home bloodspot testing kit. Another way to determine if you have enough magnesium in your system is to pay attention to your body's performance and symptoms as Dr. Carolyn Dean recommends. By learning how to ‘read the signs' you can ensure magnesium balance and good health. Clinical symptoms of magnesium deficiency are physical signs that are clearly related to both its physiological role and its significant impact on the healthy balance of minerals such as calcium and potassium. Tics, muscle spasms and cramps, seizures, anxiety, and irregular heart rhythms are among the classic signs and symptoms of low magnesium. Latent symptoms are symptoms are present but concealed by an inability to distinguish their signs from other disease states. Caused by low magnesium intake prevalent in nearly all industrialized nations, they can include migraine headaches, insomnia, depression, and chronic fatigue, among others. You can also determine if you are at risk for magnesium deficiency through your lifestyle. For example, did you know that most dark colored sodas contain phosphates? These substances actually bind with magnesium inside the digestive tract, rendering it unavailable to the body. So even if you are eating a balanced diet, by drinking soda with your meals you are flushing magnesium out of your system. Fluorides in toothpaste and drugs can also bind magnesium and render it unavailable as well depleting your storage sites and creating deficiency symptoms. Foods, caffeine, sugar, stress, and prescription meds are all within our power to control and manage so that magnesium storage sites do not become depleted. Finally, aging is another factor in magnesium depletion. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to low magnesium status. It has been shown that aging, stress and disease all contribute to increasing magnesium needs, yet most older adults actually take in less magnesium from food sources than when they were younger. In addition, magnesium metabolism may be less efficient as we grow older, as changes the GI tract and kidneys contribute to older adults absorbing less and retaining less magnesium. If you are above 55 and also showing lifestyle signs or symptoms related to low magnesium, it's particularly important that you work to improve your magnesium intake. HOUR 1 Beautiful Bounty of the Sea--Omega 3 - Carolyn Dean MD ND This week Ginney has been working with me in my hometown, Maui, Hawaii USA. Spending so much time near the ocean has inspired us to spend our weekly radio show talking about the benefits of including lots of seafood in our diets and supplementing with Omega 3 when our EFA scores dip below ideal. In 2020 we all realized the essential requirements of the body for defensive nutrients, especially magnesium, zinc, vitamin D, and the essential fatty acids. As a result we offered listeners a chance to get on board with our GrassrootsHealth (GRH) In Home Blood Spot Test. What we discovered is that most of our customers, including myself, were low in omega-3s and Vitamin D! We've spoken a lot about Vitamin D in previous blogs but what about Omega-3 fatty acids. Studies show that low levels correlate with certain health problems and higher levels correlate with good health. GRH has the following to say about omega-3s: Over 23,000 published research papers support positive health benefits of high omega-3s, with more than 6000 supporting cardiovascular benefits, over 1000 showing respiratory benefits, and more than 2000 showing a benefit to diabetes conditions. Hundreds of studies suggest that omega-3s may provide benefit for a wide range of diseases, including asthma, depression, ADHD, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. Higher omega-3s have been associated with improved cognitive function, lower risk of dementia, longer life, and a reduced relative risk for death from any cause. They are beneficial for normal vision, anti-aging, skin health, maternal health, immune system, brain health, heart health, normal liver function, joints and muscles. So with all these benefits you would not expect that 82% of GrassrootsHealth participants have an Omega-3 Index level below the recommended 8%. Index levels over 8% are associated with heart health, longevity, brain health, reduced risk of breast cancer, lowered inflammatory markets, as well as improved immune response to viral infection. We were similarly shocked to find that every one of our customers, including me, that did the In Home Blood Spot Test were low in vitamin D as well as omega-3s. We're just not getting enough in our diet; and the supplement I had been recommending was not translating into increased blood levels which I promptly corrected by creating my own! One of the tremendous benefits of saturation with the essential fatty acids is lowering inflammation. They are both important fatty acid components of cell membranes that contribute to the structure, fluidity, flexibility, enzymatic activity and signaling between cells. Hand in hand with reduced inflammation