Skin issues like acne, eczema, and rosacea are deeply connected to internal imbalances, especially those originating in the gut. It is important to explore diet—particularly sugar, refined carbs, and dairy—because it can drive inflammation, insulin resistance, and hormonal disruption, all of which contribute to poor skin health. Topical treatments and antibiotics may provide short-term relief, but they often disrupt the skin and gut microbiome, worsening conditions over time. A Functional Medicine approach focuses on restoring gut balance, identifying food sensitivities, and supporting detoxification pathways with nutrient-dense foods, supplements, and lifestyle practices. Addressing the root causes not only improves skin but also promotes systemic healing and resilience. In this episode, I speak with three of our doctors at The UltraWellness Center—Dr. Elizabeth Boham, Dr. Cindy Geyer, and Dr. Todd LePine—about why, when it comes to skin care, we need to look inside the body first. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Albany Medical School, and she is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and the Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Boham lectures on a variety of topics, including Women's Health and Breast Cancer Prevention, insulin resistance, heart health, weight control and allergies. She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine. Dr. Cindy Geyer received her bachelor of science and her doctor of medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine and lifestyle medicine. Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine's focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Her journey into breast cancer care began with a personal tragedy. At the age of 16, Dr. Jenn's cousin, acclaimed singer-songwriter Linda Creed, died of metastatic breast cancer just weeks after Whitney Houston's recording of her iconic song, "The Greatest Love of All," topped the charts. This loss became a defining moment, inspiring Dr. Jenn to dedicate her life to transforming how we approach breast cancer treatment and prevention.Dr. Jenn became Philadelphia's first fellowship-trained breast surgeon and spent 17 years leading the field. However, her perspective changed significantly when she became a patient herself. Through this personal experience, Dr. Jenn saw how broken the conventional medical system can be. This led her to discover and embrace functional medicine, a revelation that sparked her journey towards a more holistic approach to breast cancer care. This personal journey led her to create Real Health MD in 2019, a practice dedicated to holistic healing for breast cancer. It integrates conventional wisdom with root cause medicine and the drivers of health: nutrition, lifestyle changes, detoxification, and stress management. Dr. Jenn's innovative approach doesn't stop there. As the founder of PerfeQTion Imaging, she is establishing safe imaging centers across the nation, armed with revolutionary technology that promises to redefine breast cancer screening. This technology is not only fast and safe but also comfortable, affordable, radiation-free, and boasts 40 times the resolution of MRI. It has received FDA clearance, signaling a new era in breast health and breast cancer screening. In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Jenn hosts the "Keeping Abreast" podcast, where she shares her expertise and encourages women to take control of their breast health. Her book, "The Smart Woman's Guide to Breast Cancer," challenges conventional wisdom and promotes a holistic approach. It emphasizes the importance of nutrition, lifestyle choices, and addressing environmental toxins, providing practical steps for women seeking to navigate breast cancer treatment and regain control of their health.Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Jenn is a devoted wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, and athlete. Her life's mission is deeply personal, rooted in her cousin's memory, and driven by a desire to make a lasting impact on all those who desire breast health. What if your fatigue, weight gain, hormone imbalances, and brain fog all traced back to a silent disease that affects 1 in 3 people—and you didn't even know you had it? In today's episode, I'm joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Dr. Yousef Elyaman to talk about a condition that's quietly becoming one of the biggest threats to our health: fatty liver disease—now renamed Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD). It's not just a liver issue. It's deeply connected to heart disease, cancer, infertility, type 2 diabetes, dementia, and even hormone dysfunction. The most alarming part is it's often missed in traditional medicine because there's no easy drug to prescribe. We break down: The real root causes—from sugar and starch overload to gut imbalances, toxins, alcohol, and chronic