In this episode, I am excited to welcome back Dr. Ned Hallowell back on the show, this time we are talking about his new book ADHD 2.0. We do a deep dive into a couple of key areas in his book: Why he likes to change the name from ADHD to VAST (Variable Attention Stimulus Trait), he explains why we do not have a deficit of attention. How if we manage ADHD it can enhance our lives and can become your superpower. The main focus of this episode is Dr. Ned’s explanation of the regions of the brain called Task Positive Network and Default Mode Network and when these regions are not working effectively we go into extreme negative self-talk. He talks about a few simple but effective ways of managing negative self-talk. Towards the end of this episode, he talks about the importance of the cerebellum in the brain that occupies only 10% of brain volume but has 70% of the neurons in the brain and its connection to the executive functions of the brain. Also, stay tuned to the end as Dr. Ned continues to share some amazing gold in our wrap-up conversation. I highly recommend his new book ADHD 2.0, it is truly a simple but yet effective guide to better understand ADHD and effective ways to manage it. If you come across a Wall Street trader, an ER physician, a trial lawyer, a sky-diving instructor, a trapeze artist, or a stand-up comedian, more than likely there is a race-car brain that has been well channelled in spite of its high propensity for intense stimulation and a desire to live on the edge. It was an absolute pleasure to talk to Dr. Ned Hallowell in this special mini-episode. When I got my diagnosis of ADHD, the first book that I picked up on ADHD was Driven to Distraction (audiobook) by Dr. Hallowell. This book provided so much insight and clarity into my ADHD and for the first time, I didn’t feel alone in my head. Since then I have been listening to his podcast and continuing to follow his work on ADHD. I am super excited to share this episode with you and truly grateful that he accepted my invitation to come to my show. We talked about how to adjust to new working conditions Ie. working from home. He talked about the importance of creating meaningful connections. The value of working with a coach to manage your ADHD, to disclose or not about your ADHD in the workplace, and finally his point of view on what steps to take if you have been diagnosed late in life with ADHD. For many of us, our relationship with Dr. Edward Hallowell, M.D., Ed.D., started with his best-selling 1994 book, Driven to Distraction. He's the author of 20 books on various psychological topics and is a highly recognized international speaker on ADHD, focus, productivity, and beyond. He’s the founder of The Hallowell Centers, and has been featured as a guest expert across the media landscape, not to mention he’s a terrific host of his own podcast, DISTRACTION, which focuses on, you guessed it, the struggles and distractions of this amped up world. Dr. Hallowell joins us today to talk about self-esteem. It’s a subject that creeps in and out of our community regularly with questions that angle on our perception of self, our sometimes flagging love and appreciation of ourselves, and who better to help us assess self-esteem and the ADHD role in our self-perception than one of the premier leaders in our field and the ADHD experience. Jun 04: Brendan Kiely’s Tradition May 16, 2018 High school English teacher Brendan Kiely was always on the hunt for books that would not only excite his students to learn the skills needed to study and practice in class, but also inspire them to think critically about their role in society, developing who they are and helping form their beliefs. Award-winning author Kiely explores the insidious nature of a traditional boarding school in Tradition (is not an excuse). Brendan is a New York Times bestseller whose numerous awards include the Walter Dean Myers Award, and Best Fiction for Young Adults by the American Library Association twice. Later, Dr. Edward M. Hallowell turned an eye inward towards his emotionally complex upbringing, using it to build a successful life and career. He chronicles his childhood inspiration in his new memoir, Because I Come From a Crazy Family: The Making of a Psychiatrist. Dr. Hallowell is a bestselling author of over 20 books on attention deficit disorder and emotional well-being. He is founder of the Hallowell Centers for Cognitive and Emotional Health, one of which is based in Seattle. His national tour brings him to University Bookstore in Seattle on June 15th.