is an improved immune response. They increase the activation of macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells (the first-responders that help identify pathogen or virus in the case of an infection), T-cells (that destroy the pathogen or virus) and B-cells (to remember the pathogen or virus and act immediately to destroy it in the case of a future infection), among others. They are responsible for: Increasing the activity of immune cells needed to identify and destroy viruses, therefore decreasing the likelihood of viral binding and invasion Promoting T regulatory cell development and a controlled inflammatory processes. Inhibiting inflammation, decreasing the production of inflammatory chemicals, and preventing a cytokine storm. I've had a sketchy association with omega-3s, mostly because they make me burp, so I try them, burp a lot and stop taking them. We are also told that fish oil formulas won't be properly absorbed unless taken with a fatty meal. I'm also not keen on depleting the ocean of krill (commonly used in fish oil formulas). Krill is the major food source for our awesome humpback whales that visit Maui every winter. Therefore, when I decided to create an omega-3 formula, I had fish burping and fatty meals in mind. I took care of that problem by making an algae-based formula that doesn't require a fatty meal and doesn't make you burp! I also took care of the fact that I didn't have Vitamins A or E in any of our formulas so I snuck those into the Omega-3 Algae capsule as well. Join Ginney and me tonight as we broadcast from the beautiful beaches on Maui and celebrate the incredible bounty of our oceans, our fish, and algae – a key component in my Omega 3 solution. HOUR 2 How Magnesium Vitamin D and Calcium Play Together-Carolyn Dean MD ND When considering this equation, it must be understood that all these nutrients work synergistically and require co-factors to be successful in performing their functions in the body. In addition to magnesium, calcium, and vitamin D, Dr. Carolyn Dean, one of the world's leading experts on vitamin and mineral supplementation, also recommends vitamin K-2 for the metabolism of calcium, ReAline for the absorbable form of vitamin B-6 that works with magnesium, and ReMyte Mineral Solution for the multi-minerals that are require to support vitamin D metabolism as well as inviting potassium and selenium to the party! Let’s see if we can get this all sorted out. Getting the ratios right might look something like this: Start with Diet: Whole, complete foods including healthy proteins, lots of fruits, and properly-prepared vegetables. Avoid processed foods, sugars, and other unsavory food products that diminish health and vitality. Focus on proper Hydration - many of our radio show listeners know that Dr. Dean recommends drinking 1/2 your body weight (in lbs) in ounces of water daily with at least 1/4 tsp of trace mineral sea salt in each liter. ReMag is necessary for 80% of known metabolic function, so it’s a must-have mineral that works synergistically with all the vitamins and minerals in the body. However, even with a good diet you’ll get less magnesium from your food than you would have 100 years ago because of the demineralization of the soil. This is why it’s so important to get your ReMag daily. Either follow the protocol by sipping through the day or take it in juice, green tea, or a smoothie with your meals 2 or 3 times a day. Be sure to drink your sea-salted water throughout the day as well. Calcium is essential for the strength and development of bones and teeth. Few people know that calcium is regulated and controlled by magnesium. Calcium is important for the transmission of impulses in nerve and muscle cells, including cardiac muscle cells. Even so, calcium can’t deliver without the balancing effect of magnesium. Magnesium opens the cells to receive a measured amount of calcium, then, after the muscle or nerve action has been performed, magnesium drives the calcium out of the cell. Calcium also has an important role in blood clotting. But that might mean that the calcification people are experiencing by taking calcium supplements is a cause of the thick blood that so many people have these days, leading to the over-prescription of blood thinning drugs. Our body holds on to calcium much more than magnesium. That may be because human beings grew up near the ocean where seawater contains three times more magnesium than calcium, which meant they had much more magnesium in their diet. Thus, we evolved mechanisms that grabbed and stored calcium but released excess magnesium (the laxative effect). Without understanding those processes, it has been suggested that we require more calcium than we do. Dr. Dean recommends a 1:1 balance of calcium to magnesium and takes the calcium RDA from the UK (700mg) and the WHO (500-600mg). Try to get 600mg of calcium in through your diet, which includes yogurt, green leafy vegetables, and bone broth. And, for those who are dairy-free you can get 300 mgs of calcium