This week, we're joined by Dr. Wendy Smith, author of Both/And Thinking, to uncover how embracing paradoxes can help us tackle life's toughest problems. As a full year of this podcast comes to a close, I invite you to ask yourself, “Why do I practice?”. There are times in life that feel dark, when the events of life simply don't make sense. In these times, when we're tempted to abandon all semblance of spirituality, are the times when we have the choice to let our practice hold us. On this Friday the 13th, take some time to remember the feminine, the cycles of life, the process of death and rebirth. Life cannot exist without both. As we walk through the woods, may we honor all of blessings this year has brought, along with any of the heartache we hold. It is possible to carry both. May your practice bring you comfort and purpose through all your days. Thank you for sharing this year with me. Many blessings to all my fellow seekers. What am I reading? The Life Impossible by Matt HaigThe Comfy Cozy Guide to Making Magic in Your Everyday Life by Jennie Blonde What am I listening to on repeat?Witchy Woman by the Eagles What's for dinner?Autumn Bowl Ingredients2 cups arugula ½ cup quinoa cooked1 small sweet potato roasted½ apple ¼ cup chickpeas rinsed2 tablespoons dried cranberries2 tablespoons goat cheesefor the dressing:2 tablespoons tahini 1 tablespoon maple syrup Instructions:Cook quinoa, and roast the sweet potatoes until fork tender (roast in 425 degree oven).Add the arugula to a bowl, then top it with the cooked quinoa, roasted sweet potatoes, apple, chickpeas, cranberries, and goat cheese. Make the dressing: whisk tahini and maple syrup together until they're well combined. Drizzle the dressing over the bowl and enjoy!Pumpkin Pie Yogurt Bowl2 cups Greek yogurt1/2 cup pumpkin puree2 tablespoons maple syrup1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice1/4 cup granola1 tablespoon chopped pecans, walnuts, or almonds Instructions:In a bowl, mix the Greek yogurt with pumpkin puree, maple syrup, and pumpkin pie spice until well combined.Top each bowl with granola and chopped pecans.Enjoy!

What the Health?!?
Are Microplastics Slowly Killing Us?

What the Health?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2024 49:39

What does the term "microplastics" mean to you? Why is seemingly everyone talking about them lately?  A new study published on March 6th in the New England Journal of Medicine titled, “Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Atheromas and Cardiovascular Events" has been circulating around the internet, and raises concerns about the risk of exposure to microplastics and long-term adverse health outcomes. What does this study suggest? What does the other data about microplastics show? Our exposure to plastics is ubiquitous; its in our packaging, our clothing, in our air and water. The chemical additives used in plastics manufacturing are also worrisome, as they have demonstrated adverse health effects in animal models. As we have hammered home in many prior episodes, DOSE and EXPOSURE matter when it comes to risk of harm from a particular substance. The same rules seem to apply for microplastics. In today's episode, Jeremy explains what we do and don't know about the risks of long term exposure to microplastics. He ends with some actionable items on how you can choose to limit your exposure with some simple daily behavioral changes. Resources for this episode include: The very recent NEJM article titled "Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Atheromas and Cardiovascular Events". A 2022 Frontiers in Endocrinology study regarding endocrine changes in mammals related to exposure to micro/nano plastics. A May 2023 article from National Geographic titled "Microplastics are in our bodies. How much do they harm us?" A March 19th, 2024 Everyday Health article on microplastics. An EcoWatch article titled "10 Simple Ways to Avoid Microplastics in Your Everyday Life". Thanks for tuning in, folks! Please sign up for our "PULSE CHECK" monthly newsletter! Let's give this episode its full working title... How the Law of Attraction Works in Your Everyday Life.Yes, that's what this episode covers. It ties up all the components that, when put together in the right fashion, on a daily basis, will change your life beyond what your thinking mind could ever imagine. In this episode, I cover how to set your mind - how to notice opportunity, how to create opportunity and how to recognise synchronicity. And, most importantly, how to act on all of the above - free from the inhibitions that would always otherwise stop the normal crazy mind in its tracks. This exploration of the Law of Attraction is, then, a call to action - effortless action, so effortless that, oh so often, owners of my online program, The Psychology of Success, tell me that their success "feels as if it just happened".I also touch on that book (the one that I suggest you shouldn't read) "The Secret" and explain that the real secret isn't a secret at all, it's something that flows naturally when you've looked after your own state of mind. What's that something that flows naturally? It's called presence and, when you have it, you are oh so very attractive.

