What is that on the horizon - well, it's Spring of course. The klaxon for warmer, longer days is finally sounding and Head Gardeners Saul and Lucy are looking forward to it immensely. Spring is a wonderful time of year but also incredibly busy for all professional gardeners up and down the country as the gardens come alive with colour, texture and the occasional weed! Join them both as they navigate this beautiful time of year, bringing you the sights and sounds of Stonelands and East Donyland, as well as their home gardens and beyond. With Saul taking a well deserved rest, Lucy delves into her past to explain why she is such a keen horticulturist. Now retired, her smallholder parents had a massive influence on her career choice. Their horticultural heritage also sheds light on a fascinating collective of market gardeners who, between them at their peak, produced 50 per cent of the UK's glasshouse salads. Termed the 'Land Settlement Agency', it brought many happy times for Lucy and her parents, as hopefully the interviews confirm (apologies to those two asparagus customers!!).If you'd like to watch the video I mention in this episode, follow this link, or search for 'Growth with the LSA':https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmvyX3RWv4QTwitter links:Lucy @HeadGardenerLCSaul @GardeningSaulIntro and Outro music from https://filmmusic.io"Fireflies and Stardust" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Support the showSupport the show

We're celebrating a LOT of things in the month of May! Today is Star Wars Day AND Morgan's fiance David's birthday! AND we play the game "Star Wars Character or A.I. Chatbot??" We're celebrating teachers this month too, and we asked teachers "what's the weirdest thing you've confiscated from a student?" Plus, Battle of the Burbs, Jay from Wickliffe was on the "Cleveland Confessional", he called up to confess why he just ended a relationship, and it's NOT a reason that endeared him to other single women in Cleveland. And, find out how you can order a drink from Morgan tonight!
When we think of airborne operations in WWII, the historiography is dominated by operations in the European Theatre. Parachute drops on Sicily, the Normandy coast for D-Day and into the Netherlands for Market Garden. But, in the Pacific, Joseph Swing's 11th Airborne Division - nicknamed the Angels - were making combat drops. They fought in some of the war's most dramatic campaigns, from bloody skirmishes in Leyte's unforgiving rainforests to the ferocious battles on Luzon, including the hellish urban combat of Manila. Joining me is James Fenelon. Long-time listeners might remember I chatted with James about the US 17th Airborne Division during Operation Varsity, the crossing of the Rhine. This time we are discussing James' new book Angels Against the Sun: A WWII Saga of Grunts, Grit, and Brotherhood. Patreonpatreon.com/ww2podcast
The Backyard Naturalist is a podcast about anything and everything related to nature. This week's topic: Building healthier soils builds a healthier you. With us in the studio from Terra Flora Farm and Roastery are Lawton James and Sean Simpson. From their website, “Sean, Maggie and their friend Lawton are currently cultivating just under an acre on their farm located in Norwood, North Carolina. They are leasing nine acres from a couple who are the current stewards of a portion of land southeast of Charlotte. They believe in the mantra "Know Thy Farmer" and encourage anyone with questions about the farm or their growing practices to find them at the farm or at one of their two current markets: Matthews Community Farmers' Market every Saturday from 8-12, or Uptown Farmers Market every Saturday 8-12:30.” We should be thinking about where our food comes from. If it's picked green and it trucks 2500 miles and it's irradiated to boot, that just might not be the healthiest solution for us. Let's think about this very mindfully and see what we can do to change that. Connect with the Backyard Naturalists on the Web, Facebook and Instagram. Please visit and support our presenting sponsor, Backyard Birds at http://www.thebirdfoodstore.com/. A mecca for bird lovers and bird watchers, Backyard Birds is an independent family-owned business located in Matthews, NC (next to Dairy Queen), just southeast of Charlotte. Thanks for listening to The Backyard Naturalists. We hope you have a day filled with the wonders of nature. Get outside and take a walk on the wild side! Hi everyone, it's Natalie. It's hard to believe this is my sixth episode for