per serving with ReCalcia, Dr. Dean's picometer calcium solution. Vitamin D is made by the body through summer sun exposure. There’s an app for your iPhone called D minder that estimates how much vitamin D you make from the sun depending on where you are, skin type, time of year, time of day, etc. However, you require magnesium to convert sunshine vitamin D into active vitamin D. Another resource to know your vitamin D level is to participate in the GrassrootsHealth vitamin D research project, which you can join from our website RnA ReSet and click on Research. To get the most benefit from vitamin D you have to have the other co-factors in your body as well – those include magnesium, Vitamin K, Zinc, Boron and Vitamin A. Vitamin K2 is needed to get calcium directed to where it needs to be, in bones and teeth, not arteries, and it protects against vitamin D toxicity. Like magnesium, nearly everyone is deficient, because our eggs and butter and other natural sources are either missing from the diet or come from industrially raised animals not fed on grass. Vitamin K2 supplementation may dramatically reduce fracture rates and even reverses arterial calcification. Vitamin B-6 - AKA pyridoxal-5-phosphate works as a coenzyme to assist in an amazing variety of tasks – the creation of heme, the iron-containing component of red blood cells; making the hormone serotonin (the “feel good” hormone); processing carbohydrates for energy; keeping the nervous system working smoothly, and supporting hundreds of other biological functions. Having low levels of this key nutrient can lead to skin disorders, depression, dizziness, headaches, and other, more serious problems, such as heart attacks and strokes. Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate, or P5P as it is commonly known, is the active form of vitamin B6 found in Dr. Dean’s formula, ReAline. In foods or most supplements, vitamin B6 is found in one of three forms: pyridoxine hydrochloride, pyridoxal, or pyridoxamine. Inside the body, these forms of B6 have to be converted by the liver to the active form the body needs – P5P. Low rates of conversion from the inactive to the active form of vitamin B6 have been reported, especially in people with impaired liver function, Celiac disease, older adults, and in children with autism. By consuming vitamin B6 in the active P5P form, conversion is no longer necessary, and the full benefits are available immediately. Working hand-in-hand with the 100% bio-available ReMag, Vitamin B-6 will boost the performance of your energy production and nervous system to your benefit. Essential Fatty Acids - EFAs increase calcium absorption from the gut, in part by enhancing the effects of vitamin D. They also regulate and reduce urinary excretion of calcium, possibly by reducing production of pro-inflammatory molecules called prostaglandins. EFAs have also been found to increase calcium deposition in bone, which is not surprising since bone calcification must take place in the presence of a type of fat known as a phospholipid. Finally, essential fatty acids appear to support collagen production by modulating the inflammatory response that interferes with collagen synthesis. Our soon-to-be released Omega-3 Algae A+E provides you with the necessary EFAs for optimal health. So join us tonight for the rest of Dr. Dean’s powerful, preventive protocols and information! You will love hearing the beneficial interactions with our callers and hosts alike and answers to some of today’s most important health prevention topics including the body/mind connection, identifying the 'conflict' in the 'conflict basis' of disease and much more!! PART 1Tips to Improve Your Vitamin D Response- Carolyn Dean MD ND Magnesium deficiency is an important factor in the results obtained from vitamin D. According to Dr. Carolyn Dean, MD, ND, magnesium expert and author of The Magnesium Miracle, the effectiveness and benefits of vitamin D are greatly undermined in the absence of adequate levels of magnesium in the body."While many people are beginning to realize the amazing health benefits that vitamin D has to offer in the prevention of disease, they may not be getting the full benefits from vitamin D without also supplementing their diets with magnesium, which is a vital nutrient that works synergistically with vitamin D," says Dr. Dean. In addition to magnesium deficiency, there are several other factors including the intake of certain nutrients that influence how an individual’s vitamin D level responds to their vitamin D supplementation. Recently, GrassRootsHealth published compelling information about the response of vitamin D dosing in relationship to: · Vitamin K2 · Vitamin B6, B12 · Vitamin C · Probiotics And other key vitamin D nutrients including boron and zinc. Source: GrassRootsHealth If you are having difficulty increasing your vitamin D levels, or are just beginning the journey to a robust vitamin D supplementation routine, you’ll want to tune in for tonight’s radio show to learn more about how to maximize your dietary intake of all these nutrients through diet, supplementation and other lifestyle factors. PART 2Tips to Improve Your Vitamin D Response- Carolyn Dean MD ND Magnesium deficiency is an important factor in the results obtained from vitamin D. Learn what the experts suggest for dosage and Vitamin D levels to help you fare better with Covid-19. Also, the Vitamin D link to breast cancer. GrassRootsHealth.net Study on Breast Cancer:https://www.grassrootshealth.net/blog/breast-cancer-risk-80-lower-higher-vitamin-d-60-ng-ml-part-3/
