In this eye-opening episode of the Why Intervention Podcast, host Christopher Doyle interviews Heather Hayes, founder and CEO of Heather R. Hayes and Associates, Inc., a master's level licensed counselor and board registered interventionist with over 35 years of experience in treating complex mental health issues and addictive disorders.   Guest's Info Heather Hayes is the founder and CEO of Heather R. Hayes & Associates, Inc. She is a Master's level Licensed Counselor in the State of Georgia, and Board Registered Interventionist (CIP). With over 35 years of experience in treating clients with complex mental health issues and the full spectrum of addictive disorders, she has worked with clients of all ages and specializes in the treatment of trauma. As the globe's most prominent authorities on these topics, she is widely-recognized for her trauma-informed responsive approach to intervention.   Highlights   The shocking truth about what's really behind "denial" in families affected by addiction – it's not what you think, and understanding this changes everything Why telling an addict to "just stop" is like telling someone with a broken leg to "just walk" – the crucial brain chemistry factor most families completely miss The dangerous trap of "compassion" that actually keeps your loved one stuck in addiction (and what real compassion looks like instead) The "cucumber to pickle" phenomenon that explains why some people can experiment with substances while others are instantly hooked How standard treatment models are catastrophically failing teenagers – and the minimum effective dosage required according to research that almost no one follows Why kicking someone out might be the worst thing you can do – but letting them stay could be equally destructive (and the precise third option that works) The internet trap that's sending thousands of desperate families into the hands of the highest bidder rather than the best help The revolutionary six-month family commitment that transformed Heather's entire approach to intervention Why today's drug landscape gives parents zero room for error – the terrifying reality of what's actually in street drugs now The hostage negotiation techniques Heather adapted for family intervention that change everything about how we approach resistance How trauma-informed care has completely revolutionized intervention – moving from confrontation to connection while maintaining boundaries The counterintuitive reason why bringing recovered addicts to speak to teens actually INCREASES drug experimentation   Listen now to discover why Heather Hayes is considered one of the foremost authorities on intervention and learn how her trauma-informed, responsive approach might be exactly what your family needs. Today's episode is not only timely but truly one of the most impactful and informative conversations you might hear. This conversation is about drug addiction. A report recently released stated there were over 93,000 drug overdose deaths in 2020 which is nearly a 30% increase from the year before.    My fear is that these numbers will continue to climb. This episode is going to be a masterclass on drug addiction and recovery. It is going to feature different parts from three previously released conversations surrounding these topics. We will talk statistics, causes and solutions. You will discover contributing factors and also hear a few transformation stories.   The first part will feature renowned interventionist and hostage negotiator Heather Hayes as she provides some staggering statistics on what we are facing, what's causing the epidemic and how to know if someone is having addiction issues. Then you will hear from health and wellness influencer Arielle Lorre and Internet personality Mike Majlak as they both share their riveting stories of overcoming addiction. The episode will then become more solution-oriented as you hear from Heather again on practical steps to take if someone is suffering with addiction as well as advice from Arielle and Mike.    My hope is that after listening to this conversation you will feel educated, hopeful, and inspired to take action or be prepared to take action if you or a loved one are ever suffering from addiction.    Links to full episodes featured in this conversation:   Arielle Lorre:   https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/arielle-lorre-deep-dive-on-addiction-recovery-wellness/id1496406333?i=1000515322639   Heather Hayes:   https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/heather-hayes-nation-thats-being-held-hostage-by-addiction/id1496406333?i=1000515777062   Mike Majlak:   https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/from-drug-addict-to-internet-celebrity-redemption-story/id1496406333?i=1000518614684   Connect with Arielle Lorre:    Website : https://theblondefiles.com/   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ariellelorre   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ariellelorre/   Twitter: https://twitter.com/ariellelorre   Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-blonde-files-podcast/id1458992375   Connect with Heather:    Website : https://www.heatherhayes.com/   