The No-Till Market Garden Podcast. It felt super intimidating to commit to finding and interviewing ten people, but it turns out to have been a lot of fun to talk with people I've admired from a distance and also some of my friends. For this episode, I talked with my friend and colleague, Sonja Birthisel. She is a weed ecologist and agroecologist by training, but her interests and expertise are wide and varied. We get into some of her research on the effects of tarping and solarizing on soil biology, important traits of weeds, seed predation, and her work in the community. Mentioned in the show... Hi everyone, it's Natalie, and for this episode I talked with Ryan Fitzbeauchamp of Evening Song Farm in Vermont. Ryan and his wife Kara have an incredible story to get where they are today with a thriving year-round CSA (yes, you heard that right, a year-round CSA in Vermont!). They include what is often called rotational no-till on the farm and this is a production system that is near-and-dear to my heart. What I mean by rorational no-till is that, while they haven't eliminated tillage altogether, they have dramatically reduced it across the farm and completely eleminated tillage prior to some crops. This system is sort of a middle way to get many of the benefits of no-till without the herbicides associated with conventional no-till or the heavy reliance on mulch, compost, or other external inputs that many small-scale organic no-till farms rely on to get started. It's seed starting time! I'd venture to say this is what we growers are live for! Watching seedlings grow in the depths of winter is the best mood lifter. Those of you in the Southern Hemisphere are likely gearing up for your late summer sowings for cool annuals too. So it seemed like a great time to do a deeper dive into seed sowing with my old friend and seed starting pro, Lisa Mason Zeigler from the Gardener's Workshop. Lisa literally wrote the book, called Cool Flowers, on starting seeds for early spring crops. She's been flower farming for 25 years and runs a seed supply house. She's also the host of the Field & Garden podcast, which you should check out if you haven't already. In this episode, Lisa and I talk all about seeds. Everything from seed storage tips to creating a living soil with natural inputs to even a bit about sowing by the biodynamic calendar. Hey everyone, it's Alex Ball with another episode of the No-Till Market Garden Podcast! I'm really excited to share a conversation with you all from Adam of Country Valley Farm in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In the interview we get into building new no-till beds with deep woodchips, animal pressure on the farm, the realities of farming with a full-time job, and producing garlic for the wholesale market. A big thanks to Adam for sitting down to share all the work he and his family are doing at CVF. He has such a love for not only ecological farming, but for feeding his community and sharing the positivity that comes with being in touch with the land. I was really impressed by his deep wood chip compost method for building organic matter and I think i'm going to trial his technique on my own farm. If you want to learn more about their farm or are just looking for organic seed garlic, check out their website and their social media for more information. Thanks so much for listening! It's 2023 and we've fought through the best and worst of this Covid outbreak like soldiers defending the Market Garden, but it's time to kick it all to the curb and return this podcast to the glory it once was! This week we welcome both J/O/E and Gabby into the Temple to talk about music, […] The post Show 507 – J/O/E and Gabby Enter the Temple appeared first on The Jerry Jonestown Massacre.
In this episode, I speak with author Martin Dugard about his book Taking Berlin: The bloody Race To Defeat The Third Reich. Martin Dugard, #1 New York Times bestselling coauthor of Bill O'Reilly's Killing series, comes a nonfiction thriller about the race between the Allies and Soviets to conquer the heart of Nazi Germany. Fall, 1944. Paris has been liberated, and saved from destruction, but this diversion on the road to Berlin has given the Germans time to regroup. The American and British armies press on from the west, facing the enemy time and again in the Hurtgen Forest, during the Market-Garden invasion, and at the Battle of the Bulge, all while American general George Patton and British field marshal Bernard Montgomery vie for supremacy as the Allies' top battlefield commander.