HOUR 1Vitamin D - Powering Your Immune System -- Carolyn Dean MD ND While the world waits for a definitive treatment, cure, or vaccine for COVID-19, studies have shown a significant correlation between a low level of vitamin D in the blood and a greater risk of infection. Vitamin D deficiency has now been shown to increase susceptibility to COVID-19 and increathe risk of COVID-19 severity, including ICU admission and death. Conversely, other published studies have also shownthose with higher vitamin D levels (over 30 ng/ml or 75 nmol/L) have a reduced risk of severe symptoms and death due to COVID-19. In fact, an analysis of over 190,000 Americans found that having vitamin D levels of at least 50 ng/ml resulted in a 53% lower positivity rate than those whose levels were less than 20 ng/ml! The first-published randomized controlled trial on vitamin D and COVID-19 found that adding vitamin D to the standard treatment nearly eliminated ICU admissions and did eliminate deaths. These scientific facts, based on research supported by GrassrootsHealth and other clinical research groups, should have your full and complete attention. HOWEVER, increasing vitamin D supplementation is not, in and of itself, a solution. Magnesium and Vitamin D Metabolism "While many people are beginning to realize the amazing health benefits that vitamin D has to offer in the prevention of disease, they may not be getting the full benefits from vitamin D without also supplementing their diets with magnesium, which is a vital nutrient that works synergistically with vitamin D," says Dr. Carolyn Dean, author of The Magnesium Miracle. Over the past decade, Dr. Carolyn Dean has been educating the public on the role of magnesium in vitamin D metabolism. Too much vitamin D can deplete magnesium and cause magnesium deficiency symptoms. The amount of magnesium required to process high blood levels of Vitamin D might contribute to more migraines, heart palpitations, AFib, and insomnia when they take vitamin D. Magnesium is so important in vitamin D metabolism that optimum levels of storage vitamin D and magnesium are much more effective in producing active vitamin D than high dose vitamin D. The paper “Magnesium, Vitamin D Status and Mortality” in BMC Medicine displays a detailed flow chart of vitamin D metabolism, which shows that magnesium is required in 8 crucial steps. In addition, a recent paper released in 2018 demonstrates found that magnesium intake significantly interacted with vitamin D in relation to vitamin D status and risk of mortality. Finally, Dr. Taylor Wallace recently published a very important paper outlining magnesium's role in immune resilience providing a summary of experimental findings and knowledge of the biochemical role magnesium may play in the pathogenesis of COVID-19 is presented in this perspective. Tonight, we'll talk with Dr. Carolyn Dean about Vitamin D - Powering Your Immune System- along with a wide range of other health topics and clinically recommended nutritional assets to support your body. You will love hearing the beneficial interactions with our callers and hosts alike including the body/mind connection, identifying the 'conflict' in the 'conflict basis' of disease and much more!! To help increase awareness of the importance of vitamin D supplementation about minority populations, The https://organicandnatural.org/ (Organic and Natural Health Association) launched the “https://powerofd.org/ (Get On My Level)” campaign in partnership with Dr. Ken Redcross, author of “Bond: The 4 Cornerstones of a Lasting and Caring Relationship with Your Doctor.” The campaign highlights the proven health benefits of vitamin D and encourages people in communities most at risk to know their vitamin D level by either asking their doctor or measuring and monitoring their own levels at home using a test kit and vitamin D calculator from Organic & Natural Health research partner, https://www.grassrootshealth.net/ (GrassrootsHealth). In this podcast, Dr. Redcross speaks with Sandy Almendarez, content director, Informa Markets, about the important of vitamin D for minority populations. They cover: The need for the medical community to foster and support the patient-doctor relationship. How Black and Latinx communities generally view supplements as part of their healthy lifestyles. How supplement brands can promote their vitamin D supplement to ethnic minority populations.