Those who know David Jimenez and his life journey often take a sigh of adoration followed by a smile and comment, “He is living the dream”. And indeed to us Francophiles, he is indeed. Having called Paris home for the past six years, American interior designer living in Paris David Jimenez partnered with Diane Dorrans Saeks to bring to readers Parisian by Design: Interiors by David Jimenez.  Parisian by Design showcases the seven residences he has called home over his life journey of decorating, beginning in San Francisco, moving to Kansas City, then to his apartments in Paris that lead him to his now sanctuary on the City of Light, his apartment on Île Saint-Louis, as well as his design atelier on the same petite Île and, what I think is my favorite of all of his abodes, although each is inviting and quintessential European in its aesthetic with a strong affinity for Parisian touches, his apartment in the French countryside (see pics below from David's IG account). In our hour-long conversation, David will introduce readers to what they will find in the book which includes a 10-page source list for you too to enjoy and peruse first-hand David's personal recommended shops, artisans and destinations, not only in Paris, but beyond, and we will also dive deeper because David made his dream a reality - calling Paris home. Exploring how he trusted his journey from a very early age along with sharing what he has learned along the way to be the best life advice for knowing what to do next, we talk about nudges from the universe, trusting yourself and so much more. Oh! And his Petit Plaisir is Petit Plaisirs! Yes, David shares multiple Petit Plaisirs in the middle of our conversation, painting a picture for our minds through the senses that, if you are anything like me, will inspire and remind how powerfully rejuvenating savoring everyday seasonal pleasures can be. But I don't want to give too much away.

Do you believe in Astrology? Astrology can long be traced back to ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and Babylon, which is now known as modern day Iraq and it was considered a science. Before cars and electricity, our ancestors who were more in sync to the world's rhythms, were able to make connections to mark the seasons and the tides. Since then it has been knowledge only shared to a few. However, why is Astrology important we understand? This is because it can help us understand ourselves as well as others on a more deeper level. Part 1 of this podcast series will cover a basic understanding of our mind, with an emphasis on diverting our mind to positive emotions. This basic understanding will give you the right perspective and create a solid foundation in your thinking. This knowledge will also enable you with a strong foundation, which will assist you with the practice defined in every chapter. This episode will cover how to develop a robust sub-conscious mind. One-eighth of our mind is the conscious mind, and the remaining seven-eighths is the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind does not understand positive or negative emotions. It only understands deep and shallow emotions. Our subconscious mind is engineered like this: wherever it perceives deep emotions, it believes that you want more and more in your life. It will understand that recurrence is what you are seeking. So, it is important to train our subconscious mind in the direction of deep and positive emotions. The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style