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heatherrhayes/   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HeatherRHayesInc   Connect with Mike Majlak:   Instagram: www.instagram.com/heybigmike   Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMk0u-pViW-Ff4F9SAGcI4g   Twitter: www.twitter.com/mikemajlak   Buy Mike Majlak's book "The 5th Vital": https://www.amazon.com/Fifth-Vital-Mike-Majlak/dp/B087L8DWZQ   Listen/Watch Impaulsive Podcast: Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGeBogGDZ9W3dsGx-mWQGJA   Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/impaulsive-with-logan-paul/id1442164847?at=1l3vwYf   Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/36PzTdM4rvRPaJYdBW1ZNa   Connect with Doug:   Instagram: www.instagram.com   Twitter: www.twitter.com/dougbopst   Facebook: www.facebook.com/dougbopst   More on Earth Echo Foods/Cacao Bliss:   www.earthechofoods.com/dougbopst   Use Promo code "Doug" at checkout to receive 15% off your order

A Nation That's Being Held Hostage By Addiction!!!   Today's episode is not only timely but truly one of the most impactful and informative conversations that I've ever had. The topic is one that is near and dear to my heart and the hearts of many.    Why you may ask?   Because we are talking about addiction and why and how our nation being held hostage by it.    Do you think I am kidding?    A recent CDC study stated that between May 2019 and May 2020 there were over 81,000 drug overdose deaths.  My fear is that these numbers will continue to climb in the next coming year. It is also estimated that 1500 kids per day will try taking prescription drugs for the first time to get high.   If you are the parent, relative, friend or spouse of somebody that could be struggling with addiction, you're probably asking yourself a lot of questions.    What do I do? How will I know? How do I find a good rehab? What if they don't listen to me? What about pot? Do I just kick them out? How do I get them to be honest with me?   Here is some good news. Today we are going to answer these questions. On the show today, I have Heather Hayes, one of the most highly respected and prominent authorities in the addiction field. She has over 30 years of experience as an interventionist and has completed over 3000 interventions.  95% of these have ended with the subject agreeing to go to treatment.    You may recognize her from A&E's hit show “Intervention” where she was a featured interventionist in 2018 and 2019 or from her appearances on Dr. Oz, CNN and other media. Did I forget to mention that she's also a trained hostage negotiator?   During our in depth discussion, Hayes provides step by step instructions on how to know if someone is suffering from addiction and how to ask the right questions. We cover how to support someone in recovery, how to deal with the trauma, shame and guilt of being a parent of an addicted child and how to have conversations about drugs.  We talk about boundaries, tough love and enabling.   She'll reveal what she is seeing on the front lines regarding what types of drugs are most popular as well as the staggering statistics the country is facing.   We also take a deep dive into cannabis and whether kids should be smoking it.  Does it help with anxiety and is it a successful form of harm reduction?   Finally, Hayes explains how to find the right treatment center and what she thinks is the solution to this massive problem we are facing.     Topics discussed:   Why addiction is very similar to a hostage situation and also potentially more complicated.    Heather's background and what sets her apart    How to know if someone is struggling with addiction and how to ask the right questions   How do you support someone in recovery?   How do you deal with the trauma, shame and guilt of being a parent of an addicted child and how to have conversations about drugs?   Boundaries, tough love and enabling   What she is seeing on the front lines   The staggering statistics that the country is facing   We take a deep dive into cannabis   Should kids be smoking cannabis?   Does it help with anxiety and is it a successful form of harm reduction?   How to find the right treatment center   What does Heather think the solution is?   Connect with Heather:    Website : https://www.heatherhayes.com/   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heatherrhayes/   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HeatherRHayesInc   Connect with Doug:   Instagram: www.instagram.com/dougbopst   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dougbopst   Website: www.dougbopst.com/   Private Facebook Group:   https://www.facebook.com/groups/690686891674188   Our sponsors:   Earth Echo Foods/Cacao Bliss:   www.earthechofoods.com/dougbopst   Use Promo code "Doug" at checkout to receive 15% off your order   Legion Athletics:   buylegion.com/doug and use code "Doug" at checkout for 20% off     Athletic Greens:    www.athleticgreens.com/doug to get your free year supply of Vitamin D and 5 free travel packs!   My Go To Electrolyte Drink     Drink LMNT replaces essential electrolytes with no sugar, no coloring, no artificial ingredients, or any other junk.