HOUR 2Vitamins and Minerals -Collaborators in Success-Carolyn Dean MD ND Using nutrition and supplements to boost your health and immune system are an essential part of daily life now in the year 2020. In years past we were told we could all get by with grabbing a few extra veggies at the salad bar or tossing down a green smoothie. But, in today’s environment, where there is so much soil depletion and chemical toxicity in our foods, it’s actually BETTER to rely on pure, highly absorbed certified nutritional formulas. Putting together your daily formulations can be a lot of fun. With a tweak here and a pinch there you figure out your body’s natural response to vitamins and minerals through how much better you feel and how your body performs. And that’s the key – supplements should truly make you feel better - A key pillar of knowledge is how all these nutrients work synergistically because they are crucial co-factors necessary for all the biochemical processes in the body. In addition to magnesium, and vitamin D, Dr. Carolyn Dean, one of the world’s leading experts on vitamin and mineral supplementation, also recommends vitamin K-2 for the metabolism of calcium; zinc for the immune system; and vitamin C for it’s incredible infection fighting properties. Let’s not forget the multi-minerals in ReMyte that are required to support vitamin D metabolism as well as inviting potassium and selenium to the party! On tonight’s live radio show we’ll take a deep dive into this topic and we’ll take your questions and phone calls on the very important topic of Dietary Supplementation – Getting Your Ratio’s Right. Here are some key points to consider:Do you research – Dr. Dean has a free library of books and videos you can rely on for clear, concise information. Commit to good habits - Avoid processed foods, sugars, and other unsavory food products that diminish health and vitality. Focus on proper hydration – many of our listeners know that Dr. Dean recommends drinking 1/2 your body weight (in lbs) in ounces of water daily with the addition of 1/4 tsp of natural sea salt. ReMag – even with a good diet you get less magnesium from your food than you would have thirty years ago because of the demineralization of the soil. This is why is it’s so important to take your ReMag daily. Either follow the protocol by sipping through the day or take it in juice, green tea, or a smoothie with your meals 2 or 3 times a day. Vitamin D is actually a hormone and is made by the body through summer sun exposure. Through our partnership with GrassrootsHealth you can do In Home Testing of your magnesium and vitamin D levels. To get the most benefit from vitamin D you have to have the other co-factors in your body as well – those include magnesium, calcium, and vitamin K. Vitamin K2 is needed to direct calcium where it needs to be, into your bones and teeth, not your arteries, and it protects against vitamin D toxicity. Like magnesium, nearly everyone is deficient in K2 because natural sources like free-range eggs and butter are either missing from the diet or come from industrially raised animals not fed on grass. Vitamin K2 supplementation may dramatically reduce fracture rates and even reverses arterial calcification. Zinc is a mineral you’re going to be hearing about for quite some time to come. Zinc is known for its immune system boosting qualities and antiviral properties and as we incorporate even higher doses of zinc into our daily routine it’s showing itself to have even more diverse properties than we expected. We’ll be talking about those qualities on the show this evening. Vitamin C - Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient, widely recognized for its antioxidant properties. These properties arise from its potent redox potential due to its capacity to donate electrons to oxidized molecules. Even in small quantities vitamin C can protect critical molecules in the body such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) from damage by reactive oxygen species, which are generated during normal metabolism, by active immune cells, and through exposure to toxins and pollutants (e.g., certain chemotherapy drugs and cigarette smoke). The vitamin also plays a critical role as a cofactor – a molecule that assists enzymes in chemical reactions. This dual nature of vitamin C means that it is instrumental in multiple physiological processes, including those involved in the biosynthesis of collagen, carnitine, and catecholamines. As such, vitamin C participates in immune function, wound healing, fatty acid metabolism, neurotransmitter production, and blood vessel formation, as well as other key processes and pathways. And guess what! Sugar competes with Vitamin C in the cells – so the more sugar you eat, the more you deplete your Vitamin C! So, join us tonight for the rest of the story including the full scope of Dr. Dean’s recommendations. You will love hearing the beneficial interactions with our callers and hosts alike including the body/mind connection, identifying the ‘conflict’ in the ‘conflict basis’ of disease and much more!!