Season 6 of The Simple Sophisticate is well underway as 2019 wraps up and we head into 2020. As I reflect back to September 2014 when the show premiered, I could not have fathomed the engagement it would inspire, the topics and books we would cover and explore nor the people who would wish to be on the show. This year, Apple changed its categories for podcasts, and in so doing prompted me to reconsider how to label the show for new and potential listeners, which turned out to be a boon for the show and new listeners discovering it. With the help of you, the listeners the podcast and readers of TSLL, the selections that were decided upon (#1— Education: Self-Improvement; #2 — Society & Culture; #3 — Leisure: Home & Garden) in no small part contributed to the podcast reaching #33 in the United States' ALL-Time Self-Improvement podcasts. And, as the podcast has a strong Francophile following, when episode #269 - 32 Ways to Be Parisian Chic went live earlier this month, the podcast soared to #5 for the daily Self-Improvement podcasts. As listeners share how and when they listen to the show — while running the NYC marathon, while spring cleaning, while starting the day in Australia, while commuting via car or train or subway, while walking/running with their pups, while strolling along a river in the European countryside, while strolling through a park throughout the vast United States, while winding down at the end of the day in a cozy abode in Canada, and in so many countries around the globe as listeners go about their lives (the show ranked #16 in South Africa, #12 in Hong Kong, #23 in Romania, #6 in Oman, and #2 in Spain!) — I am humbled as well as tickled to realize how TSLL community stretches far and wide, but more so how similiar we are no matter where we call home regarding our interests to live a life of contentment, a life of deep joy and understanding of the world around us as we strive to contribute positively to its future as we savor the everyday moments. How to rankings work? The combination of number of downloads and positive reviews and rankings drive up a show on the charts, and for both of these contributions by listeners, I want to say thank you. So many of you have left positive reviews and high rankings, and as I try to share all of the reviews, sprinkling a few in each podcast episode, thank you for your time to share specifically what draws you to the show. "A home should reveal the personalities of its inhabitants. At its best it should be a portrait of who you are . . . Look at your house as an artist would and have fun creating vignettes as a painter would a still life." —Kristin Perers, author of A Home for All Seasons Fall will arrive next week on the 23rd and spring for the southern hemispheren on the same date. The changing of the seasons, as I recently shared in an interview on the Synced Life podcast, is a consistent and dependable way to be present in our everyday lives. By choosing to be present during each season we are acknowledging that its presence in our lives is evanescent, fleeting and in three months' time will transition into something different. Waiting nine more months is necessary to experience the gifts of each season. Simply knowing the reality, we have all the more motivation to revel in the gifts of each season. Last month TSLL reader Tracy emailed me and introduced me to Kristin Perers' book, A Home for All Seasons which was released quite a few years ago. But as one might imagine, since we have the same seasons each year, it is a classic of a book to refer to every three months - if nothing else, to serve a reminder for ample inspiration. Perers suggests that when we decorate with the seasons, revolving with them, we make our home feel much more alive and dynamic, but at the same time, reflective of the home's inhabitants. And in so doing, we improve the quality of our days as our moods due to our emotions are elevated with each day we spend in our sanctuary. Below are a handful of ways to decorate and adorn seasonally as inspired by Perers' book. 1.Let the seasonal blooms make their statement Whether you pick up your blooms at the farmers' market or from your yard and garden, appreciating the daffodils in early spring, the peonies in late spring, mums in fall and dahlias in late summer, remind us to savor until the blooms are no more. 2. Textiles - slipcovers, curtains, table linens, bed linens, pillows Depending upon what you have in your home that is upholstered, if you have slipcovers, changing the type of fabric if not the color as well is a way to eagerly begin a new season as well as care properly for the linens you have. 3. Determine the focal points of each community room (living room, dining, kitchen, etc.), and change or decorate it differently for the seasons. For example, if your fireplace is the focal point, adorn the mantle with seasonal details. If your dining table is the focal point, either with table linens or blooms, choose what you place on top of it to align with the seasons. 4. Create space to contemplate the beauty of nature I love this suggestion that Perers makes, and while she suggestions physically bringing things in from outside and placing them about the home to prompt us to ponder nature's beauty, I think as well it would be delightful to create somewhere in the home where you can look outside and be cognizant of what season it is. For example, my parents have a sun room in their country home, and with each season my mom will rearrange the furniture: spring - space is made for young seedlings in preparation for planting in the coming months; in summer, ample seating is the preference as it serves as a wonderful place to soak up the sun when stepping outside due to work projects inside is not possible; autumn and the arrangements and bouquets change; and in the winter, the holiday tree is adorned for the festive, wintery season. All the while, we can see outside to observe and celebrate the beauty of the outdoors. 