It's about to get real nerdy, folks. We at No-Till Growers have always wanted to bring in more of the research and science from someone who really understands it. Natalie Lounsbury, herself, is a no-till and cover crop RESEARCHER at the University of New Hampshire, a legitimate scientist, and you may remember her from the Priming for Production Podcast series on soil organic matter. Go back and listen to it if you haven't already, it's one of our favorite things on the internet. Ever. In this mini-interview, she and I get into how the Serial podcast series changed her approach, her experience/research background, and how I should probably apologize to diakon radish. Her first contribution to the series will be next Monday. You don't want to miss it, it's a heavy subject, but one we as growers could all use a little science lesson on. This week I travel to Bell Tower Brewing in Kent, Ohio. My guest for this episode is Jennifer Hermann who is one of the co-owners as well as the head brewer for Bell Tower. In this interview we talk about the history of the brewery from it being in church in the mid 1800s to it becoming the home of a commercial laundry equipment company, and then later becoming Kent's 3rd brewery. Jennifer talks about her early fascination with beer that led to her home brewing and then later volunteering at Thirsty Dog and Hoppin Frog. Eventually she landed a brewing gig at Market Garden in Cleveland and the rest is history. During the interview we sampled the following beers Sci-uri-dae (Schwartzbier) - 4.4% 1858 (American Porter) – 6% Geist der Glocke (German Pilsner) – 5% Cinquième (Wet Hopped Saison) – 6.6% Greenhorn (Wet Hopped IPA) – 6.7% Support the show by doing your Amazon shopping through our affiliate link. Benina Montez, of Burroughs Family Farms, is a badass FOURTH generation farmer in the Central Valley of California. She has been farming alongside her family and made the shift to regenerative organic certification for their almonds, walnuts, and olives. They also produce pastured chickens and lamb through silvopasture. It's really cool to hear from someone like Benina who has experienced the journey from not only something conventional to something regenerative, but also what it means to BE a fourth generation farmer and how you have to continuously move the bar to remain a relevant family farm. Benina is super awesome, honest, and has a lot to offer people who are curious about how it can all be done regeneratively in tree systems with silvopasture. Folks who make the show possible... Welcom BACK to yet another exciting season of The No-Till Market Garden Podcast. As mentioned at the end of last season, I--Jesse--will not be hosting this year. My role now is more of a producer for the suite of podcasts we publish at No-Till Growers. It's been super fun and I've greatly enjoyed listening behind the scenes to these first interviews with our new hosts. Speaking of new hosts, we want to start introducing them to you one by one over the next few weeks, beginning with the one and only Mimi Casteel of Hope Well Vineyard. Mimi's first interview will be coming out next Monday, officially kicking off season FIVE. #087: A week ahead of the 5 year anniversary of the infamous "Jacksonville Decision" where the NOSB decided to illegally allow hydroponics under the USDA Organic label, Real Organic Project co-founder Davey Miskell sits down to talk about his early days in farming and in founding both Vermont Organic Farmers and the Real Organic Project. David "Davey" Miskell is the co-founder of Real Organic Project, a founding member of Vermont Organic Farmers (now the certifying agency run by NOFA VT), and a longtime organic farmer who owned and operated Miskell's Premium Organics, known for their tomatoes and greens. David and his wife Susan were the first farmers to run the Market Garden at the Inn at Shelburne Farms, where they remained for 25 years and raised their daughters Tessa and Susannah. He currently serves as an inspector for Real Organic Project, covering all farms in Vermont and sometimes beyond. To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/davey-miskell-keep-the-soil-in-organic-episode-eighty-sevenThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

Together, we relax and celebrate the 12th anniversary of The Permaculture Podcast with Scott Mann. Erin Harvey, and I met one another and became friends in 2010 when we took our Permaculture Design Course with Ben Weiss and Dillon Naber Cruz in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After graduating, Erin returned to Ohio to begin her own farm, The Kale Yard. Erin was one of the first guest on the show, back in early 2013, when we talked about how she started The Kale Yard. If you haven't heard that, you'll find a link to that interview in the show notes. Today, we talk about how life has changed over the last decade, including The Kale Yard transitioning from a Market Garden to a nursery business, and Erin's current role as a farmers market manager and what that means for both her, the farmers, and the community they serve. We also spend some time on her interest in propagating figs and other plants; the role of a hoop house and greenhouse on her farm; and what Erin sees in her future.