inflammation The surprising early warning signs your body might be giving you Why standard labs often miss it, and the tests you actually need The step-by-step functional medicine approach to reverse fatty liver naturally—using targeted nutrition, lifestyle upgrades, and proven supplements I also share the latest science on inflammation, why it's the common thread between fatty liver and nearly every chronic disease, and how to calm it down at the root. This is the episode I wish every patient (and doctor) could hear—because fatty liver is reversible when you catch it early, and the ripple effects of healing it are massive. If you care about your energy, hormones, brain health, or longevity… this one's for you. “You can give someone a survivorship care plan, but just giving them doesn't mean that it's going to happen. Maybe there's no information about family history. Or maybe there's information and there's quite a bit of family history, but there's nothing that says, ‘Oh, they were ever had genetic testing,' or ‘Oh, they were ever referred.' After about five years, a lot of times people are ready to say, ‘Okay, annually is okay.' And eventually they may let that drop off. But it also depends on did they have a mastectomy? Did they have breast conserving surgery? And then if they had reconstruction with an implant, how often do they see the plastic surgeon? Because they need to check integrity of the implant. So those schedules are really individualized.” TS 13:24  “When you think about long-term effects, I think you need to kind of think about that survivors can have both acute and long-term chronic effects. And a lot of that depends on the specifics of the treatment they had. I think as oncology nurses, we're used to, ‘We give you this chemotherapy or this agent, and these are the side effects.'” TS 15:36  “The diet issues are huge. And I think we are slow to refer to the dietician, you know, you can get them a couple of consults and because you're saying to them, ‘This is really important. We need you to lose weight or we need you to eat more of this.' Ideally, fruits and vegetables are going to be about half of your plate. And what's the difference between a whole grain and not, less processed foods, making sure that they're getting enough protein. And then once again, really kind of making sure that they're not taking a lot of supplements and extra stuff because we don't really understand all that fully and it could be harmful.” TS 34:53  “Breast cancer is a long, long journey, and I think you should never underestimate the real difference that nurses can make. I think they can ask those tough questions. And I think ask the questions that are important to patients that patients may be reluctant to ask. I think giving patients permission to talk about those less-talked-about symptoms and acknowledge that those symptoms are real and that there are some strategies to mitigate those symptoms.” TS 42:28

Many people believe that breast cancer is primarily caused by genetics, but did you know that only 5-10% of cases are linked to inherited mutations like BRCA1, BRCA2, and CHEK2? The truth is, your overall health and risk of recurrence are influenced by key biological processes such as detoxification, methylation, and inflammation—and these are things you can actively support with your nutrition and lifestyle choices. In this episode of Better Than Before Breast Cancer, I break down how these processes impact your health, how to recognize the signs of imbalance in your body, and why a low-carbohydrate diet can be a powerful tool in regulating glucose, insulin, and inflammation. I also explain why nutrition isn't about restriction—it's about giving your body the support it needs to function at its best. You'll learn:✔️ Why genetics are only part of the breast cancer risk equation✔️ How detoxification, methylation, and inflammation work together to protect your body✔️ Common signs that these processes may not be working efficiently✔️ How blood sugar regulation impacts detox, inflammation, and cancer risk✔️ How a low-carb, nutrient-dense diet supports healing and reduces recurrence risk✔️ Simple, actionable steps to support your body's detox, inflammation, and methylation pathways This episode will empower you to understand your unique genetic blueprint and how to make lifestyle changes that align with your body's needs. It's not about fear—it's about taking control of your health and making choices that truly support healing. Resources & Links:

“This is what totally drives the treatment decisions, and that's why having that pathology report when the nurse is educating the patient is so important, because you can say, well, you have this kind of breast cancer, and this kind of breast cancer is generally treated this way,” Suzanne Mahon, DNS, RN, AOCN®, AGN-BC, FAAN, professor emeritus at Saint Louis University in Missouri, told Jaime Weimer, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BS, AOCNS®, manager of oncology nursing practice at ONS, during a conversation about what oncology nurses need to know about breast cancer treatment.  Music Credit: “Fireflies and Stardust” by Kevin MacLeod  Licensed under Creative Commons by Attribution 3.0   Earn 1.0 contact hours (including 15 minutes of pharmacotherapeutic content) of nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) by listening to the full recording and completing an evaluation at courses.ons.org by February 14, 2027. The planners and faculty for this episode have no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to disclose. All women are going to have, and today when you use the word women, individuals assigned female at birth, they are the vast majority of individuals being treated for breast cancer, but for individuals assigned male at birth, there's not near as much research, but generally their treatment is very similar. So that's something to kind of keep in the back of your mind.” TS 2:39  “This is very confusing for patients because they're like, ‘Well, my friend at church had this and why am I getting this and why are they getting something different?' And that is because of the pathology report. So taking that time to explain that with a pathology, I think is really important.” TS 8:31  “When they see the breast surgeon, all individuals are going to have some kind of axillary evaluation.  Now, hopefully it's going to be a sentinel lymph node. So they're going to, at the time of surgery, put a tracer and, you know, they're going to take out maybe one, two, three lymph nodes and hopefully, you know, there is not a lot of disease there. And if that's the case, they're kind of done with that. So the sentinel lymph node evaluation, it's really more to stage and provide that information, but it kind of sets the stage a lot of times for the other treatments selections. And I think people need to realize that this is important. This is a very important procedure.” TS 15:31  “Years ago, when women had a breast mass, they went to the OR and it was biopsied in a frozen section and if it was positive, they had a mastectomy. So women would wake up and they'd be feeling their chest because they're like, ‘What happened here?' And that is not great care. It doesn't give that woman any autonomy, but it was the best that could be done at that point. Now, with the diagnostic where we can do a needle biopsy, they can kind of stop and take a timeout and we can kind of clinically stage that.” TS 17:04  “For women that really desire breast-conserving therapy, they can anticipate that postoperatively at some point, they're going to have treatment to the entire breast, we typically call whole breast radiation, and then they may have a boost. Now, in many, many probably cases, that's going to be over five to six weeks, Monday through Friday. So the treatment itself doesn't take but a couple of minutes, but you have to get to the facility. And even though we streamline check-in processes and whatnot, you have to get undressed, you have to get positioned on the table. So it is a commitment, and it can be disruptive.” TS 24:49  “The hormone-blocking agents are going to be the cornerstone of all those treatments for anyone who has hormone receptor–positive breast cancer. So they are going to take these agents and as you said, they're probably going to take them for 5–10 years. It's quite the journey.” TS 32:33   “I think you need to be mindful that if someone has had germline testing and they've tested positive, they are not only worried about themselves, and they are worried about the rest of their family. That is a big deal. And even though I'll hear mothers say, ‘I feel so guilty, now my daughter has this,' now, I've never heard a daughter come and say, ‘Gosh, I wish my mom hadn't had me because of this.' There's a lot of feeling and emotion that goes on with that, and realize that those individuals are probably going to have fairly complicated management that goes over and above their breast cancer.” TS 41:50

Today, I am honored to connect with my friend and colleague, Dr. Jenn Simmons. Dr. Simmons is an integrative oncologist, breast surgeon, author, podcast host, and the founder of Perfect Cutie Imaging.  In our discussion today, we dive into breast cancer statistics and the fact that most cases of breast cancer are preventable. We tackle the confusion caused by overdiagnosis, explain why mammograms can be problematic, and outline which breast cancer diagnoses are true emergencies. We provide clarity on the differences between various breast cancer types, the state of normal breast health, and how we have both estrogen and progesterone receptors. Dr. Simmons sheds light on DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) and explains why treatments like radiation may not always impact survival. We also examine the roles of trauma and alcohol in breast cancer risk, and we begin answering questions from listeners.  