5. Give the bedroom special attention While making sure to attend to all four of the previous items above for our bedrooms — different blankets, duvet covers and pillow covers for the bed; seasonal blooms for the side table, etc. — always keep in mind the power of a space we inhabit, especially in such an intimate fashion as our bedrooms. Here are a few ways to welcome the changing of the seasons in our most intimate room of our sanctuary: Different candle scents for each season Intentional framed photos or artwork to inspire your most current dream. Linen curtains in the summer, and while selecting the same hue, choose a heavier fabric for late fall and winter to add warmth. Different robes and sleepwear for each season. ~Discover and learn more about Kristin Perers' book A Home for All Seasons SIMILAR POSTS/EPISODES from the Archives You Might Enjoy: ~Why Not . . . For decades spiritual and self help literature has encouraged people to go within to heal old wounds, nourish egos and coddle one's inner child. Myss says, "I think we’ve developed an idea that approaching God could be done any way we want and that it doesn't require prayer, reflection, or contemplation. We've substituted therapy for devotion." She points out that the intellect is not a spiritual practice. In order to live a life of meaning we must go beyond a life of acquisitions and move into a life of devotion. Her own path has taken her deeply into the world of Saint Teresa of Avila, the 16th Century Spanish Carmelite nun and mystic Saint whose profound writings continue to have an impact on any serious seeker. Myss exhorts and inspires us to participate in the search for this ultimate spiritual reality as expressed by Teresa of Avila.  Caroline Myss’ books include Invisible Acts of Power: Channeling Grace in Your Everyday Life (Free Press 2004), Sacred Contracts: Awakening Your Divine Potential (Harmony 2001), Why People Don't Heal and How They Can (Harmony 1997), Anatomy of the Spirit: The Seven Stages of Power and Healing (Harmony 1996), Archetypes: Who Are You? Today, Laurie joins us to talk about how to live inspired after our personal tragedies. Whether divorce, bankruptcy, a natural disaster or anything in between: A "trauma" is anything that leaves you feeling like you've lost your control, your safety or your identity. My friends, we've all had challenges. Today's episode will directly help you overcome yours. SHOW NOTES: If you like this podcast, you will love Live Inspired IN STUDIO. Dr. Laurie Nadel shared how she was able to better relate to her mother after learning about the Myers Briggs personality types. Dr. Laurie Nadel's first book was a 4-time bestseller + on Oprah's book club twice: Sixth Sense: The Whole-Brain Book of Intuition, Hunchies, Gut Feelings, and Their Place in Your Everyday Life  "This book changes lives, in terms of understanding how how you think and process who you are." Her most recent book came out in April 2018: The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing and Strength When Disaster Strikes "This is a tool for people in the midst of tragedy. Open it and something will pop out you can use for self care." The 5 Gifts: humility, patience, empathy, forgiveness, growth.  Something like a school shooting or natural disaster, they rip away the fabric of what we thought normal was. When they occur, we have to find a way of balancing in the midst of emotional chaos for sometime. You can swipe it away when you see it on your screen, but when it happens to you in real life, you can’t change the channel. At a certain point you're out of shock and can start to think about next week instead of just getting through the day. When we start to feel like we can get through a week is when we have the strength or enlarged capacity to connect with people as a result of what we’ve been through. Three Cycles of Loss (when you can't go back to who you were before the injury, car accident, bankruptcy, tragic event): Loss of control of your physical environment. Loss of safety, you may be emotionally fragile. Loss of identity / who you are now. For another "Live Inspired" take on this topic, check out Ep. #4 with Michaela Haas as she explores + explains: Post Traumatic Growth. DR. LAURIE NADEL’S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Catcher in the Rye and Catch 22. These two seminal books of the 60s have characters who are authentic and think in questions. They question authority. I admire them and hope I never stop questioning.  2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? My imagination has been tempered by reality and the real world. I was an excellent creative writer, I made up stories. I wish I had a more active imagination. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? I would have grabbed the original edition of the Wizard of Oz that I was saving for my grandchildren. The beautiful books from my childhood were destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Dan Rather, I’m fortunate and privileged that he has been my mentor, believer and supporter of my book. I’m always fascinated by what he has to say with where we are now in America as compared to all of the cycles he has seen in the course of his lifetime and what we can learn from that to move forward and be more empathetic. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Dan always gives me great advice: Just keep writing. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Calm down a little bit. I was definitely wild. I wouldn’t want to clip her wings or put the breaks on, but I have a lot of people who come into my practice for therapy in their mid to late 20s because what we learn during this season is that the rules of life and family culture we learn through childhood don’t always apply to the world at large. The world is very different when you actually get out there and have to make your way in it. Be careful but be open. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. Crypto and Blockchain Talk - Making You Smarter
EPISODE 15: Using Crypto in Your Everyday Life