Don't miss this engaging, helpful, and proactive discussion with Dr. Jenn Simmons. We were wonderfully overwhelmed with all the questions we received, and with so much still to cover, I want to reassure everyone that we are already planning a follow-up AMA episode with Dr. Jenn. About Dr. Jenn Integrative Oncologist, Author, Podcast Host, and the founder of PerfeQTion Imaging Her journey into breast cancer care began with a personal tragedy. Every 13 minutes, a woman dies of breast cancer. And this unnecessary epidemic affects men, too. Today, you'll hear a fascinating interview with a woman on a mission to empower people to do more than just survive breast cancer, but become radiantly healthy; Dr. Toni Galardi. She's not only a holistic psychotherapist with a PhD in psychology, but a remarkable individual who cured herself of breast cancer. Dr. Galardi is a prolific author with three books under her belt, including her latest one titled BreastQuake: 10 Steps to Awakening from Breast Cancer. In this episode, we delve deep into the esoteric realm of breast cancer; discussing alternative methods for treatment, lowering the risk of breast cancer, and exploring groundbreaking studies that shed light on the incredible healing potential of consciousness within the body. You see, it's essential to understand that psychology plays a crucial role in the context of cancer. While psychology doesn't cause cancer, ignoring the mind-body connection in the conversation is a missed opportunity. Our bodies possess a remarkable intelligence, residing within our mitochondria, and a distributed consciousness that affects our well-being. So, even if you don't have breasts or breast cancer isn't on your radar, this conversation offers profound insights into psychology's impact on health and wellness.Dr. Toni Galardi is deeply passionate about helping women navigate their cancer treatment plans, emphasizing the importance of aligning with one's passions, as she believes that passion holds significant healing potential. Throughout this episode, you'll learn about Dr. Galardi's personal journey with breast cancer, the eye-opening studies she uncovered regarding the high cost of treatment, her recommendations for more affordable (and even free) healing tools, and her unique approach to harmonizing the energetic and emotional aspects of the human experience to combat cancer and reduce your risk. I want to extend my sincere appreciation to Dr. Toni Galardi for her courage in authoring this groundbreaking book and fearlessly addressing topics that some may question. Each year in the United States, about 240,000 women and 2,100 men are diagnosed with breast cancer. The average risk of a woman in the United States developing breast cancer sometime in her life is about 13%. This means there is a 1 in 8 chance she will develop breast cancer, which is why breast cancer awareness and screening are so important. In May 2023, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) lowered the breast cancer screening age from 50 to 40 – but do these age screenings apply to everyone? What factors contribute to a high-risk classification for breast cancer, and how do we identify if we are at genetic risk? We spoke with Lauren Nye, MD, board-certified oncologist at the University of Kansas Cancer Center and Clinical Medical Director of Breast Cancer Prevention, about the importance of assessing your cancer risk, learning your genetic history, and prioritizing your overall health.

Dr. Anne Peled, MD is a surgeon, an educator, a researcher, a mother, an athlete, and a breast cancer survivor. Just a few years into starting her own thriving breast cancer and plastic surgery practice, she was diagnosed with breast cancer herself, which gives her the unusual perspective of both the expert and the patient. With her husband Ziv Peled, MD, also a board-certified plastic surgeon, she is currently pioneering an entirely new way of treating breast cancer with a combined mastectomy and reconstruction technique that preserves the nipple, the skin, and the sensation, with manageable recovery and hospital time. She started researching this method of surgery when she herself was faced with the decision about what treatment to have for breast cancer, and there was no option like this available to her at that time. Her goal is for women to come out of her care feeling stronger than they ever have been, and it is this holistic approach to healthcare that is the underpinning to her practice and her teaching. We hope you enjoy this episode and share it with someone you know who may benefit from knowing this kind of procedure is an option if they are facing breast cancer.Subscribe & ReviewSubscribing and leaving a rating and review are important factors in helping the Reshape Your Health Podcast and the YouTube Channel reach more people.