Crypto and Blockchain Talk - Making You Smarter

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2018 13:18

Using Crypto in Your Everyday Life   Most of us have wondered at first: “Why is cryptocurrency even a thing? What is the difference between numbers in a bank account versus numbers on a crypto wallet?”   Banking still relies on technology built in the 1970s, and plain old paper trails. Why should we wait days for deposits and withdraws to clear, wire transfers to be sent, and cashier checks to be printed and mailed, when we can email someone around the world in 5 seconds? Finally, institutional banking and government is catching onto that the answer to that problem is cryptocurrencies based on blockchain technology.   PayPal was one of the most revolutionizing service that pushed online shopping further after a long stalemate, adding another layer of safety and anonymity between the buyer and the seller (and anybody else trying to take a peak illegally). PayPal was never a currency though, just a payment gateway, providing a debit card linked to your PayPal balance that kept US dollars.   When Bitcoin came around, it brought a novel idea to the table called Proof of Work to make sure that each transaction was legitimate and transparent which is stored on something called the blockchain that anyone could read and be held accountable for. It gave the world of online currencies the chance it needed.   While the whole cryptocurrency field is yet to be accepted by the majority, there are already plenty of real life use cases for them right now:     ATMs Go to https://coinatmradar.com/ and find the nearest ATM that converts cash into crypto. Crypto ATMs are already serving over 70 countries! This might not appeal to someone who only travels to the local grocery store and back in a large country like the United States. However, for someone living in Europe, where you could drive through two or three countries in a day, it would be greatly convenient to be able to carry only one currency that is accepted everywhere.   Online Stores Many places are taking crypto-payments, and a good place to start looking to see which physical shops take crypto is http://coinmap.org. In terms of online shops, you might have heard of a few of these places mentioned below: Overstock.com Microsoft.com Shopify.com Newegg.com Dish.com (Dish Network) Expedia.com eGifter.com Reddit.com Subway.com   And there are hundreds more. You can even shop on Amazon through a portal called https://purse.io   Pay Bills Over 45,000 companies are registered at https://www.billpayforcoins.com/SearchPayees.php to accept some form of cryptocurrency as payment for your electric bill, gas bill, insurance bill, etc.   Crypto debit cards There are also a large handful of services offering cryptocurrency debit cards that withdraw directly from your crypto/blockchain account. These typically can only access a few of the major cryptocurrencies, but that is good enough! Do your research if you’re interested in one of these, or wait for a future article comparing several different ones. Beware, there is very high demand, so a long wait time is likely for the more desirable cards.   Each currency has their own accounts stored on the blockchain with the balances and access codes, which can be accessed directly from a phone app. There are specialized apps (Exodus and Jaxx, just to name two) that are built that will access to many different wallets, through one easy to use interface, so paying for gas at a gas station will be as easy as scanning a QR code at the pump with your phone, and then filling up.   There is still a lot of evolution needed in this segment of the market, before mass adoption and every day common use can take place, so keep your expectations tempered for the time being. This week is "Zen week" on the ZfEL podcast and this week's guided meditation is the traditional Zen meditation practice of Zazen (literally meaning "sitting/seated meditation" in Japanese). I covered this meditation practice in a previous episode, however, I felt it could have been better and didn't express the nuances of the practice as well as it could have as compared to secular mindfulness or Vipassana mindfulness meditation practice, so I've decided to do a new (and much better) version. Also, don't forget to check out this week's second episode, episode #36, How to Live with the Spirit of Zen in Your Everyday Life. This is a subject I haven't much talked about yet on the podcast and so I'm excited to be talking about it with you now. Thank you for listening. Last week we talked about Faith, Hope and Love. We discovered that Hope is like the root of a tree and Faith and Love are the branches. A strong and well-nourished root produces good fruit! Faith and Love improve our service in that they influence how we interact with the people around us. People of Faith and Love are attractive and contagious. This week we are continuing along on that theme and focusing on the fact that apprentices of Jesus serve others. In our text the Apostle Paul points out four incentives for unity and four lifestyle changes that should result from our life in Christ. To put this in terms of last week’s study: "When we live the Gospel story, we act in ways that serve others." Or to summarize our text another way: "Since we are all apprentices of Jesus, we should act like it." After all, Jesus served others. In fact we might say that we could summarize his life by saying: "He came, he served, and he died." He didn't build a church, he never organized a fundraiser, he founded no Bible Colleges or Seminaries; He just came and served and died. It was all for us. Paul challenges the Philippians to complete his joy by living out the Gospel in very practical ways. This would make him very happy; to see the lifestyle of the people of God look like the lifestyle of our founder. In particular we want to focus on the third and fourth lifestyle changes he encourages: Don't have selfish ambition, but with humility consider others better than ourselves; and look beyond our own interests to the interests of others. Both of these lifestyle choices are predicated upon our understanding or our safe and secure position in Christ. Once we are assured that we are on the right track and our future is secure, we can look beyond ourselves to the needs of others. Again we see the importance of hope. When followers of Jesus live a life of service they have the added benefit of enjoying a rewarding and fulfilled life. Wanting and needing to be served by others is not life producing, but soul destroying. We gain by what we give away. Questions for Discussion: 1. Slide 2. What do you think it means to be "in Christ." The Apostle Paul uses this expression 150 times but it is not found elsewhere in the New Testament. 2. Slide 3. Have you found occasions when unity takes a lot of hard work? Was it worth it? Why or Why not? 3. Slide 6. Do some Christians have an especially hard time living out their faith? Why? What do they seem to lack, if anything? 4. Slide 7. Discuss times when you have experiences one of these four incentives for unity that Paul mentions in verse 1 5. Slide 8. Read 1:4 and 4:10 to see the other times Paul talks about his joy. What causes it? 6. Slide 9-11. Of the first three lifestyle issues is one more difficult than the others? Why or why not? If we perceive servants as being somehow lower or less esteemed than those they serve, what does that do for our view of Christ who was the ultimate servant? How do we get over that false narrative revealed in our prejudice toward those serving others? 7. Slide 12-14. Do you see the balance in Paul's comment: "look not only to your own interests?" Some followers of Jesus neglect their own families for the cause of Christ, why? What is Paul's concern? See 1 Timothy 5:8. 8. Discuss how you might serve others: At Work; At Home; At School; and in Your Everyday Life this week.
